Abstract:Limited work has been performed to investigate the curing requirement of limestone calcined clay systems considering that calcined clay usually increases the water demand of concrete. This study implements internal curing using pre-wetted fine lightweight aggregates to compensate for the high water demand of the limestone-calcined clay (LCC) systems and improve its microstructure by extending the hydration and pozzolanic reactions. Based on this study, the use of internal curing reduces the required high-range water reducer dosage by 30% in LCC systems. Additionally, internal curing increases chemically bound water content by 16% by extending hydration/pozzolanic reaction, which can result in reduced external curing time. Further, internal curing improves the formation factor by 26% in LCC systems by further refining the microstructure. Both LCC mixtures with and without internal curing showed a 16% higher compressive strength, 40% lower volume of micro-pores, and 75% lower initial absorption rate compared to the OPC mixture.
