Abstract:We prove a Morrey-type theorem for Hamiltonian stationary submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$. Namely, if $L$ $\subset$ $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ is a $C^{1}$ Lagrangian submanifold with weakly harmonic Lagrangian phase $\theta,$ then $L$ must be smooth. In the process we also discuss a local version of the equation, which is a nonlinear fourth order double divergence equation of the potential function whose gradient graph defines the Hamiltonian stationary submanifolds locally, and we establish full regularity and removability of singular sets of capacity zero for weak solutions with $C^{1,1}$ norm below a dimensional constant.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that any C 1 -regular Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifold in a symplectic manifold is smooth. More broadly, we develop a regularity theory for a class of fourth order nonlinear elliptic equations with two distributional derivatives. Our fourth order regularity theory originates in the geometrically motivated variational problem for the volume functional, but should have applications beyond.

Abstract:In this article we shall provide a survey on our recent works ([M-O1], [M-O2]) and their environs on differential geometry of Lagrangian submanifolds in specific symplectic Kahler manifolds, such as complex projective spaces, complex space forms, Hermitian symmetric spaces and Kahler C-spaces. We shall discuss (1) Hamiltonian minimality and Hamiltonian stability of Lagrangian submanifolds in Hamiltonian volume minimizing problem, (2) classification problem of homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds from the viewpoint of Lagrangian orbits and moment maps, (3) tightness problem of Lagrangian submanifolds. Moreover we shall give attention to Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics, which are compact Hermitian symmetric spaces of rank 2. The relationship between certain minimal Lagrangian submanifold in complex hyperquadrics and isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres will be emphasized. Recently we gave a complete classification of compact homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics and we determined the Hamiltonian stability of ALL compact minimal Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in complex hyperquadrics which are obtained as the Gauss images of homogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres.

Abstract:We prove a bubble tree convergence theorem for a sequence of closed Hamiltonian Stationary Lagrangian surfaces with bounded areas and Willmore energies in a complete K{\"a}hler surface. We also prove two strong compactness theorems on the space of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian tori in $\mathbb C^2$ and $\mathbb{CP}^2$ respectively.

Abstract:The n-dimensional complex hyperquadric is a compact complex algebraic hypersurface defined by the quadratic equation in the (n+1)-dimensional complex projective space, which is isometric to the real Grassmannmanifold of oriented 2-planes and is a compact Hermitian symmetric space of rank 2. In this paper, we study geometry of compact Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics from the viewpoint of the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres. From this viewpoint we provide a classification theorem of compact homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics by using the moment map technique. Moreover we determine the Hamiltonian stability of compact minimal Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in complex hyperquadrics which are obtained as Gauss images of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with g(= 1, 2, 3) distinct principal curvatures.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a geometric flow for Lagrangian submanifolds in a Kähler manifold that stays in its initial Hamiltonian isotopy class and is a gradient flow for volume. The stationary solutions are the Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds. The flow is not strictly parabolic but it corresponds to a fourth order strictly parabolic scalar equation in the cotangent bundle of the submanifold via Weinstein's Lagrangian neighborhood theorem. For any compact initial Lagrangian immersion, we establish short-time existence, uniqueness, and higher order estimates when the second fundamental forms are uniformly bounded up to time $T$.

Abstract:We study collections of exact Lagrangian submanifolds respecting some uniform Riemannian bounds, which we equip with a metric naturally arising in symplectic topology (e.g. the Lagrangian Hofer metric or the spectral metric). We exhibit many metric and symplectic properties of these spaces, such that they have compact completions and that they contain only finitely many Hamiltonian isotopy classes. We then use this to exclude many unusual phenomena from happening in these bounded spaces. Taking limits in the bounds, we also conclude that there are at most countably many Hamiltonian isotopy classes of exact Lagrangian submanifolds in a Liouville manifold. Under some mild topological assumptions, we get analogous results for monotone Lagrangian submanifolds with a fixed monotonicity constant. Finally, in the process of showing these results, we get new results on the Riemannian geometry of cotangent bundles and surfaces which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:In the context of the Hamiltonian formulation of string theory, a widely acknowledged issue is the inability of the first-class constraints to accurately reproduce the Lagrangian symmetry transformations. We take a critical look at the Hamiltonian formulation of the Polyakov string and demonstrate, using Castellani's procedure, that diffeomorphism and Weyl symmetries naturally emerge without using any field-dependent reparametrization, thus preserving the theoretical consistency between Hamiltonian and Lagrangian descriptions. Additionally, we will review the standard Hamiltonian analysis of the symmetries in terms of lapse and shift functions and show that the reason behind this failure is not due to the non-canonicity of the variables but rather because this parametrization fails to preserve general covariance.

Abstract:We describe a symplectic approach to thermodynamics in which thermodynamic transformations are described by Hamiltonian dynamics on thermodynamic spaces. By identifying the spaces of equilibrium states with Lagrangian submanifolds of a symplectic manifold, we construct a Hamiltonian description of thermodynamic processes where the space of equilibrium states of a system in a certain ensemble is the level set on which the Hamiltonian takes a constant value. In particular, we work out two explicit examples involving the ideal gas. Finally, we describe a Hamiltonian approach towards constructing maps between related thermodynamic systems, e.g., the ideal (non-interacting) gas and interacting gases.

Abstract:A Lagrangian field on a symplectic manifold $M$ is a family $\Lambda=\{\Lambda_x|x \in M\}$ of pointed Lagrangian submanifolds of $M$. This notion is a generalization of a real Lagrangian polarization for which each $\Lambda_x$ is the leaf containing $x$. Two Lagrangian fields $\Lambda$ and $\tilde \Lambda$ are called transversal if $\Lambda_x$ intersects $\tilde\Lambda_x$ transversally at $x$ for every $x$. Two transversal Lagrangian fields determine an almost para-Kähler structure on $M$. We construct a local symplectic groupoid on a neighborhood of the zero section of $T^\ast M$ from two transversal Lagrangian fields on $M$. The Lagrangian manifold of $n$-cycles of this groupoid in $(T^\ast M)^n$ has a generating function whose germ around the diagonal of $M^n$ is given by the $n$-point cyclic Calabi function of a closed (1,1)-form on a neighborhood of the diagonal of $M^2$ obtained from the symplectic form on $M$.

Abstract:Using Legendrian immersions and, in particular, Legendre curves in odd-dimensional spheres and anti-de Sitter spaces, we construct new examples of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in complex projective and hyperbolic spaces, including explicit one-parameter families of embeddings of quotients of certain product manifolds. We also give new examples of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in complex projective and hyperbolic spaces. Making use of all these constructions, we get Hamiltonian-minimal and special Lagrangian cones in complex Euclidean space as well.

Abstract:Consider a compact symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ with a Hamiltionan circle action. Then there are at least $n+1$ fixed points. Motivated by recent works on the case that the fixed point set consists of precisely $n+1$ isolated points, this paper studies a Hamiltonian $S^1$ action on a $10$-dimensional compact symplectic manifold with exactly 6 isolated fixed points. We study the relations of the following data: the first Chern class of the manifold,the largest weight of the action, all the weights of the action, the total Chern class of the manifold, and the integral cohomology ring of the manifold. We show the similarities of these data with those of a coadjoint orbit of the exceptional Lie group $G_2$, equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a subcircle of the maximal torus.
