Abstract:Magnetic reconnection, a fundamental plasma process, releases magnetic energy and converts it to particle energy, by accelerating and heating ions and electrons. This energy conversion plays an important role in the Earth's magnetotail. A two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation is performed to study such a conversion in a magnetotail topology, one with a nonzero Bz, and the energy conversion is found to be more efficient in the earthward outflow than in the tailward outflow. Such earthward–tailward asymmetry is manifested not only in j·E but also in Poynting flux, Hall electromagnetic fields, bulk kinetic energy flux, enthalpy flux, heat flux, bulk acceleration, heating, and suprathermal particle energization, all of which are more prevalent on the earthward side. Such asymmetries are consistent with spacecraft observations reported in the literature. Our study shows that in the magnetotail, most of the energy converted by reconnection flows predominantly toward the Earth and has the potential of being geoeffective, rather than being expelled to the solar wind by the tailward flow. The energy conversion asymmetry arises from the presence of the non-zero normal magnetic field, the stronger lobe magnetic field, and the stronger cross-tail current earthward of the reconnection site in the pre-reconnecting thin current sheet.

Abstract:Properties of magnetic reconnection in Earth's magnetotail are determined by prereconnection current sheet characteristics. Although spacecraft observations have revealed that the spatial profiles of two important parameters, density and temperature, across the prereconnection magnetotail current sheet are inhomogeneous, the effects of the inhomogeneities on reconnection processes have received insufficient attention. Using Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorm (THEMIS) and Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, and Electrodynamics of Moon's Interaction with the Sun (ARTEMIS) observations, we show that the inhomogeneities are ubiquitous throughout the magnetotail. Using particle‐in‐cell simulations, we demonstrate that strong density inhomogeneity increases magnetotail reconnection rate, and strong temperature inhomogeneity further increases reconnection outflow speed (although reconnection rate does not change significantly). Overall, these inhomogeneities expedite energy conversion efficiency and secondary plasmoid formation during reconnection. As the current sheet density and temperature characteristics vary considerably with geocentric distance and time under different geospace conditions, a large variety of reconnection and postreconnection dynamics results from this dependence.

Two-dimensional Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection with Initial Asymmetric Density Distribution

Abstract:Collisionless magnetic reconnections with different initial temperature gradients across the current sheet are studied through two-dimensional Darwin Particle-in-cell simulations. Due to asymmetric properties of the temperature and density, it is found that the plasma flow, electric field, and magnetic field structures as well as the reconnection dynamical process exhibit significant differences from that in the symmetric case. Through the case studies, the results can be concluded: (1) In the asymmetric cases, electrons drift from the high density region to the low density region, which leads to form a current loop along the saperatrix in out-flow region; (2) Intense charge separation appears near the edge of the magnetic island in the high temperature and low density region and results in a large perpendicular electric field structure. The amplitude and the scale of the electric field are linearly proportional and inverse to the temperature gradient, respectively, For the case T-m/T-s = 5, where T-m and T-s represent the temperature in magnetospheric side and magnetosheath side respectively, the amplitude of E-z will be 0.71 and the scope is of the same order of the electron inertial length d(e), which are in good agreement with the observations (3) the reconnection rate will decrease with increase of the temperature ratio.

Abstract:The factors controlling asymmetric reconnection and the role of the cold plasma population in the reconnection process are two outstanding questions. We present a case study of multipoint Cluster observations demonstrating that the separatrix and flow boundary angles are greater on the magnetosheath than on the magnetospheric side of the magnetopause, probably due to the stronger density than magnetic field asymmetry at this boundary. The motion of cold plasmaspheric ions entering the reconnection region differs from that of warmer magnetosheath and magnetospheric ions. In contrast to the warmer ions, which are probably accelerated by reconnection in the diffusion region near the subsolar magnetopause, the colder ions are simply entrained by E×B drifts at high latitudes on the recently reconnected magnetic field lines. This indicates that plasmaspheric ions can sometimes play only a very limited role in asymmetric reconnection, in contrast to previous simulation studies. Three cold ion populations (probably H+, He+, and O+) appear in the energy spectrum, consistent with ion acceleration to a common velocity.
Contribution of Patchy Reconnection to the Ion-to-electron Temperature Ratio in the Earth's Magnetotail

Abstract:The ion-to-electron temperature ratio is a good indicator of the processes involved in the plasma sheet. Observations have suggested that patchy reconnection and the resulting earthward bursty bulk flows (BBFs) transport may be involved in causing the lower temperature ratios at smaller radial distances during southward IMF periods. In this paper, we estimate theoretically how a patchy magnetic reconnection electric field can accelerate ions and electrons differently. If both ions and electrons are non-adiabatically accelerated only once within each reconnection, the temperature ratio would be preserved. However, when reconnection occurs closer to the Earth where magnetic field lines are shorter, particles mirrored back from the ionosphere can cross the reconnection region more than once within one reconnection; and electrons, moving faster than ions, can have more crossings than do ions, leading to electrons being accelerated more than ions. Thus as particles are transported from tail to the near-Earth by BBFs through multiple reconnection, electrons should be accelerated by the reconnection electric field more times than are ions, which can explain the lower temperature ratios observed closer to the Earth.
Preservation and Variation of Ion-to-electron Temperature Ratio in the Plasma Sheet in Geo-Magnetotail

Abstract:The ion-to-electron temperature ratio is a good indicator of the processes involved in solar wind plasma entering and being transported inside Earth’s plasma sheet. In this study, we have demonstrated that patchy magnetic reconnection has the potential to preserve the ion-to-electron temperature ratio under certain conditions. If the charged particles are non-adiabatically accelerated no more than once in a single reconnection, the temperature ratio would be preserved; on the other hand, this ratio would not be preserved if they are accelerated multiple times. Consequently, under a northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) condition, the reconnection in the nonlinear phase of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability is the dominant process for solar-originated plasma entering the Earth’s magnetosphere, and the ion-to-electron temperature ratio is preserved inside the plasma sheet. When the direction of the IMF is southward, the reflection of electrons from the magnetic mirror point, and subsequent multiple non-adiabatic accelerations at the reconnection site, are the primary reasons for the observed low ion-to-electron temperature ratio close to the Earth at midnight. While reconnections that occur in the night-side far tail might preserve the ratio, turbulence on the boundaries of the bursty bulk flows (BBFs) could change the ratio in the far tail through the violation of the frozen-in condition of the ions. The plateau in the contour of the calculated ion-to-electron temperature ratio in the down tail distance between 40 and 60 Earth radii may explain the strong correlation between the ion and electron temperatures in the outer central plasma sheet, which has not been clearly understood till date.
Multispacecraft Observation of Electron Pitch Angle Distributions in Magnetotail Reconnection

Abstract:In this paper, we present Cluster observations of a magnetotail reconnection event without the presence of an obvious guide magnetic field and analyze electron pitch angle distributions in the vicinity of the X line and the outflow region, respectively. In the vicinity of the X line, at lower energies the distributions are highly anisotropic (field‐aligned bidirectional anisotropic), while at higher energies, the electrons are observed to flow away from the X line along the magnetic field lines. The electron distributions change largely in the outflow region. At the edge of the outflow region, at lower energies, the electrons flow toward the X line, while the electrons at higher energies are directed away from the X line. When the satellites approach the center of the current sheet, at lower energies, the electrons have field‐aligned bidirectional distributions, while at higher energies, the electron distributions are isotropic. The generation mechanisms of such distributions are explained by following typical electron trajectories in the electric and magnetic fields of magnetic reconnection, which are obtained in two‐dimensional particle‐in‐cell simulations. It is shown that the observed high‐energy electrons directed away from the X line both in the vicinity of the X line and in the outflow region are due to the acceleration by the reconnection electric field near the X line, and the field‐aligned bidirectional distributions at lower energies are caused by the effects of the magnetic mirror in the reconnection site. The isotropic distributions at higher energies in the outflow region are the results of the electron stochastic motions when their gyroradii are comparable to the curvature radii of the magnetic field lines.

Abstract:Using data from NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission captured in a reconnection inflow on the magnetospheric side of Earth's dayside magnetopause, we find a region where the heat flux density gradient term balances the parallel compression term in the electron parallel temperature equation. Combining these observations with analysis of the generalized fluid equations indicates that such a behavior represents a quasi‐isothermal region, where cold magnetosheath beams that have transported across the magnetopause introduce non‐zero gradients in parallel heat flux density. This region should prevail near dayside reconnection X‐lines in inflows on the magnetospheric side due to the formation of mixed electron distributions and increased parallel temperatures that arise from three‐dimensional boundary dynamics.

Impact of the Out-of-Plane Flow Shear on Magnetic Reconnection at the Flanks of Earth's Magnetopause

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection changes the magnetic field topology and facilitates the energy and particle exchange at magnetospheric boundaries such as the Earth's magnetopause. The flow shear perpendicular to the reconnecting plane prevails at the flank magnetopause under southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions. However, the effect of the out-of-plane flow shear on asymmetric reconnection is an open question. In this study, we utilize kinetic simulations to investigate the impact of the out-of-plane flow shear on asymmetric reconnection. By systematically varying the flow shear strength, we analyze the flow shear effects on the reconnection rate, the diffusion region structure, and the energy conversion rate. We find that the reconnection rate increases with the upstream out-of-plane flow shear, and for the same upstream conditions, it is higher at the dusk side than at the dawn side. The diffusion region is squeezed in the outflow direction due to magnetic pressure which is proportional to the square of the Alfvén Mach number of the shear flow. The out-of-plane flow shear increases the energy conversion rate J \cdot E', and for the same upstream conditions, the magnitude of J \cdot E' is larger at the dusk side than at the dawn side. This study reveals that out-of-plane flow shear not only enhances the reconnection rate but also significantly boosts energy conversion, with more pronounced effects on the dusk-side flank than on the dawn-side flank. These insights pave the way for better understanding the solar wind-magnetosphere interactions.

Abstract:Magnetic field line reconnection is a universal plasma process responsible for the magnetic field topology change and magnetic field energy dissipation into charged particle heating and acceleration. In many systems, the conditions leading to the magnetic reconnection are determined by the pre-reconnection configuration of a thin layer with intense currents -- otherwise known as the thin current sheet. In this study we investigate two such systems: Earth's magnetotail and helmet streamers in the solar corona. The pre-reconnection current sheet evolution has been intensely studied in the magnetotail, where in-situ spacecraft observations are available; but helmet streamer current sheets studies are fewer, due to lack of in-situ observations -- they are mostly investigated with numerical simulations and information that can be surmised from remote sensing instrumentation. Both systems exhibit qualitatively the same behavior, despite their largely different Mach numbers, much higher at the solar corona than at the magnetotail. Comparison of spacecraft data (from the magnetotail) with numerical simulations (for helmet streamers) shows that the pre-reconnection current sheet thinning, for both cases, is primarily controlled by plasma pressure gradients. Scaling laws of the current density, magnetic field, and pressure gradients are the same for both systems. We discuss how magnetotail observations and kinetic simulations can be utilized to improve our understanding and modeling of the helmet streamer current sheets.

Suppression of Reconnection in Polarized, Thin Magnetotail Current Sheets: 2D Simulations and Implications

Abstract:Many in-situ spacecraft observations have demonstrated that magnetic reconnection in the Earth's magnetotail is largely controlled by the pre-reconnection current sheet configuration. One of the most important thin current sheet characteristics is the preponderance of electron currents driven by strong polarized electric fields, which are commonly observed in the Earth's magnetotail well before the reconnection. We use particle-in-cell simulations to investigate magnetic reconnection in the 2D magnetotail current sheet with a finite magnetic field component normal to the current sheet and with the current sheet polarization. Under the same external driving conditions, reconnection in a polarized current sheet is shown to occur at a lower rate than in a nonpolarized current sheet. The reconnection rate in a polarized current sheet decreases linearly as the electron current's contribution to the cross-tail current increases. In simulations with lower background temperature the reconnection electric field is higher. We demonstrate that after reconnection in such a polarized current sheet, the outflow energy flux is mostly in the form of ion enthalpy flux, followed by electron enthalpy flux, Poynting flux, ion kinetic energy flux and electron kinetic energy flux. These findings are consistent with spacecraft observations. Because current sheet polarization is not uniform along the magnetotail, our results suggest that it may slow down reconnection in the most polarized near-Earth magnetotail and thereby move the location of reconnection onset downtail.
Electron‐Only Reconnection As a Transition from Quiet Current Sheet to Standard Reconnection in Earth's Magnetotail: Particle‐In‐Cell Simulation and Application to MMS Data

Abstract:Standard magnetic reconnection couples with both electron- and ion dynamics. Recently, a new type of magnetic reconnection, electron-only reconnection without the coupling of ion dynamics, has been observed in space. Using a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation, we show that in the externally-driven magnetotail, electron-only reconnection is a transition from quiet current sheet to standard reconnection. We find that (a) energy conversion j center dot E' is around zero in quiet current sheet but nonzero in electron-only reconnection, and (b) ion temperature does not change across electron-only reconnection but peaks at the center of standard reconnection. These two differences can be used as criteria to distinguish magnetotail electron-only reconnection from quiet current sheet and standard reconnection, respectively. Based on the two criteria, we justify that the MMS 17 June 2017 event is a magnetotail electron-only reconnection event. Plain Language Summary The Earth has a long stretched magnetic tail, that is, magnetotail, formed by the interaction between the geomagnetic field and the plasma (ions and electrons) wind originated from the Sun. At the center of the magnetotail, there is a current sheet flanked by two different topologies of magnetic field lines. Magnetic reconnection, a fundamental plasma process during which magnetic field line topologies change, can occur in this magnetotail current sheet. Based on computer simulations in the past 20 years, a standard reconnection model with both ion and electron dynamics has been established, which can well describe magnetic reconnection observed in the magnetotail. Recently, a new type of reconnection with solely electron dynamics has been observed to occur in the magnetotail. Here using computer simulations, we show that electron-only reconnection in the magnetotail is a transition from magnetotail current sheet to standard reconnection. Based on the simulation results, we give two criteria for identification of electron-only reconnection in spacecraft observations in the magnetotail, using which we justify that the MMS 17 June 2017 event is a magnetotail electron-only reconnection event.

Abstract:The objective of the paper is to asses the specific spectral scaling properties of magnetic reconnection associated fluctuations/turbulence at the earthward and tailward outflow regions observed simultaneously by the Cluster and Double Star (TC‐2) spacecraft on 26 September 2005. Systematic comparisons of spectral characteristics, including variance anisotropy and scale‐dependent spectral anisotropy features in wave vector space were possible due to the well‐documented reconnection events, occurring between the positions of Cluster (X = −14–16 Re) and TC‐2 (X = −6.6 Re). Another factor of key importance is that the magnetometers on the spacecraft are similar. The comparisons provide further evidence for asymmetry of physical processes in earthward/tailward reconnection outflow regions. Variance anisotropy and spectral anisotropy angles estimated from the multiscale magnetic fluctuations in the tailward outflow region show features which are characteristic for magnetohydrodynamic cascading turbulence in the presence of a local mean magnetic field. The multiscale magnetic fluctuations in the earthward outflow region are not only exhibiting more power, lack of variance, and scale‐dependent anisotropies but also are having larger anisotropy angles. In this region the magnetic field is more dipolar and the main processes driving turbulence are flow breaking/mixing, perhaps combined with turbulence ageing and noncascade‐related multiscale energy sources.
Energy Dissipation in Electron-only Reconnection

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in space and astrophysical plasmas that converts magnetic energy to particle energy. Recently, a novel kind of reconnection, called electron-only reconnection, has been observed in Earth's magnetosheath plasma. A defining characteristic of electron-only reconnection is that electron jets are observed but ion jets are absent. This is in contrast with traditional ion-coupled reconnection, where both ions and electrons exhibit outflowing velocity jets. Findings from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission observations and particle-in-cell simulations show clear signatures of electron heating in electron-only reconnection events, while ions are not heated or cooled in these events. This result is unlike ion-coupled reconnection, where both ions and electrons are heated to varying degrees. The ratio of electron to ion dissipation increases with the local magnetic curvature, indicating that the partition of heat into ions and electrons is dependent on the current-sheet thickness.

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection and plasma turbulence are ubiquitous and key processes in the Universe. These two processes are suggested to be intrinsically related: magnetic reconnection can develop turbulence, and, in turn, turbulence can influence or excite magnetic reconnection. In this study, we report a rare and unique electron diffusion region (EDR) observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission in the Earth's magnetotail with significantly enhanced energetic particle fluxes. The EDR is in a region of strong turbulence within which the plasma density is dramatically depleted. We present three salient features. (1) Despite the turbulence, the EDR behaves nearly the same as that in 2D quasi-planar reconnection; the observations suggest that magnetic reconnection continues for several minutes. (2) The observed reconnection electric field and inferred energy transport are exceptionally large. However, the aspect ratio of the EDR (one definition of reconnection rate) is fairly typical. Instead, extraordinarily large-amplitude Hall electric fields appear to enable the strong energy transport. (3) We hypothesize that the high-energy transport rate, density depletion, and the strong particle acceleration are related to a near-runaway effect, which is due to the combination of low-plasma-density inflow (from lobes) and possible positive feedback between turbulence and reconnection. The detailed study on this EDR gives insight into the interplay between reconnection and turbulence, and the possible near-runaway effect, which may play an important role in other particle acceleration in astrophysical plasma.

Abstract:Observations made by a unique constellation of Cluster (at 14-16 R-E), TC2, Goes10, and LANL spacecraft (near 6.6 R-E) have allowed us to study the details of three reconnection events in the middle of a thick plasma sheet with the reconnection X-line located unusually close to Earth (10-12 R-E). We use mapping along field lines with magnetospheric models adapted to magnetic field observations to confirm that the reconnection region mapped onto localized auroral brightenings. Using simultaneous observations in the inflow and outflow regions, we describe an encounter with a localized tailward Alfvenic jet produced by a short isolated reconnection pulse. A good correlation between intense E and ion [BV] indicates that the concurrent strong turbulence could not destroy the frozen-in ion behavior in the reconnection outflow. We find that a steady quadrupole-like distribution of the magnetic By component in the turbulent reconnection outflow extended far beyond the ion diffusion region and existed for several minutes. We demonstrate an apparent V-x flow reversal, formed owing to the reappearance (switch-on) of reconnection at another location, rather than to a continuous motion of the active X-line. Using the Liouville mapping technique, we show that the acceleration of outflow electrons, after the particles passed a potential drop of 180 V, is consistent with Fermi/betatron acceleration. We also suggest another interpretation of the energetic particle bursts at the onsets, to emphasize the role of seed population and explain the sudden burst as a consequence of changing magnetic topology.
Ion Energization and Thermalization in Magnetic Reconnection Exhaust Region in the Solar Wind

Abstract:Plasma energization and thermalization in magnetic reconnection is an important topic in astrophysical studies. We select two magnetic reconnection exhausts encountered by Solar Orbiter and analyze the associated ion heating in the kinetic regime. Both cases feature asymmetric plasma merging in the exhaust and anisotropic heating. For a quantitative investigation of the associated complex velocity-space structures, we adopt a three-dimensional Hermite representation of the proton velocity distribution function to produce the distribution of Hermite moments. We also derive the enstrophy and Hermite spectra to analyze the free energy conversion and transfer in phase space. We find a depletion of Hermite power at small m (corresponding to large-scale structures in velocity space) inside the reconnection exhaust region, concurrent with enhanced proton temperature and decreased enstrophy. Furthermore, the slopes of the 1D time-averaged parallel Hermite spectra are lower inside the exhaust and consistent with the effect of phase mixing that creates small fluctuations in velocity space. These fluctuations store free energy at higher m and are smoothed by weak collisionality, leading to irreversible thermalization. We also suggest that the perpendicular heating may happen via perpendicular phase mixing resulting from finite Larmor radius effects around the exhaust boundary.
