Abstract:Abstract An expectation for optimal integrated pest management is that the instantaneous numbers of natural enemies released should depend on the densities of both pest and natural enemy in the field. For this, a generalised predator–prey model with nonlinear impulsive control tactics is proposed and its dynamics is investigated. The threshold conditions for the global stability of the pest-free periodic solution are obtained based on the Floquet theorem and analytic methods. Also, the sufficient conditions for permanence are given. Additionally, the problem of finding a nontrivial periodic solution is confirmed by showing the existence of a nontrivial fixed point of the model’s stroboscopic map determined by a time snapshot equal to the common impulsive period. In order to address the effects of nonlinear pulse control on the dynamics and success of pest control, a predator–prey model incorporating the Holling type II functional response function as an example is investigated. Finally, numerical simulations show that the proposed model has very complex dynamical behaviour, including period-doubling bifurcation, chaotic solutions, chaos crisis, period-halving bifurcations and periodic windows. Moreover, there exists an interesting phenomenon whereby period-doubling bifurcation and period-halving bifurcation always coexist when nonlinear impulsive controls are adopted, which makes the dynamical behaviour of the model more complicated, resulting in difficulties when designing successful pest control strategies.

Abstract:When confronted with the imminent threat of predation, the prey instinctively employ strategies to avoid being consumed. These anti-predator tactics involve individuals acting collectively to intimidate predators and reduce potential harm during an attack. In the present work, we propose a state-dependent feedback control predator-prey model that incorporates a nonmonotonic functional response, taking into account the anti-predator behavior observed in pest-natural enemy ecosystems within the agricultural context. The qualitative analysis of this model is presented utilizing the principles of impulsive semi-dynamical systems. Firstly, the stability conditions of the equilibria are derived by employing pertinent properties of planar systems. The precise domain of the impulsive set and phase set is determined by considering the phase portrait of the system. Secondly, a Poincaré map is constructed by utilizing the sequence of impulsive points within the phase set. The stability of the order-1 periodic solution at the boundary is subsequently analyzed by an analog of the Poincaré criterion. Additionally, this article presents various threshold conditions that determine both the existence and stability of an order-1 periodic solution. Furthermore, it investigates the existence of order-k (k≥2) periodic solutions. Finally, the article explores the complex dynamics of the model, encompassing multiple bifurcation phenomena and chaos, through computational simulations.

Abstract:The dynamic behaviors of a predator-prey (pest) model with disease in prey and involving an impulsive control strategy to release infected prey at fixed times are investigated for the purpose of integrated pest management. Mathematical theoretical works have been pursuing the investigation of the local asymptotical stability and global attractivity for the semitrivial periodic solution and population persistent, which depicts the threshold expression of some critical parameters for carrying out integrated pest management. Numerical analysis indicates that the impulsive control strategy has a strong effect on the dynamical complexity and population persistent using bifurcation diagrams and power spectra diagrams. These results show that if the release amount of infective prey can satisfy some critical conditions, then all biological populations will coexist. All these results are expected to be of use in the study of the dynamic complexity of ecosystems.

Abstract:Integrated pest management is a pest control strategy that combines biological and chemical methods to reduce environmental pollution and protect biodiversity. Recent research indicated that the fear caused by predators had a significant effect on the growth, development, and reproductive processes of prey. Therefore, we have proposed a pest-natrual enemy system, which is a nonlinear state-dependent feedback control model that incorporated the fear effect in the predator-prey relationship. We discussed impulsive sets and phase sets of the model and derived an expression for the Poincaré map. Furthermore, we analyzed the existence and stability of order-$ 1 $ periodic solutions and explored the existence of order-$ k $ $ (k\ge2) $ periodic solutions. Finally, numerical simulations were conducted to validate our theoretical results and reveal their biological implications.

Abstract:A good pulse control strategy should depend on the numbers of pests and natural enemies as determined via an integrated pest control strategy. Taking this into consideration, here, a nonlinear impulsive predator-prey model with improved Leslie-Gower and Beddington-DeAngelis functional response terms is qualitatively analyzed. The existence of a periodic solution for pest eradication has been obtained and the critical condition of global asymptotic stability has been established by using the impulsive differential equation Floquet theory. Furthermore, the conditions for the lasting survival of the system has been proved by applying a comparison theorem for differential equations. Additionally, a stable positive periodic solution has been obtained by applying bifurcation theory. To understand how nonlinear pulses affect the dynamic behavior of a system, MATLAB was used to conduct numerical simulations to show that the model has very complex dynamical behavior.

Furthermore, the influences of impulsive perturbations on the inherent oscillation are studied numerically, an oscillation which exhibits rich dynamics including period-halving bifurcation, chaotic narrow or wide windows, and chaotic crises. Abstract:Normally, chemical pesticides kill not only pests but also their natural enemies. In order to better control the pests, two-time delayed stage-structured predator-prey models with birth pulse and pest control tactics are proposed and analyzed by using impulsive differential equations in present work. The stability threshold conditions for the mature prey-eradication periodic solutions of two models are derived, respectively. The effects of key parameters including killing efficiency rate, pulse period, the maximum birth effort per unit of time of natural enemy, and maturation time of prey on the threshold values are discussed in more detail. By comparing the two threshold values of mature prey-extinction, we provide the fact that the second control tactic is more effective than the first control method.

Abstract:Research on agricultural pest control data indicates that the actual effectiveness of insecticides may exhibit slight variations, influenced by factors such as the type and quantity of pests. Additionally, the development of resistance by pests, as a result of adaptation to the environment, can impact the precision of pest control strategies. Hence we suggest implementing a nonlinear pulse state-dependent feedback control system, considering resource limitations, to investigate the influence of varying pesticide fatality rates on pest outbreaks. This paper takes into account the fear effect and anti-predator behavior to accurately portray the farmland ecosystem. We assessed the phase set and Poincaré map under the conditions for the existence of order- k (where ) periodic solutions and examined their stability behavior. Remarkably, the system exhibited diverse bifurcation phenomena associated with pesticide-related parameters. Furthermore, the system demonstrated a multistability phenomenon involving the coexistence of the order-1 periodic solution and the limit cycle. This suggests that altering control strategies can disturb the initial coexistence status of pests and natural enemies. It also underscores that resource limitations can indeed impact the outbreak patterns and frequencies of pests. In addition to the variability in pesticide fatality rates, the inclusion of natural enemy releases in the nonlinear pulse strategy contributes to the model exhibiting complex dynamic characteristics. All these findings are substantiated by numerical simulations.

Abstract:A nonsmooth ecological model was proposed and analyzed, focusing on IPM, state-dependent feedback control strategies, and anti-predator behavior. The main objective was to investigate the impact of anti-predator behavior on successful pest control, pest outbreaks, and the dynamical properties of the proposed model. First, the qualitative behaviors of the corresponding ODE model were presented, along with an accurate definition of the Poincaré map in the absence of internal equilibrium. Second, we investigated the existence and stability of order-k (where k = 1, 2, 3) periodic solutions through the monotonicity and continuity properties of the Poincaré map. Third, we conducted numerical simulations to investigate the complexity of the dynamical behaviors. Finally, we provided a precise definition of the Poincaré map in situations where an internal equilibrium existed within the model. The results indicated that when the mortality rate of the insecticide was low or high, the boundary order-1 periodic solution of the model was stable. However, when the mortality rate of the insecticide was maintained at a moderate level, the boundary order-1 periodic solution of the model became unstable; in this case, pests and natural enemies could coexist.

Abstract:The application of pest management involves two thresholds when the chemical control and biological control are adopted, respectively. Our purpose is to provide an appropriate balance between the chemical control and biological control. Therefore, a Smith predator-prey system for integrated pest management is established in this paper. In this model, the intensity of implementation of biological control and chemical control depends linearly on the selected control level (threshold). Firstly, the existence and uniqueness of the order-one periodic solution (i.e., OOPS) are proved by means of the subsequent function method to confirm the feasibility of the biological and chemical control strategy of pest management. Secondly, the stability of system is proved by the limit method of the successor points’ sequences and the analogue of the Poincaré criterion. Moreover, an optimization strategy is formulated to reduce the total cost and obtain the best level of pest control. Finally, the numerical simulation of a specific model is performed.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a class of predator–prey models with nonlinear state-dependent feedback control in the saturated state. The nonlinear state impulse control leads to a diversity of pulse and phase sets such that the Poincaré map built on the corresponding phase sets behaves like the single-peak function and multi-peak function with multiple discontinuities. We start our study by analyzing the exact pulse and phase sets of models under various cases generated by the dependent parameter space of nonlinear state feedback control, then construct the Poincaré map that is followed by investigating their monotonicity, continuity, concavity, and immobility properties. We also explore the existence, uniqueness, and sufficient conditions for the global stability of the order-1 periodic solutions of the systems. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate and reveal the biological significance of our theoretical findings.

Abstract:An actual ecological predator-prey system often undergoes random environmental mutations owing to the impact of natural disasters and man-made destruction, which may destroy the balance between the species. In this paper, the stochastic dynamics of the nonlinear predator-prey system considering random environmental mutations is investigated, and a feedback control strategy is proposed to reshape the response of the predator-prey system against random abrupt environmental mutations. A delayed Markov jump system (MJS) is established to model such a predator-prey system. A novel first integral is constructed which leads to better approximation solutions of the ecosystem. Then, by applying the stochastic averaging method based on this novel first integral, the stochastic response of the predator-prey system is investigated, and an analytical feedback control is designed to reshape the response of the ecosystem from the disturbed state back to the undisturbed one. Numerical simulations finally illustrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed procedure.

Abstract:By using pollution model and impulsive delay differential equation, we formulate a pest control model with stage structure for natural enemy in a polluted environment by introducing a constant periodic pollutant input and killing pest at different fixed moments and investigate the dynamics of such a system. We assume only that the natural enemies are affected by pollution, and we choose the method to kill the pest without harming natural enemies. Sufficient conditions for global attractivity of the natural enemy-extinction periodic solution and permanence of the system are obtained. Numerical simulations are presented to confirm our theoretical results.

Abstract:In view of the logical consistence, the model of a two-prey one-predator system with Beddington-DeAngelis functional response and impulsive control strategies is formulated and studied systematically. By using the Floquet theory of impulsive equation, small amplitude perturbation method, and comparison technique, we obtain the conditions which guarantee the global asymptotic stability of the two-prey eradication periodic solution. We also proved that the system is permanent under some conditions. Numerical simulations find that the system appears the phenomenon of competition exclusion.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel pest-natural enemy model with additional food source and Holling-($ p $+1) type functional response is put forward for plant pest management by considering multiple food sources for predators. The dynamical properties of the model are investigated, including existence and local asymptotic stability of equilibria, as well as the existence of limit cycles. The inhibition of natural enemy on pest dispersal and the impact of additional food sources on system dynamics are elucidated. In view of the fact that the inhibitory effect of the natural enemy on pest dispersal is slow and in general deviated from the expected target, an integrated pest management model is established by regularly releasing natural enemies and spraying insecticide to improve the control effect. The influence of the control period on the global stability and system persistence of the pest extinction periodic solution is discussed. It is shown that there exists a time threshold, and as long as the control period does not exceed that threshold, pests can be completely eliminated. When the control period exceeds that threshold, the system can bifurcate the supercritical coexistence periodic solution from the pest extinction one. To illustrate the main results and verify the effectiveness of the control method, numerical simulations are implemented in MATLAB programs. This study not only enriched the related content of population dynamics, but also provided certain reference for the management of plant pest.

Abstract:By assuming a periodic variation in the intrinsic growth rate of the prey, a nonlinear ecological system with periodic forcing and state-dependent feedback control is proposed. The main purpose of the present paper is to study the dynamical behavior generated by periodic forcing and nonlinear impulse perturbations and their effects on pest control. To do this, we first investigate the existence and stability of the boundary periodic solution, and then we employ the numerical bifurcation techniques, mainly including one-dimensional and two-dimensional parameter bifurcation analyses, to reveal that the system exhibits rich and complex dynamic behaviors. Especially, period-adding bifurcation with chaos is found in the two-parameter bifurcation plane. Moreover, we find the periodic structure similar to Arnold tongues, and they are arranged according to the sequence of a Farey tree. In addition, one-dimensional bifurcation diagrams reveal the existence of order-[Formula: see text] periodic, and chaotic solutions, multiple coexisting attractors, period-doubling bifurcations, period-halving bifurcations, and so on. Finally, the effects of the initial population density of pests and natural enemies on the pulse frequency and the biological significance related to the numerical results are studied and discussed.
Dynamics of a Double-Impulsive Control Model of Integrated Pest Management Using Perturbation Methods and Floquet Theory

Abstract:We formulate an integrated pest management model to control natural pests of the crop through the periodic application of biopesticide and chemical pesticides. In a theoretical analysis of the system pest eradication, a periodic solution is found and established. All the system variables are proved to be bounded. Our main goal is then to ensure that pesticides are optimized, in terms of pesticide concentration and pesticide application frequency, and that the optimum combination of pesticides is found to provide the most benefit to the crop. By using Floquet theory and the small amplitude perturbation method, we prove that the pest eradication periodic solution is locally and globally stable. The acquired results establish a threshold time limit for the impulsive release of various controls as well as some valid theoretical conclusions for effective pest management. Furthermore, after a numerical comparison, we conclude that integrated pest management is more effective than single biological or chemical controls. Finally, we illustrate the analytical results through numerical simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, an impulsive model is discussed for an integrated pest management approach comprising of chemical and mechanical controls. The pesticides and harvesting are used to control the stage-structured pest population. The mature pest give birth to immature pest in pulses at regular intervals. The pest is controlled by spraying chemical pesticides affecting immature as well as mature pest. The harvesting of both immature and mature pest further reduce the pest population. The discrete dynamical system obtained from stroboscopic map is analyzed. The threshold conditions for stability of pest-free state as well as non-trivial period-1 solution is obtained. The effect of pesticide spray timing and harvesting on immature as well as mature pest are shown. Finally, by numerical simulation with MATLAB, the dynamical behaviors of the model is found to be complex. Above the threshold level there is a characteristic sequence of bifurcations leading to chaotic dynamics. Route to chaos is found to be period-doubling. Period halving bifurcations are also observed.
