Abstract:Two algebraic number fields are called arithmetically equivalent if the Dedekind zeta functions of the fields coincide. We show that if a G -extension contains non-conjugate arithmetically equivalent fields and there is an injection from G to another group H inducing an isoclinism between G and H , then there are non-conjugate arithmetically equivalent fields inside an H -extension.

Elementary equivalence and disintegration of tracial von Neumann algebras

Abstract:We prove an analog of the disintegration theorem for tracial von Neumann algebras in the setting of elementary equivalence rather than isomorphism, showing that elementary equivalence of two direct integrals implies fiberwise elementary equivalence under mild, and necessary, hypotheses. This verifies a conjecture of Farah and Ghasemi. Our argument uses a continuous analog of ultraproducts where an ultrafilter on a discrete index set is replaced by a character on a commutative von Neumann algebra, which is closely related to Keisler randomizations of metric structures. We extend several essential results on ultraproducts, such as Łoś's theorem and countable saturation, to this more general setting.

Abstract:Motivated by a recent result of Prasad, we consider three stronger notions of arithmetic equivalence: local integral equivalence, integral equivalence, and solvable equivalence. In addition to having the same Dedekind zeta function (the usual notion of arithmetic equivalence), number fields that are equivalent in any of these stronger senses must have the same class number, and solvable equivalence forces an isomorphism of adele rings. Until recently the only nontrivial example of integral and solvable equivalence arose from a group-theoretic construction of Scott that was exploited by Prasad. Here we provide infinitely many distinct examples of solvable equivalence, including a family that contains Scott's construction as well as an explicit example of degree 96. We also construct examples that address questions of Scott, and of Guralnick and Weiss, and shed some light on a question of Prasad.

Abstract:The mod-2 arithmetic Milnor invariants, introduced by Morishita, provide a decomposition law for primes in canonical Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ with unitriangular Galois groups, and contain the Legendre and Redei symbols as special cases. Morishita further proposed a notion of mod-q arithmetic Milnor invariants, where q is a prime power, for number fields containing the q-th roots of unity and satisfying certain class field theory assumptions. We extend this theory from the number field context to general fields, by introducing a notion of a linking invariant for discrete valuations and orderings. We further express it as a Magnus homomorphism coefficient, and relate it to Massey product elements in Galois cohomology.

Abstract:Two cycles on a projective variety over an algebraically closed field are shown to be rationally equivalent if and only if their difference equals a difference of complete intersections of a certain kind. Some of Bloch's conjectures for zero-cycles on surfaces can be restated more geometrically, which leads to several questions.

Abstract:One of the central questions of universal algebraic geometry is: when two algebras have the same algebraic geometry? There are various interpretations of the sentence "Two algebras have the same algebraic geometry". One of these is automorphic equivalence of algebras, which is discussed in this paper, and the other interpretation is geometric equivalence of algebras. In this paper we consider very wide and natural class of algebras: one sorted algebras from IBN variety. The variety is called an IBM variety if two free algebras W(X), W(Y) of this variety are isomorphic if and only if the powers of sets X and Y coincide. In the researching of the automorphic equivalence of algebras we must study the group of automorphisms of the category of the all finitely generated free algebras of our variety and the group of its automorphisms. By [PZ, Theorem 2], if we deal with an IBN variety of one-sorted algebras, then every strongly stable (see Definition 3.1) automorphism of our category defines the other algebraic structure on every algebra H of our variety, such that this algebra with the new algebraic structure automorphically equivalent to the algebra H (Theorem 4.1), i.e., has the same algebraic geometry. From this we conclude the necessary and sufficient conditions for two algebras to be automorphically equivalent. We formulate these conditions by using the notion of geometric equivalence of algebras. It means that we reduce automorphic equivalence of algebras to the simpler notion of geometric equivalence. This paper is a continuation of the research which was started in [PZ].

Abstract:Let $q$ be a quadratic form over a field $F$ and let $L$ be a field extension of $F$ of odd degree. It is a classical result that if $q_L$ is isotropic (resp. hyperbolic) then $q$ is isotropic (resp. hyperbolic). In turn, given two quadratic forms $q, q^\prime$ over $F$, if $q_L \cong q^\prime_L$ then $q \cong q^\prime$. It is natural to ask whether similar results hold for algebras with involution. We give a survey of the progress on these three questions with particular attention to the relevance of hyperbolicity, isotropy and isomorphism over some {appropriate} function field. Incidentally, we prove the anisotropy property in some {new} low degree cases.

Abstract:We use Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé games to give a local geometric criterion for elementary equivalence of II$_1$ factors. We obtain as a corollary that two II$_1$ factors are elementarily equivalent if and only their unitary groups are elementarily equivalent as $\mathbb Z_4$-metric spaces.

Abstract:We show that over a quasi-finite field $k$ (e.g. a finite field) a regular conic bundle over $\mathbf{P}^1_k$ is unirational if all non-split fibres lie over a union of rational points, a closed point of degree at most $2$ and potentially an additional closed point of odd degree. Under the same assumptions, if in addition there do not exist both non-split fibres over a point of degree $2$ and a point of odd degree at least $3$, we prove that all rational points are $R$-equivalent.

Abstract:Extensive work has been done to determine necessary and sufficient conditions for a bijective correspondence of abelian extensions of number fields to force an isomorphism of the base fields. However, explicit examples of correspondences over non-isomorphic fields are rare. Integrally equivalent number fields admit an induced correspondence of abelian extensions. Studying this correspondence using idelic class field theory and linear algebra, we show that the corresponding extensions share features similar to those of arithmetically equivalent fields, and yet they are not generally weakly Kronecker equivalent. We also extend a group cohomological result of Arapura et. al. and present geometric and arithmetic applications.

Abstract:A classical set of birational invariants of a variety are its spaces of pluricanonical forms and some of their canonically defined subspaces. Each of these vector spaces admits a typical metric structure which is also birationally invariant. These vector spaces so metrized will be referred to as the pseudonormed spaces of the original varieties. A fundamental question is the following: Given two mildly singular projective varieties with some of the first variety's pseudonormed spaces being isometric to the corresponding ones of the second variety's, can one construct a birational map between them that induces these isometries? In this work, a positive answer to this question is given for varieties of general type. This can be thought of as a theorem of Torelli type for birational equivalence.

Abstract:We show that every affine or projective algebraic variety defined over the field of real or complex numbers is homeomorphic to a variety defined over the field of algebraic numbers. We construct such a homeomorphism by choosing a small deformation of the coefficients of the original equations. This method is based on the properties of Zariski equisingular families of varieties. Moreover we construct an algorithm, that, given a system of equations defining a variety $V$, produces a system of equations with algebraic coefficients of a variety homeomorphic to $V$

Abstract:The paper is devoted to model-theoretic properties of Kac-Moody groups with the focus on elementary equivalence of Kac-Moody groups. We show that elementary equivalence of (untwisted) affine Kac-Moody groups implies coincidence of their generalized Cartan matrices and the elementary equivalence of their ground fields. We also show that elementary equivalence of arbitrary Kac-Moody groups over finite fields implies coincidence of these fields and an isomorphism of their twin root data. The similar result is established for Kac-Moody groups defined over infinite subfields of the algebraic closures of finite fields.

Abstract:We give several formulas for how Iwasawa $\mu$-invariants of abelian varieties over unramified $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extensions of function fields change under isogeny. These are analogues of Schneider's formula in the number field setting. We also prove that the validity of the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (including the leading coefficient formula) over function fields is invariant under isogeny, without using the result of Kato--Trihan.

Abstract:We study a natural birational invariant for varieties over finite fields and show that its vanishing on projective space is equivalent to the Tate conjecture, the Beilinson conjecture, and the Grothendieck--Serre semi-simplicity conjecture for all smooth projective varieties over finite fields. We further show that the Tate, Beilinson, and 1-semi-simplicity conjecture in half of the degrees implies those conjectures in all degrees.

Abstract:We prove that, for any smooth and projective scheme $X$ over a field $k$ of char. $0$, the set of maps from Spec $k$ to $X$ in the $\mathbf{A}^1$-homotopy category of schemes $\mathcal{H}_{\mathbf{A}^1}(k)$ is in bijection with the quotient of $X(k)$ by $R$-equivalence, and is a birational invariant of $X$. This is achieved by establishing a precise relation between the localization of the category of smooth $k$-schemes by birational maps and the category $\mathcal{H}_{\mathbf{A}^1}(k)$, and by applying results of the second named author and R. Sujatha on birational invariants. This gives a new proof of results obtained by A. Asok and F. Morel.

Abstract:In universal algebraic geometry, an algebra is called an equational domain if the union of two algebraic sets is algebraic. We characterize equational domains, with respect to polynomial equations, inside congruence permutable varieties, and with respect to term equations, among all algebras of size two and all algebras of size three with a cyclic automorphism. Furthermore, for each size at least three, we prove that, modulo term equivalence, there is a continuum of equational domains of that size.

Abstract:We assign functorially a $\mathbb{Z}$-lattice with semisimple Frobenius action to each abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$. This establishes an equivalence of categories that describes abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_p$ avoiding $\sqrt{p}$ as an eigenvalue of Frobenius in terms of simple commutative algebra.
