Abstract:The connections between Maxwell's equations and symplectic matrix are studied. First, we analyze the continuous-time Maxwell's differential equations in free space and verify its time evolution matrix (TEMA) is symplectic-unitary matrix for complex space or symplectic-orthogonal matrix for real space. Second, the spatial differential operators are discretized by pseudo-spectral (PS) approach with collocated grid and by finite-difference (FD) method with staggered grid. For the PS approach, the TEMA conserves symplectic-unitary property. For the FD method, the TEMA conserves symplectic-orthogonal property. Finally, symplectic integration scheme is used in the time direction. In particular, we find the symplectiness of the TEMA also can be conserved. The mathematical proofs presented are helpful for deep researching the symplectic PSTD approach and the symplectic FDTD method.

Abstract:We show that if Maxwell's equations are expressed in a form independent of specific units, at least three Galilean limits can be extracted. The electric and magnetic limits can be regarded as nonrelativistic limits because they are obtained using the condition $|\bf{v}| \ll c$ and restrictions on the magnitudes of the sources and fields. The third limit is called the instantaneous limit and is introduced by letting $c\to \infty$. The electric and instantaneous limits have the same form, but their interpretation is different because the instantaneous limit cannot be considered as a nonrelativistic limit. We emphasize the double role that the speed of light $c$ plays in Maxwell's equations.
Independence of Maxwell's equations: A Bäcklund-transformation view

Abstract:It is now widely accepted that the Maxwell equations of Electrodynamics constitute a self-consistent set of four independent partial differential equations. According to a certain school of thought, however, half of these equations - namely, those expressing the two Gauss' laws for the electric and the magnetic field - are redundant since they can be "derived" from the remaining two laws and the principle of conservation of charge. The status of the latter principle is thus elevated to a law of Nature more fundamental than, say, Coulomb's law. In this note we examine this line of reasoning and we propose an approach according to which the Maxwell equations may be viewed as a Backlund transformation relating fields and sources. The conservation of charge and the electromagnetic wave equations then simply express the integrability conditions of this transformation.

Do Maxwell's equations need revision? - A methodological note

Abstract:We propose a modification of Maxwell's macroscopic fundamental set of equations in vacuum in order to clarify Faraday's law of induction. Using this procedure, the Lorentz force is no longer separate from Maxwell's equations. The Lorentz transformations are shown to be related to the convective derivative, which is introduced in the electrodynamics of moving bodies. The new formulation is in complete agreement with the actual set of Maxwell's equations for bodies at rest, the only novel feature is a new kind of electromotive force. Heinrich Hertz was the first to propose a similar electrodynamic theory of moving bodies, although its interpretation was based on the existence of the so called "aether". Examining the problem of a moving circuit with this procedure, it is shown that a new force of induction should act on a circuit moving through an inhomogeneous vector potential field. This overlooked induction force is related to the Aharanov-Bohm effect, but can also be related to the classical electromagnetic field when an external magnetic field is acting on the system. Technological issues, such as the so called Marinov motor are also addressed.

Abstract:The electromagnetic theory is considered in the framework of the generally covariant approach, that is applied to the analysis of electromagnetism in noninertial coordinate and frame systems. The special-relat\-ivistic formulation of Maxwell's electrodynamics arises in the flat Minkowski spacetime when the general coordinate transformations are restricted to a class of transformations preserving the Minkowski line element. The particular attention is paid to the analysis of the electromagnetism in the noninertial rotating reference system. For the latter case, the general stationary solution of the Maxwell equations in the absence of the electric current is constructed in terms of the two scalar functions satisfying the Poisson and the biharmonic equations with an arbitrary charge density as a matter source. The classic problem of Schiff is critically revisited.

Abstract:The article presents a simple, rigorous approach to introduce electromagnetic theory derived from a new, fundamental form of Gausss law using only the basic spacetime transformation relations of special relativity. More advanced concepts of relativistic mechanics, such as the transformation of mass, momentum, and force, are not necessary in this development, resulting in a simple theory. The material fills an educational need to introduce the modern theory of relativity into the teaching of engineering electromagnetics. The approach is suitable for a senior (even a junior) undergraduate and an introductory graduate engineering class, depending on the level of depth and rigor.

Price Variations in a Stock Market With Many Agents

Abstract:Large variations in stock prices happen with sufficient frequency to raise doubts about existing models, which all fail to account for non-Gaussian statistics. We construct simple models of a stock market, and argue that the large variations may be due to a crowd effect, where agents imitate each other's behavior. The variations over different time scales can be related to each other in a systematic way, similar to the Levy stable distribution proposed by Mandelbrot to describe real market indices. In the simplest, least realistic case, exact results for the statistics of the variations are derived by mapping onto a model of diffusing and annihilating particles, which has been solved by quantum field theory methods. When the agents imitate each other and respond to recent market volatility, different scaling behavior is obtained. In this case the statistics of price variations is consistent with empirical observations. The interplay between ``rational'' traders whose behavior is derived from fundamental analysis of the stock, including dividends, and ``noise traders'', whose behavior is governed solely by studying the market dynamics, is investigated. When the relative number of rational traders is small, ``bubbles'' often occur, where the market price moves outside the range justified by fundamental market analysis. When the number of rational traders is larger, the market price is generally locked within the price range they define.

The relation between the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equation and the covariant Hamilton-Jacobi equation for Maxwell's electrodynamics

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to understand the relation between the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equation for Maxwell's electrodynamics, which is an equation with variational derivatives for a functional of field configurations, and the covariant (De Donder-Weyl) Hamilton-Jacobi equation, which is a partial derivative equation on a finite dimensional space of vector potentials and spacetime coordinates. We show that the procedure of spacetime splitting applied to the latter allows us to reproduce both the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equation and the Gauss law constraint in the Hamilton-Jacobi form without a recourse to the canonical Hamiltonian analysis. Our consideration may help to analyze the quasi-classical limit of the connection between the standard quantization in field theory based on the canonical Hamiltonian formalism with a preferred time dimension and the precanonical quantization that uses the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formulation where space and time dimensions treated equally.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new direct approach to solving Maxwell's equations in time domain. Completely different from the classic one, this approach is derived and analysed based on a strategy which is independent of the well-known Fourier (or Laplace) transformation and the corresponding inverse transformation. The analysis first decouples Maxwell's equations on the basis of a potential theory and then uses an operator-variation-of-constants formula (the Duhamel Principle) to achieve the expression of exact solutions of Maxwell's equations. We further illustrate the simplicity and multi-purpose applicability of the new approach in linear, homogeneous, isotropic and lossless (bounded or unbounded and source-free or source) medium (in rectangular, cylindrical or spherical coordinates). Moreover, we make a study on impulse electromagnetics. With this new approach, this paper bridges the gap between the time domain electromagnetics and the frequency domain electromagnetics.

Abstract:Using Maxwell's mental imagery of a tube of fluid motion of an imaginary fluid, we derive his equations $\operatorname{curl} \mathbf{E} = -\frac{\partial \mathbf{B}}{\partial t}$, $\operatorname{curl} \mathbf{H} = \frac{\partial \mathbf{D}}{\partial t} + \mathbf{j}$, $\operatorname{div} \mathbf{D} = \varrho$, $\operatorname{div} \mathbf{B} = 0$, which together with the constituting relations $\mathbf{D} = \varepsilon_0 \mathbf{E}$, $\mathbf{B} = \mu_0 \mathbf{H}$, form what we call today Maxwell's equations. Main tools are the divergence, curl and gradient integration theorems and a version of Poincare's lemma formulated in vector calculus notation. Remarks on the history of the development of electrodynamic theory, quotations and references to original and secondary literature complement the paper.

Abstract:The contemporary practice is to favor the use of the SI units for electric circuits and the Gaussian CGS system for electromagnetic field. A modification of the Gaussian system of units (the Physics and Technology System) is suggested. In the Physics and Technology System the units of measurement for electrical circuits coincide with SI units, and the equations for the electromagnetic field are almost the same form as in the Gaussian system. The XXIV CGMP (2011) Resolution "On the possible future revision of the International System of Units, the SI" provides a chance to initiate gradual introduction of the Physics and Technology System as a new modification of the SI.

Abstract:A suitable parameterization of space-time in terms of one complex and three quaternionic imaginary units allows Lorentz transformations to be implemented as multiplication by complex-quaternionic numbers rather than matrices. Maxwell's equations reduce to a single equation.

Abstract:We present a probabilistic quantum processor for qudits. The processor itself is represented by a fixed array of gates. The input of the processor consists of two registers. In the program register the set of instructions (program) is encoded. This program is applied to the data register. The processor can perform any operation on a single qudit of the dimension N with a certain probability. If the operation is unitary, the probability is in general 1/N^2, but for more restricted sets of operators the probability can be higher. In fact, this probability can be independent of the dimension of the qudit Hilbert space of the qudit under some conditions.

Abstract:This is the second of three papers I will present as an application of the Basic Unit System concept, a complex mathematical unit presented in The Basic Unit System concept and The Principle of Synergy. In this case this Bus concept is used as a powerful tool to obtain again the Lorentz Transformation Groups of equations, and then to present the emergent proposal that the fundamental is the magnetic field, and not the charge concept. Abstract:This work, that is devoted to the memory of Dr. Andrew Chubykalo and his legacy, is the improved version of the paper published in Annales de la Fondation Louis de Broglie journal. In this article, methods for solving the Maxwell equations are analyzed. First, a method based on the direct differentiation of Maxwell's equations and their reduction to the wave equation for an electric field is considered in detail. It is shown that this method cannot give a closed-form solution that does not contain integrals. The other method, which is most often used by scientists, is based on the introduction of auxiliary quantities such as electromagnetic potentials. But rewriting the Maxwell equations via potentials requires the introduction of an additional constraint - the gauge condition. Some analysis of the expressions for the electric field obtained in two gauges, Coulomb and Lorenz gauges, shows that, contrary to the generally accepted opinion that expressions for the electromagnetic field should be identical in any gauge, the final expressions for the electric field differ in different gauges. Consequently, the uniqueness of the solution of the Maxwell equations is absent.

Abstract:Beginning from the integral forms of the four physics laws, we derive Maxwell’s equations for a mechano-driven, slow, nonuniform moving speed media system based on Galilean space and time, thus presenting a new approach for solving the electromagnetic field problems in a moving system with acceleration. For the electromagnetism of macro-objects on Earth, we believe that the relativistic effect can be generally ignored. Different from the classical texts on electrodynamics, which assumes motion is a constant speed along a straight line in the inertial frame, our theory describes the electromagnetism of the media systems in the noninertial frame with acceleration and time-dependent volume, shape, and boundary. Most importantly, the expanded Maxwell’s equations are solved through mathematical means. Our objective is to study the dynamics of coupling among the mechano-electric-magnetic multifields. Lastly, the expansion of the boundary conditions at the nanoscale boundaries and the application of the Maxwell’s equations in a lumped circuit system are discussed.

Abstract:A connection between Maxwell's equations, Newton's laws, and the special theory of relativity is established with a derivation that begins with Newton's verbal enunciation of his first two laws. Derived equations are required to be covariant, and a simplicity criterion requires that the four-vector force on a charged particle be linearly related to the four-vector velocity. The connecting tensor has derivable symmetry properties and contains the electric and magnetic field vectors. The Lorentz force law emerges, and Maxwell's equations for free space emerge with the assumption that the tensor and its dual must both satisfy first order partial differential equations. The inhomogeneous extension yields a charge density and a current density as being the source of the field, and yields the law of conservation of charge. Newton's third law is reinterpreted as a reciprocity statement, which requires that the charge in the source term can be taken as the same physical entity as that of the test particle and that both can be assigned the same units. Requiring covariance under either spatial inversions or time reversals precludes magnetic charge being a source of electromagnetic fields that exert forces on electric charges.
