Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays key roles in the energy efficiency of electro-catalytic systems. However, the sluggish kinetics and accumulated gas slugs under the industrial operation condition limit the application of OER. Herein, Mn, Fe co-doped nickel hydroxide with highly dense nano-sheets array is obtained through a simple and mild two-step etching strategy, which exhibits a remarkable OER performance. Doping Mn and Fe can modulate the electronic structure and redox behavior of active site, leading to an excellent intrinsic activity toward OER. Moreover, highly dense nanoparticle-nanosheet array structure is conducive to provide more active sites and inhibit the accumulation of gas slugs under industrial current density. Thus, the obtained catalyst provides an impressing current density of 1.8 A cm(-2) at a small overpotential of 370 mV and sustains the performance more than 100 h.

Abstract:The development of a low-cost and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrode is of critical importance for water electrolysis technologies. The general approach to achieving a high-efficiency OER electrode is to regulate catalytic material structures by synthetic control. Here we reported an orthogonal approach to obtaining the OER electrode without intentional design and synthesis, namely, recycling MnO2 cathodes from failed rechargeable aqueous batteries and investigating them as ready-made catalytic electrodes. The recycled MnO2 cathode showed very little Zn2+ storage capacity but surprisingly high OER activity with a low overpotential of 307 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 77.9 mV dec-1, comparable to the state-of-the-art RuO2 catalyst (310 mV, 86.9 mV dec-1). In situ electrochemical and theoretical studies jointly revealed that the accelerated OER kinetics of the recycled MnO2 electrode was attributed to the enlarged active surface area of MnO2 and optimized electronic structure of Mn sites. This work suggests failed battery cathodes as successful catalysis electrodes for sustainable energy development.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of fundamental importance as a half reaction and rate-controlling step that plays a predominant function in improving the energy storage and conversion efficiency during the electrochemical water-splitting process. In this review, after briefly introducing the fundamental mechanism of the OER, we systematically summarize the recent research progress for nonprecious-metal-based OER electrocatalysts of representative first-row transition metal (Fe, Co and Ni)-based composite materials. We analyze the effects of the physicochemical properties, including morphologies, structures and compositions, on the integrated performance of these OER electrocatalysts, with the aim of determining the structure-function correlation of the electrocatalysts in the electrochemical reaction process. Furthermore, the prospective development directions of OER electrocatalysts are also illustrated and emphasized. Finally, this mini-review highlights how systematic introductions will accelerate the exploitation of high-efficiency OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing clean and sustainable energies as alternatives to fossil fuels is in strong demand within modern society. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the efficiency-limiting process in plenty of key renewable energy systems, such as electrochemical water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. In this regard, ongoing efforts have been devoted to seeking high-performance electrocatalysts for enhanced energy conversion efficiency. Apart from traditional precious-metal-based catalysts, nickel-based compounds are the most promising earth-abundant OER catalysts, attracting ever-increasing interest due to high activity and stability. In this review, the recent progress on nickel-based oxide and (oxy)hydroxide composites for water oxidation catalysis in terms of materials design/synthesis and electrochemical performance is summarized. Some underlying mechanisms to profoundly understand the catalytic active sites are also highlighted. In addition, the future research trends and perspectives on the development of Ni-based OER electrocatalysts are discussed.

Abstract:The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) can be combined with various cathodic reactions to enable the electrochemical synthesis of diverse chemicals and fuels, particularly in water electrolysis for hydrogen production. It is however exhibiting a high overpotential due to the sluggish four-electron transfer process, which is considered the decisive reaction in energy conversion systems. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as the ideal catalysts for accelerating OER. This is primarily because of their orderly porous architecture, structural tailorability, and compositional diversity. This review systematically summarizes the recent research progress in pristine MOF electrocatalysts for OER, which covers the construction strategies and electrocatalytic performance of more than eight types of MOFs. Additionally, the partial/complete structural reconstructions and their effects on MOF-based OER electrocatalysts are highlighted. In particular, the development process of “discovery, explanation, and utilization” for the structural reconstructions of MOF electrocatalysts is outlined. Furthermore, the catalytic mechanisms are elaborated in detail, aiming to provide insight into the rational design and performance optimization of MOF-based OER electrocatalysts. The challenges and future perspectives of MOF-based OER electrocatalysts for industrial applications are also discussed.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a core reaction responsible for converting renewable electricity into storable fuels; yet, it is kinetically challenging, because of the complex proton-coupled multielectron transfer process. Transition-metal-based electrocatalysts, which provide the possibility for the realization of low-cost, high-activity, and stable OER in alkaline solution, therefore have attracted significant research interest in recent years. A fundamental understanding of composition–structure–activity relationships for these electrocatalysts is essential to guide the design of practical electrocatalysts for industrial applications. With more advanced ex situ and in situ techniques to determine the active sites, there has been increasing evidence revealing the critical role of Fe in the high performance of Fe-containing transition metal-based electrocatalysts. Here, we present a critical review of recent progress in Fe-containing electrocatalysts for OER, highlighting the significant role of Fe in enhancing the OER activity. We outline the historical development of the Fe-containing electrocatalysts, summarize the conflicting viewpoints on catalytic active sites, and offer guidelines for more rigorous identification. The synthesis techniques and the major challenges in improving the intrinsic catalytic activity and stability are discussed. Finally, a perspective regarding emerging issues yet to be explored for developing OER electrocatalysts for practical applications are also provided.

Abstract:With the extensive use of fossil energy, people will face the depletion of fossil energy and increasingly severe problems. As a non-polluting, high specific energy density energy source, hydrogen energy is expected to solve this problem by producing hydrogen through electrolysis of water through renewable energy power generation. Water electrolysis technology involves two important half-reactions: the cathode hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The OER is a 4-electron transfer process with a high energy barrier. In order to achieve higher energy conversion, OER catalyst technology is a key part of the process. Researchers have conducted a lot of research into high-performance, high-stability, and highly economical OER catalysts, among which oxyhydroxide (MOOH), as an active substance for OER, has received particular attention. This article provides a timely follow-up to the research on oxyhydroxides, first introducing the two catalytic mechanisms of OER, namely the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice-oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM). Then, strategies are proposed to improve OER catalytic performance by increasing catalytic active surface area/active sites, optimizing intermediate adsorption energy based on the AEM, triggering the LOM, and enhancing catalyst stability. Finally, the challenges and future development directions of MOOH catalysts are analyzed, which provides guidance for the design and preparation of high-performance OER catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the core electrode reaction in energy-related technologies, such as electrolytic water, electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction, rechargeable metal-air batteries, and renewable fuel cells. Development of well-stocked, cost-effective, and high-performance OER electrocatalysts is the key to the improvement of energy efficiency and the large-scale commercial implementation of these technologies. Multicomponent transition metal oxides and (oxy)hydroxides are the most promising OER catalysts due to their low cost, adjustable structure, high electrocatalytic activity, and outstanding durability. In this review, a brief overview about the mechanisms of OER is first offered, accompanied with the theory and calculation criteria. Then, the latest advances in the rational design of the related OER electrocatalysts and the modulation of the electronic structure of active sites are comprehensively summarized. Specifically, various strategies (including element doping, defect engineering, and fabrication of binderless catalysts) used to improve the OER performance are detailedly discussed, emphasizing the structure—function relationships. Finally, the challenges and perspectives on this promising field are proposed.

Achieving a Long-Term Stability by Self-Redox Property Between Fe and Mn Ions in the Iron-Manganese Spinel Structured Electrode in Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency electrode for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) in water-electrolysis systems is an important challenge. Four types of spinel-structural materials (Mn3O4, Fe3O4, MnFe2O4, and Mn2FeO4) are prepared as OER electrocatalysts. The spinel MnFe2O4/NF electrode exhibits the best OER activity in a 1.0 M KOH alkaline electrolyte. The required electrode potential to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) is only 1.54 V (with eta = 310 mV), and a low Tafel slope of 65 mV dec(-1) is obtained. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of MnFe2O4/NF before and after OER found out that OER activity was promoted due to oxygen vacancies in the spinel lattice, and the high catalytic activity was maintained for a long time by the self-redox property between Mn and Fe ions. Finally, the corrosion resistance, which is directly related to the catalytic activity and stability of MnFe2O4/NF, is demonstrated through a 3000th-repeated OER acceleration stability and 1000 h-durability tests, with a high faradaic efficiency of 95.2%. Eventually, this study presents a new paradigm for energy production that enables the continuous and easy generation of hydrogen and oxygen via water electrolysis using high-performance and inexpensive iron-manganese-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), namely, so-called oxygen electrode reactions, are two fundamental half-cell reactions in the energy storage and conversion devices, e.g., zinc–air batteries and fuel cells. However, the oxygen electrode reactions suffer from sluggish kinetics, large overpotential and complicated reaction paths, and thus require efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Transition-metal-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and their derivatives have displayed excellent catalytic performance, suggesting a major contribution to accelerate electrochemical reactions. The rational regulation of electronic structure, defects, and coordination environment of active sites via various functionalized strategies, including tuning the chemical composition, structural architecture, and topotactic transformation process of LDHs precursors, has a great influence on the resulting electrocatalytic behavior. In addition, an in-depth understanding of the structural performance and chemical-composition-performance relationships of LDHs-based electrocatalysts can promote further rational design and optimization of high-performance electrocatalysts. Finally, prospects for the design of efficient and stable LDHs-based materials, for mass-production and large-scale application in practice, are discussed.

Abstract:Designing efficient electrocatalysts without noble metals is an imperative challenge for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) application used in the water-splitting field. However, the low catalytic stability and conductivity impede the industrial application. Herein, the cobalt-substituted manganese oxide (MnCo-O) monolayer nanosheet was exfoliated via intercalation, and the nickel iron double hydroxide (NiFe-OH) nanosheet served as a highly active composition. The oppositely charged MnCo-O and NiFe-OH nanosheet would stack into the superlattice (MnCo/NiFe) with alternating layers of ∼1 nm. Using potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution as the electrolyte, the MnCo/NiFe composite material delivered superior OER performances, which showed a small overpotential (233 mV) at current density of 10 mA cm−2 and low Tafel slope (46 mV dec–1). Such a catalyst could further present long-term catalytic durability of more than 50 h with almost no attenuation. This study develops a scalable strategy to simultaneously achieve a distinctive structure at a low cost for a high-performance noble-metal-free electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Abstract The discovery of Mn-Ca complex in photosystem II stimulates research of manganese-based catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, conventional chemical strategies face challenges in regulating the four electron-proton processes of OER. Herein, we investigate alpha-manganese dioxide (α-MnO 2 ) with typical Mn IV -O-Mn III -H x O motifs as a model for adjusting proton coupling. We reveal that pre-equilibrium proton-coupled redox transition provides an adjustable energy profile for OER, paving the way for in-situ enhancing proton coupling through a new “reagent”— external electric field. Based on the α-MnO 2 single-nanowire device, gate voltage induces a 4-fold increase in OER current density at 1.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Moreover, the proof-of-principle external electric field-assisted flow cell for water splitting demonstrates a 34% increase in current density and a 44.7 mW/cm2 increase in net output power. These findings indicate an in-depth understanding of the role of proton-incorporated redox transition and develop practical approach for high-efficiency electrocatalysis.

Abstract:High-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial for water splitting and metal-air batteries. Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) has become a new class of efficient OER electrocatalysts due to the rich coordination unsaturated metal nodes, large specific surface area, and adjustable structures. In addition, because inheriting the original microstructure of MOFs and having stronger chemical and mechanical stability, metal/alloy/oxide, metal sulfide/selenide/phosphide, and other compounds derived from 2D MOFs have also shown their unique OER catalytic ability. Here, we briefly introduced the existing reaction mechanism and evaluation parameters of catalyst performance of OER, introduced the synthesis methods and corresponding characterization techniques of 2D MOFs and their derivatives, and summarized the latest progress of 2D MOFs and their derivatives as OER catalysts. Finally, we put forward some views and suggestions on the existing problems hindering the development of 2D MOFs as OER for advancing the field.

The metal oxyhydroxide formed in the OER process due to the surface reconstruction and phase transition is the intrinsic active species for the OER. In addition, the promoted oxygen evolution is possibly activated by a peroxo‐like (O22−) species through a combined lattice‐oxygen‐oxidation and adsorbate‐escape mechanism.

Abstract:The development of efficient and long-term stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key to harness hydrogen energy by water electrolysis. In this work, tungsten oxide decorated iron-nickel oxide heterostructure was grown on nickel skeleton by hydrothermal synthesis through simultaneously chemical etching reaction and decomposition of transition metal oxalate, forming porous WO 3 /Fe 2 O 3 -NiO/NF composite. The decoration of WO 3 creates WO 3 /Fe 2 O 3 -NiO heterostructure interface with high-density heterometal-oxygen bridge sites, which can effectively modulate the intrinsic electronic structure of the catalyst and optimize the adsorption energy of the reaction intermediates, thus accelerate the OER through the adsorbate evolution mechanism. In addition, abundant oxygen vacancy (V O ) sites induced by high valence W 6+ further boost OER activity through the lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism. With the unique porous interfacial structure, the as-synthesized WO 3 /Fe 2 O 3 -NiO/NF exhibits remarkable OER electrocatalytic activity with low overpotential of 211 mV at OER current density of 100 mA cm -2 , and high stability at 100 mA cm -2 with overpotential fluctuates within ± 2.8% range during the 100 h test. The as-proposed method is effective in lowering the overpotential of OER, and may be applicable for other electrochemical energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays an important role in many energy conversions and storage technologies, such as water splitting, rechargeable metal air batteries, renewable fuel cells, and electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction and nitrogen reduction, but its slow kinetics and high overpotential seriously affect the energy efficiency. Fabrication of high-performance and well-stocked OER catalysts is the key to the large-scale implementation of these energy-related technologies. Two-dimensional (2D) materials get a lot of attention as OER catalysts due to their large specific surface area, abundant active sites, and adjustable structures and compositions. Here, an overview is presented for the latest achievements in design and synthesis of 2D materials (including layered double hydroxides, metal-organic frameworks and their derivatives, covalent-organic frameworks, graphene, and black phosphorus) for the OER, emphasizing novel strategies (including metal/nonmetal doping, defect engineering, interface engineering, lattice strain, and fabrication of heterojunction) for achieving high electrocatalytic activity. Peculiarly, the structure-function relationship is analyzed in detail to gain deeper insight into the reaction mechanism, which is crucial to rational design of more high-performance 2D materials for the OER. Finally, the remaining challenges to improve the OER performance of 2D electrocatalysts are put forward to indicate possible future development of 2D materials.
