Abstract:In a recent paper, Roland Bacher conjectured three identities concerning Stern's sequence and its twist. In this paper we prove Bacher's conjectures. Possibly of independent interest, we also give a way to compute the Stern value (or twisted Stern value) of a number based solely on its binary expansion.

Abstract:In this article we consider questions related to the behavior of the moments $M_{m}\left( \left\{ z_{j}\right\} \right) $ when the indices are restricted to specific subsequences of integers, such as the even or odd moments. If $n\geq2$ we introduce the notion of symmetrical series of order $n,$ showing that if $\left\{ z_{j}\right\} \ $is symmetrical then $M_{m}\left( \left\{ z_{j}\right\} \right) =0$ whenever $n\nmid m;$ in particular, the odd moments of a symmetrical series of order $2$ vanish. We prove that when $\left\{ z_{j}\right\} \in l^{p}$ for some $p$ then several results characterizing the sequence from its moments hold. We show, in particular, that if $M_{m}\left( \left\{ z_{j}\right\} \right) =0$ whenever $n\nmid m$ then $\left\{ z_{j}\right\} $ is a rearrangement of a symmetrical series of order $n.$ We then construct examples of sequences whose moments vanish with required density. Lastly, we construct counterexamples of several of the results valid in the $l^{p}$ case if we allow the moment series to be all conditionally convergent. We show that for each arbitrary sequence of real numbers $\left\{ \mu _{m}\right\} _{m=0}^{\infty}$ there are real sequences $\left\{ u_{j}\right\} _{j=0}^{\infty}$ such that \[ \sum_{j=0}^{\infty}u_{j}^{2m+1}=\mu_{m}\,,\ \ \ m\geq0\,. \]

Abstract:Several aspects of the manifestation of the causality principle in LQP (local quantum physics) are reviewed or presented. Particular emphasis is given to those properties which are typical for LQP in the sense that they do go beyond the structure of general quantum theory and even escape the Lagrangian quantization methods of standard QFT. The most remarkable are those relating causality to the modular Tomita-Takesaki theory, since they bring in the basic concepts of antiparticles, charge superselections as well as internal and external (geometric and hidden) symmetries.

Abstract:Stern's diatomic sequence is a well-studied and simply defined sequence with many fascinating characteristics. The binary signed-digit (BSD) representation of integers is used widely in efficient computation, coding theory and other applications. We link these two objects, showing that the number of $i$-bit binary signed-digit representations of an integer $n<2^i$ is the $(2^i-n)^\text{th}$ element in Stern's diatomic sequence. This correspondence makes the vast range of results known about the Stern diatomic sequence available for consideration in the study of binary signed-digit integers, and vice versa. Applications of this relationship discussed in this paper include a weight-distribution theorem for BSD representations, linking these representations to Stern polynomials, a recursion for the number of optimal BSD representations of an integer along with their Hamming weight, stemming from an easy recursion for the leading coefficients and degrees of Stern polynomials, and the identification of all integers having a maximal number of such representations.

Abstract:We investigate the combinatorial sequences $A(M, n)$ introduced by W. G. Brown (1964) and W. T. Tutte (1980) appearing in enumeration of convex polyhedra. Their formula is $$A(M, n) = \frac{2 (2M+3)!}{(M+2)! M!}\,\frac{(4n+2M+1)!}{n! (3n + 2M + 3)!} $$ with $n, M =0, 1, 2, \ldots$, and we conceive it as Hausdorff moments, where $M$ is a parameter and $n$ enumerates the moments. We solve exactly the corresponding Hausdorff moment problem: $A(M, n) = \int_{0}^{R} x^{n} W_{M}(x) d x$ on the natural support $(0, R)$, $R = 4^{4}/3^{3}$, using the method of inverse Mellin transform. We provide explicitly the weight functions $W_{M}(x)$ in terms of the Meijer G-functions $G_{4, 4}^{4, 0}$, or equivalently, the generalized hypergeometric functions ${_{3}F_{2}}$ (for $M=0, 1$) and ${_{4}F_{3}}$ (for $M \geq 2$). For $M = 0, 1$, we prove that $W_{M}(x)$ are non-negative and normalizable, thus they are probability distributions. For $M \geq 2$, $W_{M}(x)$ are signed functions vanishing on the extremities of the support. By rephrasing this problem entirely in terms of Meijer G representations we reveal an integral relation which directly furnishes $W_M(x)$ based on ordinary generating function of $A(M, n)$ as an input. All the results are studied analytically as well as graphically.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This article presents a new scheme for implementing the method of moments with interpolative closure (MOMIC), which was proposed by Frenklach and Harris in 1987. The new scheme can be implemented with arbitrary moment sequences. A new interpolation scheme, which is implemented among the square root of logarithms of newly defined normalized moments, was verified to be suitable for interpolation with only three known data points. The new scheme was applied to studies on Brownian coagulation in both free-molecular and continuum-slip regimes. The new MOMIC with integer moment sequence was verified to exhibit nearly identical accuracy to its original version as well as other state-of-the-art numerical methods, including QMOM, TEMOM, and log MM, and higher accuracy than these referenced numerical methods as the fractional moment sequence was employed. The study enhances the capability of the MOMIC for solving population balance equations. © 2017 American Association for Aerosol Research
The Problem of Moments: A Bunch of Classical Results With Some Novelties

Abstract:We summarize significant classical results on (in)determinacy of measures in terms of their finite positive integer order moments. Well-known is the role of the smallest eigenvalues of Hankel matrices, starting from Hamburger's results a century ago and ending with the great progress made only in recent times by C. Berg and collaborators. We describe here known results containing necessary and sufficient conditions for moment (in)determinacy in both Hamburger and Stieltjes moment problems. In our exposition we follow an approach different from that commonly used. There are novelties well complementing the existing theory. Among them are: (a) to emphasize on the geometric interpretation of the indeterminacy conditions; (b) exploit fine properties of the eigenvalues of perturbed symmetric matrices allowing to derive new lower bounds for the smallest eigenvalues of Hankel matrices; these bounds are used for concluding indeterminacy; (c) provide new arguments to confirm classical results; (d) give new numerical illustrations involving commonly used probability distributions.

Abstract:In this work we apply Hausdorff moment problem to prove a necessary and sufficient condition for a complex sequence to be positive. Then we apply it to a subclass of genus $0$ entire functions $f(z)$ to obtain an infinite family of necessary and sufficient conditions for $f(z)$ to have only negative roots, which in turn to give infinite many necessary and sufficient conditions for the Riemann hypothesis and the generalized Riemann hypothesis with a primitive Dirichlet character.

Abstract:We investigate the moment problem and Jacobi matrix associated -- by the operator theoretic framework of the semilocal trace formula -- to each finite set $S$ of places of $\mathbb Q$ containing the archimedean place. The measure is given by the absolute value squared of the product over $S$ of local factors restricted to the critical line. We treat the case $S=\{p,\infty\}$, where a single prime $p$ is adjoined to the archimedean place. We find that all the key ingredients such as the moments, the orthogonal polynomials and the Jacobi matrices can be expressed as power series in terms of the parameter $q:=1/p$. We show that the series which appear for the moments themselves are Lambert series. The study of the $q$-series for the coefficients of the Jacobi matrix, and for the associated orthogonal polynomials reveals an intriguing integrality result: all those coefficients belong to the ring $\mathbb Z[\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}]$ obtained by adjoining $1 / \sqrt{2}$ to the ring of integers. The main result of this paper is the conceptual explanation of this integrality property using Catalan numbers.

Abstract:Let $B_{n}(t)$ be a $n$-th Stern polynomial and let $e(n)=\op{deg}B_{n}(t)$ be its degree. In this note we continue our study started in \cite{Ul} of the arithmetic properties of the sequence of Stern polynomials and the sequence $\{e(n)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$. We also study the sequence $d(n)=\op{ord}_{t=0}B_{n}(t)$. Among other things we prove that $d(n)=\nu(n)$, where $\nu(n)$ is the maximal power of 2 which dividies the number $n$. We also count the number of the solutions of the equations $e(m)=i$ and $e(m)-d(m)=i$ in the interval $[1,2^{n}]$. We also obtain an interesting closed expression for a certain sum involving Stern polynomials.

Abstract:We study a family of measures originating from the signatures of the irreducible components of representations of the unitary group, as the size of the group goes to infinity. Given a random signature $\lambda $ of length $N$ with counting measure $\textbf {m}$, we obtain a random signature $\mu $ of length $N-1$ through projection onto a unitary group of lower dimension. The signature $\mu $ interlaces with the signature $\lambda $, and we record the data of $\mu ,\lambda $ in a random rectangular Young diagram $w$. We show that under a certain set of conditions on $\lambda $, both $\textbf {m}$ and $w$ converge as $N\to \infty $. We provide an explicit moment-generating function relationship between the limiting objects. We further show that the moment-generating function relationship induces a bijection between bounded measures and certain continual Young diagrams, which can be viewed as a quantized analogue of the Markov–Krein correspondence.
On a Generalized Moment Integral containing Riemann's Zeta Function: Analysis and Experiment

Abstract:Here, we study both analytically and numerically, an integral $Z(\sigma,r)$ related to the mean value of a generalized moment of Riemann's zeta function. Analytically, we predict finite, but discontinuous values and verify the prediction numerically, employing a modified form of Cesàro summation. Further, it is proven and verified numerically that for certain values of $\sigma$, the derivative function $Z^{\prime}(\sigma,n)$ equates to one generalized tine of the Dirac comb function without recourse to the use of limits, test functions or distributions. A surprising outcome of the numerical study arises from the observation that the proper integral form of the derivative function is quasi-periodic, which in turn suggests a periodicity of the integrand. This possibility is also explored and it is found experimentally that zeta function values offset (shifted) over certain segments of the imaginary complex number line are moderately auto-correlated.

Abstract:Let $q$ be an odd prime, and let $T_{q}:\mathbb{Z}\rightarrow\mathbb{Z}$ be the Shortened $qx+1$ map, defined by $T_{q}\left(n\right)=n/2$ if $n$ is even and $T_{q}\left(n\right)=\left(qn+1\right)/2$ if $n$ is odd. The study of the dynamics of these maps is infamous for its difficulty, with the characterization of the dynamics of $T_{3}$ being an alternative formulation of the famous Collatz Conjecture. This series of papers presents a new paradigm for studying such arithmetic dynamical systems by way of a neglected area of ultrametric analysis which we have termed $\left(p,q\right)$-adic analysis, the study of functions from the $p$-adics to the $q$-adics, where $p$ and $q$ are distinct primes. In this, the first-and-a-halfth paper of the series, as a first application, we show that the numen $\chi_{q}$ of $T_{q}$ can be used in conjunction with the Correspondence Principle (CP) and classic complex-analytic tools of analytic number theory to reformulate the study of periodic points of $T_{q}$ in terms of a contour integral via an application of Perron's Formula to a Dirichlet series generated by $\chi_{q}$ and the function $M_{q}$ introduced in the first paper in this series, for which we establish functional equations, which we use to derive their meromorphic continuations to the left half-plane. The hypergeometric growth of the series as $\textrm{Re}\left(s\right)\rightarrow-\infty$ seems to preclude direct evaluation of the contour integrals via residues, but asymptotic results may still be achievable.

Abstract:We investigate the properties of the moments of the cot function using the central factorial numbers. Using a new integral representation of the central factorial numbers, we find a new way to express these moments in terms of recursive sums and integrals. This allows us to compute 'recursive' generalized harmonic series and multiple integrals as a linear combination of the Dirichlet eta functions at odd integers.

Abstract:We investigate the Stern polynomials defined by $B_0 ( t ) =0,B_1 ( t ) =1$, and for $n \geq 2$ by the recurrence relations $B_{2n}( t) =tB_{n}( t) ,$ $B_{2n+1}( t) =B_n( t) +B_{n+1}( t) $. We prove that all possible rational roots of that polynomials are $0,-1,-1/2,-1/3$. We give complete characterization of $n$ such that $deg( B_n) = deg( B_{n+1}) $ and $deg( B_n) =deg( B_{n+1}) =deg( B_{n+2}) $. Moreover, we present some result concerning reciprocal Stern polynomials.
