Abstract:Halide perovskite and perovskite-like materials have emerged as very promising optoelectronic materials in the field of X-ray detection, including both direct methods and indirect methods. Due to their remarkable performances, such as strong X-ray stopping capacity and cost-effective manufacturing, the research advances of perovskite X-ray detection have achieved significant progress and attracted lots of attention worldwide. Meanwhile, perovskite based X-ray imaging systems have been successfully demonstrated as well. In this review, we will firstly introduce some fundamental principles of X-ray detection and imaging, summarize the advances of X-ray detection and imaging based on novel metal halide semiconductors and scintillators, and finally put forward some issues and outlooks.

Abstract:Scintillator is a unique class of luminescent materials, which is extensively used in many fields such as nondestructive testing, medical imaging, space probes, etc. Compared with the disadvantages of traditional scintillator materials which have high cost, are fragile, have long response time and low spatial resolution disadvantages, metal halide perovskites are considered to be the most potential scintillator materials in X‐ray detection and medical imaging due to their preeminent performance of radiative absorption, carrier transportation, high photoluminescence, high atomic number (Z), high‐quality elements, and low‐temperature solution process. However, this material has blemishes such as poor stability and low luminous efficiency in the application of X‐ray detection. In recent years, many start‐of‐art and momentous works have been carried out to solve these problems. Herein, it is intended to summarize the progress of perovskite scintillators to date and propose a scheme for the development of their bottlenecks. First, the physical phenomena and main parameters of scintillators are summarized. Second, the classification of scintillator materials and their application of perovskite scintillators are outlined. Finally, the issues that remain in the application of perovskite scintillators and provide a simple outlook for possible directions in future applications are discussed.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic halide perovskites, which integrate organic and inorganic elements, hold great potential for direct X-ray detection. Economical production methods, such as slurry blade coating, enable the manufacture of large-area X-ray detectors based on these materials. However, numerous pores and pinholes in the resulting polycrystalline thick films lead to detrimental effects like non-radiative recombination and ion migration, compromising detection performance. To overcome this challenge, we promote the growth of oriented crystal domains to assist in the fabrication of high-quality and thick perovskite X-ray photoconductor films. This approach leverages the synergistic effects of enhanced hydrogen bonding and A-site incorporation by carefully controlling the amount of guanidinium iodide. As a result, the film exhibits larger grains and fewer grain boundaries, leading to lower trap state densities and a higher carrier mobility-lifetime product. The resulting detector achieves a sensitivity of 7.6 × 10 4 μC Gy air −1 cm −2 and a limit of detection of 28 nGy air s −1 . The devices also demonstrate improved stability by effectively eliminating ion migration pathways. This study proposes a methodological strategy for producing high-quality polycrystalline thick films, pivotal for advancing large-area flat-panel X-ray detection systems.

Abstract:Abstract Halide lead perovskites have attracted increasing attention in recent years for ionizing radiation detection due to their strong stopping power, defect-tolerance, large mobility-lifetime ( μτ ) product, tunable bandgap and simple single crystal growth from low-cost solution processes. In this review, we start with the requirement of material properties for high performance ionizing radiation detection based on direct detection mechanisms for applications in X-ray imaging and γ-ray energy spectroscopy. By comparing the performances of halide perovskites radiation detectors with current state-of-the-art ionizing radiation detectors, we show the promising features and challenges of halide perovskites as promising radiation detectors.

Abstract:Medical X-ray computed tomography requires imaging at a low dose rate and in a large area. Halide perovskites have shown high potential for X-ray detection, but a pressing challenge is the current lack of low-cost methods for large-scale fabrication of high-quality thick perovskite films. Here we demonstrate and elucidate an aerosol-liquid-solid process to enable continuous growth of uniform halide perovskite films at low temperature over a large area of 100 cm2, which are vertically monolithic, and thus beneficial to carrier transport. Direct-conversion X-ray detectors based on the representative CsPbI2Br films in conjunction with a deliberated, interface-engineered C-electrode have realized an unprecedented sensitivity (≥1.48 × 105 μC Gyair−1 cm−2) and a low limit of detection (280 nGyair s−1). We have further demonstrated the high-resolution radiographic imaging capability of these films. These results lay the groundwork for large-scale application of halide perovskites in radiation detectors.

Abstract:Abstract X‐ray radiography, playing a crucial role in the daily life of humans, extends the application landscapes of perovskites. Lead halide perovskites remain superior candidates because of strong X‐ray absorption and effective conversion of X‐ray to visible photons. Unfortunately, the perovskites exhibiting efficient band‐edge emission (3D, quasi‐2D or 2D) usually suffer from severe self‐absorption, while the perovskites showing broadband emission with large stokes shift (0D, 1D or 2D) usually have low quantum yield with long afterglow or poor solution‐processability. Halide‐intercalated perovskites, with incorporated halides in organic layers, exhibit attractive optoelectronic properties due to reduced confinement of excitons, but their development falls far behind due to limited molecular design strategies and wet‐chemistry methods. Here, the use of universal‐wet‐chemistry‐synthesized novel halide‐intercalated perovskites as an efficient X‐ray scintillator for X‐ray imaging is reported. These novel perovskites exhibit superior luminescence by exploiting both free and self‐trapped excitons via halide intercalation. Accordingly, such perovskite scintillators present higher radioluminescence performance compared with conventional perovskite scintillators through enhanced radiative recombination and suppressed self‐absorption simultaneously. With such a scintillator screen, high‐performance X‐ray imaging is demonstrated. The results not only represent a universal synthesis route for the development of perovskites, but also provide valuable guidance for high‐performance X‐ray radiography.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have been intensively studied over the past years due to their attractive electronic, optical and optoelectronic properties. In spite of the phenomenally high solar-conversion efficiency achieved with perovskites, their adverse instability remains the key obstacle restricting their wider applications. These ionic crystals can be affected by many factors, such as varied temperatures, humid air, polar solvents, and electron-withdrawing/donating gases. However, under certain controlled conditions, changes in perovskite structures/compositions via, for example, phase transitions, hydration/dehydration, gas adsorption/desorption, and ion intercalation/decalation, can all be reversed, suggesting their great potential for sensing applications. In this contribution, we first overview recent investigations and mechanistic studies on the stability of metal halide perovskites under various environmental conditions. Then, we highlight the recent attempts to apply perovskites for the detection of temperature change, humidity, gases, solvents and ions. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future opportunities for developing sensing systems based on metal halide perovskites.

Abstract:The high cost and difficulty of fabricating high-quality, thick, large-area X-ray absorbers limit their widespread applications in flat-panel direct hard X-ray imaging. Then it comes to the recently rising halide perovskites, which show large carrier mobility and lifetime, contain high atomic number elements and are solution processible, making them ideal for large-area direct hard X-ray imaging. Over the past few years, direct X-ray detectors based on a variety of perovskites have been developed, showing impressive progress in achieving high sensitivity and low detection limit. Alongside the developments, the underlying correlations between the intrinsic properties of the perovskites and their X-ray detection performance have been intensively studied, providing valuable information to tackle the remaining challenges, such as large dark current, baseline drifting and so forth. However, it is surprising to find that there have been no efforts to bring together a comprehensive review and comparative analysis on these previous research endeavors, and some general principles and guidelines of engineering the perovskites toward advanced X-ray detectors have yet to be creamed off. Here, recent advances in engineering perovskites for direct X-ray detection are reviewed in the hope of providing fundamental understanding of this fast-developing field. First, the operation principles of direct X-ray detectors targeting flat-panel X-ray imaging will be introduced, particularly relevant to perovskite materials. Then, recent innovative works regarding the preparation and manipulation of single-crystalline and poly-crystalline perovskites are discussed in detail, through which specific effects of the intrinsic properties of the perovskite upon X-ray detection are highlighted. This is followed by a summary of the review and outlook of future directions.
Synergistic strain engineering of perovskite single crystals for highly stable and sensitive X-ray detectors with low-bias imaging and monitoring

Abstract:Although three-dimensional metal halide perovskite (ABX 3 ) single crystals are promising next-generation materials for radiation detection, state-of-the-art perovskite X-ray detectors include methylammonium as A-site cations, limiting the operational stability. Previous efforts to improve the stability using formamidinium–caesium-alloyed A-site cations usually sacrifice the detection performance because of high trap densities. Here we successfully solve this trade-off between stability and detection performance by synergistic composition engineering, where we include A-site alloys to decrease the trap density and B-site dopants to release the microstrain induced by A-site alloying. As such, we develop high-performance perovskite X-ray detectors with excellent stability. Our X-ray detectors exhibit high sensitivity of (2.6 ± 0.1) × 10 4 μC Gy air −1 cm −2 under 1 V cm −1 and ultralow limit of detection of 7.09 nGy air s −1 . In addition, they feature long-term operational stability over half a year and impressive thermal stability up to 125 °C. We further demonstrate the promise of our perovskite X-ray detectors for low-bias portable applications with high-quality X-ray imaging and monitoring prototypes.

Abstract:Perovskite nanocrystals act as scintillators under X‐ray illumination with different conversion yield, stability, or decay times and outperform commercial materials, depending on their composition, host matrix, and luminescence process. Besides the lead halide perovskites, there are lead‐free alternatives providing self‐trapped exciton emission, reducing self‐absorption. Both will possibly contribute to the bright future of perovskite nanocrystals in X‐ray applications. Metal halide perovskites are revolutionizing X‐ray detection through a combination of low cost, solution processing, favorable optoelectronic properties, and high stopping power for high‐energy ionizing radiation. While perovskite single crystals and polycrystalline wafers are considered direct X‐ray converters, most medical X‐ray applications are based on scintillators that shift high‐energy radiation into the visible. Several materials are on the market, but demonstrations based on CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, possibly embedded in a matrix material or combined with organic molecules as luminescent species, highlight their competitiveness with established scintillators in terms of radioluminescence yield and transient behavior. Major hurdles that perovskite nanocrystal scintillators must overcome are environmental stability and toxicity. While there are still few examples of high‐performance lead‐free perovskite nanocrystal scintillators, microcrystalline perovskites are emerging with promising properties, reduced toxicity, and significant Stokes shifts to avoid reabsorption of emission in thick films. Thus, the near future of perovskite nanocrystal scintillator materials will primarily be the adoption of recipes for materials with proven properties in microcrystalline form. The nanocrystal colloidal solutions will facilitate the large‐scale printing of homogeneous and scattering‐free films to obtain high contrast and spatial resolution X‐ray images by scintillation.

Halide Perovskites and Their Derivatives for Efficient, High-Resolution Direct Radiation Detection: Design Strategies and Applications

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed a rapid rise in the performance of optoelectronic devices based on lead-halide perovskites (LHPs). The large mobility-lifetime products and defect tolerance of these materials, essential for optoelectronics, also make them well-suited for radiation detectors, especially given the heavy elements present, which is essential for strong X-ray and γ-ray attenuation. Over the past decade, LHP thick films, wafers, and single crystals have given rise to direct radiation detectors that have outperformed incumbent technologies in terms of sensitivity (reported values up to 3.5 × 106 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 ), limit of detection (directly measured values down to 1.5 nGyair s-1 ), along with competitive energy and imaging resolution at room temperature. At the same time, lead-free perovskite-inspired materials (e.g., methylammonium bismuth iodide), which have underperformed in solar cells, have recently matched and, in some areas (e.g., in polarization stability), surpassed the performance of LHP detectors. These advances open up opportunities to achieve devices for safer medical imaging, as well as more effective non-invasive analysis for security, nuclear safety, or product inspection applications. Herein, the principles behind the rapid rises in performance of LHP and perovskite-inspired material detectors, and how their properties and performance link with critical applications in non-invasive diagnostics are discussed. The key strategies to engineer the performance of these materials, and the important challenges to overcome to commercialize these new technologies are also discussed.

Abstract:A universal vapor‐phase synthesis method is developed to realize the growth of various halide perovskites (e.g., MAPbBr3, FAPbBr3, MAPbI3, FAPbI3, and Cs4PbI6) with lateral size up to 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm and long‐term stability over 180 days under air‐environment. The resultant perovskite photodetectors exhibit attractive optoelectronic properties such as superior responsivity, ultrafast response time, and outstanding photoelectric image sensing capability. Ultrathin halide perovskites have drawn tremendous attention in nano‐/micro‐optoelectronic devices due to their fascinating performance and capability for chip integration. Unfortunately, it is highly challenging to obtain large‐scale and chronically stable ultrathin halide perovskites for practical application. Herein, the universal low‐temperature vapor‐phase synthesis of ultrathin perovskite family materials with thickness down to 2D level and lateral size up to 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm is reported by developing a self‐limiting chemical vapor deposition strategy. The perovskite products are found to exhibit superior stability over 180 days under an air environment. The resultant photodetectors demonstrate charming optoelectronic properties such as superior responsivity (3.7 × 103 A W−1), ultrafast response time (<10 μs), and outstanding low‐level light image sensing capability. This universal perovskite synthesis strategy offers great potential for practical applications of halide perovskites in future nano‐/micro‐optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Sensitive and reliable X-ray detectors are essential for medical radiography, industrial inspection and security screening. Lowering the radiation dose allows reduced health risks and increased frequency and fidelity of diagnostic technologies for earlier detection of disease and its recurrence. Three-dimensional (3D) organic–inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskites are promising for direct X-ray detection – they show improved sensitivity compared to conventional X-ray detectors. However, their high and unstable dark current, caused by ion migration and high dark carrier concentration in the 3D hybrid perovskites, limits their performance and long-term operation stability. Here we report ultrasensitive, stable X-ray detectors made using zero-dimensional (0D) methylammonium bismuth iodide perovskite (MA3Bi2I9) single crystals. The 0D crystal structure leads to a high activation energy (Ea) for ion migration (0.46 eV) and is also accompanied by a low dark carrier concentration (∼ 106 cm−3). The X-ray detectors exhibit sensitivity of 10,620 μC Gyair−1 cm−2, a limit of detection (LoD) of 0.62 nGyair s−1, and stable operation even under high applied biases; no deterioration in detection performance was observed following sensing of an integrated X-ray irradiation dose of ∼23,800 mGyair, equivalent to > 200,000 times the dose required for a single commercial X-ray chest radiograph. Regulating the ion migration channels and decreasing the dark carrier concentration in perovskites provide routes for stable and ultrasensitive X-ray detectors.

Abstract:Radiation detection, converting high-energy (keV) photons to lower energy (1.7–3 eV) photons, is of great importance in various fields, including medical diagnostics, quality inspection, and security checking. High-resolution scintillation imaging based on lead halide perovskite nanocrystals is very promising for these applications owing to their high absorption cross-section for x-rays, fast decay time, room temperature fabrication, tunable bandgap, low trap density, and near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield. Although considerable achievements have been made, challenges remain for future industrialization. Herein, the progress of scintillators based on lead halide perovskite nanocrystals is reviewed, including their working mechanisms, key parameters, and the relationship between growth conditions and performance. An overview of the current state in this promising research area toward high-performance x-ray scintillators is provided, along with a look at some of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Abstract:A major thrust of medical X-ray imaging is to minimize the X-ray dose acquired by the patient, down to single-photon sensitivity. Such characteristics have been demonstrated with only a few direct-detection semiconductor materials such as CdTe and Si; nonetheless, their industrial deployment in medical diagnostics is still impeded by elaborate and costly fabrication processes. Hybrid lead halide perovskites can be a viable alternative owing to their facile solution growth. However, hybrid perovskites are unstable under high-field biasing in X-ray detectors, owing to structural lability and mixed electronic–ionic conductivity. Here we show that both single-photon-counting and long-term stable performance of perovskite X-ray detectors are attained in the photovoltaic mode of operation at zero-voltage bias, employing thick and uniform methylammonium lead iodide single-crystal films (up to 300 μm) and solution directly grown on hole-transporting electrodes. The operational device stability exceeded one year. Detection efficiency of 88% and noise-equivalent dose of 90 pGy air are obtained with 18 keV X-rays, allowing single-photon-sensitive, low-dose and energy-resolved X-ray imaging. Array detectors demonstrate high spatial resolution up to 11 lp mm −1 . These findings pave the path for the implementation of hybrid perovskites in low-cost, low-dose commercial detector arrays for X-ray imaging.

Abstract:Halide perovskites are a novel class of semiconductors that have attracted great interest in recent decades due to their peculiar properties of interest for optoelectronics. In fact, their use ranges from the field of sensors and light emitters to ionizing radiation detectors. Since 2015, ionizing radiation detectors exploiting perovskite films as active media have been developed. Recently, it has also been demonstrated that such devices can be suitable for medical and diagnostic applications. This review collects most of the recent and innovative publications regarding solid-state devices for the detection of X-rays, neutrons, and protons based on perovskite thin and thick films in order to show that this type of material can be used to design a new generation of devices and sensors. Thin and thick films of halide perovskites are indeed excellent candidates for low-cost and large-area device applications, where the film morphology allows the implementation on flexible devices, which is a cutting-edge topic in the sensor sector.

Abstract:Lead‐free perovskites have fascinated significant research attention for direct X‐ray detection. This review describes the current research progress in the synthesis methods of lead‐free perovskites, fundamental principles, and development of applications of X‐ray detectors. In addition, the challenge and outlook for developing high‐performance lead‐free perovskite X‐ray detectors are also discussed. Lead halide perovskites have made remarkable progress in the field of radiation detection owing to the excellent and unique optoelectronic properties. However, the instability and the toxicity of lead‐based perovskites have greatly hindered its practical applications. Alternatively, lead‐free perovskites with high stability and environmental friendliness thus have fascinated significant research attention for direct X‐ray detection. In this review, the current research progress of X‐ray detectors based on lead‐free halide perovskites is focused. First, the synthesis methods of lead‐free perovskites including single crystals and films are discussed. In addition, the properties of these materials and the detectors, which can provide a better understanding and designing satisfactory devices are also presented. Finally, the challenge and outlook for developing high‐performance lead‐free perovskite X‐ray detectors are also provided.
