Abstract:Studies have been carried out on the simultaneous determination of 8 phthalates, i. e. di-ethyl phthalate (DEP) , di-propyl phthalate (DPP) , di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP) , dibutyl phthalate (DBP) , benzyl butyl phthalate ( BBP) , di-cyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) , di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-octyl phthalate (DOP) and 4 parabens, i. e. methylparaben (MPB), ethylparaben (EPB), propyl paraben (PPB), and butyl paraben (BPB) by gas chromatography in combination with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in electron ionisation mode (EI) with selected-ion monitoring (SIM) acquisition method. The phthalates and parabens in 15 cosmetic products, including hair sprays, perfumes, deodorants, cream, lotion, etc. were determined. The determination of the samples were performed after sonication-assisted extraction with methanol, cleaned up with an LC-C18 column (3 mL) and analyzed by GC/MS method. The base peak (m/z 149) of the phthalates and the base peak (m/z 121) of the parabens were selected for the screening studies. The characteristic ions, m/z 121, 149, 177, 222 for DEP; m/z 149, 191, 209 for DPP; m/z 57, 149, 223 for DIBP; m/z 104, 149 for DBP; m/z 91, 132, 149, 206 for BBP; m/z 55, 149, 167 for DCHP; m/z 113, 149, 167, 279 for DEHP; m/z 149, 279 for DOP; m/z 65, 93, 121, 152 for MPB; m/z 93, 121, 138, 166 for EPB; m/z 93, 121, 138, 180 for PPB; and m/z 93, 121, 138, 194 for BPB were chosen for quantitative studies. These techniques are capable to detect phthalates and parabens at the level of 0. 1 -5. 0 microg/kg. Overall recoveries were 80% - 100% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 10%. Only one of the 15 examined samples was free from phthalates and parabens. The rest 14 samples were found to contain at least 3 or more of these phthalates and/or parabens. The predominant phthalates detected in the studied samples were MPB, PPB, DPP, DCHP and DEHP. The residue levels were at 1. 42 -4 278 mg/kg.

Abstract:A novel 4 + 2 covalent magnetic organic framework (COF) with core-shell structure was synthesized for the first time with N, N, N', N'-Tetrakis (4-aminophenyl)-1, 4- benzenediamine (TPDA) and 2, 6-Pyridinedicarboxaldehyde (PCBA) at room temperature. The synthesized magnetic TPDA-PCBA-COF has a large specific surface area and superparamagnetism, which makes it an ideal sorbent for trace analytes enrichment. To this end, we combined it with magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) to enrich trace parabens in environmental water. The parameters affecting the enrichment efficiency of magnetic solid phase extraction, such as the amount of Fe3O4@TPDA-PCBA-COF, extraction time, pH of samples, salt concentration, desorption solvent volume and desorption time, were optimized. A simple method for extraction and determination of parabens in water samples by MSPE combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was established under optimized conditions. The validation results revealed that the linear ranges were at 1.0-5.0 × 102 ng mL-1 with R value between 0.9915 and 0.9999, the spiked recoveries were in the range of 82.8% to 99.9% and RSDs were lower than 10%. The method was further applied to the determination of parabens in water samples, with recoveries in the range of 82.2% to 110.0% and RSDs ≤ 7.7%. These results suggest that the magnetic TPDA-PCBA-COF could be used as a promising adsorbent for efficient extraction and quantitation of parabens in environmental water samples.

Abstract:Covalent organic framework (COF)–decorated magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @DhaTab) with core–shell structure have been synthesized by one-pot method. The prepared Fe 3 O 4 @DhaTab was well characterized, and parameters of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) for parabens were also investigated in detail. Under optimized conditions, the adsorbent dosage was only 3 mg and extraction time was 10 min. The developed Fe 3 O 4 @DhaTab-based MSPE-HPLC analysis method offered good linearity (0.01–20 μg mL −1 ) with R 2 (0.999) and low limits of detection (3.3–6.5 μg L −1 ) using UV detector at 254 nm. The proposed method was applied to determine four parabens in environmental water samples with recoveries in the range 64.0–105% and relative standard deviations of 0.16–7.8%. The adsorption mechanism was explored and indicated that porous DhaTab shell provided π-π, hydrophobic, and hydrogen bonding interactions in the MSPE process. The results revealed the potential of magnetic-functionalized COFs in determination of environmental contaminants. Graphical abstract

Abstract:As an emerging marine pollutant, parabens have attracted more and more attention due to their widespread existence and potential toxicity in living organisms. In this work, a sensitive and accurate ultrasound-assisted liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) method, followed by a combination of nanoscale electrospray mass spectrometry detection technique, was proposed to determine the trace parabens in high salinity water sample. The method used only one organic solvent for the extraction and ionization of the target in simulated seawater samples. The extraction/ionization of salts is restrained due to their microsolubility or even insolubility in the extraction solvent (also spray solvent), which greatly enhanced the signal intensity of the target analytes and achieved desalination in the mass spectrometry. Several parameters that affect the extraction and ionization efficiencies were investigated. Under the optimal conditions (extraction solvent, 800 μL ethyl acetate; volume ratio of sample to organic phase, 6:1; extraction time, 7 min; nano-tube, a-nanotube; ionization voltage, 2.3 kV), the proposed method was effectively implemented for the detection of five parabens in different real water samples (seawater water and domestic water). The results showed that the limits of detection ranged between 0.21 and 1.11 ng mL −1 . In addition, satisfactory accuracy and precision were obtained in real seawater samples for all parabens. This study demonstrated that the combination of LLE and nanoscale electrospray technology is suitable for detecting analytes in high salinity such as seawater.

Abstract:In this work, phenyl-functionalized magnetic graphene/mesoporous silica composites (MG-mSiO(2)-Ph) were prepared and applied as restricted access matrix solid phase extraction (RAM-SPE) adsorbents to determine the parabens in commercially available retail cosmetics. MG-mSiO(2)-Ph composites were synthesized by a surfactant -mediated co-condensation reaction in which mesoporous silica with phenyl-functionalized pore-walls was coated on a magnetic graphene sheet. The obtained nano-composites were proven to be of sufficient quality for an ideal RAM-SPE adsorbent with a large specific surface area of 369 m(2) g(-1), uniform mesopores of 2.8 nm, and special phenyl-functionalized pore-walls. Parabens, such as methyl paraben, ethyl paraben and propyl paraben, were extracted from water-based skin toners using one step of the RAM-SPE and were then analysed by a HPLC-DAD system. The SPE conditions were optimized by studying the parameters, such as the adsorbent amount, elution solvent type, adsorption time and desorption time, that influence the extraction efficiency. For each analyte, there were good linearities of approximately 0.10-120 mu gmL(-1) with determination coefficients (R-2) > 0.995. The sensitivity was as low as 0.01-0.025 mu Lg mL(-1) for the LOD, and the percent recoveries were 98.37-105.84%. The intra-day and inter-day RSDs were 1.44-6.11% (n = 6) and 3.12-11.70% (n=6), respectively. The results indicated that this method with novel RAM-SPE adsorbents is sensitive and convenient. The results also offered an attractive alternative for the extraction and determination of paraben preservatives in a complex matrix, such as cosmetics. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The separation and determination of four parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl p-hydroxybenzoate) which are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetic products, by micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) with and without large-volume sample stacking (LVSS) technique were compared. As an effective on-line concentration technique, LVSS was successfully combined with MEKC to determine neutral parabens in an acidic media. The effects of some typical parameters such as sample volume, buffer pH, temperature, and concentration of surfactant were examined. The detection limits for this LVSS-MEKC method were found to be 3.0 x 10(-7)M for each of the parabens based on the signal-to-noise ratio of 3, which were around 300 times lower than normal MEKC technique. The curves of peak response versus concentration were linear from 1.0 x 10(-6) to 5.0 x 10(-5)M with regression coefficients of 0.9987, 0.9960, 0.9925 and 0.9864, respectively. A simple and easy-manipulative sample preparation method was developed and validated by analyzing commercially available cosmetic samples. It was found that with current sample preparation process and instrumentation system, 0.5 g of sample is enough for the analysis of parabens preservatives in cosmetic product with satisfactory results.
Β-Ketoenamine Covalent Organic Frameworks Based Magnetic Solid-Phase Microextraction for Rapid Determination of 12 Organophosphate Esters in Surface Water

Abstract:In this work, Fe3O4/Tp-BHBD beta-ketoenamine covalent organic framework (COF) was rapidly prepared. Then, it was used as magnetic solid phase microextraction (MSPE) adsorbents for the adsorption and determination of organophosphate ester (OPE) residues in surface water coupling with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The results of material characterization tests confirmed the generation of magnetized COF. The adsorption process was optimized by Box-Behnken Design and one-factor optimization experiments. After five use cycles, Fe3O4/Tp-DHBD still achieved good adsorption and high recovery. Under the optimal conditions, the developed Fe3O4/Tp-DHBD COF-MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS method obtained good linearity for 12 OPEs within 0.25-50.0 ng mL-1 and the limit of detection of 0.02-0.18 ng mL-1. The relative standard deviations were less than 8.6 %. Rapid detection and analysis of three samples from wastewater treatment plant showed that the recoveries of most of target OPEs at different spiked concentrations ranged from 62.0 % to 116.9 %, 60.9 %-115.1 %, and 60.4 %-112.9 %, respectively. In general, the established COF-MSPE method can provide convenient and satisfactory purification for OPEs compounds in surface water by adsorption and desorption, which is promising for specific applications.
A Deep Eutectic Solvent as an Extraction Solvent to Separate and Preconcentrate Parabens in Water Samples Using in situ Liquid-Liquid Microextraction

Abstract:In this study, an in situ deep eutectic solvent-liquid-liquid microextraction method together with high performance liquid chromatography was developed for the determination of parabens in aqueous sample. The hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent, formed in situ by the DL-menthol and decanoic acid was used as the extraction solvent. Various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency including the composition of deep eutectic solvent, temperature of sample solution, extraction time, solution pH and salt concentration were investigated and optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the linear range of calibration curves was in the range of 3-1000 ng mL-1. The limits of detection and limits of quantification were in the range of 0.6-0.8 and 2.0-2.5 ng mL-1, respectively. The relative standard deviations were less than 7.2% for both intra-day and inter-days analysis. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to determine four parabens in environmental water samples with acceptable recoveries.

Abstract:Efficient magnetic solid phase extraction using crystalline porous polymers can find important applications in food safety. Herein, the core-shell Fe3O4@COFs nanospheres were synthesized by one-pot method and characterized in detail. The porous COF shell with large surface area had fast and selective adsorption for propylparaben via 7C-7C, hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. The extraction and desorption parameters were evaluated in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the extraction equilibrium was reached only in 5 min, the maximum adsorption capacity for propylparaben was 500 mg g(-1 )and the proposed Fe3O4@DhaTab-based-MSPE-HPLC-UV method afforded good linearity (4-20000 mu g mL(-1)) with R-2 (0.997), low limits of detection (0.55 mu g L-1) and limits of quantification (1.5 mu g L-1 ). Furthermore, the developed method was applied to determine propylparaben in soft drinks with the recoveries (97.0-98.3%) and relative standard deviations (0.61 to 3.75%). These results revealed the potential of Fe3O4@DhaTab as efficient adsorbents for parabens in food samples.
Trace analysis of parabens preservatives in drinking water treatment sludge, treated, and mineral water samples

Abstract:Parabens have been widely used as antimicrobial agents, mainly in food products, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Although they are known as safe preservatives, they also cause some harm to human health, which has been discussed lately. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of nine parabens (including isomers) in mineral and drinking waters, besides in drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS) samples with determination by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Both methods solid phase extraction (SPE) and QuEChERS were validated. Calibration curves showed a correlation coefficient of 0.99 for all compounds. LOQ values ranged from 0.04 to 4 μg L−1 in aqueous matrices and from 5 to 500 ng g−1 in DWTS. Recoveries between 70 and 115% were reached with RSD below 20% for all compounds in SPE whereas recoveries between 62 and 119% were found with RSD below 20% for almost all compounds in QuEChERS. Matrix effect had low values (< 20%); it was only above 20% for methylparaben in the SPE and for pentylparaben in the QuEChERS. Using a quick and simple extraction procedures with SPE, QuEChERS, and LC-MS/MS analyses, these methods proved to be selective and sensitive. They were successfully applied to real samples (treated water, mineral water, and sludge), and methylparaben was detected at concentration levels below 0.242 μg L−1 in mineral and treated water samples and 10 ng g−1 in DWTS samples.

Abstract:A rapid, simple, and precise simultaneous determination method of 4 kinds of bisphenols (BPs) in environmental water was developed based on the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technology. Water samples were firstly extracted by the prepared magnetic polydopamine sulfonic acid group-zirconium metal-organic frameworks (Fe3O4 @PDA@Zr-SO3H-MOF) nanocomposites using the magnetic solid-phase exaction (MSPE) technique. Adsorption tests showed that the prepared material possess superior hydrophilicity and ultrahigh surface area, as well as the strong magnetic responsiveness. When used as the MSPE sorbent for four bisphenols, Fe3O4@PDA@Zr-SO3H-MOF displayed good performance on extraction efficiencies, enrichment factors, and reusability. A linear relationship with a correlation coefficient greater than 0.998 and a relative standard deviations of 3.8-5.1% was achieved for the BPs concentration within the range of 0.05-200 μg /L. The detection limits and the quantification limits were between 0.0048-0.0073 μg/L and 0.016-0.024 μg/L, respectively. Overall, this method was successfully applied to determine BPs in practical water sample with the recovery between 93.1%-105.8%.

The type of extraction solvent, the volume ratio of sample to organic phase, the ultrasound-assisted extraction time, and the type of nano-tube and ionization voltage used in the nanoscale electrospray mass spectrometry analysis were optimized. Under optimal conditions, this proposed method was effectively implemented for the detection of five parabens in real seawater samples. The results showed that the limits of detection (LODs) lied within the range of 0.79 - 5.71 ng mL-1. The linear range was 50-2000 ng mL-1, with the relative standard deviations of less than 15.5% for all parabens. The results show that the combination of LLE and nanoscale electrospray technology is a simple, sensitive and rapid method for detecting analytes in real seawater.

Abstract:Parabens are frequently used preservatives in food and personal care products. These are also termed endocrine disruptors which have the potential to damage the endocrine system Therefore, an easy and facile extraction and detection of parabens are critically important. This work evaluates different magnetic sorbents such as Fe3O4@MIL‐101(Cr), Fe3O4@MIL‐101(Cr)@NH2, and Fe3O4@MIL‐101(Cr)@SO3H for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) and further selected Fe3O4@MIL‐101(Cr)@NH2 to determine paraben content in chili powder and facial toner samples. Fe3O4@MIL‐101(Cr)@NH2 is an efficient sorbent material specially designed for MSPE, which profoundly extracted nine parabens within a short span of just 6 min, driven by π–π interaction and hydrogen bonding. And a detailed optimization and LC–MS/MS analysis was carried out. Fe3O4@MIL‐101(Cr)@NH2 exhibited superior extraction efficiency, enabling subsequent quantification via LC–MS/MS. The limit of detection ranged from 0.063 to 0.622 ng mL−1 and limit of quantification of 0.211 to 2.073 ng mL−1 were a good recovery in the range of 76.2%–108%. An effective detection of eight parabens in chili powder and four parabens in facial toner samples was determined indicating that Fe3O4@MIL‐101(Cr)‐NH2 sorbents are suitable for MSPE.

Abstract:The fabrication of a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber through UV-induced polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG-DA) for determination of parabens in cosmetic products is presented in this work. The PEG-DA polymer coating was covalently attached to the fiber by introducing a surface modification with 3-(trichlorosilyl)propyl methacrylate (TPM). The PEG-DA polymer thin film coated on the fiber was homogeneous and wrinkled, which led to an increase of the surface area and high extraction efficiency. The extraction performances of the prepared SPME fibers were assessed by preconcentration of parabens including methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and benzylparaben from cosmetic products. The analysis was performed on an ultra high-speed liquid chromatography with diode array detector. The prepared SPME fibers exhibited good repeatability (for one fiber) and reproducibility (fiber-to-fiber) with RSDs of 5.4 and 6.9%, respectively. The optimized SPME method supported a wide linear range of 0.50-160 μg/mL and the detection limits for parabens were in the range of 0.12-0.15 μg/mL (S/N=3). The developed method was successfully applied for determination of parabens in cosmetic products with different natures.
Determination of parabens in breast milk using stir bar sorptive extraction coupled with UHPLC-UV

Abstract:We developed an analytical method based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection, using a stir bar coated with amino/hydroxyl bifunctional microporous organic network (B-MON), for the analysis of parabens in breast milk samples. B-MON demonstrated superior performance with maximal methylparaben adsorption of 112.15 mg/g. Kinetic fitting revealed that outer diffusion was the key limiting step, and the adsorption was chemisorption. The thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that increased methylparaben adsorption was found at higher temperatures in spontaneous processes. The developed approach showed excellent linearity (R 2 ≥ 0.9964) and a low detection limit (0.01 μg/L). Recoveries ranged from 85.8 to 105.5 % and the relative standard deviation was lower than 9.2 %. Based on the daily exposure assessment, these pollutants do not pose unacceptable health hazards to babies. However, the high detection frequencies (41.9%–93.5 %) suggest that breast milk still should be monitored.

A rapid and environmentally friendly method for determination of parabens preservatives in flavors by supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Abstract:A rapid method for determination of parabens preservatives (methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, isopropyl paraben, propyl paraben, isobutyl paraben, and butyl paraben) in flavors was established by using supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry combined with dispersive solid-phase extraction. After adding methanol and primary secondary amine to the sample simultaneously, high extraction efficiency and good sample cleanup could be obtained by simple shaking. Parabens were well separated on a Chiralpak IG-3 column in 6 min by gradient elution. Recoveries from spiked blank samples at 0.5, 1.0, and 5.0 mg/kg were determined to be 88.3-106.6%with relative standard deviations less than 8.0%. All analytes achieved good linear relation (r ≥ 0.999 2). The limits of detection for all analytes ranged from 0.03 to 0.09 mg/kg and the limits of quantification from 0.11 to 0.31 mg/kg, respectively. A total of 20 actual samples were successfully analyzed by taking the proposed method. Being simple, rapid, green, and reliable, this method can be taken for the determination of parabens preservatives in flavors.

Abstract:In this study, metal organic framework MIL-101 (Cr) was used as an adsorbent in the solid phase extraction of parabens before chromatographic analysis. Analytical parameters including pH, adsorption–desorption time, amount of adsorbent, elution solvents, desorption volume and salt effect were optimized. Optimum adsorbent amount and total adsorption and desorption time for determination of parabens were found to be 15 mg and only 10 min. The recovery values obtained with this method are in the range of 90.78–104.89% for water matrix and 85.19–108.35% for cosmetics. The detection limits of the HPLC method for methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl parabens are 0.0387, 0.0322, 0.0299, and 0.0339 ug/mL, respectively. Prior to HPLC analysis, a new, fast, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly solid phase extraction method based on vortex-assisted MIL-101 (Cr) adsorption was developed. This proposed VA-SPE-HPLC procedure was used for the extraction and determination of four different parabens from water and cosmetic samples.

Abstract:A novel high-throughput array analytical platform based on derived β-cyclodextrin supramolecular imprinted polymer (SMIP) fibers was constructed to achieve selective enrichment and removal of parabens. SMIP fiber arrays have abundant imprinting sites and introduce the host–guest inclusion effect of the derived β-cyclodextrin, which is beneficial to significantly improve the adsorption ability of fiber for parabens. Upon combination with HPLC, a specific and sensitive recognition method was developed with a low limit of detection (0.003–0.02 μg/L, S/N = 3) for parabens analysis in environmental water. This method has a good linearity (R > 0.9994) in the linear range of 0.01–200 μg/L. The proposed SMIP fiber array with high-throughput adsorption capacity has great potential in monitoring water pollution, which also provides a reliable reference for the analysis of more categories of pharmaceutical and personal care product pollutants.

Abstract:A magnetic polyimide (PI) nanocomposite has been synthesized by phase inversion of PI and simultaneous encapsulation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The Fe 3 O 4 /PI nanocomposite was characterized by a variety of characterization techniques, including infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The results showed that the prepared nanocomposite had a homogeneous structure, adequate specific surface area (76.1 m 2 /g) and high saturation magnetization (42.9 emu/g). Using parabens as model analytes, the performance of the Fe 3 O 4 /PI nanocomposite as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) was evaluated. The extracted parabens were desorbed and determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The parameters affecting the extraction and desorption efficiency of parabens were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the developed MSPE/GC–MS method was successfully applied to the determination of parabens in cooking wine. The MSPE/GC–MS method exhibited broad linearity (0.2–100 μg/L), low detection limits (0.04–0.05 μg/L), and satisfactory extraction recoveries (79.2%–113.3%) with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 0.7% to 10.4%. For real cooking wine samples, the spiked recoveries ranged from 91.7% to 118.7% with RSDs of 1.0%–11.2%. The results demonstrated that the Fe 3 O 4 /PI nanocomposite was an effective adsorbent, and this work provides a novel reference for the easy preparation of magnetic adsorbent materials.

Abstract:Objectives: Parabens, which are p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters, are used as preservatives in personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and food because of their antimicrobial activity. However, they are also classified as suspected endocrine disruptors and carcinogens. In the present study, we aimed to optimize an ultrasound and vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) procedure for the simultaneous extraction of methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, propyl, isobutyl, and butyl parabens from personal care products and urine. Materials and methods: The extraction solvent type, extraction solvent volume, disperser solvent volume, sodium chloride concentration, ultrasonication time, and vortex application time were evaluated to obtain optimum recoveries by ultrasound and vortex-assisted DLLME. Parabens were detected using a validated high performanc-liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with fluorescence detection. Method validation was performed by examining linearity, the limit of detection, limit of quantification, accuracy, and precision. Results: The limits of detection and quantification of the HPLC method were between 0.09-0.18 μg/mL and 0.28-0.54 μg/mL, respectively. Precision was examined as the relative standard deviation, which was 0.22-1.81% and 1.12-2.03% for intra- and interday studies. Recovery percentages were higher than 96.00%. Samples of two paraben-free personal care products and synthetic urine were spiked with the analyses at 0.02 μg/mL and were successfully analyzed using the developed procedure with recovery values higher than 82.00%. Conclusion: The proposed procedure provided quantification of selected parabens at 20 ng/mL in analyzed personal care products and urine matrices with good precision and accuracy.
