Abstract:One-dimensional column and two-dimensional tank experiments were carried out to determine (1) the physics of foam flow and propagation of foaming gas, foaming liquid, and foam; (2) the pressure distribution along foam flow and the effect of media permeability, foam flow rate and foam quality on foam injection pressure; and (3) the migration and distribution property of foam flow in homogeneous and heterogeneous sediments. The results demonstrated that: (1) gas and liquid front were formed ahead of the foam flow front, the transport speed order is foaming gas. foaming liquid. foam flowing; (2) injection pressure mainly comes from the resistance to bubble migration. Effect of media permeability on foam injection pressure mainly depends on the physics and behavior of foam flow; (3) foam has a stronger capacity of lateral spreading, besides, foam flow was uniformly distributed across the foam-occupied region, regardless of the heterogeneity of porous media.

Abstract:Fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoir played a significant role in unconventional reservoirs, but it was difficult to be developed due to its complex reservoir types. Therefore, it was crucial to find a suitable development program to enhance oil recovery. In this work, a two-dimensional visual physical model of fractured-vuggy reservoir was designed and fabricated according to actual geological data and injection-production characteristics of a representative fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoir, Tahe Oilfield in China. Nitrogen flooding experiment, nitrogen flooding under the high gas energy experiment, nitrogen flooding under strong bottom water energy experiment and foam assisted nitrogen gas flooding experiment were carried out respectively by using two-dimensional visual model. The flow behaviors and the main mechanisms for enhanced oil recovery were revealed by analyzing the oil displacement performance in the visual physical model. Experiment results showed that the gas cap energy and the bottom water energy played a synergistic effect in the nitrogen flooding. The stronger the bottom water energy was, the larger the gas spread area was, and the increase of oil recovery would be very high. If the gas injection rate was too strong, the dominant gas flow channel would be formed prematurely, and the oil recovery was little increase. In addition, foam could effectively control the gas mobility, delay the formation of gas channeling. Meanwhile, the oil recovery of foam assisted nitrogen gas flooding was higher 12% than that of nitrogen flooding. Therefore, the mechanism for improving the degree of development was obtained mainly through gravity differentiation to form the secondary gas top and realize the development of the remaining oil.

Abstract:Foam has been widely used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in recent years. Its flow and propagation within fractures play a pivotal role in mitigating the channelling issues arising from reservoir heterogeneity. In this work, two visual fracture models were designed to simulate the in situ generation, static evolution, and propagation of foam in fractures. The effects of the gas holdup and fracture surface roughness on the number and shape of bubbles were investigated. The influences of foam quality, fracture surface roughness, and fracture aperture on foam propagation and volume changes during the flow process were systematically analysed. The results indicated that increasing the fracture surface roughness promoted the in situ generation of bubbles. With increasing gas holdup, the average diameter and relative volume of the bubbles gradually increased and then decreased. In particular, when the gas holdup was greater than 80 %, the bubble changed more obviously. Within fractures, bubbles underwent continuous drainage, coarsening, and coalescence, leading to a transition in foam shape from regular spherical to irregular polyhedral, accompanied by the gradual thinning of the liquid film until rupture. However, the foam occupied a larger volume within the fracture than before. From top to bottom along the fracture vertical direction, due to significant gravity, the foam quality increased and the foam mobility increased gradually, exhibiting low-flow velocity foam, high-flow velocity foam, and a liquid phase. The liquid drainage rates of foam were low and the area occupied by foam in the fracture expanded as the foam quality increased, surface roughness increased and the fracture aperture narrowed. This phenomenon was significant for expanding the foam propagation in fractures.

Abstract:Deep fractured vuggy reservoirs are characterized by complex structures, harsh formation conditions and strong heterogeneity. Accordingly, foam stability was first assessed under high-temperature, high-pressure conditions. A microetched physical model mimicking the fractured vuggy reservoir was constructed. Then, the static features of the foam in the model was inspected. The flow characteristics and EOR mechanism of foam flooding in the microetched model were analyzed. Foam stability results show that at low pressures, the foam volume first increases and then decreases with increasing temperature. With increasing pressure, the influence of temperature on foam stability gradually declines. Within the microetched model, the foam displayed better fluidity in karst caverns, whereas better static stability is attained in the fractures. Gravity impacted oil recovery during water and foam flooding. Bottom water flooding induced uniform rise of the oil-water interface, hence achieving highest oil recovery of 49%. Foam flooding following helped recovering residual oil near the top of the caverns. Employing high-velocity foam flooding following low-velocity foam flooding increased the sweep efficiency of oil entrapped in the dead-end pores. Coupling bottom water flooding with foam flooding is the most promising technique.

Abstract:Nitrogen injection technology has become an important production technology after water injection development in the karst fracture-vuggy reservoir in Tahe Oilfield. However, due to the influence of reservoir heterogeneity and the high mobility of gas fluid, nitrogen easily forms a dominant channel and gas channeling occurs, and the recovery effect time is short. Based on this, a visual surface karst model is designed and created to study nitrogen foam-assisted gas drive. The results show that after gas channeling occurs in the dominant channel of nitrogen flooding, foam injection-assisted gas flooding can improve oil recovery. In the longitudinal direction, foam-assisted gas drive mainly displaces the remaining oil because of gravity differentiation and the reduction of oil–water interfacial tension. In the horizontal direction, foam-assisted gas drive is mainly used to block the large pore cracks and dominant channels, promote the gas to turn into large tortuous and small cracks, and expand the swept efficiency of the gas. After forming the dominant channel, injecting 0.3 pv salt-sensitive foam with a gas–liquid ratio of 2:1 in the middle of the gas channel can improve the recovery rate of the model from 4% to about 25%, and the recovery rate can be increased by about 20%, which improves the effect of gas flushing and improves the development efficiency of the oil field at the same time.

Abstract:Gas flooding and foam flooding are potential technologies for tertiary oil recovery in fractured-vuggy reservoirs. The development and mechanism research of fractured-vuggy reservoirs is difficult due to the complex structures and the strong heterogeneity of fractured-vuggy reservoirs. Visualization simulation is one of the effective methods to study the flow behavior of fluid in fractured-vuggy reservoirs. In this study, an upscaling method of visualization simulation from one dimension (1D) to three dimensions (3D) was established, and the physical models of fractured-vuggy reservoirs were designed and fabricated. Water flooding, gas flooding, and gel foam flooding were carried out in the models. The experimental results showed that gas flooding has a single flow channel and water flooding has multiple flow channels in fractures and vugs. Gel foam with an excellent capability of mobility control and a high microscopic displacement efficiency swept in all directions at a uniform velocity. The EOR mechanisms of gel foam in fractured-vuggy reservoirs were mainly as follows: reducing interfacial tension, increasing mobility ratio, selectively plugging high permeability channels, and discontinuous flow. In the displacement process of fractured-vuggy reservoirs, water should be injected from the well at the bottom of the reservoir, and gas should be injected from the well located in the vug at the high part of the reservoir. Gel foam with strong stability and high viscosity should be selected and injected in most kinds of injection wells in fractured-vuggy reservoirs. This study provides a complete method of visualization simulation for the study of flow behavior in fractured-vuggy reservoirs and provides theoretical support for the application of gas flooding and gel foam flooding in fractured-vuggy reservoirs.
Dynamic Behaviors and Mechanisms of Air-Foam Flooding at High Pressure and Reservoir Temperature via Microfluidic Experiments

Abstract:Air injection has been proven to be an effective improved oil recovery technique for deep and light oil reservoirs with low permeability and poor water injectivity. But the efficiency of air injection in highly heterogeneous reservoirs is low due to poor gas sweeping that may lead to early oxygen breakthrough caused by gas channeling and viscous fingering. Foam can be used to assist air injection to overcome the obstacles of early gas breakthrough and to increase the displacement and sweeping efficiency. In this paper, laser-etched visual microscopic pore models were used as microfluidic devices to study the air-foam flooding process in porous media at reservoir temperature and high pressure. The dynamic behaviors and relevant mechanisms of air-foam flooding were investigated. Typical mechanisms of foam generation in porous media are achieved in different parts of the micromodel, which can be listed as follows: lamella leave-behind, lamella division, and snap off. Analysis on flow states of air foam showed that foams migrate in porous media by bursting and regenerating during the flooding process. It can be observed that the flow mode of foam in porous media is the separate flow of gas and liquid through microscopic displacement experiments, suggesting that foam should not be treated as a homogeneous phase in heterogeneous porous media. The pressing, occupying, and selective blocking effects of foam in porous media exhibited different oil displacement performances with the presence of various pore geometries and networks. Tiny foams also showed stripping and carrying effects on larger oil droplets benefiting from the lipophilicity of foam. Through comprehensive analysis on overall and local oil displacement mechanisms, air-foam injection could enhance the microscopic sweep volume and improve the oil displacement efficiency.
Quantitative Characterization of Foam Transient Structure in Porous Media and Analysis of Its Flow Behavior Based on Fractal Theory

Abstract:Foam fluid is widely used in petroleum industry, so the behavior of the foam fluid flow in porous media directly affects the application effect of foam. However, the foam flow pattern in porous media is difficult to be established because of its dynamic change of interface structure and unpredictable boundary condition. In this work, the transient structural changes of the foam fluid in porous media are quantitatively characterized, and the flow behavior is analyzed based on fractal theory and visual experiments. First, the foam fractal characteristics are verified, and the fractal dimension is calculated. Results show that the foam fractal dimension is between 1.5 and 2.0, and the foam flow can be divided into three stages: gas–liquid two-phase flow, foam unstable flow stage, and foam stable flow stage. In addition, the evaluation indices of foam performance in porous media are proposed to evaluate the influencing factors, namely, the fractal dimension in stable stage Dfoam-s and the time needed to reach stability Ts. The analysis shows that the larger concentration of the surfactant and the lower permeability correspond to smaller Dfoam-s and the larger temperature corresponds to larger Dfoam-s, and Dfoam-s of the nitrogen foam is smaller than that of the carbon dioxide foam. Ts is the opposite. Last, the relationship between fractal dimension, pressure, and gas saturation is discussed. Qualitative analysis shows that the larger the displacement pressure, the smaller the foam fractal dimension and the higher the gas saturation, the smaller the foam fractal dimension. This paper provides a new method to explore the flow behavior of foam flow in formation, which has a certain significance for guiding the field application of the foam fluid.

Abstract:The fracture network in fractured reservoirs is the main channel for fracturing fluid intrusion and gas flow, and the presence of liquid has a great influence on the gas flow pattern, and the gas flow shows more diversity in fluids with different properties such as fracturing fluid or formation water. In order to study the characteristics of gas-liquid two-phase flow in the microfracture network of the fractured gas reservoir, the topology of the microfracture network is simplified to T-junction and Y-junction. Based on the volume of fluid model, the gas-liquid two-phase flow interface is tracked. The model is solved by computational fluid dynamics software OpenFOAM, and the correctness of the model is verified by comparing it with laboratory microscopic experiment results. The flow characteristics of the gas phase in different fluids at the microscale and the influence of fluid parameters on flow pattern are analyzed. The results show that the properties of the liquid phase have a strong influence on the gas flow pattern, and the two-phase flow velocity and the properties of fluid parameters affect the gas flow to reach the stable state. The findings of this study can be used for reference to analyze the flow characteristics of gas in fracturing fluid and the flowback technology of fracturing gas well.

Experimental Study on the Effect of Microheterogeneity on Multiphase Flow in a Microscopic Visualization Model

Abstract:Nitrogen foam flooding has been widely used in fossil fuel reservoirs for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). However, from a microscopic perspective, the effects of microheterogeneity in various pore structures on both multiphase flow characteristics and EOR during foam flooding after water flooding have not yet been systematically investigated. Therefore, combining computed tomography scanning, casting thin section observations, and microelectronic photolithography, a visual micromodel with three permeability zones was developed. The microheterogeneity in different permeability zones was quantitatively characterized by integrating constant-rate mercury injection data with the fractal theory; then, some experiments were carried out to simulate water and foam flooding injection. Afterward, the multiphase flow characteristics and EOR mechanisms in the zones with different pore structures that exhibited microheterogeneity were analyzed. Finally, the remaining oil distribution and the improvement effect of nitrogen foam flooding in different permeability zones were quantified. The experimental results reveal the following findings: (1) during both water and foam flooding, the flow characteristics vary among the three permeability zones, and the effect of microheterogeneity is greater than that of permeability. The water flooding EOR (59.03%) in the high-permeability zone with the strongest heterogeneity is lower than that in the homogeneous medium-permeability zone (68.48%). (2) For different permeability zones, there are various methods to regenerate foam, which may significantly improve the heterogeneity in the intralayer (microheterogeneity of the pore structure) and interlayer (different permeability zones), and a stronger microheterogeneity results in a greater EOR. Therefore, the EORs in the high-, medium-, and low-permeability zones are 16.39, 8.43, and 14.64%, respectively. (3) Six types of remaining oil may be trapped and occur at various locations. Foam flooding may greatly reduce the remaining oil in the form of flakes and clusters, while the proportion of remaining oil in the form of thin films and columns may increase by 4.36 and 1.44%, respectively. This quantitatively characterizes the EOR micromechanism of foam flooding that transforms contiguous remaining oil into dispersed remaining oil. (4) The gas fraction in foam may gradually decrease from high- to low-permeability zones, indicating that foam is mostly in some larger pores and results in the flow of the liquid toward smaller pores or lower-permeability zones to further expand the sweep area. At the microscopic pore scale, the EOR mechanism of foam flooding that large pores, not small pores, are blocked and the sweep volume is expanded is demonstrated.

Abstract:Hydrofluoroether C4F9OCH3, as a foaming agent in liquid CO2, is used to stabilize bubble in liquid CO2-based foam fracturing fluid which is waterless and no damage to oil-gas reservoir. However, characteristics of this environmental friendly CO2-based foam, such as the foam morphology and its flow behaviors in pipe, are insufficiently understood. Especially, foam quality, one of important characteristic parameters in a foam fluid, has significant effects on foam structure and flow behaviors of CO2-based foam. By means of the flow tests in pipes with different diameters, it was found that the CO2-based foam displayed wall slip phenomenon, and Oldroyd-Jastrzebski method was used to deal with this phenomenon. Effective viscosity of this CO2-based foam, as well as convective heat transfer coefficient initially increases and then decreases with the increase of foam quality. Due to dominant collision and friction among bubbles, their values reach the corresponding maximums when the foam quality is about 0.82. Meanwhile, the evolution of rheological parameters of CO2-based foam with the foam quality is shown as well, and the exponential relationship between yield stress and foam quality is illustrated. Additionally, as for the flow friction characteristics, it shows that fanning friction factor increases and drag reduction rate initially increases and then decreases as the foam quality is increased.

Abstract:The gas and water flow behavior in rough-walled hydrophilic fractures at the pore scale is crucial for understanding the gas production characteristics of naturally fractured formations. This paper presents a systematic analysis of the gas and water flow characteristics in both the single-fracture and Y-shaped junction fracture models using the volume of fluid (VOF) method. Numerical simulations showed that the gas/water rate ratio is the most significant factor influencing gas bubble/slug geometry, phase distribution, and saturation. The effect of fracture roughness and tortuosity is less significant than the gas/water ratio, whereas the total fluid rate has a negligible effect. For Y-shaped junction models, the phase distribution and referential pathways are predominantly controlled only by the channel aperture ratio, whereas the effect of the intersecting angle and fluid flow rate can be neglected.

Abstract:With the development of Tahe Oilfield entering the high water cut stage, gas channeling occurs in fractured-vuggy system during nitrogen injection, resulting in some inefficient wells. To improve the development effect of gas flooding, how to define the distribution of fracture, vuggy, and remaining oil has become one of the urgent problems to be solved at present. Microgravity monitoring technology uses high-quality data, the residual gravity anomaly of the target layer is obtained by depth recursion processing, the density distribution of the target layer is obtained by layer density inversion, and the fractured-vuggy distribution is depicted by edge detection. The results show that the lower part of the fractured-vuggy system in the north is connected to the middle, while the fractured-vuggy system in the south is directly connected to the middle, which leads to different effects of injected nitrogen. The early injected nitrogen in the SX area is mainly distributed in the north. Nitrogen injection in the north needs to reach a certain amount of gas before the middle can be effective. Nitrogen is injected in the south, and the central part is effective quickly. The research results provide a basis for adjusting injection-production scheme and improving reservoir development effect. Compared with the production performance and seismic interpretation results, it verifies the accuracy of ultradeep microgravity monitoring in depicting the development of fractured-vuggy system, which provides a new technology and idea for characterizing fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoirs.

Abstract:Field trials have demonstrated that foamed gel is a very cost-effective technology for profile modification and water shut-off. However, the mechanisms of profile modification and flow behavior of foamed gel in non-homogeneous porous media are not yet well understood. In order to investigate these mechanisms and the interactions between foamed gel and oil in porous media, coreflooding and pore-scale visualization waterflooding experiments were performed in the laboratory. The results of the coreflooding experiment in non-homogeneous porous media showed that the displacement efficiency improved by approximately 30% after injecting a 0.3 pore volume of foamed gel, and was proportional to the pore volumes of the injected foamed gel. Additionally, the mid-high permeability zone can be selectively plugged by foamed gel, and then oil located in the low permeability zone will be displaced. The visualization images demonstrated that the amoeba effect and Jamin effect are the main mechanisms for enhancing oil recovery by foamed gel. Compared with conventional gel, a unique benefit of foamed gel is that it can pass through micropores by transforming into arbitrary shapes without rupturing, this phenomenon has been named the amoeba effect. Additionally, the stability of foam in the presence of crude oil also was investigated. Image and statistical analysis showed that these foams boast excellent oil resistance and elasticity, which allows them to work deep within formations.

Abstract:Fractional flow analysis is an efficient tool to evaluate the gas-trapping performance of foam in porous media. The pore-scale simulation study and the core-scale experimental work have been bridged via the fractional flow analysis to distinguish the characteristics of foam displacement inside the tight porous media with varying absolute permeability, injection rate, and foam quality. In this work, the combined investigation suggests that conventional foam-enhancing strategies, pursuing higher foam quality and stronger foam regime, are inefficient and restricted in tight reservoirs that the critical Sw corresponding to the limiting capillary pressure has increased around 37~43%, which indicates severely weakened gas-trapping capacity as permeability reduces one order of magnitude. The moderate mobility adjustment and corresponding optimized fluid injectivity exerting from the "weak foam" flow presents a staged decline feature of decreasing water fractional flow, which implies the existence of the delayed gas-trapping phenomenon when water saturation reduces to 0.5~0.6. The finding has supported the engineering ideal of promoting low-tension gas (LTG) drive processes as a potential solution to assist field gas injection applications suffering from gas channeling. Also, the validation with core-flooding experimental results has revealed several defects of the current pore network model of foam displacement in tight porous media, including exaggerated gas trapping and overestimated confining water saturation. This study has innovatively demonstrated the feasibility and potential of optimizing the foam performance of gas trapping and mobility control in tight reservoirs, which provides a clue that may eventually boost the efficiency of the gas injection process in enhanced oil recovery or CO2 sequestration projects.

Abstract:The evaluation of flow dynamics in fractured shale oil reservoirs presents significant challenges due to the complex pore configurations and high organic material concentration. Conventional methods for petrophysical and fluid dynamic evaluations are insufficient in addressing these complexities. However, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology is an effective technique for quantitatively delineating fluid micro-transport properties across the reservoir core. This study presents an experimental methodology rooted in NMR technology to quantify the flow capabilities within the shale oil matrix. This approach incorporates high-pressure saturation flow experiments across seven distinct core samples to gauge the micro-transport phenomena of fluids across various pore dimensions. The results revealed that under high-pressure saturation, shale cores devoid of fractures demonstrated an average crude oil saturation rate of merely 19.44%. Cores with evident stratification exhibited a 16.18% increase in flow capacity compared to their non-stratified counterparts. The flow dynamics within these shale reservoirs exhibited a range of behaviors, from non-linear to linear. In lower-permeability zones, non-linear patterns became increasingly apparent. An NMR T2 spectrum analysis was used to identify the minimum effective pore size conducive to shale oil flow within the matrix, which was between 8 and 10 nanometers. These insights provide a foundation for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind oil and gas migration in fractured shale oil matrices, offering valuable insight into their extractive potential.

Abstract:This study focuses on the characteristics of foam generation, flow, and plugging in different reservoir fracture environments. Through visual physical model experiments and stone core displacement experiments, we analyze the flow regeneration of foam in a simulated reservoir fracture environment as well as its sealing and sweeping mechanisms. The findings reveal that low permeability reservoirs, with their smaller and more intricate fracture structures, are conducive to the generation of high-strength foam. This is due to the stronger shear effect of these fracture structures on the injected surfactant and gas mixture system, resulting in a denser foam system. Consequently, low permeability reservoirs facilitate a series of mechanisms that enhance the fluid sweep efficiency. Furthermore, the experiments demonstrate that higher reservoir fracture roughness intensifies the shear disturbance effect on the injected fluid. This disturbance aids in foam regeneration, increases the flow resistance of the foam, and helps to plug high permeability channels. As a result, the foam optimizes the injection-production profile and improves the fluid sweep efficiency. Stone core displacement experiments further illustrate that during foam flooding, the foam liquid film encapsulates the gas phase, thereby obstructing fluid channeling through the Jamin effect. This forces the subsequently injected fluid into other low-permeability fractures, overcoming the shielding effect of high-permeability fractures on low-permeability fractures. Consequently, this improves the fluid diversion rate of low permeability fractures, effectively inhibiting fluid cross-flow and enhancing sweep efficiency. These experimental results highlight the advantages of foam flooding in the development of complex reservoirs with low permeability fracture structures, demonstrating its efficacy in inhibiting fluid cross-flow and optimizing the injection-production profile.

Abstract:In-depth water flooding profile modification is a new problem for low permeability formation under fracturing. Profile control study for in-depth cross flow which couples fracture and matrix is neither comprehensive nor complete at present. Artificial hydraulic fracturing core is manufactured to conduct core flood experiment. In-depth profile modification mechanisms of gel-nitrogen-foam are revealed based on microstructure analysis and mechanical stability evaluation. The instantaneous stability and durability of gel-nitrogen-foam are evaluated by breakthrough pressure and residual resistance factor. Weak movement ability restrains the distribution of gel in cross zone and bubble burst effect declines the active time of nitrogen-foam. Gel-nitrogen-foam displays promised profile modification performance based on synergistic effect which combines movement ability of nitrogen-foam and durability of gel. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) test result shows that sweep area of matrix significant increases after profile modification, which indicates that enhance oil recovery (EOR) main contributes by the remaining oil in matrix nearby injection fracture. The optimized gas/liquid ratio and injection volume are 1.95 and 2.8 PV separately with incremental EOR of 9.74%. Coupling laboratory experiment with numerical simulation, this work offers a new insight of in-depth cross flow profile modification mechanism for formation under fracturing from macroscopic and microscopic views.
