Abstract:Based on 40CrNiMoA steel laser harden technique,an ideal evenly distributed harden layer is obtained along the gear through the laser heat-processing technique.The X-ray analysis is carried for comparing the property between the laser hardened gear(40CrNiMoA) and carburized gear(20Cr2Ni4A).The experiments show that the microcrystal size in laser-hardened gear is obviously smaller than that in carburized gear,while the residual austenite is higher and dislocation density is far higher in the former.It verifies that the fatigue strength of former is better.

Abstract:To explore laser quenching process of 20CrMnMo gear, finite element analysis of the quenching process and laser quenching experiment were performed. First, a finite element model of laser quenching process was built, with surface effect unit was added to the 3D model of gear. Then, the load was applied by two kinds of ways including manual mode and APDL language. At last, the continuous movement of laser speckle and the distribution of temperature field along both the axial direction of tooth surface and the depth direction were simulated, and the temperature curves changed by time about nodes along the central surface and depth direction were acquired, which has important guiding significance to the parameter settings of laser quenching process. On the other hand, 20CrMnMo gears were processed by laser quenching after carburization, the tooth surfaces with different hardness values were got, which are studied using the experiments with combination of three parameters including laser power, scanning speed, and light spot diameter. Typical teeth surface were make samples and studied by SEM, and the hardening layer was measured by metallographic microscope. A good agreement in the simulation and experiment results was found. Research result shows that the optimum parameters of laser quenching about 20CrMnMo gears are the following: laser power P = 2300 W, the scanning speed v = 750 mm/min, spot diameter d = 14 mm; the maximum hardness of tooth surface is 61.4 HRC, the microstructures are compact needle and plate strip martensite, the grain size is about 9°; equivalent hardened layer depth is 1.8 mm or so.

Abstract:This article summarized the research progress on the theories of laser quenching,and meanwhile analyzed the formation mechanism of hardening layer,as well as its difference from the formation mechanism of the traditional gear quenching methods. Through the analysis of scanning way,offset,scanning speed,angle of incidence and auxiliary cooling technology in the process of laser quenching,corresponding optimization schemes were put forward. By comparing the hardness of tooth surface,wear resistance,deformation,the microstructure and grain shape and distribution of the gears treated by laser quenching and normal quenching,it was concluded that the gear product of laser quenching had better mechanical performance than those prepared by the conventional quenching.

Abstract:Laser quenching is one of the most outstanding gear tooth surface quenching methods due to its high efficiency, environmental friendliness, and performance consistency. Since gear tooth surface laser quenching requires repeated scanning, changing the laser scanning velocity and power by program control can meet the needs of variable depth quenching. The effects of laser scanning velocity and output power on the quenching depth and surface Rockwell hardness after quenching were studied and experimentally analyzed. The result shows that by adjusting the parameters, the surface hardness of the specimen changes slightly with the actual received laser energy. However, the quenching depth can be consistent with the laser scanning velocity. The maximum surface Rockwell hardness that a laser quenched material can achieve depends on the material itself, not on the laser power or scanning velocity. Compared with accelerated laser quenching, decelerated laser quenching is more suitable for tooth surface machining due to the cumulative effect of energy within the quenching depth range of metal materials.

Abstract:Abstract40Cr is essential to steel for the manufacture of hardened gears, and optimizing its laser quenching process will be of great significance for gear wear and life extension. However, the complete reliance on the experimental trial-and-error approach does not effectively reveal the mechanism of the evolution of the laser quenching process in disk laser. Numerical simulation provides an effective way to obtain the transient evolution of the laser quenching process. In this paper, the temperature changes physical parameters of the quenched material are calculated based on the CALPHAD method. Establish a thermo-elastic–plastic multi-field coupling model for the laser hardening process of the disk laser 40Cr gear steel. Perform the numerical calculations on the transient temperature, martensite phase fraction, and the transformation-induced plasticity stress evolution of the 40Cr laser hardening process. Focus on the mechanism of the mutual coupling between phase change behavior and plastic strain. Calculations show that there is heat accumulation during quenching, with a peak temperature of 1448 K. Plastic stress has a “hump” distribution, with a peak value of 834 MPa, which is 1.25 mm from the center of the focal point. The experimental analyses of the 40Cr gear steel quenching microstructure and hardness distribution state by the Axioskop2 scanning electron microscope, the KEYENCE VH-Z100R super depth of field 3D microscope, and the Q10M microhardness tester reveal the mechanical behavior of the material and the phase hardening law during the quenching process. That provided an essential theoretical basis for effective prediction on quenching residual stress and optimizing industrial production parameters.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications, Ahead of Print. 40Cr is a significant material in the manufacturing of gears. However, this process is plagued by uneven distribution of quenching layers and excessive residual stress, leading to a decline in the precision of the workpiece, deformation, and cracking. Relying solely on the trial-and-error method in experiments is inadequate for effectively revealing the evolution mechanism of the laser quenching process. This approach is detrimental to improving research and development efficiency. In this study, a multi-field coupled numerical model for the multi-track overlapping laser quenching of the 40Cr gear steel is established. This model quantitatively reveals the coupling evolution laws of the temperature field, stress field, and phase transformation field during the laser quenching. The focus is on calculating the size of the tempering zone under different overlapping rates and conducting correlation analysis between parameters. Based on the artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms, the width and depth of the tempering zone are selected as target values for parameter optimization. The aim is to find the nonlinear relationship between the laser power, spot diameter, scanning speed, laser overlapping rate, and the size of the tempering zone, which can accurately predict the size of the tempering zone. The material microstructure of 40Cr gear steel was characterized by the scanning electron microscope, microhardness tester and friction and wear tester. The results show that the training error and testing error of the output parameters in genetic algorithm optimized back propagation network can accurately predict the size of the tempering zone. It is found that the higher the lap rate, the more uniform the hardness of the phase transformation hardening layer surface, and the tempering softening zone becomes larger. The parts surface is easy to produce defects, which can provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the laser quenching process parameters.

Said ivnention not only possesses high quenching hardness, but also the hardened layer formed on the surface of gear is a alloyed layer whose grains are refined, deformation isless and it has no environmental pollution.

Abstract:Deformation of the gear shaft in transmission is inevitable after case hardened heat treatment. Straightening is the normal way to ensure the straightness requirement. During the straightening process, cracks often appear and result in scrapped parts. Based on the situation of high rejection rate of straightening crack of the internal input shaft of a dual-clutch automobile transmission, this paper makes an in-depth analyses of the pressure straightening process theory, the crack generation mechanism, the working process of the automatic straightening machine and the crack detection system, etc., and establishes the relationship between the ram increment, the total displacement and the crack rate during multi-step progressive straightening, proposes a way to quickly judge the straightening performance of the parts. Finally, after optimizing the pressure position by finite element analysis, optimizing the straightening procedure by adjusting ram increment and adopting vector straightening method, optimizing the parts martial properties by heat treatment improvement, the straightening crack rate of internal input shaft was reduced from 1.95 % to 0.14 %.

Abstract:Laser carburizing is an effective method to improve the surface properties of materials. In order to improve the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of 20CrMnTi ring gear surface, firstly, the material surface was carburized by laser. Secondly, the hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the surface before and after carburization were tested. Finally, the electronic structure of 20CrMnTi before and after carburization was calculated based on the first principle method of density functional theory. The results show that the surface microstructure after laser carburizing is mainly high carbon martensite and cementite, and the hardness is increased by 109.5%. There are adhesive wear and abrasive wear before and after carburizing. Interstitial carbon increases the density of dislocation and lattice distortion, and significantly improves the wear resistance of the surface. At the same time, the addition of interstitial carbon reduces the corrosion current density, increases the self-corrosion potential, and improves the corrosion resistance of the material. The first principle calculation results show that the interstitial carbon increases the strength of covalent bond and ionic bond, which is the main reason for the improvement of hardness and wear resistance, and the interstitial carbon reduces the density of states at Fermi level and inhibits electron transfer, which is the essential reason for improving corrosion resistance.

Abstract:In this study, the use of laser quenching was explored as a method of surface strengthening for 40Cr steel utilized in machine tool guideways. The impact of various process parameters, including laser power, scanning speed, and spot radius, on the hardness and depth of the quenched layer was evaluated. The results indicated that the optimal process parameters were a laser power of 2000 W, a scanning speed of 20 mm/s, and a spot radius of 3 mm, which resulted in a maximum quenched layer hardness of 889 HV, an average quenched layer hardness of 764 HV, and a quenched layer depth of 0.7 mm. The application of the laser quenching process through multiple passes was shown to further improve the material properties, resulting in a hardness increase from 749 HV in a single quench to 980 HV in 16 quenches and a corresponding increase in the quenched layer depth from 0.2 mm to 0.9 mm. The hardness of the surface treated by the lap quenching process increased from 250 HV after a single quench to 390 HV after repeated quenching, leading to a more uniform distribution of hardness on the material surface. Furthermore, the average coefficient of friction decreased from 0.67 to 0.37, and the weight loss due to wearing was reduced from 9.7 mg to 1.7 mg after the staggered repeated quenching process.

Abstract:The laser surface quenching power, scanning speed, and spot area have significant effect on the properties of the laser quenched materials. The effects of laser quenching power and scanning speed on the tribological, vibration, and noise performance of gray cast iron (HT250) are studied in this paper. Keeping the laser quenching spot constant, 12 cast iron discs are laser quenched by changing the laser quenching power and scanning speed. Various mechanical, tribological, and dynamical testing equipment are used to characterize the properties of the laser quenched cast iron discs, in terms of the surface hardness, residual stress, friction coefficient, and frictional vibrations and noise of the cast iron discs. The experimental results show that after laser surface quenching, the surface hardness of the cast iron disc has been increased more than 4 times, the residual stress on the disc surface is changed from tensile stress to compressive stress, the friction coefficients of the laser quenched cast iron discs have been significantly increased, and the vibration and noise generated from the laser quenched cast iron discs have been significantly changed. This research has significance to the improvement of the surface performance of automotive brake discs and the control of braking frictional vibrations and noise.

Abstract:The surface properties of 40CrMnMo7 steel have been increased by ionic nitriding thermo chemical treatment followed by laser quenching. Nitriding treatment increases the wear resistance and decreases the wear coefficient, guaranteeing an uniform, though shallow, hardening depth. Combining nitriding with laser quenching has been shown to increase of the hardening depth, while retaining the advantages obtained by the first treatment. In this work the effect of laser quenching parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties of 40CrMnMo7 steel have been investigated and predictive models developed suitable for further optimization of the process. DoE has been exploited to reduce the number of experiments and for evaluating by statistic methods the optimized process parameters.

Abstract:The thermal quenching technology(quenched at 890 ℃ and tempered at 420 ℃) and then powerful shot peening of 60CrMnBA spring steel was studied.The results show that the mechanical properties of 60CrMnBA spring steel treated with this process are best.The surface residual compressive stress and fatigue strength of the 60CrMnBA spring steel is significantly improved by power shot peening.Its performance index can meet the technical requirements.

Abstract:Under extreme conditions such as high speed and heavy load, 18Cr2Ni4WA steel cannot meet the service requirements even after carburizing and quenching processes. In order to obtain better surface mechanical properties and tribological property, a hollow cathode ion source diffusion strengthening device was used to nitride the traditional carburizing and quenching samples. Unlike traditional ion carbonitriding technology, the low-temperature ion carbonitriding technology used in this article can increase the surface hardness of the material by 50% after 3 h of treatment, from the original 600 HV0.1 to 900 HV0.1, while the core hardness only decreases by less than 20%. The effect of post-ion carbonitriding treatment on mechanical properties and tribological properties of the carburized and quenched 18Cr2Ni4WA steel was investigated. Samples in different treatment are characterized using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optimal SRV-4 high temperature tribotester, as well as Vickers hardness tester. Under two conditions of 6N light load and 60 N heavy load, compared with untreated samples, the wear rate of ion carbonitriding samples decreased by more than 99%, while the friction coefficient remained basically unchanged. Furthermore, the careful selection of ion nitrocarburizing and carburizing tempering temperatures in this study has been shown to significantly enhance surface hardness and wear resistance, while preserving the overall hardness of the carburized sample. The present study demonstrates the potential of ion carbonitriding technology as a viable post-treatment method for carburized gears.

Abstract:This study investigates a hybrid surface enhancement technique that combines Quench Polish Quench (QPQ) with ultrasonic rolling to augment the durability of 42CrMo gears against wear and fatigue. Analysis reveals that post-treatment, the composite nitride layer on the gear surface maintains its original phase composition, evidenced by the absence of new diffraction peaks in X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. Nevertheless, a noticeable broadening in these peaks suggests grain refinement and the presence of microstrain due to the rolling process. Incremental static pressures improve the mechanical characteristics of the surface, with the layer treated at 0.6 MPa exhibiting the lowest wear rate (3.15 x 10 -8 mm 3 N -1 m - 1 ). Oxidative wear increases at elevated temperatures (100 degrees C), yet under lubricated conditions, Coefficient Of Friction (COF) of the treated layer significantly reduces. The predominant wear mechanisms include mild abrasive wear, oxidative wear, and adhesion. Excessive impact force, particularly at 0.6 MPa, risks surface cracking and subsequent degradation in fatigue resistance. Optimal fatigue performance is achieved with a static pressure of 0.4 MPa, corresponding to a surface strength of 2300 MPa and a fatigue life of 3.23 x 10 6 cycles.
Influences of tooth flank finishing after fine particle shot peening on tooth surface texture and fatigue life of vacuum carbonitrided gears

Abstract:Vacuum carbonitriding has recently been attracting attention as a heat treatment to reduce the size and weight of power transmissions. In this study, all of the chromium molybdenum steel test gears were vacuum carbonitrided after hobbing. The roughness of test gears was finished by a gear grinding machine to about 3 μmRz on tooth profile. These gears were called Gear G. Additionally, fine particle shot peening was applied on some of Gear G to improve the bending strength by providing work hardening and compressive residual stress on tooth flank. These gears were named Gear GS. Their load carrying capacity was investigated through running tests using a gear testing machine. The endurance limit of Gear G was about 2150 MPa in maximum Hertzian stress at the pitch point. This is an improvement of about 25 % over that of the carburized gear. However, the endurance limit of Gear GS was lower than that of Gear G. In order to investigate this factor, each of the surface topology were observed using a laser microscope. Comparatively, the rate of contact area was decreased after shot peening. This means that the surface topology of Gear GS must be improved, since failure occurs in shorter cycles on Gear GS. In order to simulate the surface roughness finished by the gear lapping technology which has been developed by the authors, some of Gear GS were polished to about 1 μmRz on tooth profile. These gears were called Gear GSP. According to running tests of Gear GSP, the fatigue life was longer than those of Gear G and GS, because the rate of contact area was improved by polishing. It is concluded that if the vacuum carbonitrided gear was treated by grinding, fine particle shot peening and the gear lapping in turn, the appropriate load carrying capacity may be obtained.

Abstract:Laser surface hardening is one of the effective methods to enhance the mechanical properties of localised surface area of engineering parts made of different types of steels and other metals like ultra-high strength steel etc. Laser surface hardening has many advantages over conventional hardening process like, self-quenching, very fast, control over energy input and localised hardening etc. In order to further improve the surface quality and mechanical properties of 30CrMnSiNi2A ultra-high strength steel parts fabricated by laser deposition manufacturing (LDM). The quenching modified layer was prepared on the surface of 30CrMnSiNi2A steel by laser quenching technology. This work presents the effect of different laser parameters on the surface morphology and mechanical properties of 30CrMnSiNi2A steel after laser hardening. The experimental data of OM morphology, microstructure, micro-hardness and wear property of hardened layer were analyzed by using the methods of range analysis. Effects of these parameters over the micro hardness of the surface are described. It has been found that, there is around 20% increase in hardness after laser hardening. It considerably debased the surface roughness and wear rate of LDM 30CrMnSi2A alloy parts, which has decreased by 53% and 57% than without laser surface hardening parts. Accordingly, industrial applications of laser deposition manufacturing 30CrMnSi2A alloy parts were supposed to be widened by this study.

Abstract:Laser quenching has a short process cycle and high production efficiency, and it plays an important role in automobile, ship, machinery manufacturing, and other fields. The surface hardness of 40Cr steel laser quenching parts is uneven by unreasonable set on the quenching overlap zone. This will affect the microstructure of the quenched layer, resulting in cracking, corrosion during service, and other hazards that ultimately reduce reliability. Numerical simulations provide an effective way to quantitatively reveal the transient evolution of the multi-field coupling between temperature field, stress field, and phase transition field in quenching, which directly determines the extent of the overlap zone and quenching properties. The quenched phase transition layer profile is predicted to effectively determine the extent of the secondary tempering softening zone and solve the bottleneck problem of uneven surface hardness in quenching. The innovation of this paper is to establish a multi-field coupled numerical model of the 40Cr steel multi-track laser quenching process. The transient quenching temperature, phase transition hardening, and stress distribution were numerically calculated, and the size of the tempering zone under different overlapping rates was evaluated, revealing the internal coupling mechanism and correlation between multi-fields during the laser quenching. The quenching temperature, microstructure, and hardness distribution of 40Cr steel were tested by an infrared thermometer, Axio Vert A1 Zeiss microscope, Thermo ScientificTM Apreo scanning electron microscope, and Q10M microhardness tester, which verified the effectiveness of numerical simulation. The research can provide an important theoretical basis for optimizing quenching process parameters in production.

Abstract:A robot-based laser 3D hardening method is proposed as a finishing operation to increase the wear resistance of the metal end-products. The laser hardening process of the surface layer of the products by changing its structure is one of the most effective methods of selective surface hardening. Thermal hardening of metals and alloys by laser radiation is based on local heating of a surface area under the influence of radiation and subsequent cooling of this surface area at a supercritical speed due to heat removal into the inner layers of the metal. The used robot-based laser 3D system (FANUC industrial robot and SCANLAB scanning optics) allows processing the surfaces of any complexity and geometry, including the shafts of the gear mechanism of the seed drill. It was found that the development and improvement of the technological process of manufacturing steel shafts of the gearbox of the seed drill is an urgent technological problem due to the rapid retirement of the shaft, which leads to the expenditure of time and money for its replacement. The most heavily loaded sections of the shaft were pre-estimated using the SolidWorks Simulation software package. A high-power TruDisk 8002 solid-state disk laser with a maximum laser power of 8 kW and a wavelength of laser radiation of 1030 nm is used for high-quality laser surface treatment of the AISI 1066 steel shaft of the gear mechanism. The laser surface heat treatment was carried out using a constant power strategy (continuous mode), varying the laser power in the range of 1.35–2.25 kW. Based on the Fe-Mn two-component state diagram, the critical points of the temperature of complete austenization of the studied steel were previously predicted taking into account the chemical composition of the material. Additionally, the energy density values of the laser beam with a diameter of 1 mm on the working surface was estimated. The results showed that the surface hardness of the shaft was about 2.5 times higher compared to the untreated surface. The working ranges of laser heat treatment parameters of the gearbox shaft were established to increase the hardening intensity (100–150%) of the responsible areas.
