Abstract:As improving the construct validity of measures has been a fundamental concern in management research, we commend Bitektine, Hill, Song, and Vandenberghe (2019) for their efforts to develop and validate individual-level measures for organizational legitimacy, reputation, and status. These measurement instruments undoubtedly will be helpful to advance research on the micro-level antecedents and outcomes of these social evaluations and will prove instructive for the development of measures for related evaluations, such as organizational stigma, and celebrity. However, while we appreciate the authors’ work and contribution to a microfoundational agenda in research on social evaluations, we have some concerns with regard to their measurement approach. Specifically, although Bitektine and colleagues (2019) stress the multi-level nature of social evaluations, they do not translate this insight into a measurement instrument that acknowledges that individual evaluators hold both private judgments (“first-order judgments”) and judgments about the collective-level judgment (i.e., judgments of the judgments of other evaluators in a specific reference group, or “second-order judgments”). These two types of individual judgments reflect different facets of social evaluations and have different effects on individual behavior, and thus researchers need to avoid conflating them within a measurement instrument. Our commentary seeks to complement the approach of Bitektine and colleagues (2019) by sensitizing readers to the distinction between first-order and second-order judgments and by developing recommendations for future scale development efforts. These recommendations are given in a spirit of collegiality and with an understanding that progress in social evaluation research requires the concerted effort of many researchers over many years.

Abstract:Organizations seek to establish congruence between the social values associated with or implied by their activities and the norms of acceptable behavior in the larger social system of which they are a part. Insofar as these two value systems are congruent we can speak of organizational legitimacy. When an actual or potential disparity exists between the two value systems, there will exist a threat to organizational legitimacy. These threats take the form of legal, economic, and other social sanctions. In this paper, it is argued that an empirical focus on organizational efforts to become legitimate can aid in explaining and analyzing many organizational behaviors taken with respect to the environment, and further, can generate hypotheses and a conceptual perspective that can direct additional attention to the issue of organizational legitimacy. This paper provides a conceptual framework for the analysis of organizational legitimacy and the process of legitimation through which organizations act to increase their perceived legitimacy. It presents a number of examples including a discussion of the American Institute for Foreign Study as a demonstration of these ideas in action. Both the particular circumstances which can lead to problems of organizational legitimacy and some of the actions that can be taken to legitimate an organization are illustrated.

Abstract:The effectiveness of formal public sector accountability mechanisms is largely predicated on the individual perception of accountability. In particular, the individual's experienced relationship to account holders is key in understanding the effects of formal accountability mechanisms. This article develops a measurement instrument for felt relational accountability in public administration. We measure perceived legitimacy and expertise of the account holder, as crucial relational dimensions applicable to various accountability relations. The instrument was tested and cross validated among two samples of Dutch public employees. We discuss theoretical implications of studying accountability at the actor-level and provide practical applications of the instrument.

Abstract:We know that reputation in organisational contexts can be understood as a valuable asset that requires diligent management. It directly affects how a firm is publicly perceived, and indirectly, how a firm will perform economically. The establishment of social media as ubiquitous tools of communication have changed how corporations manage their reputation. Particularly CEOs face novel responsibilities, as they deal with their personal image, which at the same time affects the reputation of their firm. Whereas CEO and corporate reputation have been researched isolated from each other, little is known about how a CEO's social media reputation management affects corporate reputation. This research in progress paper aims to emphasise this research gap with a literature review on the current status of reputation management and measurement by means of social media. We further propose a research design that combines sentiment analysis, frequency detection, and content analysis and discuss further research prospects.

Abstract:Summary A number of studies have analysed how multinational enterprises (MNEs) develop appropriate strategies for managing the institutionally different contexts of various markets. However, we still know rather little about how MNEs manage different institutional pressures when they operate in emerging markets. These markets have a higher level of uncertainty as their values and structures undergo change. This paper investigates the microfoundations and routines that can be part of developing a firm's capability to achieve a legitimate and environmentally sustainable position in emerging markets. We focus upon the microfoundations and routines for managing regulative, normative, and cultural–cognitive pressures. The paper utilizes an extensive qualitative case study approach. It reports a study at corporate and subsidiary levels of 3 Swedish MNEs in the in 4 markets: Brazil, Russia, India and China. The study identifies a set of routines for managing each of the 3 institutional forces and supporting microfoundations at individual, interactive, and structural levels. We are thus able to offer new insights on how the institutional context interacts with MNE strategies and identify more generic routines and microfoundations behind the capability for developing a sustainable market position.

Abstract:This article presents a theoretical rationale and empirical evidence regarding the validity of scores obtained from two competing approaches to operationalizing scale items to measure emergent organizational properties. The authors consider whether items in scales intended to measure organizational properties should prompt survey takers to provide self- or group-referent responses. To achieve this, the general question of how items should be worded is studied through the specific case of the measurement of perceived collective efficacy, a perceptual variable referring to the beliefs of group members regarding their conjoint capability. Structural equation modeling results indicate that intergroup variability in goal attainment is explained well when organizational members are asked questions focused on group processes and outcomes. Aggregated perceptions of self-capability, on the other hand, do little to explain variability among groups in goal attainment. The results are important for the development of scales in future studies of emergent organizational properties.

On the Empirical Measurement of Legitimacy

Abstract:For decades, Tom Tyler had led the charge of making legitimacy and procedural justice core concepts and variables in the empirical study of compliance and cooperation in the social sciences. In this chapter, after laying out a conceptual map of the three types of legitimacy and the roles that procedures can play in legitimation, I show that much of Tyler’s work focuses on providing support for two assertions: that a belief in the legitimacy of local authorities leads people to comply, cooperate, and positively engage with them, and that fair procedures are a powerful way to make people develop these beliefs. I then argue that both of these claims are misleading. On the one hand, Tyler’s operationalization of legitimacy distorts it beyond common meaning. On the other hand, Tyler only measures and shows the effects of perceptions of procedural justice, and thus merely gives reason to focus on reforming institutions such that they appear just, rather than become just. The only way to avoid this unhappy Machiavellian outcome, I argue, is to once again bring in moral argumentation to discussions of institutional reform.

Abstract:Organizations mediate societal cultural belief systems and group-level encounters by filtering, and sometimes transforming, social information regarding which status characteristics are salient during group encounters embedded within organizations. This study uses status characteristics theory to add to our understanding of social status within organizations by explaining why organizations matter in determining which status characteristics will be activated within task groups. By analyzing status rankings within an organization of open source software programmers, we find that the organization develops its own unique shared belief system, which inculcates actors with beliefs about status characteristics that are potentially unique within the boundaries of the organization. Specifically, in this study we find that through a process of status generalization, organizational members create new status markers (location) that are potentially only meaningful for the given social situation, and they selectively nullify others (education and age). To the best of our knowledge, the current study is the first work in the expectation states tradition to demonstrate an outcome for an organization-level selection process for status characteristics. This paper adds to status characteristics theory by empirically analyzing how organizational contexts create boundaries around groups in which new and extant status characteristics are activated and in which predefined characteristics inherited from more global, society-level contexts are deactivated.

Abstract:The relationship between institutional logics and organizational legitimacy remains largely unaddressed in organizational theory and management research. We explore how individual evaluators primed with a particular institutional logic react to organizational signals sent by a firm's product/service pricing and by its engagement in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. In three experimental studies, we identify how the activation of a market logic or a family logic in evaluators’ minds moderates the effect of pricing and CSR engagement signals on their judgments of legitimacy of a firm, as well as on their behavioral intentions. An unexpected finding from our study was that, while participants primed with the family logic reacted positively to a CSR engagement signal sent by the firm but remained indifferent to a market-based premium-pricing signal, those primed with the market logic reacted positively to both premium-pricing and CSR engagement signals, suggesting that CSR engagement forms part of their understanding of the market logic.

Abstract:Grounded in theories in relational authenticity, self-verification, and impression management, this study examines the effect of enacting authenticity in CSR communication through digital media as a relationship-cultivating strategy on organization-public relationship (OPR) outcomes. Using data obtained from an online survey (N = 501), we conduct both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to validate the proposed theory-driven measure for authenticity in CSR communication. We examine how authenticity in CSR communication predicts the four dimensions of quality OPRs. Results of CFA reveal that authenticity in CSR communication comprises three dimensions – genuineness, reflection of true identity, and consistency. Hierarchical regression analyses indicate that authenticity in CSR communication predicts trust, commitment, satisfaction, and control mutuality. Major theoretical contributions of the study include: (1) Authenticity in CSR communication is an OPR antecedent. (2) The genuineness aspect of authenticity provides important implications for company-cause fit research on CSR communication. (3) The reflection of true identity can provide theoretical explanations as to what needs to be considered in practicing corporate social advocacy.

Abstract:Nowadays, most business and social interactions have moved to the internet, highlighting the relevance of creating online trust. One way to obtain a measure of trust is through reputation mechanisms, which record one's past performance and interactions to generate a reputational value. We observe that numerous existing reputation mechanisms share similarities with actual social phenomena; we call such mechanisms 'social reputation mechanisms'. The aim of this paper is to discuss several social phenomena and map these to existing social reputation mechanisms in a variety of scopes. First, we focus on reputation mechanisms in the individual scope, in which everyone is responsible for their own reputation. Subjective reputational values may be communicated to different entities in the form of recommendations. Secondly, we discuss social reputation mechanisms in the acquaintances scope, where one's reputation can be tied to another through vouching or invite-only networks. Finally, we present existing social reputation mechanisms in the neighbourhood scope. In such systems, one's reputation can heavily be affected by the behaviour of others in their neighbourhood or social group.

Abstract:Organizational legitimacy theory is an important theoretical tool for studying strong institutional environment, such as schools. The Chinese Scholars’research on organizational legitimacy, including educational system’s legitimacy, is bountiful, but they are basically not normative. This paper gives an overview of the previous studies on organizational legitimacy from the standpoint of new institutionalism, including its meaning, classification, formation mechanism and organizational strategies. The paper finds that the origin of the legitimacy is diverse, heterogeneous, complex and dynamic, and different organizations exist in different legitimate environments. Promoting legitimacy is an essential part of the process of organizational capacity building. Additionally, it forecasts the trends in the research of organizational legitimacy and the implication for educational research.

Abstract:This study reviews and compares the definitions and measurements of 'corporate reputation' used in 173 studies published in seven top-tier accounting and management journals between 1980 and 2020. Accounting scholars frequently fail to define 'reputation,' and if they do, definitions vary considerably between the accounting and management fields. We further find that measures of reputation do not fit well with its definition. The accounting literature often employs secondary financial measures, which poorly reflect stakeholders' reputation assessments. We develop a conceptual framework to better classify prior research and identify appropriate measures of reputation that match the chosen definition. We also suggest a number of further research opportunities: Accounting scholars may focus more on (a) stakeholders' subjective nonfinancial assessments; (b) the emotional appeal of companies and its relationship with competence and integrity assessments; (c) the role of stakeholders' normative expectations and (d) explicitly consider a multi-stakeholder perspective, where corporations have multiple reputations rather than one.

The increasing availability of other important digital data, such as news, stock market, or social media data, offers an opportunity to obtain a richer and more real-time understanding of S&T developments. In addition to expanding the breadth of data sets studied, that availability also increases the depth of studies by mining the full text for specific tokens, such as chemical compounds, or parsing acknowledgment sections for specific names. Sentiment analysis, also called opinion mining, is now commonly applied toward understanding how new ideas and products are perceived and adopted in different markets.

Abstract:A comparison is undertaken between scale development and index construction procedures to trace the implications of adopting a reflective versus formative perspective when creating multi‐item measures for organizational research. Focusing on export coordination as an illustrative construct of interest, the results show that the choice of measurement perspective impacts on the content, parsimony and criterion validity of the derived coordination measures. Implications for practising researchers seeking to develop multi‐item measures of organizational constructs are considered.

Abstract:This study developed and tested a theory-based measure of authentic leadership using five separate samples obtained from China, Kenya, and the United States. Confirmatory factor analyses supported a higher order, multidimensional model of the authentic leadership construct (the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire [ALQ]) comprising leader self-awareness, relational transparency, internalized moral perspective, and balanced processing. Structural equation modeling (SEM) demonstrated the predictive validity for the ALQ measure for important work-related attitudes and behaviors, beyond what ethical and transformational leadership offered. Finally, results revealed a positive relationship between authentic leadership and supervisor-rated performance. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
