Abstract:Witten's gauged linear sigma model [Wi1] is one of the universal frameworks or structures that lie behind stringy dualities. Its A-twisted moduli space at genus 0 case has been used in the Mirror Principle [L-L-Y] that relates Gromov-Witten invariants and mirror symmetry computations. In this paper the A-twisted moduli stack for higher genus curves is defined and systematically studied. It is proved that such a moduli stack is an Artin stack. For genus 0, it has the A-twisted moduli space of [M-P] as the coarse moduli space. The detailed proof of the regularity of the collapsing morphism by Jun Li in [L-L-Y: I and II] can be viewed as a natural morphism from the moduli stack of genus 0 stable maps to the A-twisted moduli stack at genus 0. Due to the technical demand of stacks to physicists and the conceptual demand of supersymmetry to mathematicians, a brief introduction of each topic that is most relevant to the main contents of this paper is given in the beginning and the appendix respectively. Themes for further study are listed in the end.

Abstract:We analyze Weierstrass cycles and tautological rings in moduli spaces of smooth algebraic curves and in moduli spaces of integral algebraic curves with embedded disks with special attention to moduli spaces of curves having genus less than or equal to 6. In particular, we show that our general formula gives a good estimate for the dimension of Weierstrass cycles for low genera.

Abstract:We define the logarithmic tautological rings of the moduli spaces of Deligne-Mumford stable curves (together with a set of additive generators lifting the decorated strata classes of the standard tautological rings). While these algebras are infinite dimensional, a connection to polyhedral combinatorics via a new theory of homological piecewise polynomials allows an effective study. A complete calculation is given in genus 0 via the algebra of piecewise polynomials on the cone stack of the associated Artin fan (lifting Keel's presentation of the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$). Counterexamples to the simplest generalizations in genus 1 are presented. We show, however, that the structure of the log tautological rings is determined by the complete knowledge of all relations in the standard tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves. In particular, Pixton's conjecture concerning relations in the standard tautological rings lifts to a complete conjecture for relations in the log tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves. Several open questions are discussed. We develop the entire theory of logarithmic tautological classes in the context of arbitrary smooth normal crossings pairs $(X,D)$ with explicit formulas for intersection products. As a special case, we give an explicit set of additive generators of the full logarithmic Chow ring of $(X,D)$ in terms of Chow classes on the strata of $X$ and piecewise polynomials on the cone stack.

Cohomology rings of the moduli of one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study on the cohomology rings of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{d,\chi}$ of semistable one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane. We introduce a set of tautological relations of geometric origin, including Mumford-type relations, and prove that their ideal is generated by certain primitive relations via the Virasoro operators. Using BPS integrality and the computational efficiency of Virasoro operators, we show that our geometric relations completely determine the cohomology rings of the moduli stacks up to degree 5. As an application, we verify the refined Gopakumar--Vafa/Pandharipande--Thomas correspondence for local $\mathbb{P}^2$ in degree 5. Furthermore, we propose a substantially strengthened version of the $P=C$ conjecture, originally introduced by Shen and two of the authors. This can be viewed as an analogue of the $P=W$ conjecture in a compact and Fano setting.

In his article, Ghys showed that the analytic germ of the representation variety of in , pointed at the trivial morphism, determines the Kuranishi space of . In this note, we show that the tautological family above a Zariski analytic open subset V in remains complete. Moreover, the computation of the isotropy group of a complex structure in Teichmüller space, allows us to affirm that the quotient stack is an open substack of the Teichmüller stack of .

Abstract:In recent work by Arena, Canning, Clader, Haburcak, Li, Mok, and Tamborini it was proven that for infinitely many values of $g$ and $n$, there exist non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ of smooth genus $g$, $n$-pointed curves. Here we show how a generalization of their technique allows to cover most of the remaining cases, proving the existence of non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ for all but finitely many values of $g$ and $n$.

Tautological and non-tautological cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

Abstract:The tautological Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ was defined and calculated by van der Geer in 1999. By studying the Torelli pullback of algebraic cycles classes from $\mathcal{A}_g$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{ct}}$ of genus $g$ of curves of compact type, we prove that the product class $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_5]\in \mathsf{CH}^{5}(\mathcal{A}_6)$ is non-tautological, the first construction of an interesting non-tautological algebraic class on the moduli spaces of abelian varieties. For our proof, we use the complete description of the the tautological ring $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_6^{\mathrm{ct}})$ in genus 6 conjectured by Pixton and recently proven by Canning-Larson-Schmitt. The tautological ring $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_6^{\mathrm{ct}})$ has a 1-dimensional Gorenstein kernel, which is geometrically explained by the Torelli pullback of $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_5]$. More generally, the Torelli pullback of the difference between $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_{g-1}]$ and its tautological projection always lies in the Gorenstein kernel of $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{ct}})$. The product map $\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_{g-1}\rightarrow \mathcal{A}_g$ is a Noether-Lefschetz locus with general Neron-Severi rank 2. A natural extension of van der Geer's tautological ring is obtained by including more general Noether-Lefschetz loci. Results and conjectures related to cycle classes of Noether-Lefschetz loci for all $g$ are presented.

Abstract:We describe a new approach to the definition of the moduli functor of stable varieties. While there is wide agreement as to what classes of varieties should appear, the notion of a family of stable surfaces is quite subtle, as key numerical invariants may fail to be constant in flat families. Our approach is to add natural stack structure to stable varieties. For example, given a canonical model we take the global-quotient stack structure arising from its realization as Proj of the canonical ring. Deformations of the stack structure preserve key numerical invariants of the stable variety, including the top self-intersection of the canonical divisor. This approach yields a transparent construction of the moduli stack of stable varieties as a global quotient of a suitable Hilbert scheme of weighted projective stacks.

Abstract:In 1984, Charney and Lee defined a category of stable curves and exhibited a rational homology equivalence from its geometric realisation to (the analytification of) the moduli stack of stable curves, also known as the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen compactification. We strengthen this result by showing that, in fact, this category captures the stratified homotopy type of the moduli stack. In particular, it classifies constructible sheaves via an exodromy equivalence.

Abstract:For a variety over certain topological rings $R$, like $\mathbb{Z}_p$ or $\mathbb{C}$, there is a well-studied way to topologize the $R$-points on the variety. In this paper, we generalize this definition to algebraic stacks. For an algebraic stack $\mathfrak{X}$ over many topological rings $R$, we define a topology on the isomorphism classes of $R$-points of $\mathfrak{X}$. We prove expected properties of the resulting topological spaces including functoriality. Then, we extend the definition to the case when $R$ is the ring of adeles of some global field. Finally, we use this last definition to strengthen the local-global compatibility for stacky curves of Bhargava--Poonen to a strong approximation result.

Abstract:For a smooth projective curve $X$ over $\mathbb C_p$ and any reductive group $G$, we show that the moduli stack of $G$-Higgs bundles on $X$ is a twist of the moduli stack of v-topological $G$-bundles on $X_v$ in a canonical way. We explain how a choice of an exponential trivialises this twist on points. This yields a geometrisation of Faltings' $p$-adic Simpson correspondence for $X$, which we recover as a homeomorphism between the points of moduli spaces. We also show that our twisted isomorphism sends the stack of $p$-adic representations of $\pi_1(X)$ to an open substack of the stack of semi-stable Higgs bundles of degree $0$.

Abstract:We introduce a new notion of generalized log twisted curves, which are marked nodal curves with additional data at the marked points. In the case when the markings are distinct this notion agrees with the notion of twisted curve introduced by Abramovich and Vistoli. In addition to developing the basic notions and results, we study in this article the moduli of such curves as well as contraction maps between them. This is motivated, in part, by applications to twisted stable maps which will be studied in a subsequent article.

Abstract:We use techniques of Alper-Hall-Rydh to prove a local structure theorem for smooth morphisms between smooth stacks around points with linearly reductive stabilizers. This implies that the good moduli space of a smooth stack over a base has equisingular fibers. As an application, we show that any two fibres have isomorphic $\ell$-adic cohomology rings and intersection cohomology groups. If we work over the complex numbers, we show that the family is topologically locally trivial on the base, and that the intersection cohomology groups of the fibers fit into a polarizable variation of pure Hodge structures. We apply these results to derive some consequences for the moduli spaces of $G$-bundles on smooth projective curves, and for the moduli spaces of sheaves on "negatively polarized" surfaces and on del Pezzo Gorenstein surfaces for nongeneric stability parameters.

Abstract:Inertia orbifolds homotopy-quotiented by rotation of geometric loops play a fundamental role not only in ordinary cyclic cohomology, but more recently in constructions of equivariant Tate-elliptic cohomology and generally of transchromatic characters on generalized cohomology theories. Nevertheless, existing discussion of such cyclified stacks has been relying on ad-hoc component presentations with intransparent and unverified stacky homotopy type. Following our previous formulation of transgression of cohomological charges ("double-dimensional reduction"), we explain how cyclification of -stacks is a fundamental and elementary base-change construction over moduli stacks in cohesive higher topos theory (cohesive homotopy-type theory). We prove that Ganter/Huan's extended inertia groupoid used to define equivariant quasi-elliptic cohomology is indeed a model for this intrinsically defined cyclification of orbifolds, and we show that cyclification implements transgression in group cohomology in general, and hence in particular the transgression of degree-4 twists of equivariant Tate-elliptic cohomology to degree-3 twists of orbifold K-theory on the cyclified orbifold. As an application, we show that the universal shifted integral 4-class of equivariant 4-Cohomotopy theory on ADE-orbifolds induces the Platonic 4-twist of ADE-equivariant Tate-elliptic cohomology, and we close by explaining how this should relate to elliptic M5-brane genera, under our previously formulated Hypothesis H .

Abstract:This is the first in a projected series of three papers in which we construct the second flip in the log minimal model program for $\bar{M}_g$. We introduce the notion of a weakly proper algebraic stack, which may be considered as an abstract characterization of those mildly non-separated moduli problems encountered in the context of Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT), and develop techniques for proving that a stack is weakly proper without the usual semistability analysis of GIT. We define a sequence of moduli stacks of curves involving nodes, cusps, tacnodes, and ramphoid cusps, and use the aforementioned techniques to show that these stacks are weakly proper. This will be the key ingredient in forthcoming work, in which we will prove that these moduli stacks have projective good moduli spaces which are log canonical models for $\bar{M}_g$.
