Abstract:Matters Arising in Nature on "Evidence for a single layer van der Waals multiferroic". The search for two dimensional multiferroic materials is an exciting yet challenging endeavor. Recently, Song reported the exciting discovery of type II multiferroic order in an antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiI2 single layer and concluded the ferroelectric (FE) polarization induced by a helical magnetic order1. Their finding was presented from all optical experimental evidence, based on the methods of second harmonic generation (SHG) and linear dichroism (LD). However, the all optical characterizations cannot serve as unanimous evidence of the FE existence, particularly in conjunction with magnetic orders in a single layer NiI2 multiferroic. We have designed and built a Magneto-Optical-Electric Joint-measurement Scanning Imaging system (MOEJSI) for identification of two-dimensional vdW multiferroic.

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional (2D) interlayer-sliding multiferroic materials, consisting of two nonferroelectric monolayer ferromagnetic (FM) layers with specific interlayer stacking and sliding, have garnered significant interest for their potential in expanding the range of 2D multiferroics. However, the low-dimensional nature of 2D multiferroic materials results in relatively weak magnetic and ferroelectric (FE) properties, posing challenges for traditional detection methods in characterizing these two order parameters. In this work, we study the optical fingerprints of 2D interlayer-sliding multiferroic materials. By utilizing an abstract bilayer model, we demonstrate that the four multiferroic states (P↑N↑, P↑N↓, P↓N↓, and P↓N↑) are interconnected via the horizontal mirror symmetry M̂z , time-reversal symmetry T̂ , and their combination symmetries M̂zT̂ . Subsequently, we analyze the tensor elements associated with the optical Kerr effect and second harmonic generation (SHG) effect in multiferroic states, revealing a strong correlation between both the Kerr effect and SHG effect and the multiferroic orders of 2D interlayer-sliding multiferroic materials, as well as the presence of distinct optical characteristics across different multiferroic states. Using VSe2 and MnBi2Te4 as two representative 2D interlayer-sliding multiferroic materials, we further validate the intricate correlations between the symmetries and optical properties. Abstract:Topologically protected magnetic states have a variety of potential applications in future spintronics owing to their nanoscale size (<100 nm) and unique dynamics. These fascinating states, however, usually are located at the interfaces or surfaces of ultrathin systems due to the short interaction range of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Here, magnetic topological states in a 40-unit cells (16 nm) SrRuO3 layer are successfully created via an interlayer exchange coupling mechanism and the interfacial DMI. By controlling the thickness of an antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic layer, interfacial ionic polarization, as well as the transformation between ferromagnetic and magnetic topological states, can be modulated. Using micromagnetic simulations, the formation and stability of robust magnetic skyrmions in SrRuO3 /BiFeO3 heterostructures are elucidated. Magnetic skyrmions in thick multiferroic heterostructures are promising for the development of topological electronics as well as rendering a practical approach to extend the interfacial topological phenomena to bulk via antiferromagnetic order.

Abstract:Abstract Multiferroic materials have been intensively pursued to achieve the mutual control of electric and magnetic properties. The breakthrough progress in 2D magnets and ferroelectrics encourages the exploration of low-dimensional multiferroics, which holds the promise of understanding inscrutable magnetoelectric coupling and inventing advanced spintronic devices. However, confirming ferroelectricity with optical techniques is challenging in 2D materials, particularly in conjunction with antiferromagnetic orders in single- and few-layer multiferroics. Here, we report the discovery of 2D vdW multiferroic with out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization in trilayer NiI 2 device, as revealed by scanning reflective magnetic circular dichroism microscopy and ferroelectric hysteresis loops. The evolution between ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases has been unambiguously observed. Moreover, the magnetoelectric interaction is directly probed by magnetic control of the multiferroic domain switching. This work opens up opportunities for exploring multiferroic orders and multiferroic physics at the limit of single or few atomic layers, and for creating advanced magnetoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Controlling ferroic orders (ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity) by optical methods is a significant challenge due to the large mismatch in energy scales between the order parameter coupling strengths and the incident photons. Here, we demonstrate an approach to manipulate multiple ferroic orders in an epitaxial mixed-phase BiFeO3 thin film at ambient temperature via laser illumination. Phase-field simulations indicate that a light-driven flexoelectric effect allows the targeted formation of ordered domains. We also achieved precise sequential laser writing and erasure of different domain patterns, which demonstrates a deterministic optical control of multiferroicity at room temperature. As ferroic orders directly influence susceptibility and conductivity in complex materials, our results not only shed light on the optical control of multiple functionalities, but also suggest possible developments for optoelectronics and related applications.
Layer thickness crossover of type-II multiferroic magnetism in NiI2

Abstract:The discovery of atomically thin van der Waals ferroelectric and magnetic materials encourages the exploration of 2D multiferroics, which holds the promise to understand fascinating magnetoelectric interactions and fabricate advanced spintronic devices. In addition to building a heterostructure consisting of ferroelectric and magnetic ingredients, thinning down layered multiferroics of spin origin such as NiI2 becomes a natural route to realize 2D multiferroicity. However, the layer-dependent behavior, widely known in the community of 2D materials, necessitates a rigorous scrutiny of the multiferroic order in the few-layer limit. Here, we interrogate the layer thickness crossover of helimagnetism in NiI2 that drives the ferroelectricity and thereby type-II multiferroicity. By using wavelength-dependent polarization-resolved optical second harmonic generation (SHG) to probe the ferroic symmetry, we find that the SHG arises from the inversion-symmetry-breaking magnetic order, not previously assumed ferroelectricity. This magnetism-induced SHG is only observed in bilayer or thicker layers, and vanishes in monolayer, suggesting the critical role of interlayer exchange interaction in breaking the degeneracy of geometrically frustrated spin structures in triangular lattice and stabilizing the type-II multiferroic magnetism in few-layers. While the helimagnetic transition temperature is layer dependent, the few-layer NiI2 exhibits another thickness evolution and reaches the bulk-like behavior in trilayer, indicated by the intermediate centrosymmetric antiferromagnetic state as revealed in Raman spectroscopy. Our work therefore highlights the magnetic contribution to SHG and Raman spectroscopy in reduced dimension and guides the optical study of 2D multiferroics.

Abstract:Applied Physics Letters, Volume 120, Issue 19, May 2022. Multiferroics, coupling magnetism with electric polarization, provides special opportunities for both fundamental research and device applications. The current multiferroic research in a two-dimensional lattice is invariably focused on d-orbital based systems. We alternatively show by first-principles calculations that ideal multiferroics is present in a p-orbital based lattice of single-layer SiN. Single-layer SiN is a semiconductor exhibiting intrinsic ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity simultaneously. Its magnetism correlates with the extended p–p interaction between unpaired p orbitals of N atoms. The buckled symmetry guarantees the existence of an out-of-plane electric dipole, giving rise to the ferroelectric order. More remarkably, the ferroic orders in single-layer SiN display strongly coupled physics, i.e., the spatial distribution of magnetic moments can be well controlled by the reversal of electric polarization, thereby establishing the long-sought multiferroics with strong magnetoelectric coupling. These findings not only enrich a two-dimensional multiferroic family, but also enable a wide range of device applications.

Abstract: The realization of multiferroics in nanostructures, combined with a large electric dipole and ferromagnetic ordering, could lead to new applications, such as high-density multi-state data storage. Although multiferroics have been broadly studied for decades, ferromagnetic ferroelectricity is rarely explored, especially in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Here we report the discovery of 2D ferromagnetic ferroelectricity in layered transition metal halide systems. On the basis of first-principles calculations, we reveal that charged CrBr3 monolayer exhibits in-plane multiferroicity, which is ensured by the combination of orbital and charge ordering as realized by the asymmetric Jahn-Teller distortions of octahedral Cr-Br6 units. As an example, we further show that (CrBr3)2Li is a ferromagnetic ferroelectric multiferroic. The explored phenomena and mechanism of multiferroics in this 2D system are not only useful for fundamental research in multiferroics but also enable a wide range of applications in nano-devices.
Toggling Valley-Spin Locking and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Single-Element Multiferroic Monolayers via Light

Abstract:Ferroicities in structural ferroic materials can effectively tune many different fascinating physical properties, leading to potential applications in the future. Usually, in order to break inversion symmetry in ferroelectrics, the material needs to be composed of multiple types of element. Here, we study a single element multiferroic material with time-reversal symmetry, monolayer Bi(110), which possesses multiple types of ferroic (ferroelectric and ferroelastic) order. By performing first-principles calculations combined with a group-theory analysis, we reveal that this multiferroic material exhibits various interesting properties, such as an out-of-plane persistent spin helix, valleytronics, and promising nonlinear optical properties, which depend on its orientation variant. We show further that under illumination with linearly polarized light, different orientation variants in the Bi(110) monolayer possess different free energies. Thus, one can use this noncontacting approach to control the thermodynamic stability of different types of order. The switching of the orientation variant is ultrafast and can occur in times on the order of picoseconds. During this process, no electron-hole pairs are generated. Therefore, one can eliminate waste heat during operation, ensuring good reversibility.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting multiferroics that can effectively couple magnetic and polarization (P) orders have great interest for both fundamental research and technological applications in nanoscale, which are, however, rare in nature. In this paper, we propose a general mechanism to realize semiconducting 2D multiferroics via van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction engineering, as demonstrated in a typical heterostructure consisting of magnetic bilayer CrI3(bi-CrI3) and ferroelectric monolayer In2Se3. Interestingly, the novel indirect orbital coupling between Se4p and Cr3d orbitals, intermediated by the interfacial I5p orbitals, is switchable in the opposite P configurations, resulting in an unexpected mechanism of strong asymmetrical magnetoelectric coupling. Therefore, along with the noticeable ferroelectric energy barrier induced by In2Se3, the realization of opposite magnetic orders in opposite P configurations can eventually result in the novel multiferroicity in bi-CrI3/In2Se3. Finally, we demonstrate that our mechanism can generally be applied to design other vdW multiferroics even with tunable layer thickness.

Abstract:Interfaces between complex oxides provide a unique opportunity to discover novel interfacial physics and functionalities. Here, we fabricate the multilayers of itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO3 (SRO) and multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) with atomically sharp interfaces. Atomically resolved transmission electron microscopy reveals that a large ionic displacement in BFO can penetrate into SRO layers near the BFO/SRO interfaces to a depth of 2-3 unit cells, indicating the ferroelectric proximity effect. A topological Hall effect is indicated by hump-like anomalies in the Hall measurements of the multilayer with a moderate thickness of the SRO layer. With magnetic measurements, it can be further confirmed that each SRO layer in the multilayers can be divided into interfacial and middle regions, which possess different magnetic ground states. Our work highlights the key role of functional heterointerfaces in exotic properties and provides an important guideline to design spintronic devices based on magnetic skyrmions.

Resolving Polarization Switching Pathways of Sliding Ferroelectricity in Trilayer 3R-MoS2

Abstract:Exploring the pathways of polarization switching in 2D sliding ferroelectrics with multiple internal interfaces is crucial for understanding the switching mechanism and for enhancing their performance in memory-related applications. However, distinguishing the rich configurations of various stacking from a coexistence of polarization domains has remained challenging. In this investigation, we employ optical techniques to resolve the stacking degeneracy in a trilayer 3R-MoS2 across several polarization switching cycles. Through a comprehensive analysis of the unique excitonic response exhibited by different layers, we unveil multiple polarization switching pathways that are determined by the sequential release of domain walls initially pinned at various interfaces within the trilayer, providing an understanding of the switching mechanism in multilayered sliding ferroelectrics. Our study not only reveals the intricate dynamics of polarization switching, but also underscores the crucial role of controlling domain walls, pinning centers, and doping levels, offering new insights for enhancing the applications of these materials in sensing and computing.

Abstract:Antiferromagnets have attracted significant attention in the field of magnonics, as promising candidates for ultralow-energy carriers for information transfer for future computing. The role of crystalline orientation distribution on magnon transport has received very little attention. In multiferroics such as BiFeO$_3$ the coupling between antiferromagnetic and polar order imposes yet another boundary condition on spin transport. Thus, understanding the fundamentals of spin transport in such systems requires a single domain, a single crystal. We show that through Lanthanum(La) substitution, a single ferroelectric domain can be engineered with a stable, single-variant spin cycloid, controllable by an electric field. The spin transport in such a single domain displays a strong anisotropy, arising from the underlying spin cycloid lattice. Our work shows a pathway to understand the fundamental origins of spin transport in such a single domain multiferroic.

Competing multiferroic phases in monolayer and few-layer NiI$_{2}$

Abstract:A recent experiment reported type-II multiferroicity in monolayer (ML) NiI$_{2}$ based on a presumed spiral magnetic configuration (Spiral-B), which is, as we found here, under debate in the ML limit. Freestanding ML NiI$_{2}$ breaks its C$_{3}$ symmetry, as it prefers a striped antiferromagnetic order (AABB-AFM) along with an intralayer antiferroelectric (AFE) order. However, substrate confinement may preserve the C$_{3}$ symmetry and/or apply tensile strain to the ML. This leads to another spiral magnetic order (Spiral-$IV^X$), while 2L shows a different order (Spiral-$V^Y$) and Spiral-B dominates in thicker layers. Thus, three multiferroic phases, namely, Spiral-B+FE, Spiral-$IV^X$ +FE, Spiral-$V^Y$+FE, and an anti-multiferroic AABB-AFM+AFE one, show layer-thickness-dependent and geometry-dependent dominance, ascribed to competitions among thickness-dependent Kitaev, biquadratic, and Heisenberg spin-exchange interactions and single-ion magnetic anisotropy. Our theoretical results clarify the debate on the multiferroicity of ML NiI$_{2}$ and shed light on the role of layer-stacking-induced changes in noncollinear spin-exchange interactions and magnetic anisotropy in thickness-dependent magnetism.

Unified Model for Spin Order Induced Polarization in Multiferroics

Abstract:Submitted for the MAR14 Meeting of The American Physical Society Unified model for spin order induced polarization in multiferroics HONGJUN XIANG, Fudan University — The microscopic origins of ferroelectricity in different multiferroic systems were theoretically investigated. We proposed a unified model [1,2] which includes purely electronic and ion-displacement contribution simultaneously to describe spin-order induced ferroelectricity. An efficient method [3] was developed to compute the model parameters from first-principles. On the basis of the unified model and density functional calculations, we explained the ferroelectricity induced by the proper-screw spin spiral [2], discovered a novel magnetoelectric coupling mechanism in which the magnitude of the polarization is governed by the exchange striction with the direction by the spin chirality [4], proposed that the ferroelectricity in the chiral-lattice magnet Cu2OSeO3 is due to the unusual single-spin site term [5], unraveled that the magnetoelectric effect observed in BiFeO3 originates from the exchange striction [2].
