Abstract:A sensitive and accurate ultrasound-assisted liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method, followed by a combination of nanoscale electrospray mass spectrometry detection technique, is proposed to determine the presence of preservatives in seawater samples. The method uses only one extraction solvent for liquid-liquid extraction of seawater samples, hindering the desorption/ionization of salts to achieve desalination, and therefore, greatly enhancing the signal intensity of the target analytes in the mass spectrometry. The type of extraction solvent, the volume ratio of sample to organic phase, the ultrasound-assisted extraction time, and the type of nano-tube and ionization voltage used in the nanoscale electrospray mass spectrometry analysis were optimized. Under optimal conditions, this proposed method was effectively implemented for the detection of five parabens in real seawater samples. The results showed that the limits of detection (LODs) lied within the range of 0.79 - 5.71 ng mL-1. The linear range was 50-2000 ng mL-1, with the relative standard deviations of less than 15.5% for all parabens. The results show that the combination of LLE and nanoscale electrospray technology is a simple, sensitive and rapid method for detecting analytes in real seawater.
