Abstract:The Shabansky orbit effect can exert a significant influence on the dynamics of particle motion. However, the north‐south asymmetry of the Shabansky orbits has received relatively little attention in previous research. This study investigates this asymmetry to elucidate the recently observed phenomenon of flux separation in the pitch angle distribution during drift echo events. The asymmetry in Shabansky orbits between the northern and southern hemispheres leads to two distinct drift periods for particles with specific equatorial pitch angles, resulting in the flux separation. To quantify this phenomenon, we develop a mathematical model for the magnetic field, enabling the generation of asymmetrical Shabansky orbits. The calculated drift periods for particles with different equatorial pitch angles corresponds with the characteristics of flux separation, providing evidence to support our hypothesis that the north‐south asymmetry of Shabansky orbits is responsible for flux separation.

Abstract:This study analyzes the effects of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves on relativistic electron scattering and losses in the Earth’s outer radiation belt. EMIC emissions are commonly observed in the inner magnetosphere and are known to reach high amplitudes, causing significant pitch angle changes in primarily > 1 MeV electrons via cyclotron resonance interactions. We run test-particle simulations of electrons streaming through helium band waves with different amplitudes and wave normal angles and assess the sensitivity of advective and diffusive scattering behaviors to these two parameters, including the possibility of very oblique propagation. The numerical analysis confirms the importance of harmonic resonances for oblique waves, and the very oblique waves are observed to efficiently scatter both co-streaming and counter-streaming electrons. However, strong finite Larmor radius effects limit the scattering efficiency at high pitch angles. Recently discussed force-bunching effects and associated strong positive advection at low pitch angles are, surprisingly, shown to cause no decrease in the phase space density of precipitating electrons, and it is demonstrated that the transport of electrons into the loss cone balances out the scattering out of the loss cone. In the case of high-amplitude obliquely propagating waves, weak but non-negligible losses are detected well below the minimum resonance energy, and we identify them as the result of non-linear fractional resonances. Simulations and theoretical analysis suggest that these resonances might contribute to subrelativistic electron precipitation but are likely to be overshadowed by non-resonant effects.

Abstract:This injection of energetic electrons into the slot region may be associated with the plasmapause movement and Hiss/Chorus enhancement. This flux enhancement is possibly associated with convective transport from the plasma sheet, enhanced radial diffusion and local wave-particle interaction acceleration. By adopting a fitting parameter of loss time tL we solved the bounce-averaged pitch angle diffusion equation driven by field-aligned whistler-mode waves (including chorus and hiss). We show that pitch-angle scattering can account for the pitch-angle distribution evolution in 30–500 keVelectrons in the innermost radiation belt near L = 1.7 (as observed by Polar satellite) and the slot region 2 < L <3 . Inparticular,simulatedresultsindicatethattheloss-coneregionisalmostempty,andoutside the loss-cone region both flux and anisotropy of energetic electrons are reduced with the gyroresonant time. The obtained time scale for the pitch-angle distribution evolution is found to be approximately tens of hours, consistent with observation.

Abstract:We discuss here pitch angle distributions of energetic ions and electrons at substorm onset. The transition signatures of ion pitch angle distributions imply that energetic ions experience field‐aligned acceleration after substorm onset which is directed either toward or away from the equator. Our studies indicate that the two often mentioned acceleration mechanisms—parallel electric field and “convection surge” acceleration—cannot explain the observed field‐aligned acceleration signatures. An analysis of the parallel Lorentz equation of ions suggests that under the premise that there exist large temporal variations of the magnetic field, two magnetic field topologies are responsible for the observed field‐aligned acceleration.

Abstract:AbstractUltra‐low frequency (ULF) waves can effectively accelerate ring current ions through drift‐bounce resonance. Conventional theories have been developed to understand this resonance since the dawn of the space age, which usually assume ULF waves are quasi‐steady in time. However, ULF waves would experience growth and damping stages in the real magnetosphere, which requires an adjustment of the conventional theories. Here, we attempt to reveal how ions respond to evolving ULF waves. By analyzing an event observed by Van Allen Probe A and reproducing the observations via simulation, we find the phase shift of ion flux oscillation across resonant pitch angles varies with time, when wave growth and damping cannot be neglected. As a result, the inclination angle of stripes in pitch angle spectrogram varies with time, causing “fishbone‐like” pitch angle structures. One should take into account such ion behaviors when considering the role of drift‐bounce resonance in the real magnetosphere.

Enhanced Pitch Angle Diffusion due to Electron-Whistler Interactions during Disturbed Times

Abstract:During periods of increased magnetospheric activity, whistler wave emissions have been observed with increased wave amplitudes. We consider a pitch angle diffusion mechanism that is shown to scale with whistler wave amplitude and hence is 'switched on' during these periods of intense activity. We consider the interaction between relativistic electrons and two oppositely directed, parallel propagating whistler mode waves. We show that for intense whistlers this process is stochastic and results in strong electron pitch angle diffusion. We show that the interaction is rapid, occur on timescales of the order of tens of electron gyroperiods and that the interaction is sensitive to wave amplitude, wave frequency and electron energy.

Abstract:Particle energization and energy dissipation in electromagnetic environments are longstanding topics of intensive research in space, laboratory, and astrophysical plasmas. One challenge is to understand these conversion processes at smaller and smaller spatial/temporal scales. In this Letter, with very high cadence measurements of particle distributions from the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft, we report evidence of evolution of an identified microscale (i.e., electron gyro-scale) magnetic cavity structure and reveal within it a unique energization process that does not adhere to prevailing adiabatic invariance theory. Our finding indicates that this process is largely energy dependent, and can accelerate/decelerate charged particles inside the trapping region during their gyromotion, clearly altering the particle distribution.
Resonant Scattering of Outer Zone Relativistic Electrons by Multiband Emic Waves and Resultant Electron Loss Time Scales

Abstract:To improve our understanding of the role of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in radiation belt electron dynamics, we perform a comprehensive analysis of EMIC wave-induced resonant scattering of outer zone relativistic (>0.5MeV) electrons and resultant electron loss time scales with respect to EMIC wave band, L shell, and wave normal angle model. The results demonstrate that while H+-band EMIC waves dominate the scattering losses of similar to 1-4MeV outer zone relativistic electrons, it is He+-band and O+-band waves that prevail over the pitch angle diffusion of ultrarelativistic electrons at higher energies. Given the wave amplitude, EMIC waves at higher L shells tend to resonantly interact with a larger population of outer zone relativistic electrons and drive their pitch angle scattering more efficiently. Obliquity of EMIC waves can reduce the efficiency of wave-induced relativistic electron pitch angle scattering. Compared to the frequently adopted parallel or quasi-parallel model, use of the latitudinally varying wave normal angle model produces the largest decrease in H+-band EMIC wave scattering rates at pitch angles similar to 5MeV. At a representative nominal amplitude of 1nT, EMIC wave scattering produces the equilibrium state (i.e., the lowest normal mode under which electrons at the same energy but different pitch angles decay exponentially on the same time scale) of outer belt relativistic electrons within several to tens of minutes and the following exponential decay extending to higher pitch angles on time scales from <1min to similar to 1h. The electron loss cone can be either empty as a result of the weak diffusion or heavily/fully filled due to approaching the strong diffusion limit, while the trapped electron population at high pitch angles close to 90 degrees remains intact because of no resonant scattering. In this manner, EMIC wave scattering has the potential to deepen the anisotropic distribution of outer zone relativistic electrons by reshaping their pitch angle profiles to top-hat. Overall, H+-band and He+-band EMIC waves are most efficient in producing the pitch angle scattering loss of relativistic electrons at similar to 1-2MeV. In contrast, the presence of O+-band EMIC waves, while at a smaller occurrence rate, can dominate the scattering loss of 5-10MeV electrons in the entire region of the outer zone, which should be considered in future modeling of the outer zone relativistic electron dynamics.

Abstract:Radiation belt electrons can exhibit different types of pitch angle distributions in response to various magnetospheric processes. Butterfly distributions, characterized by flux minima at pitch angles around 90°, are broadly observed in both the outer and inner belts and the slot region. Butterfly distributions close to the outer magnetospheric boundary have been attributed to drift shell splitting and losses to the magnetopause. However, their occurrence in the inner belt and the slot region has hitherto not been resolved. By analyzing the particle and wave data collected by the Van Allen Probes during a geomagnetic storm, we combine test particle calculations and Fokker-Planck simulations to reveal that scattering by equatorial magnetosonic waves is a significant cause for the formation of energetic electron butterfly distributions in the inner magnetosphere. Another event shows that a large-amplitude magnetosonic wave in the outer belt can create electron butterfly distributions in just a few minutes.

Abstract:Dipolarization fronts (DFs), earthward-propagating magnetic transients with a strong magnetic field, are important regions favorable for energetic electron acceleration in the magnetotail. The DF-driven electron acceleration usually generates coherent pitch angle distributions (PADs) inside flux pileup regions (FPRs), i.e., strong magnetic field regions behind the DFs, such as pancake, butterfly, and cigar distributions, which dominate at different tail regions and often occur separately. Here we present unique observations of electron PAD evolution inside the FPR, showing that electron PAD underwent local transition from cigar distribution, to butterfly distribution, then toward pancake distribution, forming a U-shaped distribution. During the local transition, electron perpendicular flux (relative to the local magnetic field) is anticorrelated with magnetic field strength, contrary to traditional expectation. The unexpected feature of the electron U-shaped distribution is associated with multiple physical processes at different scales, including local expansion of flux tubes and pitch angle variation near the neutral sheet. These atypical observations can advance our current understanding of electron acceleration and transport in the magnetosphere.

Neoclassical Pitch-Angle Scattering of Runaway Electrons

Abstract:It is discovered that the tokamak field geometry generates a pitch-angle scattering effect for runaway electrons. This neoclassical pitch-angle scattering is much stronger than the collisional scattering and invalidates the gyro-center model for runaway electrons. As a result, the energy limit of runaway electrons is found to be larger than the prediction of the gyro-center model and to depend heavily on the background magnetic field.

Abstract:In the Earth's inner magnetosphere, charged particles can be accelerated and transported by ultralow frequency (ULF) waves via drift resonance. We investigate the effects of magnetospheric convection on the nonlinear drift resonance process, which provides an inhomogeneity factor S to externally drive the pendulum equation that describes the particle motion in the ULF wave field. The S factor, defined as the ratio of the driving amplitude to the square of the pendulum trapping frequency, is found to vary with magnetic local time and as a consequence, oscillates quasi-periodically at the particle drift frequency. To better understand the particle behavior governed by the driven pendulum equation, we carry out simulations to obtain the evolution of electron distribution functions in energy and L-shell phase space. We find that resonant electrons can remain trapped by the low-m ULF waves under strong convection electric field, whereas for high-m ULF waves, the electrons trajectories can be significantly modified. More interestingly, the electron drift frequency is close to the nonlinear trapping frequency for intermediate-m ULF waves, which corresponds to chaotic motion of resonant electrons. These findings shed new light on the nature of particle coherent and diffusive transport in the inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are long suggested to account for the rapid loss of radiation belt relativistic electrons. Here we perform both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation to comprehensively investigate the nonlinear interaction between EMIC wave and relativistic electrons. In particular, we emphasize the dependence of nonlinear processes on the electron initial latitude. The nonlinear phase trapping yields negative equatorial pitch angle transport, with efficiency varying over the electron initial latitude, implying that it can increase the loss rate predicted by quasilinear theory. The nonlinear channel effect phase bunching produces positive equatorial pitch angle transport, less dependent on the electron initial latitude, suggesting that it can decrease the loss rate predicted by quasilinear theory. The nonlinear cluster effect phase bunching alternately causes positive and negative equatorial pitch angle transport, quasi‐periodically dependent on the electron initial latitude, suggesting that it can either decrease or increase the loss rate predicted by the quasilinear theory. Such latitudinal dependence of nonlinear processes should be taken into account in the evaluation of radiation belt electron loss rate driven by EMIC waves.
Pitch Angle Evolutions of Oxygen Ions Driven by Storm Time ULF Poloidal Standing Waves

Abstract:We present the first systematic observational study on the pitch angle evolutions of O+ ions associated with ULF Pc5 poloidal standing waves excited during geomagnetic storms. The O+ ion measurements are made on board the CLUSTER satellites with the Composition Distribution Function (CODIF) instrument, which covers energies from 1 to 40 keV, a low-energy portion of the ring current. We find that the nature of the ion flux oscillation strongly depends on the magnetic latitude of observation. Near the magnetic equator, the flux oscillation appears only around 0 degrees and 180 degrees pitch angles with no phase delay, which can result from wave-particle interactions in a fundamental mode standing wave with a strong poloidal component. Away from the equator, however, the flux oscillation appears in a wide range of pitch angles with strong pitch angle dispersion that reverses sign from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere. The latitude dependence of the dispersion signature is explained by combining the ion energy modulation near the equator and the time of flight effect of ion bounce motion. The analysis technique shown in this study can be used to diagnose the field line mode structure of ULF waves.

Abstract:Drift‐bounce resonance between ultralow frequency (ULF) waves and ions is essential for ion energization in the magnetosphere. Here, we present the first comprehensive study of drift‐bounce resonance in the dayside outer magnetosphere, where off‐equatorial magnetic field minima would strongly distort ions' bounce and drift motion. A generalized theory is proposed, in which the effects of off‐equatorial minima, time‐evolving fields and ion bounce motion are taken into account. In consequence of these effects, ion pitch angle distributions undergo dramatic changes. In the presence of off‐equatorial minima, the time‐of‐flight effect of ion bounce motion forms latitude‐dependent dispersions besides “paw‐track shaped” structures, while evolving wave fields cause time‐dependent phase shifts in “paw‐tracks.” All the predicted signatures have been confirmed by 5 years of Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft data and numerical simulations. These results allow us to better understand the interactions between ULF waves and thermal ion species in global magnetospheric dynamics. Ultralow frequency (ULF) waves are widely distributed magnetospheric waves that can efficiently accelerate particles and play important roles in geomagnetic activities. Various patterns of ULF wave‐particle interactions have been investigated in detail near the Earth. However, near the dayside boundary of the magnetosphere, the geomagnetic field changes slightly due to solar wind compression. Consequently, the interaction between ULF waves and particles is modified in this region. This study analyzes how the pattern of ULF wave‐particle interactions varies near the dayside boundary of the magnetosphere. We find the compression of the magnetic field, particle motion and ULF wave evolution change the observational signatures of ULF wave‐particle interactions in the region of interest. The results help us better understand the energy transport from the solar wind to the magnetosphere and the role of ULF waves in magnetospheric dynamics.
