Abstract:Flapping flight has undoubtedly played a significant role in many of the aeronautical engineering achievements in the past several centuries. Flapping motions of wings/fins are used by animals (such as birds, insects and bats) to generate lift or thrust to keep them aloft in the surrounding fluid. Researches in this area are not only motivated by the fundamental interest of understanding the mechanism of flapping flight, but also the development of Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) based on biomimetics. In this lecture, we will address our efforts towards both experimental studies and virtual testing of flapping flight with our High End Digital Prototyping (HEDP) system. The aim of our research is to use physical and biological models to drive the engineering design of these vehicles. Firstly, two types of flapping-wing Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) with spatial four-bar drive mechanism will be presented, including the wind tunnel experiment and prototype flight test results. Secondly, various computation approaches have been adopted to simulate the flapping motions, including traditional moving mesh techniques based on Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation, and Lattice Boltzmann method with immersed boundary methods. For a single wing-system, we have investigated the influences of various parameters on both the symmetric flapping and asymmetric flapping with bird-like or turtle-like flapping mode. For a tandem wing system, we have investigated the interaction between the hind wing and the vortex shedding off the fore wing and learned how to utilize the flow mechanism to achieve better aerodynamic performances. Moreover, Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) algorithm has been adopted to reveal the underlying physics due to its capability and accuracy in analyzing the complex transient systems. Finally, the flight control design of a dragonfly-like Flapping Wing Micro Aerial Vehicle (FWMAV) is presented, which has incorporated a Linear-Quadratic Regulator (LQR) method and an Iterative Learning Tuning (ILT). In general, we expect that these virtual testing by computational simulations and flight control can drive the design of our next generation flapping-wing UAVs in the future.

Abstract:We establish the dynamics relative to flapping angle of the flapping wing vehicle based on the quasi-steady aerodynamics model and Newton-Euler motion equations, and describe the stability analysis method of linearized perturbation equation under active control by varying flapping frequency based on the Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion. To give a demonstration, we design a flapping wing mechanism and analyze its stability under the linear controller. As a typical benchmark, the aerodynamic and kinematic parameters of a hummingbird are used to estimate stability derivatives of the flapping-wing vehicle. The feasible region for the gain selection of our linear controller is finally obtained.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical study on the aerodynamic performance of three-dimensional flapping wings hovering in ultra-low-density fluid by using an immersed boundary method with a focus on the effects of compressibility on force production and flapping efficiency. Simulations are conducted by varying Mach number, aspect ratio, stroke amplitude, and flexibility of the wing. It is found that the lift coefficient and efficiency of rigid wings are reduced by up to 10.6% and 10.7%, respectively, when the Mach number is increased from 0.2 (weakly compressible) to 0.9 (highly compressible). To achieve sufficient lift force in the ultra-low-density atmosphere, three main strategies including varying the aspect ratio, stroke amplitude, and flexibility of wings are explored. It is found that a wing with high aspect ratio, small and fast stroke motion, and moderate flexibility is able to generate a high lift. An optimized flexible wing according to the aforementioned analysis is further proposed and simulated, which shows 38.3% and 20.8% enhancements of the mean lift coefficient and efficiency, respectively. The present study shows that the flapping aerial vehicle in ultra-low-density atmosphere is highly feasible from the aerodynamic point of view.

Abstract:Hummingbirds and insects achieve outstanding flight performance by adapting their flapping motion to the flight requirements. Their wing kinematics can change from smooth flapping to highly dynamic waveforms, generating unsteady aerodynamic phenomena such as leading-edge vortices (LEV), rotational circulation, wing wake capture, and added mass. This article uncovers the interactions of these mechanisms in the case of a rigid semi-elliptical wing undergoing aggressive kinematics in the hovering regime at $Re\sim \mathcal{O}(10^3)$. The flapping kinematics were parametrized using smoothed steps and triangular functions and the flow dynamics were simulated by combining the overset method with Large Eddy Simulations (LES). The analysis of the results identifies an initial acceleration phase and a cruising phase. During the former, the flow is mostly irrotational and governed by the added mass effect. The added mass was shown to be responsible for a lift first peak due to the strong flapping acceleration. The dynamic pitching and the wing wake interaction generate a second lift peak due to a downwash flow and a vortex system on the proximal and distal parts of the wing's pressure side. Conversely, aerodynamic forces in the cruising phase are mainly governed by the growth and the establishment of the LEV. Finally, the leading flow structures in each phase and their impact on the aerodynamic forces were isolated using the extended Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD).

Abstract:We report direct numerical simulations of the flow around a spanwise-flexible wing in forward flight. The simulations were performed at for wings of aspect ratio 2 and 4 undergoing a heaving and pitching motion at Strouhal number . We have varied the effective stiffness of the wing while keeping the effective inertia constant, . It has been found that there is an optimal aerodynamic performance of the wing linked to a damped resonance phenomenon, that occurs when the imposed frequency of oscillation approaches the first natural frequency of the structure in the fluid, . In that situation, the time-averaged thrust is maximum, increasing by factor 2 with respect to the rigid case with an increase in propulsive efficiency of approximately 15 %. This enhanced aerodynamic performance results from the combination of larger effective angles of attack of the outboard wing sections and a delayed development of the leading edge vortex. With increasing flexibility beyond the resonant frequency, the aerodynamic performance drops significantly, in terms of both thrust production and propulsive efficiency. The cause of this drop lies in the increasing phase lag between the deflection of the wing and the heaving/pitching motion, which results in weaker leading edge vortices, negative effective angles of attack in the outboard sections of the wing, and drag generation in the first half of the stroke. Our results also show that flexible wings with the same but different aspect ratio have the same aerodynamic performance, emphasizing the importance of the structural properties of the wing for its aerodynamic performance.

Abstract:Abstract In order to study the role of the passive deformation in the aerodynamics of insect wings, we computationally model the three-dimensional fluid–structure interaction of an elastic rectangular wing at a low aspect ratio during hovering flight. The code couples a viscous incompressible flow solver based on the immersed-boundary method and a nonlinear finite-element solver for thin-walled structures. During a flapping stroke, the wing surface is dominated by non-uniform chordwise deformations. The effects of the wing stiffness, mass ratio, phase angle of active pitching, and Reynolds number are investigated. The results show that both the phase and the rate of passive pitching due to the wing flexibility can significantly modify the aerodynamics of the wing. The dynamic pitching depends not only on the specified kinematics at the wing root and the stiffness of the wing, but also greatly on the mass ratio, which represents the relative importance of the wing inertia and aerodynamic forces in the wing deformation. We use the ratio between the flapping frequency, $\omega $ , and natural frequency of the wing, ${\omega }_{n} $ , as the non-dimensional stiffness. In general, when $\omega / {\omega }_{n} \leq 0. 3$ , the deformation significantly enhances the lift and also improves the lift efficiency despite a disadvantageous camber. In particular, when the inertial pitching torque is assisted by an aerodynamic torque of comparable magnitude, the lift efficiency can be markedly improved.

Abstract:The self-sustained flapping of a three-dimensional flexible plate in a uniform viscous flow is numerically simulated with a fictitious domain method. The effects of the various non-dimensional control parameters including the Reynolds number, the density ratio, the dimensionless shear modulus, the length–thickness ratio, and the width–length ratio on the flapping of the plate are investigated. The results show that there exist two flapping modes: symmetrical and asymmetrical flapping about the centerline in the spanwise direction. Near the critical point a decrease in the plate width–length ratio, or the increase in the Reynolds number or the reduced velocity (a combination of the density ratio, the dimensionless shear modulus, and the length–thickness ratio) can make symmetric (or nearly symmetric) flapping become asymmetric. It is found that the flapping amplitude is mainly controlled by the density ratio and the dimensionless elastic modulus, while the frequency by the density ratio and the length–thickness ratio. In addition, the flapping amplitude and frequency are affected significantly by the confinement effect of the computational domain, and normally enhanced as the confinement effect becomes stronger. The effects of the plate width and the mass ratio (i.e., the ratio of the length–thickness and density ratios) on the critical reduced velocities are examined. The results indicate that when the fluid–plate mass ratio (or the plate length–thickness ratio) is relatively small there exist two significantly different critical velocities for the flapping instability, depending on the strength of initial plate deformation, a hysteresis phenomenon. No obvious hysteresis can be observed when the fluid–plate mass ratio (or the plate length–thickness ratio) is large.

Abstract:An immersed-boundary method is used to investigate the flapping wings with different aspect ratios ranging from 1 to 5.The numerical results on wake structures and the performance of the propulsion are given.Unlike the case of the two-dimensional flapping foil,the wing-tip vortices appear for the flow past a three-dimensional flapping wing,which makes the wake vortex structures much different.The results show that the leading edge vortex merges into the trailing edge vortex,connects with the wing tip vortices and then sheds from the wing.A vortex ring forms in the wake,and exhibits different patterns for different foil aspect ratios.Analysis of hydrodynamic performances shows that both thrust coefficient and efficiency of the flapping wing increase with increasing aspect ratio.

Abstract:Recent advance in flapping-wing MAVs has led to greater attention being paid to the interaction between the structural dynamics of the wing and its aerodynamics, both of which are closely related to the performance of a flapping wing. In this paper, an improved computational framework to simulate a flapping wing is developed. This framework is established by coupling a preconditioned Navier–Stokes solution and a co-rotational beam analysis with a restrained warping degree of freedom. Validation of the present framework is performed by a comparison with examples from either earlier analyses or experiments. Further, a numerical analysis of a wing under simultaneous pitching and plunging motion is examined. The results are compared with those obtained with a wing under pure plunging motion, in order to assess the additional motion effect within a spanwise flexible wing. The comparison shows different aerodynamic characteristics induced by the flexibility of the wing, which can be beneficial.

Abstract:The flow field of the foil with both the heave and pitch motion was simulated by using immersed-boundary method.The affection of the maximum pitch angle,flapping frequency and the phase difference of pitch and heave motion were analyzed systemically.It is shown that the reversed Kaman vortex street was generated,and then the foil get the positive thrust.The results also show that,with the increasing of maximum pitch angle,the foil's thrust coefficients increased first,then decreased,and increased with the increasing of frequency,the propulsive efficiencies increase with the increasing of maximum pitch angle whereas decrease with the increasing flapping frequency.The obtained results supply the foundational theoretical basis for the studies of bird flight and fish-swimming.

To maintain flight, insect-scale air vehicles must adapt to their low Reynolds number flight conditions and generate sufficient aerodynamic force. Researchers conducted extensive studies to explore the mechanism of high aerodynamic efficiency on such a small scale. In this paper, a centimeter-level flapping wing is used to investigate the mechanism and feasibility of whether a simple motion with certain frequency can generate enough lift. The unsteady numerical simulations are based on fluid structure interaction (FSI) method and dynamic mesh technology. The flapping motion is in a simple harmonic law of small amplitude with high frequency, which corresponds to the flapping wing driven by a piezoelectric actuator. The inertial and aerodynamic forces of the wing can cause chordwise torsion, thereby improving aerodynamic performance. The concerned flapping frequency refers to the structural modal frequency and FSI modal frequency. The study shows that this flapping motion can satisfy the requirements of lift to sustain the flight on this scale. At a certain frequency, the flapping wing can effectively utilize the strain energy storage and release mechanism of the flexible wing to provide sufficient lift. The modal frequency of the structure can amplify the deformation of the wing, but it cannot improve the aerodynamic performance, however, the aerodynamic efficiency can achieve the highest at the first order FSI modal frequency. There is a flapping frequency smaller than the first order FSI modal frequency maximizes the aerodynamic force in the vertical direction.

[Head and neck neurofibromas: analysis of 46 cases].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the surgical mode, recurrence and prognosis for patients with head and neck neurofibromas and explore their treatment strategies. METHODS The clinicopathological features, operation mode, prognosis and neural function of 46 patients with head and neck neurofibroma were analyzed retrospectively, and 41 of the cases were followed up for 24-170 months (median 74 months). RESULTS Among the 41 followed-up patients, 26 patients were cured and 15 patients were not cured (two died). The cure rate of the neurofibromas with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and the neurofibromas without NF1 were 42.9% and 85.0%, respectively (P = 0.005). The cure rate of localized, aggressive, diffuse and beaded neurofibromas were 100.0%, 46.6%, 40.0% and 66.7%, respectively (P = 0.009). The cure rate of radical resection (including expanding excision and complete resection) and partial resection were 73.5% and 14.3%, respectively (P = 0.011). The cure rates of expanding excision and partial resection were 80.0% and 14.3% (P = 0.029). The cure rates of complete resection and partial resection were 70.8% and 14.3%, respectively (P = 0.026). However, the cure rates of expanding excision and complete resection were not significantly different (P = 0.581). Multivariate Cox model analysis indicated that thoroughness of surgery was the independent risk factor for the prognosis for patients with head and neck neurofibromas. CONCLUSIONS Neurofibroma is a kind of aggressive benign tumors. Some neurofibromas have a high recurrence rate and low recovery rate, and some nerves are essay to be injured in the operation. Lots of factors impact on the prognosis and recovery of the neural function. Therefore, operation opportunity and mode should be carefully selected.
"Effects of the Rotation Phase on the Average Lift of an Insect-Like Flapping Wing"

Abstract:Insect-like flapping wings are characterized by multi-degree-of-freedom motions at the wing base, which can be divided into two main movements: sweep and rotation. The phase difference between sweep and rotation motions is an important kinematic parameter that has a great influence on the wing lift. In this paper, the effect of the rotation phase on the average lift of a hawkmoth-like wing is investigated. Simulations were conducted using a Fluid-Structure Interaction co-simulation framework developed based on the multibody dynamics approach and an unsteady vortex-lattice method. The results show that maximum lift for the rigid wing is reached at an advanced phase of about 10%. For the flexible wing, maximum lift is reached at a delayed phase of about 5%. The reason for this difference could be the passive deformation of the flexible wing, which causes an advanced rotation phase at the wing tip. The obtained results are in good agreement with experimental results conducted by previous studies.
A novel 3D variational aeroelastic framework for flexible multibody dynamics: Application to bat-like flapping dynamics

Abstract:We present a novel three-dimensional (3D) variational aeroelastic framework for flapping wing with a flexible multibody system subjected to an external incompressible turbulent flow. The proposed aeroelastic framework consists of a three-dimensional fluid solver with delayed detached eddy simulation (DDES) and a nonlinear monolithic elastic structural solver for the flexible multibody system with constraints. Radial basis function (RBF) is applied in this framework to transfer the aerodynamic forces and structural displacements across the discrete non-matching interface meshes while satisfying a global energy conservation. The fluid equations are discretized using a stabilized Petrov-Galerkin method in space and the generalized-$\alpha$ approach is employed to integrate the solution in time. The flexible multibody system is solved by using geometrically exact co-rotational finite element method and an energy decaying scheme is used to achieve numerical stability of the multibody solver with constraints. A nonlinear iterative force correction (NIFC) scheme is applied in a staggered partitioned iterative manner to maintain the numerical stability of aeroelastic coupling with strong added mass effect. An isotropic aluminum wing with flapping motion is simulated via the proposed aeroelastic framework and the accuracy of the coupled solution is validated with the available experimental data. We next study the robustness and reliability of the 3D flexible multibody aeroelastic framework for an anisotropic flapping wing flight involving battens and membranes with composite material and compare against the experimental results. Finally, we demonstrate the aeroelastic framework for a bat-like wing and examine the effects of flexibility on the flapping wing dynamics.

Reconstruction of source distributions from sound pressures measured over discontinuous regions: multipatch holography and interpolation.

Abstract:In the present work, a method of alternating orthogonal projections is described in the context of near-field acoustical holography; it allows missing (or "not measured") data to be recovered, thus relieving the strictness of measurement requirements related to the use of the discrete Fourier transform. The method described here provides the detailed foundation for the patch holography procedure that has previously been introduced to mitigate finite measurement aperture effects by allowing the sound field to be iteratively extended beyond the measurement aperture. It is also shown that the latter iterative algorithm can be used regardless of the spatial distribution of measured data: i.e., patches can be discontinuous. Numerical simulations performed by using a synthetic sound field created by a point-driven, simply supported plate were used to demonstrate the latter point. In particular, a multipatch holography procedure is described that allows a source distribution to be reconstructed from the hologram pressure measured over multiple, unconnected patches. It is finally shown that a related approach allows spatial resolution enhancement by interpolation between measured points.
Numerical Study of the Aerodynamic Performance of Two Coaxial Flapping Rotary Wings Under Wake Interaction

Abstract:Flapping rotary wing (FRW) is a composite flapping wing layout proposed in the last decade for micro air vehicle (MAV) design. FRW flaps actively in the vertical direction coupled with passive horizontal rotation, ensuring that the high-lift mechanisms from wing flapping at low Reynolds numbers and the high aerodynamic efficiency of the rotary wing are applied in this wing layout. In actual MAV designs, multiple FRWs have various arrangements, one of which is the arrangement where FRWs locate coaxially and rotate in the same direction. In this type of arrangement, a complex flow interaction exists between wakes from the upper and lower wings, but it has never been focused on in previous research. Thus, this study investigates the effect of wake interaction on the aerodynamics of two coaxial FRWs by using the lattice Boltzmann method and explores the influence of rotation speed, flapping phase difference ( $$\Delta \theta$$ ), and wing vertical distance between two wings on the lift and rotating moment, which determine the rotation speed of actual FRW. With inverse flapping (i.e., $$\Delta \theta =\pi$$ ), the wings interact strongly, and the MAV can reach the maximum rotating moment. An increase in vertical distance between the two wings and rotation speed can weaken the interaction. Our design allows for high rotating speed and low wing loads, thereby reducing the torque requirements on the motor. This study can enhance our understanding of the complex wake interaction produced by multiple FRWs at low Reynolds numbers and provide theoretical guidance for the design of MAVs, especially FRW MAVs.
Numerical simulation of flow over flapping wings in tandem: wingspan effects

Abstract:We report direct numerical simulations of a pair of wings in horizontal tandem configuration, to analyze the effect of their aspect ratio on the flow and the aerodynamic performance of the system. The wings are immersed in a uniform free-stream at Reynolds number Re = 1000, and they undergo heaving and pitching oscillation with Strouhal number St = 0.7. The aspect ratios of forewing and hindwing vary between 2 and 4. The aerodynamic performance of the system is dictated by the interaction between the trailing edge vortex (TEV) shed by the forewing and the induced leading edge vortex formed on the hindwing. The aerodynamic performance of the forewing is similar to that of an isolated wing irrespective of the aspect ratio of the hindwing, with a small modulating effect produced by the forewing-hindwing interactions. On the other hand, the aerodynamic performance of the hindwing is clearly affected by the interaction with the forewing's TEV. Tandem configurations with a larger aspect ratio on the forewing than on the hindwing result in a quasi-two-dimensional flow structure on the latter. This yields an 8% increase in the time-averaged thrust coefficient of the hindwing, with no change in its propulsive efficiency.

Abstract:The flexibility of insect wings and model wings in flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) is crucial to guarantee an economic flight. Since the wing deformation is bilaterally coupled with the aerodynamic force, conventional simulations on this fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problem mostly build up their models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational solid dynamics (CSD) methods, which requires high computational costs. Alternatively, an analytical model is proposed here for a quick estimate of the aerodynamic performance and passive deformation on flexible flapping wings. The deformation is simplified into a rigid-body rotation at the wing root, a spanwise twist, and a shortening along the span. The aerodynamic force is approximated by a predictive quasi-steady model and the spanwise twist is modeled using a quadratic polynomial. Results show that the introduction of wing flexibility can attenuate the lift generation due to the negative rotational lift and adverse translation–rotation coupling effect after each stroke reversal. The wing with moderate stiffness is recommended to achieve a high lift. An increase of aspect ratio and root cutoff can also enhance the dimensional lift generation, while the most economic wing design has an aspect ratio around 5 and no root cut-off. More importantly, the increase of flapping frequency can only result in a lift enhancement within certain limits. However, the power consumption keeps increasing as the frequency goes up, indicating a significant breakdown of performance. Our findings can uncover the role of wing flexibility in both insects and FWMAVs and therefore contribute to the design of FWMAVs.

Engineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics

Abstract:Wing flexibility controls the aerodynamic-force generation of flapping-wing flyers. As the wing flaps through the air, it is subjected to both aerodynamic force acting on the surface of the wing and inertial force due to the acceleration or deceleration of the wing’s mass. The interaction between these inertial-elastic and aerodynamic forces resulted in wing deformation. To study the effects of skin flexibility and wing deformation on the aerodynamic performance of a flapping wing, fluid flow and structural analyses (two-way fluid structure interaction) are implemented in real-time application through the Multi-Physics Code Coupling Interface, using FLUENT and ABAQUS solvers. The different bending stiffness ratios are highlighted at 2,489; 159 and 1, which correspond to rigid, flexible, and highly flexible cases, respectively. In the present research, wing flexibility is investigated at low Reynolds number (Re^9,000) and reduced frequency (k=1.92). To validate the numerical model, an experimental study was conducted, and the result of the mean aerodynamic lift and drag coefficient showed good agreement. The time-averaged aerodynamic performances, such as mean lift coefficient, drag coefficient, and lift-to- drag ratio, revealed that the aerodynamic performance of flapping wings increases with the increase in flexibility.
