Abstract:This study investigates the role of leading-edge (LE) curvature in flapping wing aerodynamics considering hovering and forward flight conditions. A scaled-up robotic model is towed along its longitudinal axis by a rack gear carriage system. The forward velocity of the robotic model is changed by varying the advance ratioJfrom 0 (hovering) to 1.0. The study reveals that the LE curvature has insignificant influence on the cycle-average aerodynamic lift and drag. However, the time-history lift coefficient shows that the curvature can enhance the lift around the middle of downstroke. This enhanced lift is reduced from 5% to 1.2% asJchanged from 0 to 1.0. Further flow examinations reveal that the LE curvature is beneficial by enhancing circulation only at the outboard wing sections. The enhanced outboard circulation is found to emanate from the less stretched leading-edge vortices (LEVs), weakened trailing-edge vortices (TEVs), and the coherent merging of the tip vortices (TVs) with the minor LEVs as observed from the phase-lock planar digital particle image velocimetry measurements. The far-wake observation shows that the LE curvature enhances the vorticity within the TV, helping to reduce the overall flow fluctuations in the far field. These findings can be extended to explain the predominantly straight LE wing shape with a small amount of curvature only observed near the wing tip for flapping fliers with Re from 103to 104.
Performance improvement of flapping propulsions from spanwise bending on a low-aspect-ratio foil

Abstract:Inspired from deformable caudal fins, continuous bending motion is utilized to improve the propulsive performance of flapping foils for underwater vehicles. The propulsive performance of a flapping foil with spanwise bending motion is studied numerically using the immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method. Simulations are conducted by varying the bending parameters and phases of motion at Re = 200 in uniform flow. It is found that the spanwise bending significantly affects vortex evolution and wake structures, which results in the variation of the flapping propulsion. For the present model with an aspect ratio of two, the most powerful (highest thrust) bending is achieved when fixing the phase lag between bending and flapping at 150°, while the most efficient (highest propulsive efficiency) bending is reached at a phase lag of 270°. With proper phase lags, the propulsive performance could be improved into 137% in thrust and 111% in efficiency from the rigid one. Under the most efficient phase lag, the efficiency could be furtherly improved into 112% through adjusting the bending amplitude due to the weak vortex tangle. The propulsive performance is also sensitive to the bending shape. This study presents a numerical guide for the high-performance flapping foil design with spanwise bending movement.

Modulation of leading edge vorticity and aerodynamic forces in flexible flapping wings

Abstract:In diverse biological flight systems, the leading edge vortex has been implicated as a flow feature of key importance in the generation of flight forces. Unlike fixed wings, flapping wings can translate at higher angles of attack without stalling because their leading edge vorticity is more stable than the corresponding fixed wing case. Hence, the leading edge vorticity has often been suggested as the primary determinant of the high forces generated by flapping wings. To test this hypothesis, it is necessary to modulate the size and strength of the leading edge vorticity independently of the gross kinematics while simultaneously monitoring the forces generated by the wing. In a recent study, we observed that forces generated by wings with flexible trailing margins showed a direct dependence on the flexural stiffness of the wing. Based on that study, we hypothesized that trailing edge flexion directly influences leading edge vorticity, and thereby the magnitude of aerodynamic forces on the flexible flapping wings. To test this hypothesis, we visualized the flows on wings of varying flexural stiffness using a custom 2D digital particle image velocimetry system, while simultaneously monitoring the magnitude of the aerodynamic forces. Our data show that as flexion decreases, the magnitude of the leading edge vorticity increases and enhances aerodynamic forces, thus confirming that the leading edge vortex is indeed a key feature for aerodynamic force generation in flapping flight. The data shown here thus support the hypothesis that camber influences instantaneous aerodynamic forces through modulation of the leading edge vorticity.

Abstract:The incorporation of nature-inspired techniques to control or reduce boundary layer separation, to bring about performance enhancements on air/water vehicles, has been an active research area for many years. In this paper, a baseline NACA0012 airfoil is modified using a short flap on its upper surface at a Reynolds number of <i>Re</i> = 1000. The impact of the flap configuration—described by length, attachment position, deployment angle, and material properties, on the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil—quantified by mean and fluctuating forces, is investigated, and the flow field is analyzed. Inspired by the observation of pop-up feathers on a bird's wing, the flap is first set to be rigid for a range of location, size, and inclination angles. After the optimal location of a rigid flap has been established, the flap is then allowed to be flexible, its motion is coupled to the encircling flow field, and it is tested for a range of mass ratios and bending stiffness values. The fluid motion is obtained by solving the lattice Boltzmann equation, while the dynamics of the flexible flap are calculated using the finite element method and the coupling between the flow and flap handled by the immersed boundary method. For the flexible flap, two flapping patterns are observed and the mechanism of separation control via rigid/flexible flap is explained. Compared to the flapless NACA0012 airfoil case, in the case with a flap of optimal configuration, the mean lift coefficient is improved by 13.51%, the mean drag coefficient is decreased by 3.67%, the mean lift-drag ratio is improved by 17.84%, the maximum lift fluctuation is decreased by 40.90%, and the maximum drag fluctuation is decreased by 56.90%.

Abstract:Wavy leading edge modifications of airfoils through imitating humpback whale flippers has been considered as a viable passive way to control flow separation. In this paper, flows around a baseline 63(4)-021 airfoil and one with leading-edge sinusoidal protuberances were simulated using S-A turbulence model. When studying the static stall characteristics, it is found that the modified airfoil does not stall in the traditional manner, with increasing poststall lift coefficients. At high angles of attack, the flows past the wavy leading edge stayed attached for a distance, while the baseline foil is in a totally separated flow condition. On this basis, the simulations of pitch characteristic were carried out for both foils. At high angles of attack mild variations in lift and drag coefficients of the modified foil can be found, leading to a smaller area of hysteresis loop. The special structure of wavy leading edge can help maintain high consistency of the flow field in dynamic pitching station within a particular range of angles of attack.
Fluid-structure interaction of a bio-inspired passively deployable flap for lift enhancement

Abstract:Birds have a remarkable ability to perform complex maneuvers at post-stall angles of attack. The passive deployment of self-actuating covert feathers in response to unsteady flow separation while performing such maneuvers provides a passive flow control paradigm for these aerodynamic capabilities. Most studies involving covert-feathers-inspired passive flow control have modeled the feathers as a rigidly attached or a freely moving flap on a wing. A flap mounted via a torsional spring enables a configuration more emblematic of the finite stiffness associated with the covert-feather dynamics. The performance benefits and flow physics associated with this more general case remain largely unexplored. In this work, we model covert feathers as a passively deployable, torsionally hinged flap on the suction surface of a stationary airfoil. We numerically investigate this airfoil-flap system at a low Reynolds number of $Re=1{,}000$ and angle of attack of $20^\circ$ by performing high-fidelity nonlinear simulations using a projection-based immersed boundary method. A parametric study performed by varying the stiffness of the spring, mass of the flap and location of the hinge yielded lift improvements as high as 27% relative to the baseline flap-less case and revealed two dominant flow behavioral regimes. A detailed analysis revealed that the stiffness-dependent mean flap deflection and inertia-dependent amplitude and phase of flap oscillations altered the dominant flow characteristics in both the regimes. Of special interest for performance benefits were the flap parameters that enhanced the lift-conducive leading-edge vortex while weakening the trailing-edge vortex and associated detrimental effect of upstream propagation of reverse flow. These parameters also yielded a favorable temporal synchronization of flap oscillations with the vortex-shedding process in both regimes.

Effect of wingtip-curve on aerodynamic performance in flapping flexible wings: rectangular versus hawkmoth-like

Abstract:Insects have various wing morphologies and flapping systems to achieve a highly maneuverable performance at low speed. Among unsteady aerodynamic mechanisms in flapping flights, a leading-edge vortex is a significant key to generating lift stably in insect flights. The leading-edge vortex behavior is correlated with an overall vortical system around flapping wings. In addition, the insects have flexible wing structures that are deformable while flapping their wings. The wing deformations can be easily affected by wing morphologies and kinematic motions, leading to different vortical structures around the flexible wings. Thus, lift enhancement in flapping flexible wings depends on the wing shape and structural deformation in diverse species of insects. Here, by measuring and comparing time-varying force/torque and flow structures of two different flexible wings, rectangular (non-curved, at = ~ 6044) and hawkmoth-like (curved, at = ~ 5309) shapes, it was found that a wingtip curve is a meaningful factor in studying flapping flexible wings. In a flexible case, the hawkmoth-like model had a widened leading-edge vortex region and strengthened circulations around the inner wing, thereby producing more lift (12.7% increase) and achieving better aerodynamic performance (4.8% increase of lift-power ratios). However, despite both flexible models having similar flexural stiffnesses, these features were not observed in the rectangular model, even generating more aerodynamic force even generating more aerodynamic force than the hawkmoth-like model in the rigid case (8.12%, 1.52%, and 16.99% greater in lift, drag, and power, respectively). These were caused by different wingtip motions between two flexible wings during wing reversal, leading to different downwash and corresponding leading-edge vortex structures. These findings demonstrate that the wingtip curve effect might be improved when combined with wing flexibility. They, thus, inspire future research on flapping motions, wing shapes, and structures.

Effect of a Single Leading-Edge Protuberance on NACA 634-021 Airfoil Performance

Abstract:Leading-edge protuberances on airfoils or wings have been considered as a viable passive control method for flow separation. In this paper, the aerodynamic performance of a modified airfoil with a single leading-edge protuberance was investigated and compared with the baseline NACA 634-021 airfoil. Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model was applied for the numerical simulation. Compared to the sharp decline of baseline lift coefficient, the stall angle of the modified foil decreased and the decline of the lift coefficient became mild. The poststall performance of the modified airfoil was improved, while the prestall performance was declined. Asymmetric flows along the spanwise direction were observed on the modified airfoil, and the local region around one shoulder of the protuberance suffered from leading-edge separation at prestall angles of attack, which may be responsible for the performance decline. At poststall angles of attack, the attached flows along the peak of the protuberance with a sideward velocity component would help improving the total performance of the airfoil. Experimental visualization methods, including surface tuft and smoke flow, were performed, and the asymmetric flow pattern past the protuberance was successfully captured. This specific phenomenon may be largely related to the formation of the biperiodic condition and other complicated flow patterns induced by multiple leading-edge protuberances. The formation mechanism and suppression method of the symmetry breaking phenomenon should be investigated more deeply in the future to guide the practical application of this passive control method.

Abstract:In recent years, leading-edge tubercles have gained significant attention as an innovative biomimetic flow control technique. This paper explores their impact on the aerodynamic performance and flow patterns of an airfoil through wind tunnel experiments, utilizing force measurements and tuft visualization at Reynolds numbers between 2.7 × 105 and 6.3 × 105. The baseline airfoil exhibits a hysteresis loop near the stall angle, with sharp changes in lift coefficient during variations in the angle of attack (AOA). In contrast, the airfoil with leading-edge tubercles demonstrates a smoother stall process and enhanced post-stall performance, though its pre-stall performance is slightly reduced. The study identifies four distinct flow regimes on the modified airfoil, corresponding to different segments of the lift coefficient curve. As the AOA increases, the flow transitions through stages of full attachment, trailing-edge separation, and local leading-edge separation across some or all valley sections. Additionally, the study suggests that normalizing aerodynamic performance based on the valley section chord length is more effective, supporting the idea that leading-edge tubercles function like a series of delta wings in front of a straight-leading-edge wing. These insights provide valuable guidance for the design of blades with leading-edge tubercles in applications such as wind and tidal turbines.

Abstract:Abstract Aerofoil leading-edge fluid-blowing control is computationally studied to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The fluid injection momentum coefficient Cu (the ratio of injection to incoming square velocities times the slot's width to aerofoil's half chord-length), varies from 0.5% to 5.4%. Both static and dynamic conditions are investigated for a NACA0018 aerofoil at low speed and Reynolds number of 250k based on the aerofoil's chord-length. The aerofoil is dynamically pitched at at a reduced frequency (the pitching tangential speed to the free-stream speed ratio), varying between 0.0078 to 0.2. RANS and Unsteady RANS (URANS) are used in the simulations as based on the Transition SST and Spalart-Allmaras models, generally achieving good agreement with experimental results in lift and drag coefficients and in the pressure coefficient distributions along the aerofoil. It is found that oscillating the aerofoil can delay stall, as expected, in dynamic stall. Leading-edge blowing control can also significantly delay stall both in static and dynamic conditions as long as sufficient momentum is applied to the control. On the other hand, for a small Cu such as 0.5%, the leading-edge control worsens the performance and hastens the appearance of stall in both static and dynamic conditions. The aerofoil's oscillation reduces the differences between pitch-up and pitch-down aerodynamic performances. Detailed analysis of vorticity, pressure, velocity and streamline contours are given to provide plausible explanations and insight to the flow.

Abstract:Asymmetric leading edge offers several advantages over conventional leading edge. However, there are few related published research on compressor blades. This study proposes a blade parameterization method that superimposing the thickness distribution on the camber line at the middle and curve fitting at the leading and trailing edges. This parameterization method is applied to a stator in the final stage of an axial compressor, and numerical simulation is used to calculate the aerodynamic performance at various attack angles under the designed inlet Mach number. There is an optimal deflection angle regardless of which side of the leading edge deflects, and deflection toward the pressure side is conducive to the suppression of separation bubble near the leading edge at positive attack angle. When the maximum curvature of the pressure side is decreased, the operating range changed slightly, but the positive attack angle range grew from 5.166° to 5.466°.

Abstract:Geometrical modification of airfoils by leading-edge protuberances has attracted plenty of attention as a passive separation control method. In this research, the effect of a single leading-edge protuberance with different amplitudes on the performance of a two-dimensional airfoil (NACA 63(4)-021) is investigated through wind tunnel experiment and theoretical analysis. Force measurement experiment shows that all the modified airfoils demonstrate a special two-step stall performance. When the first step of stall occurs, the lift coefficient of the modified airfoils drops to a medium value between the pre-stall and post-stall lift coefficients of the baseline airfoil and keeps nearly constant within a range of AOA (angle of attack). Tuft visualization reveals that during the first step of stall, the flow pattern on different sides of the protuberance is distinctly different, respectively, showing leading-edge separation and trailing-edge separation, which are compartmentalized by the attached flow originated from the peak of the protuberance. The flow control mechanism is contributed to the combined effect of the early occurrence of the leading-edge separation around the protuberance root, the inherent hysteretic performance, and the flow compartmentalization effect. A theoretical model based on the lifting line theory, which takes the amendment of the hysteresis and compartmentalization effects into consideration, is proposed to analyze the performance of the modified airfoils. The sectional and overall performances by theoretical analysis are highly consistent with the tendency of the experiment results. Based on the theoretical model, the spanwise circulation gradient induced by the protuberance is considered to be responsible for the earlier separation around the protuberance roots at pre-stall AOAs. Further investigation on the effect of the geometrical parameters of the protuberance reveals that the amplitude-to-wavelength ratio plays a dominant role on the performance of the modified airfoils. The special flow phenomenon induced by the single leading-edge protuberance discovered in this research and the proposed mechanism provide an essential point of view for fully understanding the combined mechanism of multiple protuberances. Control of leading-edge separation on bioinspired airfoil with fluttering coverts

Abstract:In this work, the aerodynamic role of the artificial covert feathers (i.e., coverts) on an airfoil is experimentally studied in a wind tunnel to investigate the flow control effect on the leading-edge separation. We apply flexible featherlike devices on a high-angle-of-attack airfoil. We use a hot-wire anemometer to measure the velocity profiles and turbulent fluctuations in the downstream wake flow. As a baseline of flow separation, a two-dimensional NACA 0018 airfoil model is set at the angle of attack of 15 ° at the chord-based Reynolds number of 1.0×10^{5}, causing strong leading-edge and trailing-edge shear layers and a low-speed wake flow area in between as large as 0.35 chord length. When deployed on the upper wing surface, the flexible coverts adaptively flutter under the influence of the local unsteady airflow. Hot-wire measurement results show that the leading-edge coverts effectively suppress the flow separation and reduce the size of the wake flow area. The change of power spectral density shows that the predominant peaks as the fundamental and harmonic frequencies are both attenuated due to the suppression of unsteady motions of the shear layers. On the other hand, the fluttering coverts at the trailing edge modify the trailing-edge shear layer by redistributing the turbulent kinetic energy to the high-frequency components. By simultaneous double-point measurement, we find that the leading-edge and trailing-edge shear layers are drawn closer to each other, and the two shear layers show an increased peak in the coherence spectrum. Further multiscale wavelet analysis shows that the perturbations at the 60% chord length increase the large-scale amplitude modulation of small-scale turbulence and therefore they stabilize the leading-edge and trailing-edge shear layers. Meanwhile, the flow intermittency outside of the wake flow area is attenuated as well. The effective flow control effects in the present work are in good agreement with the previous direct observations of bird flight in literature that the coverts on the upper wing surface play an important role in flow separation control during high-angle-of-attack flight. These findings advance the understanding of aerodynamic contribution of the covers on bird wings and reveal the engineering potential of bioinspired coverts for flow separation control of aircrafts and unmanned air vehicles.
Numerical study of the aerodynamic effects of bio-inspired leading-edge serrations on a heaving wing at a low Reynolds number

Abstract:A numerical study with large-eddy simulation (LES) method is performed on the aerodynamic effects of bio-inspired leading-edge serrations on a wing in heaving motion at a low Reynolds number of Re=2×104. During the research, rigorous contrastive simulations are performed for the baseline wing and the serrated ones. The baseline wing has a NACA0012 profile and the serrated ones are obtained by stretching/shrinking the leading portion of the baseline sinusoidally. Conclusive results show that leading-edge serrations can help reduce aerodynamic hysteresis and suppress dynamic-stall-induced load oscillations effectively. More importantly, serrated wings can be more efficient in lift production than the baseline, especially for relatively high reduced frequencies. In the currently covered parameter space, the largest lift efficiency improvement achieved by the leading-edge serrations can reach 15.92%, and the least improvement is 2.73%. Along with these good properties, the leading-edge serrations have induced larger drag, which indicates they are undesirable for propulsive motivations. Visualization of the flow fields reveals that a series of counter-rotating streamwise vortex pairs are dynamically induced by the leading-edge serrations. These streamwise vortices can act as momentum transporters and help enhance momentum exchange between low-energy boundary layer and high-energy outer flows, which can affect the flow structures as well as the aerodynamics of a heaving wing greatly. The current results may provide inspirations for improving aerodynamics, economies and stabilities of bionic underwater/aerial micro robots or any other devices which have heaving/flapping parts.

Abstract:Leading-edge protuberances on airfoils or hydrofoils have been considered as a viable passive method for flow separation control recently. In this article, the hydrodynamic performance of a NACA 634-021 (baseline) foil and two modified foils with leading-edge protuberances was numerically investigated using the Spalart–Allmaras turbulence model. It was found that modified foils performed worse than the baseline foil at pre-stall angles, while the lift coefficients at high angles of attack of the modified foils were increased. Both the deterioration of pre-stall and the improvement of post-stall performance were enhanced with larger amplitude of protuberance. Near-wall flow visualizations showed that the leading-edge protuberances worked in pairs at high angles of attack, producing different forms of streamwise vortices. An attached flow along some valley sections was observed, leading to a higher local lift coefficient at post-stall angles. The leading-edge protuberances were considered as sharing a similar mechanism as delta wings, increasing nonlinear lift at large angles of attack. The specific stall characteristics of this leading-edge modification could provide some guidelines for the design of some special hydrofoils or airfoils.
Numerical Studies of Reverse Flows Controlled by Undulating Leading Edge

Abstract:The improved delayed detached-eddy simulation (IDDES) method is used to simulate the reverse flows past an NACA0012 airfoil at medium (10°) and large (30°) angles of attack. The numerical results of the baseline configuration are compared with the available measurements. The effects of the undulating leading edge with four different amplitudes are compared and analyzed at angle of attack of 10°. Based on these analyses, the amplitude of A/C=0.04 yields the best performance. Compared with the uncontrolled case, the performances of the undulating leading edge are greatly improved with reducing of the aerodynamic fluctuations. Furthermore, the mechanisms of performance are explored by comparing the local flow structures near the undulations.
Experiments and numerical simulations on hovering three-dimensional flexible flapping wings

Abstract:In this paper, the applicability and accuracy of high-fidelity experimental and numerical approaches in the analysis of three-dimensional flapping (revolving and pitching) wings operating under hovering flight conditions, i.e. where unsteady and three-dimensional rotational effects are strong, are assessed. Numerical simulations are then used to explore the role of mass and frequency ratios on aerodynamic performance, wing dynamics and flow physics. It is shown that time-averaged lift increases with frequency ratio, up to a certain limit that depends on mass ratio and beyond which upward wing bending and flexibility induced phase lag between revolving an pitching motions at stroke reversal become strong and contribute to phases of negative lift that counterbalances the initial lift increase. This wing dynamics, which is dominated by spanwise bending, also affects wing-wake interactions and, in turn, leading edge vortex formation.

Abstract:In spite of its mammoth physical size, the humpback whale's manoeuvrability in hunting has captured the attention of biologists as well as fluid mechanists. It has now been established that the protrusions on the leading-edges of the humpback's pectoral flippers, known as tubercles, account for this species’ agility and manoeuvrability. In the present work, Prandtl's nonlinear lifting-line theory was employed to propose a hypothesis that the favourable traits observed in the performance of tubercled lifting bodies are not exclusive to this form of leading-edge configuration. Accordingly, a novel alternative to tubercles was introduced and incorporated into the design of four airfoils that underwent wind tunnel force and pressure measurement tests in the transitional flow regime. In addition, a Computation Fluid Dynamics study was performed using the Shear Stress Transport transitional model in the context of unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes at several attack angles. The results from the numerical investigation are in reasonable agreement with those of the experiments, and suggest the presence of features that are also observed in flows over tubercled foils, most notably a distinct pair of streamwise vortices for each wavelength of the tubercle-like feature.

Abstract:Experimental folding fin models with an adjustable free-play are tested in a wind tunnel. The fin structure is modeled using the free-interface component mode synthesis method, and its free-play is modeled as four independent nonlinear springs with asymmetric stiffness. A nonplanar unsteady vortex-lattice method considering compressibility is employed to address nonlinear deformation and high subsonic flow. Surface spline interpolation is improved through projection and partition. The aeroelastic characteristics of folding fins with different free-play magnitudes, initial conditions and elastic-axis positions are analyzed using an established time-marching method because of its relatively small computation scale and high precision. The results show good consistency among the presented method, the wind tunnel test and the harmonic balance method. There is a negative correlation between the critical speed of divergent motion and the ratio of the initial condition to the free-play magnitude. If either the free-play magnitude or the initial condition is extreme (tiny or vast), the system nonlinearity degenerates to linearity. Generally, the flutter prevention design of a linear model can be applied to a nonlinear model, such as moving the elastic-axis position aftward. The presented fin configuration exhibits an unstable limit cycle oscillation because the orders of coupled flutter modes do not change with variations in equivalent linear stiffness.

Abstract:Flapping flight and swimming in many organisms is accompanied by significant bending of flexible wings and fins. The instantaneous shape of wings and fins has, in turn, a profound effect on the fluid dynamic forces they can generate, with non-monotonic relationships between the pattern of deformation waves passing along the wing and the thrust developed. Many of these deformations arise, in part, from the passive mechanics of oscillating a flexible air- or hydrofoil. At the same time, however, their instantaneous shape may well emerge from details of the fluid loading. This issue-the extent to which there is feedback between the instantaneous wing shape and the fluid dynamic loading-is core to understanding flight control. We ask to what extent surface shape of wings and fins is controlled by structural mechanics versus fluid dynamic loading. To address this issue, we use a combination of computational and analytic methods to explore how bending stresses arising from inertial-elastic mechanisms compare to those stresses that arise from fluid pressure forces. Our analyses suggest that for certain combinations of wing stiffness, wing motions, and fluid density, fluid pressure stresses play a relatively minor role in determining wing shape. Nearly all of these combinations correspond to wings moving in air. The exciting feature provided by this analysis is that, for high Reynolds number motions where linear potential flow equations provide reasonable estimates of lift and thrust, we can finally examine how wing structure affects flight performance. Armed with this approach, we then show how modest levels of passive elasticity can affect thrust for a given level of energy input in the form of an inertial oscillation of a compliant foil.
