Statistical Characteristics of the Electron Isotropy Boundary

Abstract:Utilizing observations from the ELFIN satellites, we present a statistical study of $\sim$2000 events in 2019-2020 characterizing the occurrence in magnetic local time (MLT) and latitude of $\geq$50 keV electron isotropy boundaries (IBs) at Earth, and the dependence of associated precipitation on geomagnetic activity. The isotropy boundary for an electron of a given energy is the magnetic latitude poleward of which persistent isotropized pitch-angle distributions ($J_{prec}/J_{perp}\sim 1$) are first observed to occur, interpreted as resulting from magnetic field-line curvature scattering (FLCS) in the equatorial magnetosphere. We find that energetic electron IBs can be well-recognized on the nightside from dusk until dawn, under all geomagnetic activity conditions, with a peak occurrence rate of almost 90% near $\sim$22 hours in MLT, remaining above 80% from 21 to 01 MLT. The IBs span a wide range of IGRF magnetic latitudes from $60^\circ$-$74^\circ$, with a maximum occurrence between $66^\circ$-$71^\circ$ (L of 6-8), shifting to lower latitudes and pre-midnight local times with activity. The precipitating energy flux of $\geq$50 keV electrons averaged over the IB-associated latitudes varies over four orders of magnitude, up to $\sim$1 erg/cm$^2$-s, and often includes electron energies exceeding 1 MeV. The local time distribution of IB-associated energies and precipitating fluxes also exhibit peak values near midnight for low activity, shifting toward pre-midnight for elevated activity. The percentage of the total energy deposited over the high-latitude regions ($55^\circ$ to $80^\circ$; or IGRF $L\gtrsim 3$) attributed to IBs is 10-20%, on average, or about 10 MW of total atmospheric power input, but at times can be up to $\sim$100% of the total $\geq$50 keV electron energy deposition over the entire sub-auroral and auroral zone region, exceeding 1 GW in atmospheric power input.

Abstract:Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron (EMIC) waves can drive radiation belt depletion and Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites can detect the resulting electron and proton precipitation. The ELFIN (Electron Losses and Fields InvestigatioN) CubeSats provide an excellent opportunity to study the properties of EMIC-driven electron precipitation with much higher energy and pitch-angle resolution than previously allowed. We collect EMIC-driven electron precipitation events from ELFIN observations and use POES (Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites) to search for 10s-100s keV proton precipitation nearby as a proxy of EMIC wave activity. Electron precipitation mainly occurs on localized radial scales (0.3 L), over 15-24 MLT and 5-8 L shells, stronger at MeV energies and weaker down to 100-200 keV. Additionally, the observed loss cone pitch-angle distribution agrees with quasilinear predictions at >250 keV (more filled loss cone with increasing energy), while additional mechanisms are needed to explain the observed low-energy precipitation.

Abstract:Intensive studies have been conducted to understand the anisotropy of solar wind turbulence. However, the anisotropy of Elsasser variables (Z(+)) in 2D wave-vector space has yet to be investigated. Here we first verify the transformation based on the projection-slice theorem between the power spectral density PSD2D(k(parallel to), k(perpendicular to)) and the spatial correlation function CF2D(r(parallel to), r(perpendicular to)). Based on the application of the transformation to the magnetic field and the particle measurements from the WIND spacecraft, we investigate the spectral anisotropy of Elsasser variables (Z(perpendicular to)), and the distribution of residual energy E-R, Alfven ratio R-A, and Elsasser ratio R-E in the (k(parallel to), k(perpendicular to)) space. The spectra PSD2D(k(parallel to), k(perpendicular to)) of B, V, and Z(major) (the larger of Z(+/-)) show a similar pattern that PSD2D(k(parallel to), k(perpendicular to)) is mainly distributed along a ridge inclined toward the k(perpendicular to) axis. This is probably the signature of the oblique Alfvenic fluctuations propagating outwardly. Unlike those of B, V, and Z(major), the spectrum PSD2D(k(parallel to), k(perpendicular to)) of Z(minor) is distributed mainly along the k(perpendicular to) axis. Close to the k(perpendicular to) axis, vertical bar E-R vertical bar becomes larger while R-A becomes smaller, suggesting that the dominance of magnetic energy over kinetic energy becomes more significant at small k(parallel to). R-E is larger at small k(parallel to), implying that PSD2D(k(parallel to), k(perpendicular to)) of Z(minor) is more concentrated along the k(perpendicular to) direction as compared to that of Z(major). The residual energy condensate at small k(parallel to) is consistent with simulation results in which ER is spontaneously generated by Alfven wave interaction.
Omnidirectional Energetic Electron Fluxes from 150 km to 20,000 km: an ELFIN-Based Model

Abstract:The strong variations of energetic electron fluxes in the Earth's inner magnetosphere are notoriously hard to forecast. Developing accurate empirical models of electron fluxes from low to high altitudes at all latitudes is therefore useful to improve our understanding of flux variations and to assess radiation hazards for spacecraft systems. In the present work, energy- and pitch-angle-resolved precipitating, trapped, and backscattered electron fluxes measured at low altitude by Electron Loss and Fields Investigation (ELFIN) CubeSats are used to infer omnidirectional fluxes at altitudes below and above the spacecraft, from 150 km to 20,000 km, making use of adiabatic transport theory and quasi-linear diffusion theory. The inferred fluxes are fitted as a function of selected parameters using a stepwise multivariate optimization procedure, providing an analytical model of omnidirectional electron flux along each geomagnetic field line, based on measurements from only one spacecraft in low Earth orbit. The modeled electron fluxes are provided as a function of $L$-shell, altitude, energy, and two different indices of past substorm activity, computed over the preceding 4 hours or 3 days, potentially allowing to disentangle impulsive processes (such as rapid injections) from cumulative processes (such as inward radial diffusion and wave-driven energization). The model is validated through comparisons with equatorial measurements from the Van Allen Probes, demonstrating the broad applicability of the present method. The model indicates that both impulsive and time-integrated substorm activity partly control electron fluxes in the outer radiation belt and in the plasma sheet.

Abstract:Using Van Allen Probes Relativistic Electron Proton Telescope (REPT) pitch angle resolved electron flux data from September 2012 to March 2015, we investigate in detail the global occurrence pattern of equatorial (||3 degrees) butterfly distribution of outer zone relativistic electrons and its potential correlation with the solar wind dynamic pressure. The statistical results demonstrate that these butterfly distributions occur with the highest occurrence rate similar to 80% at similar to 20-04 magnetic local time (MLT) and L>similar to 5.5 and with the second peak (>similar to 50%) at similar to 11-15 MLT of lower L shells similar to 4.0. They can also extend to L=3.5 and to other MLT intervals but with the occurrence rates predominantly<similar to 25%. It is further shown that outer zone relativistic electron butterfly distributions are likely to peak between 58 degrees and 79 degrees for L=4.0 and 5.0 and between 37 degrees and 58 degrees for L=6.0, regardless of the level of solar wind dynamic pressure. Relativistic electron butterfly distributions at L=4.0 also exhibit a pronounced day-night asymmetry in response to the P-dyn variations. Compared to the significant L shell and MLT dependence of the global occurrence pattern, outer zone relativistic electron butterfly distributions show much less but still discernable sensitivity to P-dyn, geomagnetic activity level, and electron energy, the full understanding of which requires future attempts of detailed simulations that combine and differentiate underlying physical mechanisms of the geomagnetic field asymmetry and scattering by various magnetospheric waves.
Statistics of the Field‐aligned Currents at the High‐latitude Energetic Electron Boundaries in the Nightside: Cluster Observation

Abstract:Magnetic field disturbances with a clear bipolar signature are frequently observed when the Cluster spacecraft fleet passes through both southern and northern high-latitude energetic electron boundaries at the nightside magnetosphere. The dominant variation of the bipolar signature is in the azimuthal direction of the local mean field-aligned coordinate, indicating a field-aligned current. From 2001 to 2008, we have examined 110 events with the magnetic field and energetic electron measurements. The main results can be summarized as follows: (1) The density and thickness of the field-aligned current, calculated under the assumption of the one-dimensional sheet, are in order of tens of nA/m(2) and hundreds of kilometers, respectively. (2) Currents flowing into and away from the ionosphere tend to be observed in the postmidnight and premidnight sector, respectively, which have the same polarity as the region 1 current system. (3) These currents mainly distribute in the 60 degrees-75 degrees magnetic latitude region after mapping to the ionosphere. We also find that the current density and corresponding magnetic field variation are positively correlated with the Kp index and solar wind pressure, but almost independent of the AE index.

Abstract:We present an analysis of the ionospheric electric field dynamics at high latitudes during periods of quiet and disturbed geomagnetic activity by exploiting recent advancements in dynamical systems and extreme value theory. Specifically, we employed two key indicators: the instantaneous dimension d, which evaluates the degrees of freedom within the system, and the extremal index θ, which quantifies the system's persistence in a given state. Electric field measurements were obtained from the CSES-01 satellite at mid- and high latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. Our analysis revealed that the instantaneous dimension increases upon crossing specific ionospheric regions corresponding to the auroral oval boundaries. Outside these regions, the instantaneous dimension fluctuates around the state-space dimension, suggesting an ergodic nature of the system. As geomagnetic activity intensifies, differences in the properties of various ionospheric regions persist, albeit with an increased system instability characterized by higher θ values, thus indicating the externally driven nature of the electric field response to geomagnetic activity. This study provides new insights into the spatial and temporal variability of electric field fluctuations in the ionosphere, highlighting the complex interplay between geomagnetic conditions and ionospheric dynamics.

Abstract:We statistically evaluate the global distribution and energy spectrum of electron precipitation at low‐Earth‐orbit, using unprecedented pitch‐angle and energy resolved data from the Electron Losses and Fields INvestigation CubeSats. Our statistical results indicate that during active conditions, the ∼63 keV electron precipitation ratio peaks at L > 6 at midnight, whereas the spatial distribution of precipitating energy flux peaks between the dawn and noon sectors. ∼1 MeV electron precipitation ratio peaks near midnight at L > ∼6 but is enhanced near dusk during active times. The energy spectrum of the precipitation ratio shows reversal points indicating energy dispersion as a function of L shell in both the slot region and at L > ∼6, consistent with hiss‐driven precipitation and current sheet scattering, respectively. Our findings provide accurate quantification of electron precipitation at various energies in a broad region of the Earth's magnetosphere, which is critical for magnetosphere‐ionosphere coupling.

Abstract:In the radiation belts, energetic and relativistic electron precipitation into the atmosphere is expected to be mainly controlled over the long term by quasi-linear pitch-angle scattering by whistler-mode and electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. Accordingly, statistical electron lifetimes have been derived from quasi-linear diffusion theory on the basis of multi-year wave statistics. However, the full consistency of such statistical quasi-linear models of electron lifetimes with both measured electron lifetimes, spectra of trapped and precipitated electron fluxes, and wave-driven diffusion rates inferred from electron flux measurements, has not yet been verified in detail. In the present study, we use data from Electron Loss and Fields Investigation (ELFIN) mission CubeSats, launched in September 2018 in low Earth orbit, to carry out such comparisons between quasi-linear diffusion theory and observed electron flux variations. We show that statistical theoretical lifetime models are in reasonable agreement with electron pitch-angle diffusion rates inferred from the precipitated to trapped 100 keV electron flux ratio measured by ELFIN after correction for atmospheric backscatter, as well as with timescales of trapped electron flux decay independently measured over several days by ELFIN. The present results demonstrate for the first time a broad consistency between timescales of trapped electron flux decay, the pitch-angle distribution of precipitated electrons, and quasi-linear models of wave-driven electron loss, showing the reliability of such statistical electron lifetime models parameterized by geomagnetic activity for evaluating electron precipitation into the atmosphere during not too disturbed periods.
