Abstract:Highlights • Electrochemical sensors used in methylparaben detection are investigated. • Commonly employed electroanalytical methods are compared. • Various procedures for electrode modification are outlined. • The performance of different developed strategies is compared. Background The impact of methylparaben on human and ecosystem health has been controversial since this synthetic preservative was introduced to the industry in the 1930s. At first, it was considered that this phenolic compound was safe, but recent studies have proven that this claim might not be valid. Though more investigations need to be carried out regarding this subject, the assessment of this chemical substance, which has been labeled as estrogen, an endocrine disruptor, and a potential carcinogen, is of great importance. Methods Electrochemical platforms have been demonstrated as reliable and cost-worthy methods to quantify methylparaben in different media compared to expensive conventional strategies owing to their unique features, such as simplicity, short response time, and high precision. Through the past two decades, various arrays of conductive materials on the nanoscale, such as carbon nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles, metal oxide nanostructures, nanocomposites, and even biological molecules, have been utilized to enhance the precision and selectivity of methylparaben electrochemical platforms. Findings This work presents a comparative study of different types of electrochemical strategies employed in methylparaben detection and quantification. Moreover, current challenges limiting the applicability of the developed platforms are discussed, and future perspective of the research in this field is outlined.
