Abstract:In a recent preprint on ArXiv, Bacher introduced a twisted version of the Stern sequence. His paper contains in particular three conjectures relating the generating series for the Stern sequence and for the twisted Stern sequence. Soon afterwards Coons published two papers in {\it Integers}: first he proved these conjectures, second he used his result to obtain a correlation-type identity for the Stern sequence. We recall here a simple result of Reznick and we state a similar result for the twisted Stern sequence. We deduce an easy proof of Coons' identity, and a simple proof of Bacher's conjectures. Furthermore we prove identities similar to Coons' for variations on the Stern sequence that include Bacher's sequence.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Roland Bacher conjectured three identities concerning Stern's sequence and its twist. In this paper we prove Bacher's conjectures. Possibly of independent interest, we also give a way to compute the Stern value (or twisted Stern value) of a number based solely on its binary expansion.

Abstract:International Journal of Number Theory, Ahead of Print. This is the first part of a series of papers where the behavior of the invariants under twist by Dirichlet characters is studied for [math]-functions of degree 2. Here we show, under suitable conditions, that degree and internal shift remain unchanged under twist. The ultimate goal of the series is to prove a general version of Weil converse theorem with minimal assumptions on the shape of the functional equation of the twists.

Abstract:This paper describes how to compute algorithmically certain twisted signature invariants of a knot using twisted Blanchfield forms. An illustration of the algorithm is implemented on -torus knots. Additionally, using satellite formulas for these invariants, we also show how to obstruct the sliceness of certain iterated torus knots.

Abstract:The twisting number of a ribbon knot $K$ is the minimal number of tangle replacements on the symmetry axis of $J \# -J$ for any knot $J$ that is required to produce a symmetric union diagram of $K$. We prove that the twisting number is bounded below by the doubly slice genus and produce examples of ribbon knots with arbitrarily high twisting number, addressing a problem of Tanaka. As an application, we determine hitherto unknown doubly slice genera of some knots with 12 crossings.

Abstract:On a hyperbolic surface homeomorphic to a torus with a puncture, each oriented simple geodesic inherits a well-defined relative twist number in $[0,1]$, given by the ratio to its hyperbolic length of the hyperbolic distance between the orthogonal projections of the cusp (or boundary) on its left and right, respectively. With the Markov Uniqueness Conjecture in mind, the twist numbers for simple geodesics on the modular torus $\mathcal{X}$ are of particular interest. Up to isometries of $\mathcal{X}$, simple geodesics are parameterized naturally by $\mathbb{Q}\cap[0,1]$, and the relative twist number yields a map $\tau_{\mathcal{X}}:\mathbb{Q}\cap [0,1] \to [0,1]$. We use hyperbolic geometry and the Farey graph to show that the graph of $\tau_{\mathcal{X}}$ is dense in $[0,1]\times [0,1]$, and the same conclusion holds for any complete hyperbolic structure $\mathcal{Y}$ on the punctured torus. It follows that the twist number of a simple closed curve on the punctured torus does not extend continuously to the space of measured laminations. We also include some explicit calculations of geometric quantities associated to Markov triples, and the curious fact that $\tau_{\mathcal{X}}$ is never equal to zero.

Abstract:Conjecturally, there are only finitely many Heegaard Floer L-space knots in $S^3$ of a given genus. We examine this conjecture for twist families of knots $\{K_n\}$ obtained by twisting a knot $K$ in $S^3$ along an unknot $c$ in terms of the linking number $\omega$ between $K$ and $c$. We establish the conjecture in case of $|\omega| \neq 1$, prove that $\{K_n\}$ contains at most three L-space knots if $\omega = 0$, and address the case where $|\omega| = 1$ under an additional hypothesis about Seifert surgeries. To that end, we characterize a twisting circle $c$ for which $\{ (K_n, r_n) \}$ contains at least ten Seifert surgeries. We also pose a few questions about the nature of twist families of L-space knots, their expressions as closures of positive (or negative) braids, and their wrapping about the twisting circle.

Abstract:Subsurface projection is indispensable to studying the geometry of the mapping class group and the curve complex of a surface. When the subsurface is an annulus, this projection is sometimes called relative twisting. We give two alternate versions of relative twisting for the outer automorphism group of a free group. We use this to describe sufficient conditions for when a folding path enters the thin part of Culler–Vogtmann's Outer space. As an application of our condition, we produce a sequence of fully irreducible outer automorphisms whose axes in Outer space travel through graphs with arbitrarily short cycles; we also describe the asymptotic behavior of their translation lengths.

Abstract:Twisting a given knot $K$ about an unknotted circle $c$ a full $n \in \mathbb{N}$ times, we obtain a "twist family" of knots $\{ K_n \}$. Work of Kouno-Motegi-Shibuya implies that for a non-trivial twist family the crossing numbers $\{c(K_n)\}$ of the knots in a twist family grows unboundedly. However potentially this growth is rather slow and may never become monotonic. Nevertheless, based upon the apparent diagrams of a twist family of knots, one expects the growth should eventually be linear. Indeed we conjecture that if $\eta$ is the geometric wrapping number of $K$ about $c$, then the crossing number of $K_n$ grows like $n \eta(\eta-1)$ as $n \to \infty$. To formulate this, we introduce the "stable crossing number" of a twist family of knots and establish the conjecture for (i) coherent twist families where the geometric wrapping and algebraic winding of $K$ about $c$ agree and (ii) twist families with wrapping number $2$ subject to an additional condition. Using the lower bound on a knot's crossing number in terms of its genus via Yamada's braiding algorithm, we bound the stable crossing number from below using the growth of the genera of knots in a twist family. (This also prompts a discussion of the "stable braid index".) As an application, we prove that highly twisted satellite knots in a twist family where the companion is twisted as well satisfy the Satellite Crossing Number Conjecture.

Abstract:A classical two-stranded rope can be made by twisting two identical strands together under strain. Despite being conceptually simple, the contact-equations for helically twisted identical strands have only been solved within the last 20 years. Our goal here is basic: to understand the twisting of two circular strands, where one is thicker than the other. This is what we call an uneven rope. The geometry of the uneven rope depend on the ratio, $r$, between the diameters of the two strands. In particular, the maximally twisted geometry may be determined as a function of $r$ by solving the contact-equations for the two strands numerically.

Abstract:The Stern diatomic sequence is closely linked to continued fractions via the Gauss map on the unit interval, which in turn can be understood via systematic subdivisions of the unit interval. Higher dimensional analogues of continued fractions, called multidimensional continued fractions, can be produced through various subdivisions of a triangle. We define triangle partition-Stern sequences (TRIP-Stern sequences for short), higher-dimensional generalizations of the Stern diatomic sequence, from the method of subdividing a triangle via various triangle partition algorithms. We then explore several combinatorial results about TRIP-Stern sequences, which may be used to give rise to certain well-known sequences. We finish by generalizing TRIP-Stern sequences and presenting analogous results for these generalizations.

Abstract:The standard theory of endoscopy for real groups has two parallel formulations. The original formulation of Langlands and Shelstad relies on methods in harmonic analysis. The subsequent formulation of Adams, Barbasch and Vogan relies on sheaf-theoretic methods. The original formulation was extended by Kottwitz and Shelstad to twisted endoscopy. We extend the sheaf-theoretic formulation to the context of twisted endoscopy and provide applications for computing Arthur packets.

Abstract:We study the largest values of the $r$th row of Stern's diatomic array. In particular, we prove some conjectures of Lansing. Our main tool is the connection between the Stern sequence, alternating binary expansions and continuants. This allows us to reduce the problem of ordering the elements of the Stern sequence to the problem of ordering continuants. We describe an operation that increases the value of a continuant, allowing us to reduce the problem of largest continuants to ordering continuants of very special shape. Finally, we order these special continuants using some identities and inequalities involving Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:Twisted knot theory, introduced by M.O. Bourgoin, is a generalization of virtual knot theory. It naturally yields the notion of a twisted braid, which is closely related to the notion of a virtual braid due to Kauffman. In this paper, we first prove that any twisted link can be described as the closure of a twisted braid, which is unique up to certain basic moves. This is the analogue of the Alexander Theorem and the Markov Theorem for classical braids and links. Then we also give reduced presentations for the twisted braid group and the flat twisted braid group. These reduced presentations are based on the fact that these twisted braid groups on $n$ strands are generated by a single braiding element and a single bar element plus the generators of the symmetric group on $n$ letters.

Abstract:We prove the Bernoulli property for a class of counter-twisting linked twist maps. These compose orthogonal linear shears on the torus, orientated in the opposite sense to their co-twisting counterparts (where the shears reinforce one another). Compared to previous studies we focus on the parameter space corresponding to weak shears, near the critical parameter below which hyperbolicity is lost and the map is non-mixing. The approach developed to deal with this situation appears applicable to a broad range of non-uniformly hyperbolic examples.
