Abstract:An SEI autonomous model with logistic growth rate and its corresponding nonautonomous model are investigated. For the autonomous case, we give the attractive regions of equilibria and perform some numerical simulations. Basic demographic reproduction numberRdis obtained. Moreover, only the basic reproduction numberR0cannot ensure the existence of the positive equilibrium, which needs additional conditionRd>R1. For the nonautonomous case, by introducing the basic reproduction number defined by the spectral radius, we study the uniform persistence and extinction of the disease. The results show that for the periodic system the basic reproduction number is more accurate than the average reproduction number.

Abstract:An autonomous SIRS epidemic model of two competitive species with interinfection of disease is formulated and analyzed. Some thresholds are identified and global asymptotic stability results of the bounded equilibria are proved. To the interior equilibrium, its local asymptotic stability is obtained. And under suitable conditions, it is proved that the model is uniformly persistent. Moreover, it is discovered that the interfinfection of disease is crucial to the dynamical behavior of the system, namely, when the two species coexist and the disease persists in both of them, and if the interinfection is removed, then three different cases may occur. 1.(1) The disease still persists in both species. 2.(2) The disease persists in one species, but dies out in the other species. 3.(3) The disease dies out in both species.

Abstract:This article is concerned with a nonlocal dispersal susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) epidemic model with Neumann boundary condition, where the rates of disease transmission and recovery are assumed to be spatially heterogeneous and the total population number is constant. We first introduce the basic reproduction number $R_0$ and then discuss the existence, uniqueness and stability of steady states of the nonlocal dispersal SIS epidemic model in terms of $R_0$. In particular, we also consider the impacts of the large diffusion rates of the susceptible and infected population on the persistence and extinction of the disease, and these results imply that the nonlocal movement of the susceptible or infected individuals will enhance the persistence of the disease. Additionally, our analytical results also suggest that the spatial heterogeneity tends to boost the spread of the disease. We have to emphasize that the main difficulty is that a lack of regularizing effect occurs.

Abstract:This paper studies the dynamical behaviors of a diffusion epidemic SIRI system with distinct dispersal rates. The overall solution of the system is derived by using L-p theory and the Young's inequality. The uniformly boundedness of the solution is obtained for the system. The asymptotic smoothness of the semi-flow and the existence of the global attractor are discussed. Moreover, the basic reproduction number is defined in a spatially uniform environment and the threshold dynamical behaviors are obtained for extinction or continuous persistence of disease. When the spread rate of the susceptible individuals or the infected individuals is close to zero, the asymptotic profiles of the system are studied. This can help us to better understand the dynamic characteristics of the model in a bounded space domain with zero flux boundary conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, a modified SIS model with an infective vector on complex networks is proposed and analyzed, which incorporates some infectious diseases that are not only transmitted by a vector, but also spread by direct contacts between human beings. We treat direct human contacts as a social network and assume spatially homogeneous mixing between vector and human populations. By mathematical analysis, we obtain the basic reproduction number R0 and study the effects of various immunization schemes. For the network model, we prove that if R0<1, the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, otherwise there exists an unique endemic equilibrium such that it is globally attractive. Our theoretical results are confirmed by numerical simulations and suggest a promising way for the control of infectious diseases.

Abstract:Seasonal forcing and contact patterns are two key features of many disease dynamics that generate periodic patterns. Both features have not been ascertained deeply in the previous works. In this work, we develop and analyze a non-autonomous degree-based mean field network model within a Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) framework. We assume that the disease transmission rate being periodic to study synergistic impacts of the periodic transmission and the heterogeneity of the contact network on the infection threshold and dynamics for seasonal diseases. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that (1) the disease free equilibrium point is globally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number is less than one; and (2) there exists a unique global periodic solution that both susceptible and infected individuals coexist if the basic reproduction number is larger than one. We apply our framework to Scale-free contact networks for the simulation. Our results show that heterogeneity in the contact networks plays an important role in accelerating disease spreading and increasing the amplitude of the periodic steady state solution. These results confirm the need to address factors that create periodic patterns and contact patterns in seasonal disease when making policies to control an outbreak.

Abstract:In the present paper, we are concerned with an SIS epidemic reaction-diffusion model governed by mass action infection mechanism and linear birth-death growth with no flux boundary condition. By performing qualitative analysis, we study the stability of the disease-free equilibrium, uniform persistence property in terms of the basic reproduction number and the global stability of the endemic equilibrium in homogeneous environment, and investigate the asymptotic profile of endemic equilibria (when exist) in heterogeneous environment as one of the movement rate of the susceptible and infected populations is small. Our results, together with those in previous works on three other closely related modeling systems, suggest that the factors such as infection mechanism, variation of total population and population movement play vital but subtle roles in the transmission dynamics of diseases and hence provide useful insights into the strategies designed for disease control and prevention.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an SIR epidemic model with nonlocal diffusion and double free boundaries, which can be used to describe a class of biological phenomena: the depletion of native resources by all individuals, the infected individuals do not lose their fertility completely, the recovered individuals are immune and no longer infected, the infected and recovered individuals spread along the same free boundary. We first investigate the existence and uniqueness of global solution, long time behaviors and some sufficient conditions for spreading and vanishing. Then we estimate the spreading speed and derive that accelerated spreading could happen when the kernel function does not satisfy a threshold condition.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an SIS (susceptible–infected–susceptible) epidemic model with mass action infection mechanism in a patchy environment. We first analyze the long‐time dynamics of the model in terms of the basic reproduction number R0 , and prove under certain conditions that the disease‐free equilibrium (DFE) is globally attractive if R0≤1 whereas the endemic equilibrium (EE) is globally attractive if R0>1 . Then we establish the existence and uniqueness of EE provided R0>1 , which is achieved, among other ingredients, by reducing the equilibrium problem into the one involving only the component of infected population. We further investigate the asymptotic profile of EE as the motility rate of the susceptible and/or infected population becomes small. We also perform the theoretical analysis on the corresponding model with linear birth/death effect. By comparing the findings of the models considered here with those of other closely related ones, our results suggest that the variation of total population, individual motility, infection mechanism, and spatial heterogeneity all can play significant roles in the dynamics of disease transmission, which may shed light on the practical implications for predicting the patterns of disease outbreak and designing optimal control strategies.

Abstract:Dynamical behavior of an infection-age-dependent SIS epidemic model with general form nonlinear saturated infectivity is studied and the threshold, a basic reproductive number which determines the outcome of the infectious disease is found. When the basic reproductive number is not greater than 1 meaning the disease will be extinct, there exists only a disease-free equilibrium, which is globally asymptotically stable except that the basic reproductive number equals 1. When the basic reproductive number is greater than 1 meaning the disease will persist, there are two equilibria, the disease-free equilibrium which is unstable and the endemic equilibrium which is locally asymptotically stable. The previous ODE model can be viewed as especial example and its relevant results can be regarded as corollaries of this article.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a susceptible-infective-susceptible (SIS) reaction-diffusion epidemic model with spontaneous infection and logistic source in a periodically evolving domain. Using the iterative technique, the uniform boundedness of solution is established. In addition, the spatial-temporal risk index ℛ0(ρ)$${{\cal R}_0}(\rho)$$ depending on the domain evolution rate ρ(t) as well as its analytical properties are discussed. The monotonicity of ℛ0(ρ)$${{\cal R}_0}(\rho)$$ with respect to the diffusion coefficients of the infected dI, the spontaneous infection rate η(ρ(t)y) and interval length L is investigated under appropriate conditions. Further, the existence and asymptotic behavior of periodic endemic equilibria are explored by upper and lower solution method. Finally, some numerical simulations are presented to illustrate our analytical results. Our results provide valuable information for disease control and prevention.

Abstract:In this paper, a stochastic SIS epidemic infectious diseases model with double stochastic perturbations is proposed. First, the existence and uniqueness of the positive global solution of the model are proved. Second, the controlling conditions for the extinction and persistence of the disease are obtained. Besides, the effects of the intensity of volatility [Formula: see text] and the speed of reversion [Formula: see text] on the dynamical behaviors of the model are discussed. Finally, some numerical examples are given to support the theoretical results. The results show that if the basic reproduction number [Formula: see text], the disease will be extinct, that is to say that we can control the threshold [Formula: see text] to suppress the disease outbreak.

Abstract:We have formulated a simple epidemiological model with two diseases that can coinfect a single host. The first disease is assumed to be chronic, the second one acute. For infectives infected only by the first disease, we introduce the age of infection, For these two diseases, we obtain their reproduction numbers, respectively, and establish conditions for the existence and stability of the disease-free equilibrium, the boundary equilibrium, and the positive (coexistent) equilibrium. For infectious individuals infected only by the first disease, when some transfer rates depend on the age of infection and the corresponding model is governed by partial differential equations (PDEs), we give a sufficient condition for the existence of positive equilibrium, and its stability is determined by a transcendental equation; when all the associated rates are independent of the age of infection, the corresponding models are ordinary differential equations (ODEs). We obtain complete results on dynamics, find that the coexistent equilibrium of two diseases is globally stable if they exist, and find that the boundary equilibrium is globally stable if it is locally stable. Finally, we find that there is a difference between PDE and ODE models.

Abstract:. This paper is concerned with a class of diffusive SIRS epidemic model with general saturation effect incidence and transfer from infectious to susceptible and logistic source in a heterogeneous environment. First, the uniform bounds of solutions are obtained by using Moser-Alikakos iteration method. Next, the basic reproduction number R0 is defined via the variational characterization of elliptic eigenvalues, which depends on the dispersal rates of both the susceptible and infectious groups. Furthermore, the effects of dispersal and saturation on asymptotic profiles of the endemic steady states are explored. In particular, large saturation of either the susceptible or infectious groups may contribute to the eradication of the infectious disease. Next, some bifurcation analysis is conducted by taking transient/acquired immunity coefficient as bifurcation parameter. Finally, the impact of spatial heterogeneity, large/small diffusion rates on the disease transmission as well as bifurcation dynamics are explored via some numerical simulations for model system on one-dimensional domain.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) epidemic model with demographics on heterogeneous metapopulation networks. We analytically derive the basic reproduction number, which determines not only the existence of endemic equilibrium but also the global dynamics of the model. The model always has the disease-free equilibrium, which is globally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number is less than unity and otherwise unstable. We also provide sufficient conditions on the global stability of the unique endemic equilibrium. Numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the theoretical results and the effects of the connectivity and diffusion. Furthermore, we find that diffusion rates play an active role in controlling the spread of infectious diseases.

Abstract:Migration can be divided into temporary and permanent migration, which is related to the residence time of people in the patch, thus we consider an SIS epidemic model with migration and residence time in a patchy environment. If [Formula: see text], the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable and the disease dies out. With the same migration rate of susceptible and infectious individuals and without disease-induced death, when [Formula: see text], the endemic equilibrium is unique and globally asymptotically stable. Numerical simulations are carried out to show the effects of residence time and the migration rate on disease prevalence.

Abstract:A disease transmission model of SIS type with stage structure and a delay is formulated. Stability of the disease free equilibrium, and existence, uniqueness, and stability of an endemic equilibrium, are investigated for the model. The stability results are stated in terms of a key threshold parameter. The effects of stage structure and time delay on dynamical behavior of the infectious disease are analyzed. It is shown that stage structure has no effect on the epidemic model and Hopf bifurcation can occur as the time delay increases.

Abstract:Different epidemic models with one or two characteristics of multi-group, age structure and spatial diffusion have been proposed, but few models take all three into consideration. In this paper, a novel multi-group SEIR epidemic model with both age structure and spatial diffusion is constructed for the first time ever to study the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. We first analytically study the positivity, boundedness, existence and uniqueness of solution and the existence of compact global attractor of the associated solution semiflow. Based on some assumptions for parameters, we then show that the disease-free steady state is globally asymptotically stable by utilizing appropriate Lyapunov functionals and the LaSalle's invariance principle. By means of Perron-Frobenius theorem and graph-theoretical results, the existence and global stability of endemic steady state are ensured under appropriate conditions. Finally, feasibility of main theoretical results is showed with the aid of numerical examples for model with two groups which is important from the viewpoint of applications.
