Abstract:The importance of ethical leadership in organizations has been increasingly recognized, especially as a shield against unethical employee behaviors and corporate misconducts. Ethical leadership has been theorized to include two aspects: “moral person” and “moral manager.” This conceptualization resonates well with Chinese teachings of Confucius on leadership and management—namely xiuji (cultivating oneself) and anren (bringing the good to others). Based on the theoretical framework of ethical leadership, we develop and validate a new ethical leadership measure (ELM). Through qualitative studies (i.e., face-to-face interviews, open-ended surveys, and literature review) and five quantitative studies, we establish the reliability and convergent, discriminant, and predictive validities of the ELM in a Chinese context. In addition, using a US sample, we find that the ELM has partial measurement invariance across Chinese and American contexts.

Abstract:In light of a series of ethical scandals in China in recent years, this research aims to develop a reliable and valid scale to measure ethical leadership, namely the “ethical leadership measure (ELM).” Our results show that ELM is strongly and positively correlated with scales for authentic leadership, ethical leadership, idealized influence, and a recently-developed leadership virtues questionnaire (LVQ); and negatively correlated with laissez-faire leadership and passive management by exception. ELM is also found to be positively related to followers’ job satisfaction, affective commitment, trust in leader, organizational citizenship behavior, and moral identity, and negatively related to followers’ intention to quit.
Look Up, Look Around: is There Anything Different about Team-Level OCB in China?

Abstract:Ethical leadership has been widely identified as the key variable in enhancing team-level organizational citizenship behavior (team-level OCB) in western economic and business contexts. This is challenged by empirical evidence in China and findings of this study. Our study examined the relationship between ethical leadership, organizational ethical context (ethical culture and corporate ethical values) and team-level OCB. Team-level data has been collected from 57 functional teams in 57 firms operating in China. The findings suggest that although ethical leadership is positively associated with team-level OCB, ethical context positively moderates the relationship between ethical leadership and team-level OCB. The higher ethical context is found to be, the greater is the (positive) effects of ethical leadership on team-level OCB and the opposite holds true when ethical context is low. Key implications are discussed on the role of contextual ethics for team-level OCB, while managerial implications include how non-Chinese firms could improve team-level OCB in the Chinese business context.
Relative Leader-member Exchange and Unethical Pro-leader Behavior: A Cross-level Moderated Mediation

Abstract:Drawing upon social comparison theory and the social functional view of emotions, we developed and tested a cross-level model to examine how and when relative leader-member exchange (RLMX) may result in employees’ unethical pro-leader behavior (UPLB). Data was collected from a sample of 514 employees in 102 divisional teams in a large retail corporation. Results of the multilevel moderated mediation modeling showed that the experience of envy fully mediated the negative effect of RLMX on UPLB. Furthermore, the indirect relationship was moderated by team-level distributive justice climate. Specifically, employees with low RLMX standings were more likely to experience envy and subsequently engage in UPLB when the distributive justice climate is low. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

Abstract:Ethical leadership has been documented as a critical factor influencing employee behavior. This study aims to expand on previous research by investigating how ethical leadership cultivates healthy Chinese guanxi between employees and their supervisors and influences employee organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). We propose that two types of Chinese guanxi, favor‐seeking guanxi and rent‐seeking guanxi, may play a mediating role in the relationship between ethical leadership and OCB. Using survey data collected from Chinese employees (N = 502), regression and bootstrap analyses are used to test the proposed research model. The results suggest that ethical leadership not only directly promotes employee OCB performance, but also does so indirectly by facilitating favor‐seeking guanxi orientation and suppressing rent‐seeking guanxi orientation. The results provide a theoretical contribution to the study of ethical leadership and Chinese guanxi, and also extend our practical understanding of the role of ethical leadership in enhancing OCB effectively in the China context.

Abstract:Previous studies have used social learning theory to explain the influence of ethical leadership. This study continues the previous research by using social learning theory to explain the mediating effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between ethical leadership and employee voice. In addition, this study extends previous studies by introducing expectancy theory to explore whether self-impact also mediates the relationship between ethical leadership and employee voice. Ethical leadership, self-efficacy, self-impact, and employee voice were assessed using paired surveys among 59 supervisors and 295 subordinates employed at nine firms in the People's Republic of China. Using HLM and SEM analyses, the results revealed that ethical leadership was positively related to employee voice and that this relationship was partially mediated by both self-efficacy and self-impact.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the relationships among ethical leadership (EL), affective commitment (AC), work engagement (WE), and employees' creativity (EC). In total, 233 Chinese public sector employees completed the survey in three phases. We used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the data. The paper found positive relationships between EL and WE and with EL and EC. The results further revealed that AC partially mediates the EL-WE relationship, while both AC and WE fully mediate the relationship between EL and EC. Testing these relationships via a multiple-mediated approach significantly contributed to the existing research on leadership.

Abstract:This study empirically investigated the impact of ethical leadership on employee burnout, deviant behavior and task performance through two psychological mechanisms: (1) developing higher levels of employee trust in leaders and (2) demonstrating lower levels of surface acting toward their leaders. Our theoretical model was tested using data collected from employees of a pharmaceutical retail chain company. Analyses of multisource time-lagged data from 45 team leaders and 247 employees showed that employees’ trust in leaders and surface acting significantly mediated the relationships between ethical leadership and employee burnout, deviant behavior and task performance. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our findings for understanding how ethical leaders influence employees’ attitudes and behavior.

Abstract:Drawing on the existing research on green leadership, this paper first examines the concept and structure of executive green leadership and develops a preliminary scale to measure executive green leadership. The confirmatory factor analysis is adopted to verify and revise the scale. The results show that green leadership and green person are the two main structures of executive green leadership, and the scale developed in this paper is of good reliability and validity. After data analysis, this paper then explores the antecedents of executive green leadership. The results show that factors such as corporate executives' internal moral identity, conscientiousness, pro-environmental intention, command-based environmental regulation, market-based environmental regulation, and corporate green image have a significant positive correlation with executive green leadership, while their short-term orientation has a significant negative correlation with the green leadership. This paper defines the concept and structure of executive green leadership and develops the corresponding scale for measuring it, to improve scholars' and managers' understanding of executive green leadership.

Abstract:This study empirically examined the propositions that ethical leadership may affect individuals’ task performance through enhancing employee voice behavior. Our theoretical model was tested using data collected from employees and supervisors in a high-tech company located in South China. Analyses of multisource three-wave data from 37 team supervisors and 176 employees showed that team level ethical leadership and leader-leader exchange may significantly affect individuals’ task performance. Furthermore, it was also found that the relationship between ethical leadership and employee voice behavior was moderated by leader-leader exchange. Specifically, ethical leadership may significantly enhance employee voice behavior when leader-leader exchange is low. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:Purpose – Although there is growing research on the relationship between ethical leadership and subordinate work behaviors, limited research has examined the boundary conditions under which ethical leadership is more or less effective. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether subordinate perceptions of role clarity in their job role influence the relationship between ethical leadership and subordinate work behaviors. Drawing on both social exchange and social learning theories, the authors predict that in contexts where subordinates perceive low levels of role clarity, the relationship between ethical leadership behavior and subordinate helping and deviant behaviors will be weaker. Design/methodology/approach – In total, 239 employees in the Chinese public sector completed surveys across three separate time points. Confirmatory factor analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Findings – Analyses provided support for the hypothesized relationships. When subordinates perceived higher levels of role clarity the positive relationship between ethical leadership and helping behavior was stronger, and the negative relationship between ethical leadership and deviant behavior was stronger. Research limitations/implications – As with all research the findings of this study need to be viewed in light of its limitations. First, the use of data from a single set of respondents opens up the possibility of common method bias. Second, given the study used of a sample of public sector employees from one part of China, there would be value in future research examining whether the findings from the present study are generalizable to other industrial and cultural contexts. Practical implications – This research has a number of practical implications. Given that the authors found a significant positive relationship between ethical leadership and helping behavior, and a significant negative relationship between ethical leadership and deviant behavior, it is crucial for organizations to include ethical training as an essential part of leadership development programs. However, the findings also suggest at the same time as facilitating the development of ethical leadership behaviors amongst supervisory employees, it is important for organizations to also provide employees with clarity over what is expected of them in their jobs, and the means they should employ to facilitate goal achievement. Originality/value – This study responds to recent calls for more research to identify factors which may strengthen or mitigate the influence of ethical leadership in the workplace.

It was also found that the link between ethical leadership and employee OCB was sequentially mediated by perceived procedural justice and employee's organizational concern. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:The threefold purpose of this study is as follows: (1) to verify whether three leadership styles (servant, ethical, and participative) contribute to enhancing organizational trust and commitment, (2) to test the full and partial mediating roles of organizational trust and commitment in the relationships between the three leadership styles and organizational outcomes (in-role performance and managerial accountability), and (3) to probe indirect leadership impacts on performance and accountability outcomes. First, we employed exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to operationalize the variables and to confirm the latent constructs from the relevant survey questions. Second, to confirm the total direct and indirect effects, we employed a full structural equation model (SEM) to test the interrelationships among variables, and to assess the relative strength of each variable. The results of this study demonstrate that ethical and participative leadership behaviors in the Chinese public sector are positively and significantly associated with organizational trust and commitment. Based on a discussion of the main findings, various research and practical implications for public management theory and practice are provided.

Abstract:Following recent ethical scandals and accusations in business which make enterprises fall into decay or go bankrupt and lead to trust crisis of the whole society,there has been a surge in interest in the development of ethical leadership.Although much has been done about the constructs,antecedents and consequences of ethical leadership,there are still many questions relating to its effects on psychological and organizational processes.Focusing on team leaders,we draw on social learning theory and social exchange theory to explore the impacts of ethical leadership on team members.Based on social learning theory,ethical leadership influences followers＇ outcomes through psychological safety and ethical climate.However,a social exchange perspective on ethical leadership proposes that team leaders influence the ethical conducts of followers via job characteristics and leader-member exchange.Future research directions are discussed in the end.

Abstract:In the expanding field of ethical leadership research, little attention has been paid to the association between ethical leaders’ personal ethical characteristics (beyond personality) and perceived ethical leadership, and the potential influence of ethical leadership on followers’ personal ethical characteristics. In this study, we tested a theoretical model to examine leaders’ moral identity and moral attentiveness as antecedents of perceived ethical leadership, and follower moral identity and moral attentiveness as outcomes of ethical leadership. Based upon data from 89 leaders and 460 followers in China, collected at two points in time, we found that leaders’ moral identity and moral attentiveness (group level) are associated with follower’s perceptions of ethical leadership. Ethical leadership is, in turn, associated with followers’ moral identity and moral attentiveness (individual level). We found furthermore that ethical leadership mediates the effect of leaders’ moral identity and moral attentiveness on followers’ moral identity and moral attentiveness. We discuss theoretical contributions, practical implications, and future research.

Abstract:This study examines the mediating effects of cognitive and affective trust on the relationship between follower perceptions of transformational leadership behavior and their work outcomes. Using data obtained from 318 supervisor–subordinate dyads from a manufacturing organization located in mainland China, structural equation modeling results revealed that affective trust fully mediated the relationships between transformational leadership and the work outcomes of followers, including their affective organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), and job performance. In contrast, cognitive trust negatively mediated the relationship between transformational leadership and follower job performance, and had insignificant effects on their affective organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behaviors. These findings highlight the importance of affective trust as a mechanism which translates transformational leadership into positive work outcomes for the organization.
The Roles of Integrative Leadership in Enhancing Organizational Effectiveness in the Chinese Public Sector: A Research Note

Abstract:This research paper uses the social capital perspective to revisit the much-discussed and as yet intriguing research question: the role of leadership behaviors in generating positive organizational attitudes and behaviors within the Asian context. The main purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to verify whether three leadership styles (i.e., servant leadership, ethical leadership, and participative leadership) contribute to enhancing organizational trust and commitment, (2) to test the full and partial mediating roles of organizational trust and commitment in the relationship between the three leadership predictors and organizational outcomes (i.e., in-role performance and managerial accountability), and (3) to probe indirect leadership impacts on performance and accountability outcomes. Using the alumni database (for 10 years, from 2001 to 2010) of the department of public administration at Zhejiang University, we constructed a survey (2011) (all items are selfreported: first round: 362 participants; second round: 300 participants; third round: 252 participants; valid sample size: 239 participants) that measured public employees` perceptions and behaviors in public organizations such as regarding leadership, commitment, HR policies, perceived organizational state, OCB, job tension, and trust. We employed exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to operationalize the variables and confirm the latent constructs from the relevant survey questions. Second, to confirm the total direct and indirect effects, we employed a full structural equation model (SEM) (i.e., a measurement model with a path model) to test the interrelationships among variables and to assess the relative strength of each variable. The results of this study are interesting as they show that ethical and participative leadership behaviors are positively and significantly associated with organizational trust and commitment in the Chinese public sector. Based on a discussion of the main findings, various research and practical implications for public management theory and practice are provided.
