Abstract:The realization of water electrolysis on the basis of highly active, cost-effective electrocatalysts is significant yet challenging for achieving sustainable hydrogen production from water. Herein, N-doped Ni3 S2 /N-doped MoS2 1D hetero-nanowires supported by Ni foam (N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF) are readily synthesized through a chemical transformation strategy by using NiMoO4 nanowire array growth on Ni foam (NiMoO4 /NF) as the starting material. With the in situ generation of Ni3 S2 /MoS2 heterointerfaces within nanowires and the incorporation of N- anions, an extraordinary hydrophilic nature with abundant, well-exposed active sites and optimal reaction dynamics for both oxidation and reduction of water are obtained. Attributed to these properties, as-converted N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF exhibits highly efficient electrocatalytic activities for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions under alkaline conditions. The superior bifunctional properties of N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF enable it to effectively catalyze the overall water-splitting reaction.

Abstract:Developing clean and sustainable energies as alternatives to fossil fuels is in strong demand within modern society. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the efficiency-limiting process in plenty of key renewable energy systems, such as electrochemical water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. In this regard, ongoing efforts have been devoted to seeking high-performance electrocatalysts for enhanced energy conversion efficiency. Apart from traditional precious-metal-based catalysts, nickel-based compounds are the most promising earth-abundant OER catalysts, attracting ever-increasing interest due to high activity and stability. In this review, the recent progress on nickel-based oxide and (oxy)hydroxide composites for water oxidation catalysis in terms of materials design/synthesis and electrochemical performance is summarized. Some underlying mechanisms to profoundly understand the catalytic active sites are also highlighted. In addition, the future research trends and perspectives on the development of Ni-based OER electrocatalysts are discussed.

Abstract:The preparation of hydrogen by electrolysis of water has the characteristics of easily available raw materials, simple process and eco-friendly, which has aroused the interest of many researchers. However, the inherent high reaction energy barrier and four-electron reaction mechanism of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) lead to large reaction overpotential, slow reaction rate and high energy consumption, resulting in low hydrogen evolution efficiency of the cathodic half-reaction, which greatly limits its practical application. Ni3S2 has a heazlewoodite structure. Due to the inherent Ni–Ni metal network, it has near-metal conductivity, which has attracted great attention in the application of electrocatalytic OER. Therefore, this article reviews the application of Ni3S2 and its composites in OER. The composition, structure and electrochemical catalytic performance were systematically summarized. It can be believed that Ni3S2-based materials will have a wide application prospect as OER electrocatalysts in the future.

Abstract:Abstract The study of hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts for water electrolysis is a developing field in which noble metal-based materials are commonly used. However, the associated high cost and low abundance of noble metals limit their practical application. Non-noble metal catalysts, aside from being inexpensive, highly abundant and environmental friendly, can possess high electrical conductivity, good structural tunability and comparable electrocatalytic performances to state-of-the-art noble metals, particularly in alkaline media, making them desirable candidates to reduce or replace noble metals as promising electrocatalysts for water electrolysis. This article will review and provide an overview of the fundamental knowledge related to water electrolysis with a focus on the development and progress of non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts in alkaline, polymer exchange membrane and solid oxide electrolysis. A critical analysis of the various catalysts currently available is also provided with discussions on current challenges and future perspectives. In addition, to facilitate future research and development, several possible research directions to overcome these challenges are provided in this article. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The precise design and development of high-performing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for the production of industrial hydrogen gas through water electrolysis has been a widely studied topic. A profound understanding of the nature of electrocatalytic processes reveals that Ni-based catalysts are highly active toward OER that can stably operate at a high current density for a long period of time. Given the current gap between research and applications in industrial water electrolysis, we have completed a systematic review by constructively discussing the recent progress of Ni-based catalysts for electrocatalytic OER at a large current density, with special focus on the morphology and composition regulation of Ni-based electrocatalysts for achieving extraordinary OER performance. This review will facilitate future research toward rationally designing next-generation OER electrocatalysts that can meet industrial demands, thereby promoting new sustainable solutions for energy shortage and environment issues.

Abstract:Sustanable carbon-neutral sociey in future requres to develop efficient chemical conversion systems from solar light energy to CO2-free fuels such as H2 alternative to fossil ones. Water splitting driven by solar energy is one of the most promising approaches for sustinable H2 production. The critical bottleneck to establish efficient water splitting systems has remained in sluggish oxygen evolution reactions (OER) with insufficiently low overpotentials (ηO2). Development of highly efficient OER electrocatalysts to minimize ηO2 is a challenging key task to attain efficient water splitting. Recently, there has been prominent progress on development of efficient Ni-based electrocatalysts providing extremely low ηO2. Herein, the aspects and mechanisms for state-of-the-art Ni-based OER electrocatalysts reported in recent three-year from 2020 to 2023 were reviewed. We will discuss perspectives to develop efficient Ni-based OER electrocatalysts based on comprehensive understanding of catalysts introduced in this review.

Abstract:This review summarizes the challenges, strategies, and advances of NiFe‐based OER electrocatalysts envisioned as next‐generation industrial electrodes for alkaline water electrolysis. Comprehensive progress in fundamentals, synthetic protocols, and rational design methodologies of performant NiFe‐based catalysts for practical application are elaborated. Developing high‐efficiency alkaline water splitting technology holds great promise in potentially revolutionizing the traditional petrochemical industry to a more sustainable hydrogen economy. Importantly, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) accompanied at the anode is considered as a critical bottleneck in terms of both complicated mechanism and sluggish kinetics, requiring rational design of OER electrocatalysts to elucidate the structure‐performance relationship and reduce the applied overpotential. As a benchmarked non‐precious metal candidate, NiFe‐based electrocatalysts have gained enormous attention due to low‐cost, earth‐abundance, and remarkable intrinsic OER activity, which are expected to be implemented in industrial alkaline water splitting. In this contribution, a comprehensive overview of NiFe‐based OER electrocatalysts is provided, starting with fundamental mechanisms, evaluation metrics, and synthetic protocols. Subsequently, basic principles with corresponding regulatory strategies are summarized following the sequence of substrate‐catalyst‐electrolyte design of efficient and robust NiFe‐based electrocatalysts toward industrial‐scale deployment. Perspectives on remaining challenges and instructive opportunities in this booming field are finally discussed.

Abstract:Water electrolysis provides a promising pathway for the large-scale production of hydrogen as a clean fuel, which plays an important role in the transition to a low-carbon or even no-carbon economy. Despite the considerable efforts undertaken to study non-precious metal electrocatalysts, there has been a scarcity of researches enlarging their application to industrial water splitting. The development of NiFe-based catalysts has been a significant interest due to their high activity and stability at high-current densities, which are expected to be broadly applicable. Given the discrepancy between laboratory and industrial water electrolysis, tremendous attentions have been focused on the advanced NiFe-based electrocatalysts. This review presents a summary of three principal strategies: intrinsic activity, superhydrophilic/superaerophobic surface properties, and scale-up fabrication. It provides essential guidance and solutions for the prospective design of industrial NiFe-based electrocatalysts, with the objective of facilitating high-quality advancement of the new energy industry and thereby alleviating the energy crisis.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting using renewable energy sources has been recognized as a sustainable way to produce hydrogen energy due to the characteristics of low-carbon and no pollution. However, the slow hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) seriously hinder the practical application of large-scale water splitting. In this paper, the 0D Ni/Co-based hollow material is discussed in detail because of adjustable morphology, low mass density and abundant active sites, which provides an effective solution for improving the HER/OER reaction kinetics. The synthesis methods of hollow materials, such as hard template, soft template and self-template are introduced. Afterward, catalysts with different structural designs of hollow structures are reviewed, including hollow single-shelled structure, hollow core-shelled structure, hollow double-shelled structure and hollow multi-shelled structure (HoMS) catalysts. Wherein, the research progress of the 0D Ni/Co-based HoMS electrocatalysts in recent years and their prominent performances in water splitting are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and development prospects of designing Ni/Co-based HoMS catalysts in water splitting in the future are discussed.

Abstract:<p>Hydrogen is a clean and renewable energy carrier for powering future transportation and other applications. Water electrolysis is a promising option for hydrogen production from renewable resources such as wind and solar energy. To date, tremendous efforts have been devoted to the development of electrocatalysts and membranes for water electrolysis technology. In principle, water electrolysis in acidic media has several advantages over that in alkaline media, including favorable reaction kinetics, easy product separation, and low operating pressure. However, acidic water electrolysis poses higher requirements for the catalysts, especially the ones for the oxygen evolution reaction. It is a grand challenge to develop highly active, durable, and cost‐effective catalysts to replace precious metal catalysts for acidic water oxidation. In this article, an overview is presented of the latest developments in design and synthesis of electrocatalysts for acidic water oxidation, emphasizing new strategies for achieving high electrocatalytic activity while maintaining excellent durability at low cost. In particular, the reaction pathways and intermediates are discussed in detail to gain deeper insight into the oxygen evolution reaction mechanism, which is vital to rational design of more efficient electrocatalysts. Further, the remaining scientific challenges and possible strategies to overcome them are outlined, together with perspectives for future‐generation electrocatalysts that exploit nanoscale materials for water electrolysis.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Trifunctional electrocatalysis for the oxygen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, and hydrogen evolution reaction constitutes the bottleneck of various sustainable energy devices and systems including rechargeable metal–air batteries and overall water splitting. Emerging macroscopically nanostructured catalysts are strongly requested for superior electrocatalytic activities and practical applications. Here, a 3D hydroxysulfide monolith with anion‐regulated NiFe hydroxysulfide nanosheets is rationally proposed. With abundant active sites and unique structure, the as‐obtained hydroxysulfide monolith exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance in oxygen evolution, hydrogen evolution, and oxygen reduction in alkaline electrolyte. When directly serving as electrodes, a small charge/discharge voltage gap of 0.76 V at 2.0 mA cm −2 and a high peak power density of 248 mW cm −2 are achieved for the liquid Zn−air batteries, and a low cell voltage of 1.62 V at 10 mA cm −2 is detected for water splitting units. When two Zn−air batteries are serially connected to power the water splitting unit, bulky O 2 and H 2 bubbles are continuously generated on both the composite electrodes. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for controllable anion regulation and rational design of the 3D self‐supporting hydroxysulfides, which is also enlightening for other advanced energy materials and diverse applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen is now widely regarded as most suitable to replace fossil fuels for it burns clean, producing only water and has the highest energy density per unit mass. However, hydrogen is not freely available in nature and needs to be produced, either from water or other compounds. Alkaline water electrolysis offers a simple method for mass production of hydrogen but suffers from the sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction, calling for the development of low-cost and durable oxygen evolution electrocatalysts with high activity. In this work, we report an enhanced electrocatalytic activity on water splitting with NiOx nanoflakes electrode fabricated via selective etching and reconstruction of NiW amorphous films. It was found that the highly electrocatalytic activity was attributed to the increase of specific surface area of the electrode as well as the change of valence states of nickel. It is anticipated that the modification of as-fabricated nanostructured electrodes with bandgap engineering which is under way will further improve the efficiency and prolong the durability, making them potential and more attractive in addressing the pressed technological issues.

Abstract:In this study, oxidation-resistive deficient TiO 2-x supported NiFe-based electrocatalysts were developed towards efficient and durable water splitting performance. The oxidation-resistive deficient TiO 2-x support with oxygen vacancies ensures good stability and electrical conductivity of the catalyst. The decorated NiFe and NiFeP nanosheets serve as efficient catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. In 1.0 M KOH, the 2-x and 2-x electrode show low overpotential for OER (300 mV) and HER (273 mV) at 100 mA cm -2 , respectively, and excellent stability performance in overall water splitting as well. In-situ Raman and theoretical analysis reveal that the in-situ formed Fe 3+ -doped NiOOH species are essential in catalyzing OER on 2-x , particularly the electron localization of surface Fe-O bonds offers lower energy barriers for OER elemental reactions and thus enhance its catalytic activity. This work provides an oxide-based catalyst support strategy for the development of stable and active overall water splitting catalysts and advances the insights on catalytic origin of NiFe-based catalysts as well.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of fundamental importance as a half reaction and rate-controlling step that plays a predominant function in improving the energy storage and conversion efficiency during the electrochemical water-splitting process. In this review, after briefly introducing the fundamental mechanism of the OER, we systematically summarize the recent research progress for nonprecious-metal-based OER electrocatalysts of representative first-row transition metal (Fe, Co and Ni)-based composite materials. We analyze the effects of the physicochemical properties, including morphologies, structures and compositions, on the integrated performance of these OER electrocatalysts, with the aim of determining the structure-function correlation of the electrocatalysts in the electrochemical reaction process. Furthermore, the prospective development directions of OER electrocatalysts are also illustrated and emphasized. Finally, this mini-review highlights how systematic introductions will accelerate the exploitation of high-efficiency OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The construction of active sites with intrinsic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance to overcome the limited efficiency of abundant sustainable energy devices such as fuel cells, rechargeable metal-air batteries, and in water splitting. Anionic regulation of electrocatalysts by modulating the electronic structure of active sites significantly promotes OER performance. To prove the concept, NiFeS electrocatalysts are fabricated with gradual variation of atomic ratio of S:O. With the rise of S content, the overpotential for water oxidation exhibits a volcano plot under anionic regulation. The optimized NiFeS-2 electrocatalyst under anionic regulation possesses the lowest OER overpotential of 286 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and the fastest kinetics being 56.3 mV dec(-1) to date. The anionic regulation methodology not only serves as an effective strategy to construct superb OER electrocatalysts, but also enlightens a new point of view for the in-depth understanding of electrocatalysis at the electronic and atomic level.

Abstract:Fe-nitrogen-carbon (Fe–N–C)- and Co-nitrogen-carbon (Co–N–C)-based electrocatalysts have been widely concerned because of their high OER/ORR activity, low metal cost, and simple preparation. The exploration of Fe–N–C and Co–N–C single atom-based catalysts with high activity and stability to overcome the slow kinetics of oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions is also the key to the development of efficient electrolytic water, fuel cells, and rechargeable metal–air batteries. Fe–N–C and Co–N–C single atom-based electrocatalysts have the advantages of a high utilization rate of metal atoms and high electrocatalytic activity, and are ideal catalysts for promoting electrochemical energy conversion and storage The general principles of designing Fe–N–C and Co–N–C single atom-based electrocatalysts are reviewed in this paper Then, the strategies to improve the bifunctional catalytic activity and stability are proposed Finally, the challenges and prospects of Fe–N–C and Co–N–C single atom-based catalysts are well summarized. This review will provide a reference for the directed optimization of Fe–N–C and Co–N–C single atom-based catalysts.
