Abstract:In this paper, we propose a piecewise smooth SI pest control system to model the process of spraying pesticides and releasing infectious pests. We assume that the pest population consists of susceptible pests and infectious pests, and that the disease spreads horizontally between pests. We take the susceptible pest as the control index on whether to implement chemical control and biological control strategies. Based on the theory of Filippov system, the sliding-mode domain and conditions for the existence of real equilibria, virtual equilibria, pseudo-equilibrium and boundary equilibria are given. Further, we show the global stability of real equilibria (or boundary equilibria) and pseudo-equilibrium. Our results can provide theoretical guidance for the problem of pest control.

Abstract:An SEI autonomous model with logistic growth rate and its corresponding nonautonomous model are investigated. For the autonomous case, we give the attractive regions of equilibria and perform some numerical simulations. Basic demographic reproduction numberRdis obtained. Moreover, only the basic reproduction numberR0cannot ensure the existence of the positive equilibrium, which needs additional conditionRd>R1. For the nonautonomous case, by introducing the basic reproduction number defined by the spectral radius, we study the uniform persistence and extinction of the disease. The results show that for the periodic system the basic reproduction number is more accurate than the average reproduction number.

Abstract:The dynamic behaviors of a predator-prey (pest) model with disease in prey and involving an impulsive control strategy to release infected prey at fixed times are investigated for the purpose of integrated pest management. Mathematical theoretical works have been pursuing the investigation of the local asymptotical stability and global attractivity for the semitrivial periodic solution and population persistent, which depicts the threshold expression of some critical parameters for carrying out integrated pest management. Numerical analysis indicates that the impulsive control strategy has a strong effect on the dynamical complexity and population persistent using bifurcation diagrams and power spectra diagrams. These results show that if the release amount of infective prey can satisfy some critical conditions, then all biological populations will coexist. All these results are expected to be of use in the study of the dynamic complexity of ecosystems.

Abstract:An SIS epidemic model in an m -patch environment with pulse vaccination and quarantine at two different fixed moments is formulated by impulsive differential equations in this paper. The sufficient conditions for the extinction and persistence of the disease are derived and the threshold value R0 is obtained by using the persistence theory of impulsive systems, the impulsive-type Floquet theory and the perturbation techniques. That is, the infection-free periodic solution is globally asymptotically stable if R01 . When m=2 , two special cases are considered to illustrate joint impact of the pulse vaccination and quarantine and population mobility on the disease dynamics. Numerical simulations are given to show the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:Two impulsive models of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are proposed, one with fixed intervention times and the other with these unfixed. The first model allows natural enemies to survive but under some conditions may lead to extinction of the pest. We use a simple prey-dependent consumption model with fixed impulsive effects and show that there exists a globally stable pesteradication periodic solution when the impulsive period is less than certain critical values. The effects of pest resistance to pesticides are also studied. The second model is constructed in the light of IPM practice such that when the pest population reaches the economic injury level (EIL), a combination of biological, cultural, and chemical tactics that reduce pests to tolerable levels is invoked. Using analytical methods, we show that there exists an orbitally asymptotically stable periodic solution with a maximum value no larger than the given Economic Threshold (ET). The complete expression for this periodic solution is given and the ET is evaluated for given parameters.We also show that in some cases control costs can be reduced by replacing IPM interventions at unfixed times with periodic interventions. Further, we show that small perturbations of the system do not affect the existence and stability of the periodic solution. Thus, we provide the first demonstration using mathematical models that an IPM strategy is more effective than classical control methods.

Abstract:In this paper, a SIS epidemic model with nonlinear incidence and ratio dependent pulse control is proposed and analyzed. Firstly, for the system that ignores the effect of pulses, the basic reproductive number is derived using the next-generation matrix method, and the stability of the equilibria of the system is analyzed. And then the dynamics of the system containing pulse effects was investigated. The existence of periodic solutions has been proven by constructing appropriate Poincaré mappings and using the fixed point theorem. We found that pulses have a significant impact on system dynamics. Under the influence of pulses, the system trajectory undergoes periodic oscillations, which are verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, we formulate and investigate the pest control models in accordance with the mathematical theory of epidemiology. We assume that the release of infected pests is continuous and impulsive, respectively. Therefore, our models are the ordinary differential equations and the impulsive differential equations. We study the global stability of the equilibria of the ordinary differential equations. The permanence of the impulsive differential equations is proved. By means of numerical simulation, we obtain the critical values of the control variable under different methods of release of infected pests. Thus, we provide a mathematical evidence in the management of an epidemic controlling a pest.

Abstract:In this paper, a stochastic SIS epidemic infectious diseases model with double stochastic perturbations is proposed. First, the existence and uniqueness of the positive global solution of the model are proved. Second, the controlling conditions for the extinction and persistence of the disease are obtained. Besides, the effects of the intensity of volatility [Formula: see text] and the speed of reversion [Formula: see text] on the dynamical behaviors of the model are discussed. Finally, some numerical examples are given to support the theoretical results. The results show that if the basic reproduction number [Formula: see text], the disease will be extinct, that is to say that we can control the threshold [Formula: see text] to suppress the disease outbreak.

Abstract:It is well known that many natural phenomena and human activities do exhibit impulsive effects in the fields of epidemiology. At the same time, compared with a single control strategy, it is obvious that the multiple control strategies are more beneficial to restrain the spread of infectious diseases. In this paper, we consider pulse vaccination and pulse elimination strategies at the same time and establish an SIRS epidemic model with standard incidence. Firstly, according to the stroboscopic mapping method of the discrete dynamical system, the disease-free T periodic solution of the model under the condition of pulse vaccination and pulse elimination is obtained. Secondly, the basic reproductive number R 0 is defined, and the local asymptotic stability of the disease-free T periodic solution is proved by Floquet theory for R 0 < 1 . Finally, based on the impulsive differential inequality theory, the global asymptotic stability of the disease-free T periodic solution is given for R 0 < 1 , and the disease dies out eventually. The results show that in order to stop the disease epidemic, it is necessary to choose the appropriate vaccination rate and elimination rate and the appropriate impulsive period.

Abstract:An autonomous SIRS epidemic model of two competitive species with interinfection of disease is formulated and analyzed. Some thresholds are identified and global asymptotic stability results of the bounded equilibria are proved. To the interior equilibrium, its local asymptotic stability is obtained. And under suitable conditions, it is proved that the model is uniformly persistent. Moreover, it is discovered that the interfinfection of disease is crucial to the dynamical behavior of the system, namely, when the two species coexist and the disease persists in both of them, and if the interinfection is removed, then three different cases may occur. 1.(1) The disease still persists in both species. 2.(2) The disease persists in one species, but dies out in the other species. 3.(3) The disease dies out in both species.

Abstract:In this article, an SIRS epidemic model spread by vectors (mosquitoes) which have an incubation time to become infectious is formulated. It is shown that a disease-free equilibrium point is globally stable if no endemic equilibrium point exists. Further, the endemic equilibrium point (if it exists) is globally stable with a respect “weak delay”. Some known results are generalized.

Abstract:Pulse vaccination is an effective strategy to restrain the spread of infectious diseases. This paper proposes a network-based SIR epidemic model incorporating a saturated force of infection and vertical transmission along with pulse vaccination strategy and continuous treatment plan. Dynamical behaviors of the model are analyzed in virtue of the theory for impulsive differential equations. We give the boundedness of solutions and derive the expression of basic reproduction number R0 . By the Floquet theorem and comparison principle, we show that the disease-free periodic solution is globally asymptotically stable when R0<1 . Moreover, a sufficient condition for the uniform permanence of the system is also obtained. Finally, numerical analyses are given to substantiate the theoretical results and a case for Rubella is studied.

Abstract:Saturating contact rate of individual contacts is very important in an epidemiology model. A class of SIR model with saturation incidence and age of infection is formulated in this paper. The dynamical behavior of the model is studied and the basic reproductive number R 0 is defined. It is proved that the diseased-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if R 0 < 1. The endemic equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable if K 1 > alpha and R 0 > 1.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct an SIRS epidemic model with birth pulse and pulse vaccination at the different fixed moment. The stability of the infection-free periodic solution is obtained by using the Poincaré map. The existence of nontrivial periodic solution bifurcated from the infection-free periodic solution is discussed by means of the bifurcation theory. It is shown that once a threshold is reached, a nontrivial periodic solution emerges via a supercritical bifurcation. Furthermore, some numerical simulations are given, which are in good accordance with the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an SIS (susceptible–infected–susceptible) epidemic model with mass action infection mechanism in a patchy environment. We first analyze the long‐time dynamics of the model in terms of the basic reproduction number R0 , and prove under certain conditions that the disease‐free equilibrium (DFE) is globally attractive if R0≤1 whereas the endemic equilibrium (EE) is globally attractive if R0>1 . Then we establish the existence and uniqueness of EE provided R0>1 , which is achieved, among other ingredients, by reducing the equilibrium problem into the one involving only the component of infected population. We further investigate the asymptotic profile of EE as the motility rate of the susceptible and/or infected population becomes small. We also perform the theoretical analysis on the corresponding model with linear birth/death effect. By comparing the findings of the models considered here with those of other closely related ones, our results suggest that the variation of total population, individual motility, infection mechanism, and spatial heterogeneity all can play significant roles in the dynamics of disease transmission, which may shed light on the practical implications for predicting the patterns of disease outbreak and designing optimal control strategies.

Abstract:Dynamical behavior of an infection-age-dependent SIS epidemic model with general form nonlinear saturated infectivity is studied and the threshold, a basic reproductive number which determines the outcome of the infectious disease is found. When the basic reproductive number is not greater than 1 meaning the disease will be extinct, there exists only a disease-free equilibrium, which is globally asymptotically stable except that the basic reproductive number equals 1. When the basic reproductive number is greater than 1 meaning the disease will persist, there are two equilibria, the disease-free equilibrium which is unstable and the endemic equilibrium which is locally asymptotically stable. The previous ODE model can be viewed as especial example and its relevant results can be regarded as corollaries of this article.

Abstract:Stochastic models are widely used to investigate the spread of epidemics in a complex environment. This paper extends a deterministic SAIRS epidemic model to a stochastic case with limited patient capacity and exposure. We first study the dynamical properties of the model under certain conditions, including persistence, extinction, and ergodic. Then, we introduce vaccination and isolation into the model as control variables. The optimal control strategies are obtained based on the Pontryagin minimum principle. Finally, numerical simulations are given to illustrate our theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an SI epidemic model with feedback controls in a patchy environment where individuals in each patch can disperse among n (n >= 2) patches. We derive the basic reproduction number R-0 and prove that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if R-0 <= 1. In the case of R-0 > 1, we derive sufficient conditions under which the endemic equilibrium is unique and globally asymptotically stable. Our proof of global stability utilizes the method of global Lyapunov functions and results from graph theory. Numerical simulations are carried out to support our theoretical results. Abstract:The occurrence of pests and diseases during agricultural production affects the quality and quantity of agricultural products. It is important to evaluate the impact of various factors on pests to achieve optimal results of integrated pest management (IPM) during its implementation. In this paper, we considered the transient and non-transient effects of chemical control on pests and the effects on natural enemies at different times, and developed a corresponding pest control model. Detailed studies and comparisons were conducted for spraying pesticides either more or less frequently as compared to strategies for releasing natural enemies. The threshold conditions for global asymptotic stabilization of the pest extinction period solution was obtained. Using two-parameter and sensitivity analysis techniques, the parameters affecting the variation of the threshold were discussed. By comparing these two pest control strategies, we found the existence of optimal application and release frequencies. Finally, in order to control pests below the economic threshold level, the state-dependent pest model was numerically investigated. The results show that the presence or absence of chemical control of pests can depend on the values taken for the parameters in the model. Based on this information, pest control experts can make decisions about the best spraying time and the best release rate.
