Abstract:In this paper, we present Cluster observations of a magnetotail reconnection event without the presence of an obvious guide magnetic field and analyze electron pitch angle distributions in the vicinity of the X line and the outflow region, respectively. In the vicinity of the X line, at lower energies the distributions are highly anisotropic (field‐aligned bidirectional anisotropic), while at higher energies, the electrons are observed to flow away from the X line along the magnetic field lines. The electron distributions change largely in the outflow region. At the edge of the outflow region, at lower energies, the electrons flow toward the X line, while the electrons at higher energies are directed away from the X line. When the satellites approach the center of the current sheet, at lower energies, the electrons have field‐aligned bidirectional distributions, while at higher energies, the electron distributions are isotropic. The generation mechanisms of such distributions are explained by following typical electron trajectories in the electric and magnetic fields of magnetic reconnection, which are obtained in two‐dimensional particle‐in‐cell simulations. It is shown that the observed high‐energy electrons directed away from the X line both in the vicinity of the X line and in the outflow region are due to the acceleration by the reconnection electric field near the X line, and the field‐aligned bidirectional distributions at lower energies are caused by the effects of the magnetic mirror in the reconnection site. The isotropic distributions at higher energies in the outflow region are the results of the electron stochastic motions when their gyroradii are comparable to the curvature radii of the magnetic field lines.

Abstract:Flapping motion of the current sheets of planetary magnetotails is a common dynamic phenomenon. Previous studies of the Earth's magnetotail suggest that its flapping motion has two forms, that is, kink‐like flapping that can propagate as waves toward both flanks and steady flapping that moves up and down but does not propagate. Although some models have been proposed to explain the kink‐like flapping, its mechanism remains unclear. This paper surveys 87 flapping events statistically with respect to their flapping types, using the multipoint measurements of Cluster. The statistical results show that the up‐down steady flapping events tend to occur around the midnight region, and the kink‐like flapping events tend to occur near both flanks of the magnetotail. Thus, we propose that kink‐like flapping motion is causally related to steady flapping motion; that is, the up and down motion of steady flapping around the midnight region induces kink‐like flapping waves, which propagate toward both flanks of the magnetotail.

Abstract:Satellite observations have revealed that superthermal electrons in space plasma generally possess a power law distribution. In this paper, we utilize a power law function to model the omnidirectional differential fluxes of superthermal electrons observed by Cluster in the magnetosheath. By assuming an isotropic pitch angle distribution and performing a nonlinear least squares fitting, we can calculate the index a of the power law distribution of the superthermal electrons. We found that in the magnetosheath the indices alpha of the power law distributions decrease with the increase of w(pe)/Omega(e). It is consistent with the results of the recent particle-in-cell simulations, which described the electron distributions scattered by enhanced whistler waves. This is the first reported observation of this relation in space plasma.

Abstract:Using measurements by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft in the magnetotail, we studied electron distribution functions across an electron diffusion region. The dependence of the non-gyrotropic distribution on the energy and vertical distance from the EDR mid-plane was revealed for the first time. The non-gyrotropic distribution was observed everywhere except for an extremely narrow layer right at the EDR mid-plane. The energy of the non-gyrotropic distribution increased with growth of the vertical distance from the mid-plane. For the electrons within certain energy range, they exhibited the non-gyrotropic distribution at the distance further away from the mid-plane than that expected from the meandering motion. The correlation between the crescent-shaped distribution with multiple stripes and the large Hall electric field was established. It appears that the measured non-gyrotropic distribution and the crescent-shaped distribution were caused by the meandering motion and the Hall electric field together.
Statistical Research on the Motion Properties of the Magnetotail Current Sheet: Cluster Observations

Abstract:The origin of the flapping motion of the earth’s magnetotail current sheet is one of the most important problems in the magnetotail dynamics. Using Cluster data, we make a statistical research on the motion properties of the magnetotail current sheet of 2001 and 2003. We calculate the velocities of the magnetotail current sheet using new methods and obtain the distribution of the magnetotail current sheet velocities in the X-Y plane in GSE coordinate system. Our results show that although most of the current sheets were propagating toward the tail flanks and those of the exceptions lay in dusk side, which is consistent with previous studies, the proportions of the current sheet which were propagating toward midnight (where |Y GSE|=0) were higher than those in previous studies. Motions of the current sheet in the middle area (|Y GSE|<8 Re) of the magnetotail are investigated. Relatively high value of the Z component of the velocity further confirms that the middle area of the magnetotail might be a source region for the motion of the current sheets which were propagating towards the tail flanks. According to our case studies, the way the current sheets propagated toward midnight area differs significantly from that toward dusk and dawn side, from which we infer that there might be two different kinds of current sheet motions originated from different sources. The statistical results of this paper may give some clues for further studies on the origin of the flapping motion of the magnetotail current sheet.

Abstract:We explore the geometry of the flapping motion of geomagnetotail current sheet with the magnetic measurements of the Cluster (constellation) using a newly developed technique. The principal curvatures and directions of the surfaces of the flapping current sheet are successfully deduced by the normal field analysis (NFA). Results show that the directions with the minimum curvature of surfaces of flapping motion are approximately along the Sun-Earth line, while the ones with maximum curvature are mostly in the dawn-dusk plane. It is confirmed that the tail flapping motion is a wave arising in the Y-Z plane, but not bent along the Sun-Earth line.

Abstract:Mirror-mode structures are widely observed in space plasma environments. Although plasma features within the structures have been extensively investigated in theoretical models and numerical simulations, relatively few observational studies have been made, due to a lack of high-cadence measurements of particle distributions in previous space missions. In this work, electron dynamics associated with mirror-mode structures are studied based on Magnetospheric Multiscale observations of electron pitch angle distributions. We define mirror-mode peaks/troughs as the region where the magnetic field strength is greater/smaller than the mean field. The observations show that most electrons are trapped inside the mirror-mode troughs and display a donut-like pitch angle distribution configuration. Besides the trapped electrons in mirror-mode troughs, we find that electrons are also trapped between ambient mirror-mode peaks and coexisting untrapped electrons within the mirror-mode structure. Analysis shows that the observed donut-like electron distributions are the result of betatron cooling and the spatial dependence of electron pitch angles within the structure.

Abstract:Radiation belt electrons can exhibit different types of pitch angle distributions in response to various magnetospheric processes. Butterfly distributions, characterized by flux minima at pitch angles around 90°, are broadly observed in both the outer and inner belts and the slot region. Butterfly distributions close to the outer magnetospheric boundary have been attributed to drift shell splitting and losses to the magnetopause. However, their occurrence in the inner belt and the slot region has hitherto not been resolved. By analyzing the particle and wave data collected by the Van Allen Probes during a geomagnetic storm, we combine test particle calculations and Fokker-Planck simulations to reveal that scattering by equatorial magnetosonic waves is a significant cause for the formation of energetic electron butterfly distributions in the inner magnetosphere. Another event shows that a large-amplitude magnetosonic wave in the outer belt can create electron butterfly distributions in just a few minutes.

Abstract:We present new observations of electron distributions and the accompanying waves during the current sheet activities at similar to 60 R-E in the geomagnetic tail detected by the ARTEMIS ( Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, and Electrodynamics of the Moon's Interaction with the Sun) spacecraft. We find that electron flat-top distribution is a common feature near the neutral sheet of the tailward flowing plasmas, consistent with the electron distributions that are shaped in the reconnection region. Whistler mode waves are generated by the anisotropic electron temperature associated with the electron flat-top distributions. These whistler mode waves are modulated by low frequency ion scale waves that are possibly excited by the high-energy ions injected during the current sheet instability. The magnetic and electric fields of the ion scale waves are in phase with electron density variations, indicating that they are compressional ion cyclotron waves. Our observations present examples of the dynamical processes occurring during the current sheet activities far downstream of the geomagnetic tail. Published by AIP Publishing.
Electron Pitch Angle Variations Recorded at the High Magnetic Latitude Boundary Layer by the NUADU Instrument on the TC-2 Spacecraft

Abstract:The NUADU (NeUtral Atom Detector Unit) experiment aboard TC-2 recorded, with high temporal and spatial resolution, 4π solid angle images of electrons (~50-125 keV) spiraling around geomagnetic field lines at high northern magnetic latitudes (L>10), during its in-orbit commissioning phase (September 2004). The ambient magnetic field, as well as electrons in other energy ranges, were simultaneously measured by the TC-2 magnetometer (FGM), the plasma electron and current experiment (PEACE), the low energy ion detector (LEID) and the high energy electron detector (HEED). The NUADU data showed that up-flowing electron beams could form "ring-like" and "dumbbell-type" pitch angle distributions (PADs) in the region sampled. Changes in these pitch angle distributions due to transient magnetic variations are suggested to have been associated with electron acceleration along the geomagnetic field lines. A nested magnetic bottle configuration that formed due to the propagation towards the Earth of a magnetic pulse, is proposed to have been associated with this process.

Abstract:We report the temporal evolution of electron pitch angle distributions behind the dipolarization front (DF) in the Earth's magnetotail with observations of the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) spacecraft. Taking advantage of multipoint observations from the THEMIS mission lined up in space, we study pitch angle distributions of energetic electrons behind the DF during two typical events. Pancake, rolling-pin, and cigar distributions are observed sequentially during the acceleration process. Based on Liouville's theorem, it is revealed that pancake distribution is dominantly formed by betatron acceleration in the early stage, and rolling-pin distribution is generated by both dominant Fermi and weak betatron acceleration in the transition stage, while cigar distribution is formed by Fermi acceleration finally. Our results provide comprehensive in situ observational evidence of the temporal evolution of electron acceleration behind the DF during propagation.

The Statistical Characteristics of the Tailward Flows in the Near-Earth Region Explored by TC-1

Abstract:During quiet time and substorm process, tailward flow often explored in the near-Earth magnetotail by TC-1 satellite. The tailward flow is most strong near the equator, and stronger in the dusk-side and dawn-side than that in the night-side. The tailward flow tends to move from the dusk-side and dawn-side to the night-side, and becomes stronger while moving away the Earth. From 1, Jul. 2004 to 31, Nov. 2004, TC-1 satellite explored 516 tailward flow events between 7R_E to 13R_E, which the duration exceed 3 min. The statistic results showed that: Compared with the earward flow from the mid-tail, the near-Earth low latitude tailward flow from the ionosphere is characteristic of the low-temperature and high density; With the tailward flow moving from the lobal region to the plasma sheet, the velocity of the tailward flow decrease, the density and the temperature increase. The tailward flow has distinct anisotropy depending on the difference of the parallel with perpendicular temperature.

Abstract:Energetic (hundreds of keV) electrons in the radiation belt slot region have been found to exhibit the butterfly pitch angle distributions. Resonant interactions with magnetosonic and whistler‐mode waves are two potential mechanisms for the formation of these peculiar distributions. Here we perform a statistical study of energetic electron pitch angle distribution characteristics measured by Van Allen Probes in the slot region during a 3 year period from May 2013 to May 2016. Our results show that electron butterfly distributions are closely related to magnetosonic waves rather than to whistler‐mode waves. Both electron butterfly distributions and magnetosonic waves occur more frequently at the geomagnetically active times than at the quiet times. In a statistical sense, more distinct butterfly distributions usually correspond to magnetosonic waves with larger amplitudes and vice versa. The averaged magnetosonic wave amplitude is less than 5 pT in the case of normal and flat‐top distributions with a butterfly index BI =1 but reaches ∼50–95 pT in the case of distinct butterfly distributions with BI >1.3. For magnetosonic waves with amplitudes >50 pT, the occurrence rate of butterfly distribution is above 80%. Our study suggests that energetic electron butterfly distributions in the slot region are primarily caused by magnetosonic waves.

Abstract:The Shabansky orbit effect can exert a significant influence on the dynamics of particle motion. However, the north‐south asymmetry of the Shabansky orbits has received relatively little attention in previous research. This study investigates this asymmetry to elucidate the recently observed phenomenon of flux separation in the pitch angle distribution during drift echo events. The asymmetry in Shabansky orbits between the northern and southern hemispheres leads to two distinct drift periods for particles with specific equatorial pitch angles, resulting in the flux separation. To quantify this phenomenon, we develop a mathematical model for the magnetic field, enabling the generation of asymmetrical Shabansky orbits. The calculated drift periods for particles with different equatorial pitch angles corresponds with the characteristics of flux separation, providing evidence to support our hypothesis that the north‐south asymmetry of Shabansky orbits is responsible for flux separation.
