Abstract:The Stern diatomic sequence is closely linked to continued fractions via the Gauss map on the unit interval, which in turn can be understood via systematic subdivisions of the unit interval. Higher dimensional analogues of continued fractions, called multidimensional continued fractions, can be produced through various subdivisions of a triangle. We define triangle partition-Stern sequences (TRIP-Stern sequences for short), higher-dimensional generalizations of the Stern diatomic sequence, from the method of subdividing a triangle via various triangle partition algorithms. We then explore several combinatorial results about TRIP-Stern sequences, which may be used to give rise to certain well-known sequences. We finish by generalizing TRIP-Stern sequences and presenting analogous results for these generalizations.

Abstract:We define a triangular array closely related to Stern's diatomic array and show that for a fixed integer $r\geq 1$, the sum $u_r(n)$ of the $r$th powers of the entries in row $n$ satisfy a linear recurrence with constant coefficients. The proof technique yields a vast generalization. In certain cases we can be more explicit about the resulting linear recurrence.

Abstract:Stern's diatomic sequence with its intrinsic repetition and refinement structure between consecutive powers of $2$ gives rise to a rather natural probability measure on the unit interval. We construct this measure and show that it is purely singular continuous, with a strictly increasing, Hölder continuous distribution function. Moreover, we relate this function with the solution of the dilation equation for Stern's diatomic sequence.

Abstract:We answer a question of Calkin and Wilf concerning the maximal order of Stern's diatomic sequence. Specifically, we prove that $$\limsup_{n\to\infty}\frac{a(n)}{\varphi^{\log_2 n}}=\frac{\varphi^{\log_2 3}}{\sqrt{5}},$$ where $\varphi=(\sqrt{5}+1)/2$ is the golden ratio. This improves on previous results given by Berlekamp, Conway, and Guy, who showed that the limit value was bounded above by 1.25, and by Calkin and Wilf, who showed that the exact value was in the interval $[({\varphi}/{\sqrt{5}})({3}/{2})^{\log_2\varphi},(\varphi+1)/{\sqrt{5}}].$

Binary Signed-Digit Integers, the Stern Diatomic Sequence and Stern Polynomials

Abstract:Stern's diatomic sequence is a well-studied and simply defined sequence with many fascinating characteristics. The binary signed-digit (BSD) representation of integers is used widely in efficient computation, coding theory and other applications. We link these two objects, showing that the number of $i$-bit binary signed-digit representations of an integer $n<2^i$ is the $(2^i-n)^\text{th}$ element in Stern's diatomic sequence. This correspondence makes the vast range of results known about the Stern diatomic sequence available for consideration in the study of binary signed-digit integers, and vice versa. Applications of this relationship discussed in this paper include a weight-distribution theorem for BSD representations, linking these representations to Stern polynomials, a recursion for the number of optimal BSD representations of an integer along with their Hamming weight, stemming from an easy recursion for the leading coefficients and degrees of Stern polynomials, and the identification of all integers having a maximal number of such representations.

Abstract:To investigate hyperbinary expansions of a nonnegative integer $n$, an edge-labelled directed graph $A(n)$ has recently been introduced. After pointing out some new simple facts about its cyclomatic number, we give a relatively simple description of its structure and prove that if $m,n$ are even numbers for which $A(n)$ and $A(m)$ are isomorphic as edge-labelled graphs, then $m=n$. From the structure of $A(n)$ we also derive a formula and an efficient algorithm for the Stern's diatomic sequence.

Abstract:We study the largest values of the $r$th row of Stern's diatomic array. In particular, we prove some conjectures of Lansing. Our main tool is the connection between the Stern sequence, alternating binary expansions and continuants. This allows us to reduce the problem of ordering the elements of the Stern sequence to the problem of ordering continuants. We describe an operation that increases the value of a continuant, allowing us to reduce the problem of largest continuants to ordering continuants of very special shape. Finally, we order these special continuants using some identities and inequalities involving Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Roland Bacher conjectured three identities concerning Stern's sequence and its twist. In this paper we prove Bacher's conjectures. Possibly of independent interest, we also give a way to compute the Stern value (or twisted Stern value) of a number based solely on its binary expansion.

Abstract:In a recent preprint on ArXiv, Bacher introduced a twisted version of the Stern sequence. His paper contains in particular three conjectures relating the generating series for the Stern sequence and for the twisted Stern sequence. Soon afterwards Coons published two papers in {\it Integers}: first he proved these conjectures, second he used his result to obtain a correlation-type identity for the Stern sequence. We recall here a simple result of Reznick and we state a similar result for the twisted Stern sequence. We deduce an easy proof of Coons' identity, and a simple proof of Bacher's conjectures. Furthermore we prove identities similar to Coons' for variations on the Stern sequence that include Bacher's sequence.

These substitution tilings are additive in a sense that will be clarified later and lead to new nonperiodic tilings in one and two dimensions.

Abstract:Stern's diatomic series, denoted by (a(n))n≥0 , is defined by the recurrence relations a(2n)=a(n) and a(2n+1)=a(n)+a(n+1) for n≥1 , with initial values a(0)=0 and a(1)=1 . A record-setter for a sequence (s(n))n≥0 is an index v such that s(i) holds for all i . In this paper, we provide a complete description of the record-setters for the Stern sequence. As a consequence, we prove that the running max sequence of the Stern sequence is not 2-regular.

Abstract:We show that the number of short binary signed-digit representations of an integer $n$ is equal to the $n$-th term in the Stern sequence. Various proofs are provided, including direct, bijective, and generating function proofs. We also show that this result can be derived from recent work of Monroe on binary signed-digit representations of a fixed length.

Abstract:We investigate two kinds of q -analogues of generalized Stirling numbers. One is a q -analogue of Hsu-Shiue’s generalized Stirling numbers and the other is a q -analogue of Comtet’s numbers. In particular, we derive a q -analogue of an equality of Dobinski-type. Moreover, a determinant of the matrix consisting of the q -analogue of Comtet’s numbers is evaluated.

Abstract:The Stern sequence (s(n)) is defined by s(0) = 0, s(1) = 1, s(2n) = s(n), s(2n+1) = s(n) + s(n+1). Stern showed in 1858 that gcd(s(n),s(n+1)) = 1, and that for every pair of relatively prime positive integers (a,b), there exists a unique n so that s(n) = a and s(n+1) = b. We show that, in a strong sense, the average value of s(n)/s(n+1) is 3/2, and that for all d, (s(n),s(n+1)) is uniformly distributed among all feasible pairs of congruence classes modulo d. More precise results are presented for d = 2 and 3.

Abstract:A series of bis[N,N-di-(4-methoxylphenyl)amino]arene dications 1(2+)-3(2+) have been synthesized and characterized. Their electronic structures were investigated by various experiments assisted by theoretical calculations. It was found that they are singlets in the ground state and that their diradical character is dependent on the bridging moiety. 3(2+) has a smaller singlet-triplet energy gap and its excited triplet state is thermally readily accessible. The work provides a nitrogen analogue of Thiele's hydrocarbon with considerable diradical character.
Imaging the disk around the luminous young star LkHalpha 101 with infrared interferometry

Abstract:The Herbig Ae/Be star LkHalpha 101 has been imaged at high angular resolution at a number of wavelengths in the near-infrared (from 1 to 3 microns) using the Keck 1 Telescope, and also observed in the mid-infrared (11.15 microns) using the U.C. Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI). The resolved circular disk with a central hole or cavity reported in Tuthill et al. (2001) is confirmed. This is consistent with an almost face-on view (inclination < 35 deg) onto a luminous pre- or early-main sequence object surrounded by a massive circumstellar disk. With a multiple-epoch study spanning almost four years, relative motion of the binary companion has been detected, together with evidence for changes in the brightness distribution of the central disk/star. The resolution of the LkHalpha 101 disk by ISI mid-infrared interferometry constitutes the first such measurement of a young stellar object in this wavelength region. The angular size was found to increase only slowly from 1.6 to 11.15 microns, inconsistent with standard power-law temperature profiles usually encountered in the literature, supporting instead models with a hot inner cavity and relatively rapid transition to a cool or tenuous outer disk. The radius of the dust-free inner cavity is consistent with a model of sublimation of dust in equilibrium with the stellar radiation field. Measurements from interferometry have been combined with published photometry enabling an investigation of the energetics and fundamental properties of this prototypical system.
