Abstract:This is a report on the PLDI 2020 conference, for which I was General Chair, which was held virtually for the first time as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report contains: my personal reflections on the positive and negative aspects of the event; a description of the format of the event and associated logistical details; and data (with some analysis) on attendees' views on the conference format, the extent to which attendees engaged with the conference, attendees' views on virtual vs. physical conferences (with a focus on PLDI specifically) and the diversity of conference registrants. I hope that the report will be a useful resource for organizers of upcoming virtual conferences, and generally interesting to the Programming Languages community and beyond.

Abstract:In 2020, virtual conferences became almost the only alternative to cancellation. Now that the pandemic is subsiding, the pros and cons of virtual conferences need to be reevaluated. In this report, we scrutinize the dynamics and economics of conferences and highlight the history of successful virtual meetings in industry. We also report on the attitudes of conference attendees from an informal survey we ran in spring 2022.

Abstract:This report is an account of the authors' experiences as organizers of WiML's "Un-Workshop" event at ICML 2020. Un-workshops focus on participant-driven structured discussions on a pre-selected topic. For clarity, this event was different from the "WiML Workshop", which is usually co-located with NeurIPS. In this manuscript, organizers, share their experiences with the hope that it will help future organizers to host a successful virtual event under similar conditions. Women in Machine Learning (WiML)'s mission is creating connections within a small community of women working in machine learning, in order to encourage mentorship, networking, and interchange of ideas and increase the impact of women in the community.

Once again, the ICoSR research community cannot meet in person, because of the COVID-19 pandemic; originally, we planned and hoped for at least a hybrid conference to be hosted in Xishuangbanna, China. In order to create safe, meaningful, and wanted human-robot interactions for people and society, to create new ways of thinking about our future lives with robotic technology, virtual conference is essential. The ICoSR Conference is presenting topquality research and the virtual format might even allow us to attract and include more people who would not have the opportunity to travel to China.

Abstract:Conferences are a key place for training and education. Attendees learn about the state of the art of their field, about relevant methods, and acquire networking skills that can support their work. In the world that was changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we often need to organize hybrid training and education events, including conferences, with both in-person and remote attendees. Both organizers and attendees are eager for events that are productive, safe, and that bring together a diverse group of our colleagues, across multiple fields of study, multiple countries, as well as with different capacities to travel and attend in-person and remote meetings. However, the best practices for such hybrid events are still under development. In this document we hope to contribute to this development of best practices: we report on our experiences in organizing a small, hybrid conference, and provide the lessons we learned through this process.

Abstract:Scientific conferences play an important role in advancing research, scholarship, and the careers of emerging scientists. The COVID-19 pandemic offered meeting organizers and researchers alike an opportunity to reimagine what scientific conferences could look like. Virtual conferences can increase inclusivity and accessibility while decreasing costs and carbon emissions. However, it is generally perceived that the digital world fails to adequately recapitulate many of the benefits of in-person face-to-face interactions; these include socializing, and collaborative environments that can forge new research directions and provide critical career development opportunities. On November 15 and 16, 2022, researchers, representatives from diverse scientific conference organizations, leaders in virtual platform technologies, and innovators in conference design gathered online for the Open Access Keystone eSymposium "Reimagining Scientific Conferences." The meeting focused on how conference organizers can leverage lessons from the pandemic and emerging virtual platforms to engage new audiences, rethink strategies for scientific exchange, and decrease the carbon footprint of in-person events.

Abstract:ACM and IEEE have developed a computing curriculum report titled Information Technology Curricular 2017: Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Information Technology, also known as IT2017 [4]. The development of this report has received content contributions from industry and academia through surveys as well as many international conferences and workshops. Open online publication of the report became available in fall of 2017. In this special session, five members of the IT2017 executive committee will present a digest of the content of the report, describe the proposed IT curricular framework, and facilitate open and vigorous discussion of the report's guidelines for developing new information technology programs or enhancing existing ones. The novelty of the report is its focus on industry-informed competencies that IT graduates should have to meet the growing demands of a changing technological world in the next decade. The experience should provide a better understanding of IT in a modern age.

Keeping Fun Alive: an Experience Report on Running Online Coding Camps

Abstract:The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic prohibited radically the collocation and face-to-face interactions of participants in coding bootcamps and similar experiences, which are key characteristics that help participants to advance technical work. Several specific issues are faced and need to be solved when running online coding camps, which can achieve the same level of positive outcomes for participants. One of such issues is how to keep the same level of fun that participants obtained through physical activities and interactions in the face-to-face settings. In this paper, we report on our experience and insights gained from designing and running a fully remote coding camp that exposes high school students to Agile-based Software Engineering practices to enhance their ability to develop high-quality software. To design the online coding camp, we adapted the face-to-face version of the coding camp to keep the same "level of fun", i.e., adaptations aimed at increasing communication, engaging participants, and introducing fun items to reduce fatigue due to prolonged computer use, while preserving the technical curriculum that enables students to attain the learning goals originally planned. The comparison with the results of the face-to-face coding camp shows that we succeeded in keeping the fun alive in the online edition, and the participants of online camp were able to produce the results at the same level of quality in terms of product and process as in the face-to-face edition. From our experience, we synthesize lessons learned, and we sketch some guidelines for educators.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:The virtual meeting was a success. Several people told us that this was "the best virtual meeting they had seen so far", which, a year into the pandemic and without a commercial provider in the back, is a great success. The biggest point of criticism was the timing: We had programming from UTC 17:00-22:00 (evening and night in central Europe, afternoon on the US East Coast, during the day in South America and on the US West coast, but in the middle of the night for Asia and Australia). There is no good solution, but at least some variation in session time might go a long way to make it easier for all to attend at least some sessions. Feedback also indicates that the schedule was too compressed. Poster sessions and social contacts with the tool Gathertown worked out really well for all that used it. Our way of combining several services (Zoom for plenary and break-out rooms, Zenodo for uploading and viewing posters and proceedings, Google forms for registration and abstract submission, gathertown) allowed for a very low-cost meeting with little overhead (total cost: 600 $ for gathertown, zoom was provided through an institutional subscription, just 4 people on the LOC).

Abstract:Welcome to the conference proceedings of ICCET 2022, the 5th International Conference on Communication Engineering and Technology. Since the continued COVID-19 pandemic made our original plan to host ICCET 2022 in Shanghai infeasible, we followed the footsteps of ICCET 2021 and made this year's conference a virtual event held during February 25–27, 2022 to ensure attendees' safety. We are glad to see that our researchers involved in related filed remain active and productive in this challenging year.

Abstract:The 2021 ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp 2021) took place from September 21–26 virtually, around the world; co-located with the International Symposium on Wearable Computers (ISWC). This article discusses some of the interesting research published in the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable, and Ubiquitous Technologies, as well as those accepted at ISWC this year—presented virtually with Live Q&A over Whova, Zoom, and Gather.Town. Furthermore, it covers some of the interesting plenary events, such as the Keynotes by Cynthia Breazeal (MIT Media Labs) and John LePore (Perception), as well as the panel discussion on the 30th anniversary of Mark Weiser's paper on the Vision of a Computer for the 21st Century. Finally, some of the interesting highlights from the ISWC gadget-show and design-exhibition, alongside multiple virtual workshops as part of the adjunct program have been presented.

Abstract:This paper is a report of the Workshop on Simulations for Information Access (Sim4IA) workshop at SIGIR 2024. The workshop had two keynotes, a panel discussion, nine lightning talks, and two breakout sessions. Key takeaways were user simulation's importance in academia and industry, the possible bridging of online and offline evaluation, and the issues of organizing a companion shared task around user simulations for information access. We report on how we organized the workshop, provide a brief overview of what happened at the workshop, and summarize the main topics and findings of the workshop and future work.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has by-and-large prevented in-person meetings since March 2020. While the increasing deployment of effective vaccines around the world is a very positive development, the timeline and pathway to "normality" is uncertain and the "new normal" we will settle into is anyone's guess. Particle physics, like many other scientific fields, has more than a year of experience in holding virtual meetings, workshops, and conferences. A great deal of experimentation and innovation to explore how to execute these meetings effectively has occurred. Therefore, it is an appropriate time to take stock of what we as a community learned from running virtual meetings and discuss possible strategies for the future. Continuing to develop effective strategies for meetings with a virtual component is likely to be important for reducing the carbon footprint of our research activities, while also enabling greater diversity and inclusion for participation. This report summarizes a virtual two-day workshop on Virtual Meetings held May 5-6, 2021 which brought together experts from both inside and outside of high-energy physics to share their experiences and practices with organizing and executing virtual workshops, and to develop possible strategies for future meetings as we begin to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. This report outlines some of the practices and tools that have worked well which we hope will serve as a valuable resource for future virtual meeting organizers in all scientific fields.

Abstract:This report presents the debates, posters, and discussions of the Sim2Real workshop held in conjunction with the 2020 edition of the "Robotics: Science and System" conference. Twelve leaders of the field took competing debate positions on the definition, viability, and importance of transferring skills from simulation to the real world in the context of robotics problems. The debaters also joined a large panel discussion, answering audience questions and outlining the future of Sim2Real in robotics. Furthermore, we invited extended abstracts to this workshop which are summarized in this report. Based on the workshop, this report concludes with directions for practitioners exploiting this technology and for researchers further exploring open problems in this area.

Abstract:Cognitive Computing (CC) is a contemporary field of fundamental intelligence theories and general AI technologies triggered by the transdisciplinary development in intelligence, computer, brain, knowledge, cognitive, robotic, and cybernetic sciences for engineering implementations. This paper presents a summary of the plenary panel (Part II) on the theoretical foundations of CI/CC and recent breakthroughs in AI engineering reported in the 20th IEEE International ICCI*CC Conference (ICCI*CC'21). The latest advances in CI and CC towards general AI are presented by twenty-two distinguished panelists. Strategic AI engineering applications in CI, CC, and cognitive systems are elaborated for abstract intelligence, cognitive robots, autonomous systems, intelligent vehicles, and safety-and-mission-critical systems.
