Abstract:Over the last decades, theoretical perspectives in the interdisciplinary field of the affective sciences have proliferated rather than converged due to differing assumptions about what human affective phenomena are and how they work. These metaphysical and mechanistic assumptions, shaped by academic context and values, have dictated affective constructs and operationalizations. However, an assumption about the purpose of affective phenomena can guide us to a common set of metaphysical and mechanistic assumptions. In this capstone paper, we home in on a nested teleological principle for human affective phenomena in order to synthesize metaphysical and mechanistic assumptions. Under this framework, human affective phenomena can collectively be considered algorithms that either adjust based on the human comfort zone (affective concerns) or monitor those adaptive processes (affective features). This teleologically-grounded framework offers a principled agenda and launchpad for both organizing existing perspectives and generating new ones. Ultimately, we hope the Human Affectome brings us a step closer to not only an integrated understanding of human affective phenomena, but an integrated field for affective research.

Abstract:This is a commentary on Hinojosa, Moreno and Ferré (2019), Affective neurolinguistics: towards a framework for reconciling language and emotion (doi:10.1080/23273798.2019.1620957). In their review, the authors introduce into the field of affective neurolinguistics (ANL). The key questions of ANL are how emotions are conveyed by human language and what the neural signatures are. The way these questions are approached depends on the definitions of emotions. “Where are the emotions in written words?” is therefore a fundamental question ANL needs to answer. Neurophysiological studies delineated the neural correlates of emotional word processing. This consistently revealed two brain potentials, whose affective modulation is not specific for words. This commentary concentrates on these findings and discusses their relevance for understanding how the human brain adapts its evolutionary older neural machinery to the evolutionary younger ability of expressing emotions in terms of abstract symbols (written language) and to reactivate the one through the other.

Abstract:Thomas Scheff's "Cognitive and Emotional Conflict in Anorexia" is a fascinating example of what Scheff has described elsewhere (1987) and what Clifford Geertz (1973) (after Gilbert Ryle) has called "thick description." One of the advantages and challenges of this kind of intensive research with a single case or small number of cases is the opportunity to look in detail at a particular aspect of behavior and in that way develop a unique perspective. This kind of inquiry, at a less systematic level, is also closely related to the everyday practice of clinicians trying to understand a patient and carry out a therapeutic regimen.

Abstract:The commentary begins by briefly summarizing some of the key ideas of the target paper and locates them within the context of the theories of attachment and mentalization, emphasizing how the idea of mentalizing homeostasis adds to the richness of these theories, and counters some of their possible weaknesses by reaffirming the highly physical nature and imperatives of early relationships. The authors go on to discuss physical touch as a form of communication, and of meta-communication, and speculate that responsive physical interaction constitutes the infant’s first affirmation of their knowledge of the world as valid, and as such it indicates to the infant the value of opening epistemic trust with trusted caregivers.

Abstract:Affective computation generally focuses on the informatics of affect: structuring, formalizing, and representing emotion as informational units. We propose instead an enigmatics of affect, a critical technical practice that respects the rich and undefinable complexities of human affective experience. Our interactive installation, the Influencing Machine, allows users to explore a dynamic landscape of emotionally expressive sound and child-like drawings, using a tangible, intuitive input device that supports open-ended engagement. The Influencing Machine bridges the subjective experience of the user and the necessary objective rationality of the underlying code. It functions as a cultural probe, reflecting and challenging users to reflect on the cultural meaning of affective computation.

A Behavioral and Biological Analysis of Aesthetics: Implications for Research and Applications

Abstract:Seeking to identify the common and distinguishing attributes of effects one might call "aesthetic," I examined hundreds of examples in music, visual arts, poetry, literature, humor, performance arts, architecture, science, mathematics, games, and other disciplines. I observed that all involve quasi-emotional reactions to stimuli that are composites of multiple elements that ordinarily do not occur together and whose interaction, when appropriately potentiated, is transformative-different in kind from the effects of the separate constituent elements. Such effects, termed synergetic, can evoke surprise-tinged emotional responses. Aesthetic reactions, unlike many other kinds of emotional reactions, are never evoked by biologically urgent action-demanding events, such as threats or opportunities. The examined effects were created by various concept manipulation devices: class expansion, identification of new relations, repetition, symmetry, parsimony, and emotional displays for the audience to mirror (I identified a total of 16 such devices). The effects would occur only for individuals with the necessary priming, in circumstances that include effective potentiating factors. Synergetic stimuli that evoke aesthetic responses tend to be reinforcing, via mechanisms related to their biological utility during our evolution. I offer a theory as to how aesthetics may have evolved from its primordial pre-aesthetic roots, with examples of how consideration of those roots often explains aesthetic and related effects. The article suggests that aesthetic phenomena are a special case of a more pervasive aspect of behavior and proposes research approaches involving laboratory models and fMRI technology.

Abstract:Suzanne Retzinger's article, "A Theory of Mental Illness," provides further untangling of the complex links between social relationships and psychopathology. Those links have been demonstrated in such diverse areas as the impact of family relationships on relapse (e.g., Brown et al. 1972), the predictive importance of social relations to outcome (e.g., Strauss and Carpenter 1977), and the genetic connections between social relationship traits and vulnerability to psychopathology (Kendler et al. 1982). The research presented here focuses on social relationships with special emphasis on stigma in those relationships and its impact on disorder. It also has the valuable role of forging connections between the more abstract labeling theory and the actual behaviors of people as viewed in their interaction.

Abstract:The Human Affectome Project was launched by the non-profit organization Neuroqualia (www.neuroqualia.org) in 2015 with the seemingly impossible goal: To map a psychological process and form possible definitions and working models for affective states and related emotions. Twelve reviews based on emotions, feelings and motivation were written dedicated to mapping the brain basis of affect. A capstone piece 'The Human Affectome' provides a foundation for the special issue by giving detailed up-to-date definitions for key terms including feeling, affect, emotion and mood. Critically, the piece offers an overall model synthesizing three main features of affect: valence, motivation, and arousal. Affect itself is explored as the main umbrella function capturing all feeling states and related processes. Overall, the project and the special issue has been a highly successful interdisciplinary effort producing a novel approach that can be used to understand, guide and revise contemporary research on the brain basis of feeling and how diverse feeling states interact with each other in typical and atypical fashions.

Abstract:Starting from the expression and perception of basic emotions such as disgust and fear, Liuzza and colleagues propose a validated Italian version of the body odor disgust sensitivity scale -BODS, measuring individual differences in body odor disgust, a trait that plays an important role in understanding, for example, social behaviors.Next, Frumento and colleagues analyze which perceptual features make an animal more-or-less scary to phobic and non-phobic people. By allowing participants to modify the spider's perceptual features (hairiness, body/leg size, and locomotion) in real-time on a computerized interface, their research aims to advance our knowledge of phobic preferences and improve the acceptability of exposure therapies.Moving from individual to dual processing of emotions, Smekal et al. investigated the factors underlying naturalistic action recognition and understanding, as well as the errors occurring during recognition failures. In particular, they provide evidence on how form, motion, and temporal information differentially contribute to subjective action understanding in the context of naturalistic action perception.In the language domain, Del Maschio et al. provide evidence that stronger emotional resonance underpins the processing of words in the native language of bilingual individuals, pointing to the different sensitivity of the hemodynamic responses to emotional information depending on the selected language.Emotions also play a vital role at the social level, impacting various crucial aspects of work such as job satisfaction, performance, and employee well-being. In the mini-review from Boukarras et al., studies that have employed interpersonal (neuro)physiology to quantify the asymmetrical contagion of emotions in different contexts are examined. The review revealed that delayed synchronization of physiological states is a widespread phenomenon that may underpin the transmission of emotions, with implications for various aspects of organizational life, including leader-to-employee communication, and could drive the development of effective leadership training programs Understanding the neurobiology of reward processing is another important aspect of the realm of emotions. Two studies in this collection address this topic. First, Bertrand et al. provide evidence of a diffuse limbic territory sensitive to reward within the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in non-human primates (macaca fascicularis). Then, Kraus and colleagues move to humans and systematically summarize available experimental results that assessed the modulation of social reward processing by intranasal oxytocin (IN-OXY) administration.Finally, Sirgiovanni et al. investigate how complex social emotions such as shame and guilt differently impact the tendency to internalize the causality of negative events, attribute responsibility to themselves and others, and engage in responsible behavior. Findings indicate that guilt-prone people tend to attribute a higher degree of culpability to others, which is consistent with the view that guilt motivates people to choose the "moral paths in life".The overall collection is a timely project as the study of emotions is not just important but necessary due to the significance of emotions in well-being and cultural change, which requires emotional intelligence from everyone to better understand each other as humans.

Abstract:This theoretical paper explores the affect-logic approach to schizophrenia in light of the general complexity theories of cognition: embodied cognition, Haken’s synergetics, and Friston’s free energy principle. According to affect-logic, the mental apparatus is an embodied system open to its environment, driven by bioenergetic inputs of emotions. Emotions are rooted in goal-directed embodied states selected by evolutionary pressure for coping with specific situations such as fight, flight, attachment, and others. According to synergetics, nonlinear bifurcations and the emergence of new global patterns occur in open systems when control parameters reach a critical level. Applied to the emergence of psychotic states, synergetics and the proposed energetic understanding of emotions lead to the hypothesis that critical levels of emotional tension may be responsible for the transition from normal to psychotic modes of functioning in vulnerable individuals. In addition, the free energy principle through learning suggests that psychotic symptoms correspond to alternative modes of minimizing free energy, which then entails distorted perceptions of the body, self, and reality. This synthetic formulation has implications for novel therapeutic and preventive strategies in the treatment of psychoses, among these are milieu-therapeutic approaches of the Soteria type that focus on a sustained reduction of emotional tension and phenomenologically oriented methods for improving the perception of body, self, and reality.

Harzheim's critique highlights significant aspects of Fuchs' framework, including his critique of functionalist models, the impact of transhumanist technologies, and ethical concerns in healthcare technology. This paper extends Harzheim's review by proposing an integration of functionalist and embodied cognitive models, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive evaluation of technological impacts, and advocating for a more robust ethical framework that considers social equity. Additionally, it addresses the is-ought distinction and explores the implications of technological advancements on human identity and mental health. Doede's critique is also discussed, underscoring the importance of integrating diverse cognitive models and addressing technological determinism. Overall, this response calls for a more nuanced and inclusive approach to the discourse on embodied cognition, aiming to enrich the scholarly conversation and address the complexities and implications of Fuchs' analysis.

Abstract:Emotions are at the heart of how we understand the human mind and of our relationships within the social world. Yet, there is still no scientific consensus on the fundamental nature of emotion. A central quest within the discipline of affective science is to develop an in-depth understanding of emotions, moods, and feelings and how they are embodied within the brain (affective neuroscience). This article provides a brief overview of the scientific study of emotion with a particular emphasis on psychological and neuroscientific perspectives. Following a selective snapshot of past and present research in this field, some current challenges and controversies in affective science are highlighted.
A Plea for Scientific Ambitions: Reply to Commentaries from Martin Wieser, Nikolai Veresov, Asger Neumann, and Peter Krøjgaard

Abstract:The paper is a reply to commentaries to "Activity theories and the Ontology of Psychology: Learning from Danish and Russian Experiences" (Mammen and Mironenko 2015). At the same time it is an attempt to reply to more general issues raised by the commentators and an attempt to further develop some general ideas from our paper with a focus on the introduction of the new analytical concepts sense and choice categories. These concepts have been elaborated in an axiomatic frame in (Mammen 2016) and the present paper is thus also pointing forwards to that and supporting it with examples from research on adult human relations of love and affection and on infant cognitive development. A few examples from myth and literature are referred to also. The ambition is to introduce new analytical tools across schools and domains of psychology which open for theoretical inclusion of new phenomena and re-structuring of well-known ones. The hope is to surmount some problems, as e.g. the dilemma between dualism and reductionism, which have been obstacles in the search for conceptual and methodological coherence in psychology. In the first place the hope is also to sharpen the analytical, critical and practical potential of psychology as a science. The ambition is not, here and now, to develop a comprehensive general theory as a container for the huge amount of empirical results collected using very heterogeneous criteria for what belongs to the domain of psychology and very heterogeneous conceptual frames. Here we still need some patience following the lesson from natural science, step by step including new domains as the conceptual and practical frames are expanding, but on the other hand not excluding anything apriori.
These Aren't The Droids You Are Looking for: Promises and Challenges for the Intersection of Affective Science and Robotics/AI

Abstract:AI research focused on interactions with humans, particularly in the form of robots or virtual agents, has expanded in the last two decades to include concepts related to affective processes. Affective computing is an emerging field that deals with issues such as how the diagnosis of affective states of users can be used to improve such interactions, also with a view to demonstrate affective behavior towards the user. This type of research often is based on two beliefs: (1) artificial emotional intelligence will improve human computer interaction (or more specifically human robot interaction), and (2) we understand the role of affective behavior in human interaction sufficiently to tell artificial systems what to do. However, within affective science the focus of research is often to test a particular assumption, such as "smiles affect liking." Such focus does not provide the information necessary to synthesize affective behavior in long dynamic and real-time interactions. In consequence, theories do not play a large role in the development of artificial affective systems by engineers, but self-learning systems develop their behavior out of large corpora of recorded interactions. The status quo is characterized by measurement issues, theoretical lacunae regarding prevalence and functions of affective behavior in interaction, and underpowered studies that cannot provide the solid empirical foundation for further theoretical developments. This contribution will highlight some of these challenges and point towards next steps to create a rapprochement between engineers and affective scientists with a view to improving theory and solid applications.
