Validity of the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST-10) in inpatient substance abusers

Abstract:There is a need for brief valid instruments for the identification of patients with drug use disorders. Gavin et al.(1989) reported that the DAST accurately classified DSM-III drug abuse/dependent patients. We assessed the diagnostic validity of the DAST in a sample of inpatients from a substance abuse treatment center. DSM-IIIR diagnoses were generated independently by structured lay interview alone (SCID) and by research clinicians using clinical observation, toxicologic and other laboratory data, and interview of patients and collateral informants. Ninety patients (39 males) aged 33±8.5 years were evaluated. There was good concordance between the DSM-IIIR Current and Lifetime Substance Use Disorder diagnoses generated by non-clinicians (using the SCID) and those made by experienced clinicians using all available data.
