Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Abstract:Given a closed, orientable Lagrangian submanifold $L$ in a symplectic manifold $(X, \omega)$, we show that if $L$ is relatively exact then any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism preserving $L$ setwise must preserve its orientation. In contrast to previous results in this direction, there are no spin hypotheses on $L$. Curiously, the proof uses only mod-2 coefficients in its singular and Floer cohomology rings.

Abstract:Motivated by a problem of Hirzebruch, we study $8$-dimensional, closed, symplectic manifolds having a Hamiltonian torus action with isolated fixed points and second Betti number equal to $1$. Such manifolds are automatically positive monotone. Our main result concerns those endowed with a Hamiltonian $T^2$-action and fourth Betti number equal to $2$. We classify their isotropy data, (equivariant) cohomology rings and (equivariant) Chern classes, and prove that they agree with those of certain explicit Fano $4$-folds with torus actions. Moreover, under more general assumptions, we prove several finiteness results concerning Betti and Chern numbers of $8$-dimensional, positive monotone symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian torus action.

Abstract:Consider a compact symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ with a Hamiltionan circle action. Then there are at least $n+1$ fixed points. Motivated by recent works on the case that the fixed point set consists of precisely $n+1$ isolated points, this paper studies a Hamiltonian $S^1$ action on a $10$-dimensional compact symplectic manifold with exactly 6 isolated fixed points. We study the relations of the following data: the first Chern class of the manifold,the largest weight of the action, all the weights of the action, the total Chern class of the manifold, and the integral cohomology ring of the manifold. We show the similarities of these data with those of a coadjoint orbit of the exceptional Lie group $G_2$, equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a subcircle of the maximal torus.

Abstract:For any compact connected Lie group $G$, we study the Hamiltonian sum of two compact Hamiltonian group $G$-manifolds $(X^+,\omega^+,\mu^+)$ and $(X^-,\omega^-,\mu^-)$ with a common codimension 2 Hamiltonian submanifold $Z$ of the opposite equivariant Euler classes of the normal bundles. We establish that the symplectic reduction of the Hamiltonian sum agrees with the symplectic sum of the reduced symplectic manifolds. We also compare the equivariant first Chern class of the Hamiltonian sum with the equivariant first Chern classes of $X^\pm$.

Abstract:We describe a symplectic approach to thermodynamics in which thermodynamic transformations are described by Hamiltonian dynamics on thermodynamic spaces. By identifying the spaces of equilibrium states with Lagrangian submanifolds of a symplectic manifold, we construct a Hamiltonian description of thermodynamic processes where the space of equilibrium states of a system in a certain ensemble is the level set on which the Hamiltonian takes a constant value. In particular, we work out two explicit examples involving the ideal gas. Finally, we describe a Hamiltonian approach towards constructing maps between related thermodynamic systems, e.g., the ideal (non-interacting) gas and interacting gases.

Abstract:Given a pair of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-harmonic spinors (resp. 1-forms) on closed Riemannian 3-manifolds $(Y_1, g_1)$ and $(Y_2,g_2)$, we construct $\mathbb{Z}_2$-harmonic spinors (resp. 1-forms) on the connected sum $Y_1 \# Y_2$ and the torus sum $Y_1 \cup_{T^2} Y_2$ using a gluing argument. The main tool in the proof is a parameterized version of the Nash-Moser implicit function theorem established by Donaldson and the second author. We use these results to construct an abundance of new examples of $\mathbb Z_2$-harmonic spinors and 1-forms. In particular, we prove that for every closed 3-manifold $Y$, there exist infinitely many $\mathbb{Z}_2$-harmonic spinors with singular sets representing infinitely many distinct isotopy classes of embedded links, strengthening an existence theorem of Doan-Walpuski. Moreover, combining this with previous results, our construction implies that if $b_1(Y) > 0$, there exist infinitely many $\mathrm{spin}^c$ structures on $Y$ such that the moduli space of solutions to the two-spinor Seiberg-Witten equations is non-empty and non-compact.

Abstract:Abstract For the constraint variety in symplectic manifold, the solvable Hamiltonian vector fields on the constraint are investigated. According to P.A.M. Dirac [3], the space of solvable Hamiltonian systems is determined by the geometric restriction of the symplectic form to the constraint. Solvability condition of the generalized Hamiltonian systems is extended to singular varieties and applied under some assumption on singularities. The constraint being a smooth submanifold in a symplectic space was considered in [6]. In this paper, we investigate the solvability of generalized Hamiltonian systems and the constraint invariants on singular constraints in the constant rank case.

The proof is based on the theory of exponentially dichotomous linear systems and an improved KAM machinery adapted for the perturbations of angle dependent unperturbed parts.

Abstract:We prove a Morrey-type theorem for Hamiltonian stationary submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$. Namely, if $L$ $\subset$ $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ is a $C^{1}$ Lagrangian submanifold with weakly harmonic Lagrangian phase $\theta,$ then $L$ must be smooth. In the process we also discuss a local version of the equation, which is a nonlinear fourth order double divergence equation of the potential function whose gradient graph defines the Hamiltonian stationary submanifolds locally, and we establish full regularity and removability of singular sets of capacity zero for weak solutions with $C^{1,1}$ norm below a dimensional constant.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates sufficient conditions for the existence of a positive measure set of invariant KAM tori in a singly thermostated, 1 degree-of-freedom hamiltonian vector field. This result is applied to 4 important single thermostats in the literature and it is shown that in each case, if the hamiltonian is real-analytic and well-behaved, then the thermostated system always has a positive measure set of invariant KAM tori for sufficiently weak coupling and high temperature. This extends results of Legoll, Luskin & Moeckel.

Abstract:Consider the Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group on a transversely symplectic foliation which satisfies the transverse hard Lefschetz property. We establish an equivariant formality theorem and an equivariant symplectic d delta-lemma in this setting. As an application, we show that if the foliation is also Riemannian, then there exists a natural formal Frobenius manifold structure on the equivariant basic cohomology of the foliation.

Abstract:A theory of partial separability for classical Hamiltonian systems is proposed in the context of Haantjes geometry. As a general result, we show that the knowledge of a non-semisimple symplectic-Haantjes manifold for a given Hamiltonian system is sufficient to construct sets of coordinates (called Darboux-Haantjes coordinates) which allow both the partial separability of the associated Hamilton-Jacobi equations and the block-diagonalization of the operators of the corresponding Haantjes algebra. We also introduce a novel class of Hamiltonian systems, characterized by the existence of a generalized Stäckel matrix, which by construction are partially separable. They widely generalize the known families of partially separable Hamiltonian systems. Our systems can be described in terms of semisimple but non-maximal-rank symplectic-Haantjes manifolds.

Abstract:A classical theorem of Frankel for compact Kähler manifolds states that a Kähler S1-action is Hamiltonian if and only if it has fixed points. We prove a metatheorem which says that when the Hodge theory holds on non-compact manifolds, Frankel’s theorem still holds. Finally, we present several concrete situations in which the assumptions of the metatheorem hold.

Abstract:Under certain topological assumptions, we show that two monotone Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in the standard symplectic vector space with the same monotonicity constant cannot link one another and that, individually, their smooth knot type is determined entirely by the homotopy theoretic data which classifies the underlying Lagrangian immersion. The topological assumptions are satisfied by a large class of manifolds which are realised as monotone Lagrangians, including tori. After some additional homotopy theoretic calculations, we deduce that all monotone Lagrangian tori in the symplectic vector space of odd complex dimension at least five are smoothly isotopic.

Abstract:We classify compact, connected Hamiltonian and quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds of cohomogeneity one (which is the same as being multiplicity free of rank one). Here the group acting is a compact connected Lie group (simply connected in the quasi-Hamiltonian case). This work is a concretization of the more general classification (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1612.03843" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1612.03843">arXiv:1612.03843</a>) of multiplicity free manifolds in the special case of rank one. As a result we obtain numerous new concrete examples of multiplicity free quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds or, equivalently, Hamiltonian loop group actions.
