Abstract:In this article we shall provide a survey on our recent works ([M-O1], [M-O2]) and their environs on differential geometry of Lagrangian submanifolds in specific symplectic Kahler manifolds, such as complex projective spaces, complex space forms, Hermitian symmetric spaces and Kahler C-spaces. We shall discuss (1) Hamiltonian minimality and Hamiltonian stability of Lagrangian submanifolds in Hamiltonian volume minimizing problem, (2) classification problem of homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds from the viewpoint of Lagrangian orbits and moment maps, (3) tightness problem of Lagrangian submanifolds. Moreover we shall give attention to Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics, which are compact Hermitian symmetric spaces of rank 2. The relationship between certain minimal Lagrangian submanifold in complex hyperquadrics and isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres will be emphasized. Recently we gave a complete classification of compact homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics and we determined the Hamiltonian stability of ALL compact minimal Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in complex hyperquadrics which are obtained as the Gauss images of homogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres.

Abstract:Using Legendrian immersions and, in particular, Legendre curves in odd-dimensional spheres and anti-de Sitter spaces, we construct new examples of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in complex projective and hyperbolic spaces, including explicit one-parameter families of embeddings of quotients of certain product manifolds. We also give new examples of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in complex projective and hyperbolic spaces. Making use of all these constructions, we get Hamiltonian-minimal and special Lagrangian cones in complex Euclidean space as well.

Abstract:The n-dimensional complex hyperquadric is a compact complex algebraic hypersurface defined by the quadratic equation in the (n+1)-dimensional complex projective space, which is isometric to the real Grassmannmanifold of oriented 2-planes and is a compact Hermitian symmetric space of rank 2. In this paper, we study geometry of compact Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics from the viewpoint of the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres. From this viewpoint we provide a classification theorem of compact homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics by using the moment map technique. Moreover we determine the Hamiltonian stability of compact minimal Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in complex hyperquadrics which are obtained as Gauss images of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with g(= 1, 2, 3) distinct principal curvatures.

Abstract:We study lagrangian submanifolds of algebraic variety Gr(1, n) equipped with the Kahler form given by the Plucker embedding. We use the correspondence between lagrangian submanifolds of Gr(1, n) and lagrangian submanifolds of variety M_{n-k}, given by symplectic reduction Gr(1, n)//T^k for some specially chosen moment maps, which generate T^k action on Gr(1, n). We establish that in this way one finds many topological types, realized by lagrangian submanifolds, and then one counts that Gr(1, n) admits more than n different topological types of smooth lagrangian submanifolds.

Abstract:We introduce a structural approach to study Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric in arbitrary dimension by using its family of non-integrable almost product structures.In particular,we define local angle functions encoding the geometry of the Lagrangian submanifold at hand.We prove that these functions are constant in the special case that the Lagrangian immersion is the Gauss map of an isoparametric hypersurface of a sphere and give the relation with the constant principal curvatures of the hypersurface.We also use our techniques to classify all minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric which have constant sectional curvatures and all minimal Lagrangian submanifolds for which all local angle functions,respectively all but one,coincide.
Characterizing subadjoint varieties among Legendrian varieties

Abstract:For a symplectic vector space $V$, a projective subvariety $Z \subset {\bf P} V$ is a Legendrian variety if its affine cone $\widehat{Z} \subset V$ is Lagrangian. In addition to the classical examples of subadjoint varieties associated to simple Lie algebras, many examples of nonsingular Legendrian varieties have been discovered which have positive-dimensional automorphism groups. We give a characterization of subadjoint varieties among such Legendrian varieties in terms of the isotropy representation. Our proof uses some special features of the projective third fundamental forms of Legendrian varieties and their relation to the lines on the Legendrian varieties.

Abstract:From the Riemannian geometric point of view, one of the most fundamental problems in the study of Lagrangian submanifolds is the classiflcation of Lagrangian submanifolds with parallel second fundamental form. In 1980’s, H. Naitoh completely classifled the Lagrangian submanifolds with parallel second fundamental form and without Euclidean factor in complex projective space, by using the theory of Lie groups and symmetric spaces. He showed that such a submanifold is always locally symmetric and is one of the symmetric spaces: SO(k + 1)=SO(k)(k ‚ 2), SU(k)=SO(k)(k ‚ 3), SU(k)(k ‚ 3), SU(2k)=Sp(k)(k ‚ 3), E6=F4. In this paper, we completely classify the Lagrangian submanifolds in complex projective space with parallel second fundamental form by an elementary geometrical method. We prove that such a Lagrangian submanifold is either totally geodesic or the Calabi product of a point with a lower dimensional Lagrangian submanifold with parallel second fundamental form, or the Calabi product of two lower dimensional Lagrangian submanifolds with parallel second fundamental form, or one of the standard symmetric spaces: SU(k)=SO(k)(k ‚ 3), SU(k)(k ‚ 3), SU(2k)=Sp(k)(k ‚ 3), E6=F4. Abstract:A Lagrangian field on a symplectic manifold $M$ is a family $\Lambda=\{\Lambda_x|x \in M\}$ of pointed Lagrangian submanifolds of $M$. This notion is a generalization of a real Lagrangian polarization for which each $\Lambda_x$ is the leaf containing $x$. Two Lagrangian fields $\Lambda$ and $\tilde \Lambda$ are called transversal if $\Lambda_x$ intersects $\tilde\Lambda_x$ transversally at $x$ for every $x$. Two transversal Lagrangian fields determine an almost para-Kähler structure on $M$. We construct a local symplectic groupoid on a neighborhood of the zero section of $T^\ast M$ from two transversal Lagrangian fields on $M$. The Lagrangian manifold of $n$-cycles of this groupoid in $(T^\ast M)^n$ has a generating function whose germ around the diagonal of $M^n$ is given by the $n$-point cyclic Calabi function of a closed (1,1)-form on a neighborhood of the diagonal of $M^2$ obtained from the symplectic form on $M$.

Construction of special Lagrangian submanifolds of the Taub-NUT manifold and the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold

Abstract:We construct special Lagrangian submanifolds of the Taub-NUT manifold and the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold by combining the generalized Legendre transform approach and the moment map technique. The generalized Legendre transform approach provides a formulation to construct hyperkähler manifolds and can make their Calabi-Yau structures manifest. In this approach, the Kähler $2$-forms and the holomorphic volume forms can be written in terms of holomorphic coordinates, which are convenient to employ the moment map technique. This technique derives the condition that a submanifold in the Calabi-Yau manifold is special Lagrangian. For the Taub-NUT manifold and the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold, by the moment map technique, special Lagrangian submanifolds are obtained as a one-parameter family of the orbits corresponding to Hamiltonian action with respect to their Kähler 2-forms. The resultant special Lagrangian submanifolds have cohomogeneity-one symmetry. To demonstrate that our method is useful, we recover the conditions for the special Lagrangian submanifold of the Taub-NUT manifold which is invariant under the tri-holomorphic $U(1)$ symmetry. As new applications of our method, we construct special Lagrangian submanifolds of the Taub-NUT manifold and the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold which are invariant under the action of a Lie subgroup of $SO(3)$. In these constructions, our conditions for being special Lagrangian are expressed by ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with respect to the one-parameters. We numerically give solution curves for the ODEs which specify the special Lagrangian submanifolds for the above cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Lagrangian submanifolds of the pseudo‐nearly Kähler SL(2,R)×SL(2,R) . First, we show that they split into four different classes depending on their behavior with respect to a certain almost product structure on the ambient space. Then, we give a complete classification of totally geodesic Lagrangian submanifolds of this space.

Abstract:We make a conjecture about mean curvature flow of Lagrangian submanifolds of Calabi-Yau manifolds, expanding on that of [Th]. We give new results about the stability condition, and propose a Jordan-Hölder-type decomposition of (special) Lagrangians. The main results are the uniqueness of special Lagrangians in hamiltonian deformation classes of Lagrangians, under mild conditions, and a proof of the conjecture in some cases with symmetry: mean curvature flow converging to Shapere-Vafa's examples of SLags.

Abstract:Abstract A symplectic bundle over an algebraic curve has a natural invariant s Lag determined by the maximal degree of its Lagrangian subbundles. This can be viewed as a generalization of the classical Segre invariants of a vector bundle. We give a sharp upper bound on s Lag which is analogous to the Hirschowitz bound on the classical Segre invariants. Furthermore, we study the stratifications induced by s Lag on moduli spaces of symplectic bundles, and get a full picture for the case of rank four.

Abstract:Let $(X,\alpha)$ be a Kahler manifold of dimension n, and let $[\omega] \in H^{1,1}(X,\mathbb{R})$. We study the problem of specifying the Lagrangian phase of $\omega$ with respect to $\alpha$, which is described by the nonlinear elliptic equation \[ \sum_{i=1}^{n} \arctan(\lambda_i)= h(x) \] where $\lambda_i$ are the eigenvalues of $\omega$ with respect to $\alpha$. When $h(x)$ is a topological constant, this equation corresponds to the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills (dHYM) equation, and is related by Mirror Symmetry to the existence of special Lagrangian submanifolds of the mirror. We introduce a notion of subsolution for this equation, and prove a priori $C^{2,\beta}$ estimates when $|h|>(n-2)\frac{\pi}{2}$ and a subsolution exists. Using the method of continuity we show that the dHYM equation admits a smooth solution in the supercritical phase case, whenever a subsolution exists. Finally, we discover some stability-type cohomological obstructions to the existence of solutions to the dHYM equation and we conjecture that when these obstructions vanish the dHYM equation admits a solution. We confirm this conjecture for complex surfaces.

Abstract:We consider the pseudo-nearly Kähler $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\times\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and we study its Lagrangian submanifolds. We provide examples of Lagrangian submanifolds which do not have an analogue in $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{S}^3$. We also provide an expression for the isometry group of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\times\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ with the pseudo-Riemannian nearly Kähler metric. The main result is a complete classification of extrinsically homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds in this space.

Abstract:The Riemannian product of two hyperbolic planes of constant Gaussian curvature -1 has a natural Kähler structure. In fact, it can be identified with the complex hyperbolic quadric of complex dimension two. In this paper we study Lagrangian surfaces in this manifold. We present several examples and classify the totally umbilical and totally geodesic Lagrangian surfaces, the Lagrangian surfaces with parallel second fundamental form, the minimal Lagrangian surfaces with constant Gaussian curvature and the complete minimal Lagrangian surfaces satisfying a bounding condition on an important function that can be defined on any Lagrangian surface in this particular ambient space.

Abstract:Generalized complex (GC) geometry interpolates between ordinary symplectic and complex geometry. Stable generalized complex manifolds (first introduced by Cavalcanti, Gualtieri in 2015) carry a Poisson structure which is generically symplectic, but degenerates on a (real) codimension-2 submanifold. Up to gauge equivalence, the stable generalized complex structure is thus determined by what is called an elliptic symplectic form, which allows the extension of a number of techniques and results from symplectic geometry to stable GC geometry. This paper introduces a new type of submanifold in stable GC manifolds: Lagrangian branes with boundary, which are generically Lagrangian and intersect the degeneracy locus in their boundary. By relating stable GC manifolds to log symplectic manifolds, we are able to prove results on local neighbourhoods and small deformations of such branes. We further investigate stable generalized complex Lefschetz fibrations, where Lagrangian branes with boundary arise as Lefschetz thimbles. These objects are thus expected to be part of a Fukaya category for stable GC manifolds, which we hope to develop in future work and which would allow the application of Floer theory techniques to a larger class of manifolds.
Lagrangian metric geometry with Riemannian bounds

Abstract:We study collections of exact Lagrangian submanifolds respecting some uniform Riemannian bounds, which we equip with a metric naturally arising in symplectic topology (e.g. the Lagrangian Hofer metric or the spectral metric). We exhibit many metric and symplectic properties of these spaces, such that they have compact completions and that they contain only finitely many Hamiltonian isotopy classes. We then use this to exclude many unusual phenomena from happening in these bounded spaces. Taking limits in the bounds, we also conclude that there are at most countably many Hamiltonian isotopy classes of exact Lagrangian submanifolds in a Liouville manifold. Under some mild topological assumptions, we get analogous results for monotone Lagrangian submanifolds with a fixed monotonicity constant. Finally, in the process of showing these results, we get new results on the Riemannian geometry of cotangent bundles and surfaces which might be of independent interest.
