Abstract:Meng Yun,a descendant of Lesser Sage Mencius, is a poetess in the early Ming dynasty. But her background, life story and writing remain unknown, and even many famous dictionaries do not contain her entry.Meng Chengshun is one of the famous dramatists in the late Ming dynasty, and is her younger generation in the same clan in the same native place. Meng Chengshun printed Meng Yun’s Bailouyin (A Collection of Poems at Cypress Tower), to which he wrote a preface. This preface, however, is not included in Collected Works of Meng Chengshun published in June 2006. Meng Chengshun wrote the drama entitled Zhenwenji (Story of A Chaste Unmarried Poetess), which tells of an unmarried late-Song poetess Zhang Yuniang living in Songyang County who preserved chastity for her dead fianc . Since we learn that Meng Yun had the same story as Zhang Yuniang, we have adequate reasons to believe that Meng Yun’s experience had had some influence on his writing of Zhenwenji. This is exactly what our previous researcher has overlooked. This paper does not agree with Prof. Xu Shuofang on his argument that Zhenwenji was written in the 13th—14th years of the reign of Emperor Shunzhi of the Qing dynasty (1657—1658).
