Abstract:The powders of amorphous nanocrystalline Fe85Si2Al6Cr7 were prepared by high energy ball milling for different times, and measured by XRD and network analyzer. The results show that: 1) nanocrystalline microstructure remarkably improves the microwave permeability, and the permittivity is controlled effectively; 2) by adding proper dyeing auxiliary (such as copper phthalocyanine), the magnetic properties of powders are improved when the particle sizes milled are excessively small.

Abstract:Fe 3 O 4 and Fe nanowires are successfully fabricated by electrospinning method and reduction process. Wiry microstructures were achieved with the phase transformation from α-Fe 2 O 3 to Fe 3 O 4 and Fe by partial and full reduction, while still preserving the wire morphology. The diameters of the Fe 3 O 4 and Fe nanowires are approximately 50–60 nm and 30–40 nm, respectively. The investigation of microwave absorption reveals that the Fe 3 O 4 nanowires exhibit excellent microwave absorbing properties. For paraffin-based composite containing 50% weight concentration of Fe 3 O 4 nanowires, the minimum reflection loss reaches −17.2 dB at 6.2 GHz with the matching thickness of 5.5 mm. Furthermore, the calculation shows that the modulus of the ratio between the complex permittivity and permeability |ε/μ| is far away from unity at the minimum reflection loss point, which is quite different from the traditional opinions.

Abstract:Developing high-performance microwave-absorbing microscale materials is still a challenge for practical anti-electromagnetic interference applications. Herein, a facile strategy for constructing carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/FeSiAl flake composites through in situ growth of CNTs on FeSiAl microscale flakes is developed. The Fe nanoparticles on the oxide surfaces of the FeSiAl flakes serve as catalyst for CNTs. The amount and size of CNTs is adjusted by the reaction temperature and time. Thanks to the optimal interface between CNTs and FeSiAl, the flake morphology of the FeSiAl alloy and the porous structure of dielectric CNTs, proper impedance match, improved microwave absorptivity, increased attenuation ability and enhanced loss capability result in good microwave-absorbing behavior, demonstrating an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.52 GHz (12–15.52 GHz) with 1.7 mm, and minimal reflection loss of −47.32 dB at 9.12 GHz and 2.4 mm. This work provides an effective method for designing and preparing high-performance microscale microwave absorbents.

Abstract:To meet the demand of electromagnetic absorption, cheap and easily available microwave absorbents are urgently required. As an important functional material, carbon fibers (CFs) have been widely reported, however, too high conductivity easily leads to the impedance mismatch, which is not favorable to the microwave absorbing performance (MAP). To address this challenge, in this study, novel TiO2/Fe3O4/CF composites with tunable magnetic were synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by SEM, XRD, XPS and VSM. As absorbents, the minimum reflection loss (RL) value is − 41.52 dB at a thickness of 2.1 mm, and the corresponding bandwidth with effective attenuation (RL < − 10 dB) is up to 5.65 GHz (4.54–10.19 GHz). More importantly, the plausible mechanisms for the enhanced MAP are explored.

Abstract:The surface modified flaky FeSiAl magnetic microwave absorbing material was prepared by controlled oxidation heat treatment, and was compounded with MOFs (Metal Organic Frameworks) material. The dielectric polarization characteristics and the microwave loss mechanism for the heterogeneous structure are analyzed. The obtained MOFs@FeSiAl balances the electromagnetic wave attenuation ability and the impedance matching, thus achieving excellent microwave absorbing properties. The effective absorption bandwidth (<= -20 dB) of the composite material covers 3 similar to 16 GHz when the coating thickness is from 1.5 to 5.0 mm. The minimum value of the reflection loss (RLmin) reaches - 71.5 dB when the frequency is 5.68 GHz, and the coating thickness is 3.85 mm. The research scheme of pre-oxidation and then composite with MOFs materials not only realizes the controllable preparation of high-performance FeSiAl composites, but also enhances the stability and corrosion resistance of the material. Abstract:Nanocrystalline Fe–Ti–Si–Al flaky powders with large aspect ratio have been fabricated by high-energy planetary milling melt-spun ribbons. Magnetic composites made of thermally annealed Fe–Ti–Si–Al flaky powders embedded in epoxy resin exhibit excellent electromagnetic wave absorption properties in a wide frequency range from 100MHz to 2.65GHz. Ti additions can enhance the electrical resistivity of Fe–Si–Al alloy without changing the crystallographic structure, resulting in the reduction of eddy current loss at high frequencies. Moreover, the substitution of Ti for Fe enhances the cut-off frequency of flaky powder–polymer composites. Meanwhile, compared to the Ti-free composites, reflection loss of the Ti-doped composites (3mm in thickness) is lower than −10dB in the frequency range from 593MHz to 1.83GHz, indicating that the composites can effectively work in a wider frequency bandwidth.
Excellent microwave absorption performance of PAN-based Fe/C nanofibers with low loading fillers

Abstract:Carbon/magnetic metal composites have attracted great interest in the microwave absorption field. Here, polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based Fe/C nanofibers were fabricated through electrospinning in combination with high-temperature carbonization, which was used as difunctional dielectric and magnetic microwave absorbing materials. The Fe/C nanofibers fabricated were characterized by a high aspect ratio, and magnetic Fe nanoparticles had uniform distribution within dielectric carbon fibers. The Fe/C nanofibers had prominent performance in absorbing microwave because of favorable impedance matching condition, improved capability in attenuating microwave and synergistic influence between dielectric loss of PAN-based carbon materials and magnetic loss of Fe, which was correlated with the carbonization temperature as well as Fe content. The optical Fe content of 5 wt%, carbonization temperature of 1200 °C, Fe/C/paraffin composites containing 10 wt% fillers had high performance in absorbing microwave, the reflection loss reaching the maximum of |RLmax| = 40.47 dB at 9.36 GHz at 2.5 mm matching thickness, as well as the effective bandwidth (EAB) of 4.64 GHz (13.36–18 GHz), covering 12.88–16.88 GHz at 1.6 mm thin thickness, which nanofibers were easy to obtain and were characterized by strong performance in absorbing microwave, thin thickness and light weight. Thus, the fabricated nanofibers can be recognized as a promising microwave absorber.

Abstract:Carbon-based composites have been proven to be strong candidates for microwave absorbers in recent years. However, as an important member, magnetic hard carbon (HC)-based composites have rarely been studied in the field of microwave absorption. In this study, HC embedded with FeSiAl (FeSiAl@HC) was synthesized by pyrolyzing a mixture of FeSiAl flakes and phenolic resin (PR). The as-synthesized HC-FeSiAl exhibited a layered structure, and the detailed microstructures were modified by changing the mass ratio of FeSiAl flakes and PR. Thus, the as-synthesized HC-FeSiAl exhibited tunable magnetic properties, wealthy functional groups, excellent thermal stability, and enhanced microwave absorption properties. The optimal minimum reflection loss is lower up to −36.1 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth is wider up to 11.7 GHz. These results indicated that HC-FeSiAl should be a strong candidate for practical applications of microwave absorption, which may provide new insight into the synthesis of magnetic HC-based composites.

Abstract:Microwave absorption enhancements through atomic doping in traditional materials remain a significant challenge. Herein, the MAX phase materials of Fe‐doped Ti3AlC2 (xFe‐Ti3AlC2, abbreviated as TFAC‐x, x = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) are synthesized via solid‐phase reaction method. The X‐ray diffraction, Raman, and scanning electron microscopy confirm that the TFAC‐x samples are of high quality with multiphase coexistence structure and abundant interfaces. Relying on the improved impedance matching originating from structural modulation, the synergistic effects of dielectric loss and magnetic loss, as well as the enhanced interfacial polarization and defect dipole polarization, both the microwave absorption intensity and bandwidth are greatly strengthened. Accordingly, the minimum reflection loss of TFAC‐3 sample can achieve ‐33.3 dB and the absorption bandwidth could reach 3.9 GHz with the thickness of only 1.5 mm. Moreover, the investigated frequency can cover 86% through regulating their thickness from 1.5 to 5 mm, showing the excellent frequency modulation effect. The revealed improvements in both the microwave absorption performance and properties of TFAC‐x may enlighten the designing of microwave absorption materials and have potentials for widespread applications. A novel strategy of structural and component modulation in Ti3AlC2 MAX phase by Fe doping is proposed, the improved impedance matching and abundant interfacial polarization are achieved, thus the microwave absorption performance is greatly enhanced.

Abstract:The combination of ferrite and carbon materials with core-shell nanostructures has attracted tremendous interest in microwave absorption field. Herein, Fe/Fe3C-C core-shell nanoparticles with diameters of 10–70 nm were synthesized by one-step metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The nanocores of the nanoparticles can be tailored from Fe3C, to Fe3C/Fe, and then Fe by simply changing the reaction temperature. The Fe/Fe3C-C core-shell nanoparticles exhibited an optimal reflection loss (RL) value of −58.5 dB and effective absorption bandwidth (frequency range for RL <  − 10 dB) of 6.2 GHz at a low thickness of 2.0 mm. The microwave absorption performances of the as-synthesized Fe/Fe3C-C core-shell composites could be easily tuned by the phase composition of nanocores. The achieved results demonstrated that the as-synthesized Fe/Fe3C-C core-shell nanoparticles have considerable potential as an effective microwave absorber with tunable absorption performance.

Abstract:The carbon matrix composites with three-dimensional porous structure and multiple phases were prepared by heat treatment of nano-Fe and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor with different content of nano-Fe. The phase and morphology changes of the samples during heat treatment were investigated, and their electromagnetic properties and microwave absorption performance were compared in the frequency range of 2–18 GHz. The Fe 4 N@Fe 3 O 4 @Fe/carbon composite presents a three-dimensional porous structure with an average pore size of 5 μm. Fe 4 N and Fe 3 O 4 can be generated in situ by the reaction of Fe with active N and O in PAN, which is helpful to improve the dielectric and magnetic losses of the composite. PAN can be cyclized, crosslinked and pyrolyzed to form graphite carbon and amorphous carbon, and various reactions in the heat treatment process, the heterogeneous interfaces between magnetic phases and carbon matrix were formed, which can enhance the interfacial polarization relaxation. With the increase in nano-Fe content, the magnetic loss increases, and with the increase in magnetic particle content and coating thickness, the absorption peak tends to move to lower frequency. When the mass ratio of Fe/PAN in the precursor is 120%, the lowest reflection loss of the composite is − 37 dB at 13 GHz, and the effective absorption bandwidth is 3.23 GHz (11.54–14.77 GHz) with 1.5 mm thickness. When the mass ratio is 180%, the lowest reflection loss is − 33 dB at 4.7 GHz. This study not only provides a simple method to prepare porous carbon and ferromagnetic composites, but also shows that Fe 4 N has great potential in the application of wave absorbers.

Abstract:An efficient scheme was designed to selectively synthesize different categories of core/shell structured magnetic nanoparticles/carbon-based nanohybrids such as Fe3O4/C and Fe/helical carbon nanotubes (HCNTs) through the decomposition of acetylene directly over Fe2O3 nanotubes by controlling the pyrolysis temperature. The measured electromagnetic parameters indicated that the Fe/HCNT nanohybrids exhibited enhanced microwave absorption properties, which may be related to their special structures. The optimum reflection loss (RL) could reach -47.1 dB at 17.39 GHz with a matching thickness of 1.39 mm. The absorption bandwidth with the RL values below -20 dB was up to 11.59 GHz. Moreover, based on the obtained results, the possible enhanced EM absorption mechanisms were also discussed in detail. The results show excellent microwave absorption materials that are lightweight, have strong absorption and a wide absorption frequency band may be realized in these nanohybrids. Abstract:Researchers are constantly trying to exploit the unique advantages of metal–organic framework (MOF) precursors to develop new composite absorbing materials. Although many magnetic absorbers based on precursor metal central ions have been constructed, there are relatively few reports on the introduction of magnetic components through external aids to enhance the magnetic properties of materials. In this work, Fe3O4 nanoparticles are used for composites with MOF-74 containing Mg2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Co2+, and Cu2+ to construct magnetic particle precursors, which were carbonized to form stable magnetic carbon materials. With the assistance of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, MOF-74 containing different metal central ions was fabricated with different hierarchical pore structures. The comparative analysis and systematic electromagnetic parameter study show that the composite particles possess an excellent interface polarization ability and electromagnetic wave absorption performance due to their specific morphology, reasonable composition, and the strengthening effect of magnetic particles. The minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of Fe3O4@Ni-C reaches −59.4 dB@9.9 GHz, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of Fe3O4@Co-C reaches 6.8 GHz@3.1 mm. This work provides an idea for the design and preparation of magnetic composite carbon absorbers.

Abstract:Magnetic particles can be combined with carbon materials to prepare core-shell microwave absorbers and the proper core/shell weight ratio yields the optimal absorption effects. However, few studies have focused on the influence of core surface modification on the microwave absorption performance. In this work, e-Fe3O4@C composite microspheres are synthesized by surface etching of core Fe3O4 microspheres in HCl followed by polymerization/carbonization. Core surface modification improves the microwave absorption capability of the e-Fe3O4@C microsphere films. The minimal reflection loss (RLmin) is -54.38 dB at 12.4 GHz for a film thickness of 2.6 mm and the maximum effective bandwidth is extended to 4.1 GHz (3 mm). Etching of the Fe3O4 core surface increases the interfacial contact area consequently enhancing interface polarization and defects created by surface etching produce additional dipole polarization to further increase the dielectric loss. The underlying mechanism is investigated and described. The results reveal a novel and effective strategy to enhance the properties of core-shell microwave absorption materials. Adjusting the microwave absorption properties of carbon nanotube composites with ferrocene by annealing under different conditions

Abstract:Carbon composites with magnetic metal nanoparticles are promising high-performance microwave absorbers with both dielectric loss and magnetic loss. Ferrocene has been sublimed into the evacuated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and then annealed under different atmosphere to obtain different structures with different microwave absorption features. A large amount of Fe3C Yolk-shell structures with a small amount of low encapsulated Fe3 have been obtained after annealing at hydrogen atmosphere. A large amount of highly encapsulated α and rod-shaped structures composed of Fe3C nanoparticles with a small amount of Fe7C3@MWCNTs have been produced after annealing under ferrocene atmosphere. The structures have been characterized by transmission electron microscope, Raman, and X-ray diffraction. The maximum reflection loss of the as-produced Fe3C yolk-shell structures with a small amount of Fe3 was measured to be up to −35.1 dB at 10.48 GHz with a thickness of 2 mm. The reflection loss values were detected to be less than −10 dB in the range of 8.9–11.4 GHz. However, multiple absorption bands have been observed by sample annealing under ferrocene atmosphere at 4.5, 9.4, 13.4 GHz with corresponding reflection loss values of −3.1, −4.8 and −12.6 dB with a thickness of 2 mm, respectively. The microwave absorption properties have been demonstrated to be significantly affected by the annealing atmospheres and temperatures.

Abstract:In this paper, a three-step method has been applied for preparation of Fe/Fe3O4@TCNFs@TiO2 magnetic hybrid nanofibers (MHNFs) with three-layer core-shell structure. Firstly, tubular polymer nanofiber precursors with FeCl3 embedded in axis (TPNFPs) are synthesized by a confined self-condensation system developed earlier. After high-temperature conversion, tubular magnetic carbon nanofibers loaded with Fe nanoparticles inside (Fe@TCNFs) are obtained. Finally, TiO2 shell formation procedure is carried out by the hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate, and MHNFs with different TiO2 loadings are successfully fabricated. This material possesses both magnetic and dielectric loss abilities that shows excellent microwave absorbing performance. Under filler content of 15 wt%, the minimum reflection loss reaches −44.8 dB@13.9 GHz, and the absorbing layer thickness is only 1.6 mm. In addition, the electromagnetic parameters of MHNFs can be regulated and optimized by adjusting TiO2 loading. It brings better impedance matching property and improves microwave absorbing performance. Meanwhile, the composition, structure and electromagnetic parameters of MHNFs are systematically analyzed. The microwave attenuation mechanism is revealed. This study has guiding significance for the performance optimization of existing microwave absorbers.

Abstract:Fe3O4/carbon composite nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/acetyl acetone iron (AAI)/dimethyl formamide (DMF) solution, followed by stabilization and carbonization. SEM and TEM observations reveal that the fibers are lengthy and uniform, and are loaded with well-distributed Fe3O4 nanoparticles, which are evidenced by XRD. Electrical and magnetic properties of the samples were studied to show the effect of enhancement of electrical conductivity and magnetic hysteresis performance. Finally, the permittivity and permeability parameters were measured by a vector network analyzer, and the reflectivity loss was calculated based on Transmission Line Theory. Results show that Fe3O4/C composite nanofibers exhibit enhanced properties of microwave absorption as compared to those of pure carbon nanofibers by: decreasing reflectivity loss values; widening absorption width and improving performance in low frequency (2-5 GHz) absorption. Absorption properties can be tuned by changing MI content, carbonization temperature, composite fiber/paraffin ratio and coating thickness. It is shown that with coating thickness of 5 mm and fiber/paraffin ratio of 5 wt.%, the bandwidth for reflection loss under -5 dB can reach a maximum of 12-13 GHz in the range of 2-18 GHz, accompanying with a minimum reflection loss of -40 to -45 dB, and preferred low frequency band absorption can also be obtained. The mechanisms for the enhanced absorption performance were briefly discussed. It is supposed that this kind of composite material is promising for resolving the problems of weak absorption in the low frequency range and narrow bandwidth absorption. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V.
