Abstract:Volume I came with many exercises, which not only helped the reader to absorb the material, but often also played an educational, ‘Bourbaki-esque’ role by pointing the reader to many interesting results that the authors presumably did not want to put in the main text. This volume also has plenty of exercises, but the prominence of this secondary function depends on the chapter. Abstract:Various aspects of the theory of quantum integrable systems are reviewed. Basic ideas behind the construction of integrable ultralocal and nonultralocal quantum models are explored by exploiting the underlying algebraic structures related to the Yang-Baxter equations. Physical meaning of abstract mathematical notions like universal R-matrix, quantized algebras, Sklyanin algebra, braided algebra, Hopf algebra etc. and the role played by them in integrable systems are highlighted. Systematic construction of quantum integrable lattice as well as field models and their exact excitation spectra are presented through examples. The coordinate and algebraic formulations of the Bethe ansatz are illustrated with comparison, along with the description of nested and functional Bethe ansatzes. The techniques for deriving quantum Hamiltonians from the Lax operators are demonstrated on concrete models. The exposition of this review is kept in a fairly elementary level with emphasis on the physical contents.

Abstract:Graph Theory is still a relatively young subject, and debate still rages on what material constitutes the core results that any introductory text should include. Bollobás has chosen to introduce graph theory - including recent results - in a way that emphasizes the connections between (for example) the Tutte polynomial of a graph, the partition functions of theoretical physics, and the new knot polynomials, all of which are interconnected.On the other hand, graph theory is also rooted strongly in computing science, where it is applied to many different problems; Bollobás's treatment is completely theoretical and does not address these applications. Or, in more practical terms, he is concerned whether a solution exists, rather than asking whether the solution can be computed in a reasonably efficient manner.One of the pleasures of working in graph theory is the abundance of problems available to solve. Unlike many more traditional areas of Mathematics, knowing the core results and proofs is frequently insufficient. Often solving a new problem requires a new approach, or a subtle twist on an existing one, combined with some bare knuckle work. Bollobás emphasizes this in the problems available at the end of each chapter; he includes in total 639 problems, ranging from the reasonably straightforward to the very difficult. I spent time with friends working on these problems, and was intrigued by the variety of the proofs that we came up with.

Abstract:We review the results of several of our papers about the procedure of extension of Hamiltonians, allowing the construction of families of superintegrable systems with non-trivial polynomial first integrals (or symmetry operators) of arbitrarily high degree. In particular, we focus on the geometric structures involved by the procedure: warped manifolds and Riemannian coverings. Examples of superintegrable systems, classical and quantum, with the structure of extended Hamiltonians are anisotropic harmonic oscillators, Kepler-Coulomb, Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz and Post-Winternitz systems.

Abstract:This book introduces key topics on Geometric Invariant Theory, a technique to obtaining quotients in algebraic geometry with a good set of properties, through various examples. It starts from the classical Hilbert classification of binary forms, advancing to the construction of the moduli space of semistable holomorphic vector bundles, and to Hitchin’s theory on Higgs bundles. The relationship between the notion of stability between algebraic, differential and symplectic geometry settings is also covered. Unstable objects in moduli problems -- a result of the construction of moduli spaces -- get specific attention in this work. The notion of the Harder-Narasimhan filtration as a tool to handle them, and its relationship with GIT quotients, provide instigating new calculations in several problems. Applications include a survey of research results on correspondences between Harder-Narasimhan filtrations with the GIT picture and stratifications of the moduli space of Higgs bundles. Graduate students and researchers who want to approach Geometric Invariant Theory in moduli constructions can greatly benefit from this reading, whose key prerequisites are general courses on algebraic geometry and differential geometry.

Abstract:This monograph, written for educational purposes, serves as an introduction to the concept of integrability as it applies to systems of differential equations (both ordinary and partial) as well as to vector-valued fields. The general cases of integrability examined are: path-independence of line integrals of vector fields on the plane and in space; integration of systems of ordinary differential equations by using first integrals; and integrable systems of partial differential equations. Special topics include the integration of analytic functions on the complex plane and some elements from the geometric theory of differential systems. Certain more advanced subjects, such as Lax pairs and Bäcklund transformations, are also discussed.

Abstract:Merleau-Ponty and Contemporary Philosophy is an ambitious collected volume of fourteen chapters, accompanied by an epilogue by Jean-Luc Nancy, in which current Merleau-Ponty scholars together aim to demonstrate the urgent relevance of Merleau-Ponty to contemporary philosophy across a range of fields including ontology, epistemology, anthropology, embodiment, animality, politics, language, aesthetics, and art. Divided into four thematic sections, namely, “Legacies”, “Mind and Nature”, “Politics, Power, and Institution” and “Art and Aesthetics”, this collected volume provides a rich resource for Merleau-Ponty scholars who are interested in novel applications and understudied aspects of his thought. It also opens up Merleau-Ponty’s oeuvre to the general reader, presenting many possible entry-ways into the diversity of his work. In my review of Merleau-Ponty and Contemporary Philosophy, I suggest that each of its thematic sections could have been the subject of a separate volume themselves, and that the volume would then perhaps have not suffered from a number of poorly developed lines of argumentation. But I consider that the inclusion of all these thematically diverse sections in a single volume nonetheless presents a forceful display of the wide-ranging relevance of Merleau-Ponty’s work to contemporary philosophy.

Abstract:The textbook by Doets and van Eijck puts the Haskell programming language systematically to work for presenting a major piece of logic and mathematics. The reader is taken through chapters on basic logic, proof recipes, sets and lists, relations and functions, recursion and co-recursion, the number systems, polynomials and power series, ending with Cantor's infinities. The book uses Haskell for the executable and strongly typed manifestation of various mathematical notions at the level of declarative programming. The book adopts a systematic but relaxed mathematical style (definition, example, exercise, ...); the text is very pleasant to read due to a small amount of anecdotal information, and due to the fact that definitions are fluently integrated in the running text. An important goal of the book is to get the reader acquainted with reasoning about programs.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero with valuation ring $R$, for instance, $K=\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $R=\mathbb{Z}_p$. We prove a general integral geometric formula for $K$-analytic groups and homogeneous $K$-analytic spaces, analogous to the corresponding result over the reals. This generalizes the $p$-adic integral geometric formula for projective spaces recently discovered by Kulkarni and Lerario, e.g., to the setting of Grassmannians. Based on this, we outline the construction of a nonarchimedean probabilistic Schubert Calculus. For this purpose, we characterize the relative position of two subspaces of $K^n$ by a position vector, a nonarchimedean analogue of the notion of principal angles, and we study the probability distribution of the position vector for random uniform subspaces. We then use this to compute the volume of special Schubert varieties over $K$. As a second application of the general integral geometry formula, we initiate the study of random fewnomial systems over nonarchimedean fields, bounding, and in some cases exactly determining, the expected number of zeros of such random systems.
