Abstract:This is a survey paper about moduli spaces that have a natural structure of a (possibly incomplete) locally symmetric variety. We outline the Baily-Borel compactification for such varieties and compare it with the compactifications furnished by techniques in algebraic geometry. These differ in general, but we show that a reconciliation is possible by means of a generalization of the Baily-Borel technique for a class of incomplete locally symmetric varieties. Abstract: We develop a moduli theory of algebraic varieties and pairs of non-negative Kodaira dimension. We define stable minimal models and construct their projective coarse moduli spaces under certain natural conditions. This can be applied to a wide range of moduli problems in algebraic geometry.

Abstract:This survey paper explains how one can attach geometric invariants to semialgebraic sets defined over non-archimedean fields, using the theory of motivic integration of Hrushovski and Kazhdan. It also discusses tropical methods to compute these invariants in concrete cases, as well as an application to refined curve counting, developed in collaboration with Sam Payne and Franziska Schroeter.

Abstract:In this article, we will introduce methods of non-standard analysis into projective geometry. Especially, we will analyze the properties of a projective space over a non-Archimedean field. Non-Archimedean fields contain numbers that are smaller than every real number: the so called "infinitesimal" numbers. The theory is well known from non-standard analysis. This enables us to define projective objects that deviate only infinitesimally (in an appropriate metric) from each other. And we show that in most cases operations involving such objects that deviate infinitesimally also experience only infinitesimal change. Another focus will be where this property does not hold true and show that this usually involves discontinuity or degeneration. Furthermore, we will explore common projective concepts like projective transformations, cross-ratios and conics in a non-standard setting.

Non-noetherian GL-algebras in characteristic two

Abstract:Over fields of characteristic two, we construct an infinite ascending chain of GL-stable ideals in the coordinate ring of infinite skew-symmetric matrices. This construction provides the first known example of a non-noetherian GL-algebra, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the area. Our results build on the work of Draisma, Krasilnikov, and Krone.

Abstract:The works of R. Descartes, I. M. Gelfand and A. Grothendieck have convinced us that commutative rings should be thought of as rings of functions on some appropriate (commutative) spaces. If we try to push this notion forward we reach the realm of Non-commutative Geometry. The confluence of ideas comes here mainly from three seemingly disparate sources, namely, quantum physics, operator algebras (Connes-style) and algebraic geometry. Following the title of the article, an effort has been made to provide an overview of the third point of view. Since na\" ive efforts to generalize commutative algebraic geometry fail, one goes to the root of the problem and tries to work things out "categorically". This makes the approach a little bit abstract but not abstruse. However, an honest confession must be made at the outset - this write-up is very far from being definitive; hopefully it will provide glimpses of some interesting developments at least.

Abstract:We shall describe a simple generalization of commutative rings. The category GR of such "rings", contains the ordinary commutative rings (fully faithfully), but also the "integers" and "residue field" at a real or complex place of a field ; the "field with one element" (the initial object of GR ); the "arithmetical surface" ( the sum in the category GR of the integers with them self: Z(x)Z ) . We shall show that this geometry "see" the real and complex places of a number field (there is an Ostrowski theorem that the valuation sub-GR of a number field correspond to the finite and infinite primes; there is a compactification of the spectrum of the integers ). One can develop algebraic geometry using GR following Grothendieck paradigm . Quillen's homotopical algebra replaces homological algebra . There is an analogue of Quillen's cotangent bundle - in particular there is a theory of non-additive derivations, with modules of Kahler differentials which satisfy all the usual exact sequences - we compute explicitly the differentials of the integers Z over the initial object F1 . Finally we associate with any topological compact valuation GR a meromorphic function - its "zeta" : for the p-adic integers we get the p-local factor of zeta, for the "real integers" we get the gamma factor.

Abstract:These lecture notes for the 2013 CIME/CIRM summer school Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry deal with manifestly infinite-dimensional algebraic varieties with large symmetry groups. So large, in fact, that subvarieties stable under those symmetry groups are defined by finitely many orbits of equations---whence the title Noetherianity up to symmetry. It is not the purpose of these notes to give a systematic, exhaustive treatment of such varieties, but rather to discuss a few "personal favourites": exciting examples drawn from applications in algebraic statistics and multilinear algebra. My hope is that these notes will attract other mathematicians to this vibrant area at the crossroads of combinatorics, commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, statistics, and other applications.

Abstract:This is the second in a series of papers on standard monomial theory and invariant theory of arc spaces. For any algebraically closed field $K$, we construct a standard monomial basis for the arc space of the Pfaffian variety over $K$. As an application, we prove the arc space analogue of the first and second fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the symplectic group.

Abstract:The usual dictionary between geometry and commutative algebra is not appropriate for Arithmetic geometry because addition is a singular operation at the "Real prime". We replace Rings, with addition and multiplication, by Props (=strict symmetric monoidal category generated by one object), or by Bioperad (=two closed symmetric operads acting on each other): to a ring we associate the prop of all matrices over it, with matrix multiplication and block direct sums as the basic operations, or the bioperad consisting of all raw and column vectors over it. We define the "commutative" props and bioperads, and using them we develop a generalized algebraic geometry, following Grothendieck footsteps closely. This new geometry is appropriate for Arithmetic (and potentially also for Physics).

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study local cohomology in the noncommutative algebraic geometry framework of Artin and Zhang. The noncommutative spaces are obtained by base change of a Grothendieck category that is locally noetherian or strongly locally noetherian. Using what we call elementary objects and their injective hulls, we develop a theory of supports and associated primes in these categories. We apply our theory to study a general functorial setup that requires certain conditions on the injective hulls of elementary objects and gives us spectral sequences for derived functors associated to local cohomology objects, as well as generalized local cohomology and also generalized Nagata ideal transforms.

Generalizations of noncommutative Noether's problem

Abstract:Noether's problem is classical and very important problem in algebra. It is an intrinsically interesting problem in invariant theory, but with far reaching applications in the sutdy of moduli spaces, PI-algebras, and the Inverse problem of Galois theory, among others. To obtain an noncommutative analogue of Noether's problem, one would need a significant skew field that shares a role similar to the field of ratioal functions. Given the importance of the Weyl fields due to Gelfand-Kirillov's Conjecture, in 2006 J. Alev and F. Dumas introduced what is nowdays called the noncommutative Noether's problem. Many papers in recent years \cite{FMO}, \cite{EFOS}, \cite{FS}, \cite{Tikaradze} have been dedicated to the subject. The aim of this article is to generalize the main result of \cite{FS} for more general versions of Noether's problem; and consider its analogue in prime characteristic.
