Abstract:The seeded semicontinuous emulsion multi-copolymerization of butyl acrylate (BA),2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2EHA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxyl propyl acrylate(HOPA) and acrylic acid (AA) was used to prepare the acrylic latexes with high-solidcontent. The effects of monomer emulsion feed rates (R_a) and (R/E)_E values, the ratio ofemulsifier amount between the initial charge (R) and the addition monomer emulsion (E),on the polymerization reaction features, the viscosities, surface tensions,particle sizes andparticle sizes distributions of latexes,T_g and the insoluble fractions of films, the 180° peelstrength, tack and holding power of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes, preparedfrom the latexes, were studied. Experimental study shows that the grafting and cross-linking fraction in the PSA tapes must be controlled within a suitable range to keep thebalance of the 180° peel strength, tack and holding power.

Abstract:The copolymer emulsion of polyurethane-acrylate-vinyltriethoxysilane(KH570) was prepared with sodium laurylsulfate and OP-10 as emulsifiers by pre-emulsion process.The structure of copolymer and latex particle morphology were characterized by IR and TEM.The influence of amount of KH-570,temperature and pH value on copolymerization rate was discussed.The results showed that the copolymer contains siloxane groups and the latex particles ranged from 50～100 nm.The conversion rate decrease with increase of the quantity of KH-570 and decrease of the temperature.Incorporation of KH-570 can improve the water resistance of the coatings film significantly.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent researches and developments on surfactants in latex paints.Special attention is put on the use of emulsifiers in latex polymerization and latex paints. The important roles of emulsifiers in polymer latex and latex paint system and the competitive adsorption between surfactants in paint formulations are discussed. The advantage of polymerizable surfactants as emulsifier is points out and development and application of polymerizable surfactants are introduced.

Abstract:A series of waterborne UV-curable polyurethane acrylates were synthesized.Their coatings properties were investigated.The influences of radiation time,film thickness,photoinitiator dosage,molecular structure and other factors on the coating properties were discussed.Therefore a series of UV curable polyurethane acrylate emulsions with excellent mechanical properties and decorative effect.The crosshatch adhensions of the coatings were between 0 and 1.Impact strengths are above 50 cm.The pencil hardness of the coatings film are over 3H.

Abstract:A series of stable alkoxysilane-modified acrylate latexes with various alkoxysilane fractions were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization. A small fraction of alkoxysilane side groups were incorporated into acrylic main chains via copolymerization. The hydroxyl oligomer alkoxysilane was grafted to the main chains via the condensation reaction of the hydroxyl groups with hydrolyzed alkxoysilane groups. It was found that: (1) γ-methacryl oxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPMS) was a better alkoxysilane comonomer than vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) in terms of colloid stability during polymerization and the hydrophobic property of the resulted polymer coating; (2) when MPMS was used, the colloid stability was very good either during polymerization or in storage; (3) the oligomer alkoxysilane was grafting onto with a grafted degree around 50%; (4) the oligomer alkoxysilane dramatically increased the hydrophobic property of the resulted coating. The water contact angle increased from 75° to 95° with 10% (mass) oligomer alkoxysilane and further up to 105° with 20% (mass) oiligomer alkoxysilane.

Abstract:Styrene/Acrylonitrile/N-Phenlymaleimide emulsion copolymerization was studied using sodium dodecyl sulfate as emulsifier and potas- sium persulphate as initiator.The effects of monomers ratio,emulsifier and initiator concentration on the polyresction and the product were investigat ed.It showed that the PMI content in the copolymer is important to the character of the copolymer,and for the copolymerization,the suitable reaction condition were:the emulsifier 13-15 mmol/L and the initiator 1.8～2.4 mmol/L.

Abstract:The effect of acrylate emulsion interface agent on tensile adhesive property between polymer cement mortar and extruded polystyrene board has been studied.The results show that adopt interface agent can obviously increase the tensile adhesive strength.After the interface agent is coated on the binding surface of extruded polystyrene board suitable open-time control of the interface agent and the proper prolongation of adhesive mortar curing time are favorable for increase the tensile adhesive strength.
Soap-Free Emulsion Polymerization of Styrene Using Macro-RAFT Agent to Make Cationic Latex

Abstract:A cationic amphiphilic macro-RAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer) agent, P4VPm-b-PSn-CPDTTC (m=10, 15, 20, 30, n ≈ 6), was synthesized as a surfactant in RAFT emulsion polymerization of styrene. The effects of neutralization degree and length of 4-vinylpyridine block of the agent on the soap-free emulsion polymerization were examined. The results show that a higher neutralization degree results in a longer inhibition period, and a longer 4-vinylpyridine block leads to a shorter inhibition period and a higher polymerization rate. The obtained latex particles have the average diameter of about 40 nm with a very wide range of particle size distribution. On the early stage of polymerization, the number-average molecular weight Mn of the obtained latex agreed well with what was predicted theoretically, but later on, it started to deviate; all of the polydispersity index (PDI) first rose, and then fell. At the end of polymerization, the PDIs were very high, and they increased with the increase of the neutralization degree.

Abstract:To overcome the main challenge of low colloidal stability of poly(styrene- co -butyl acrylate- co -acrylic acid- co -acrylamide) latexes in the presence of polymerizable surfactants, this study aimed to obtain latexes with superior properties and coagulum-free through semibatch emulsion polymerization using anionic and nonionic polymerizable surfactants (Maxemul TM 5010 and Maxemul TM 6106) mixed with a conventional anionic surfactant (Dowfax TM 2A1). The effect of the surfactant amount and type on the colloidal stability, particle size, electrolyte stability, water absorption of the polymer films, and wet scrub resistance of the paint films were investigated. The water absorption of polymer films containing a blend of polymerizable and conventional surfactants was compared to that of films containing conventional surfactants. The results showed that the molar mass has a significant impact on latex stability during the early stages of polymerization. By incorporating a chain transfer agent ( n- dodecyl mercaptan, DDM) within the range of 0.05-0.2 wt% loaded in the reactor charge based on the total formulation, coagulum-free latexes were obtained. When polymerizable surfactants were used together with a conventional surfactant and DDM, stable latexes with particle sizes ranging from 96.5 to 110.0 nm, enhanced film properties, and better scrub resistance of the paint films were obtained. The increase in polymerizable surfactant improves the electrolyte stability of the latexes but increases the water absorption of the polymer films. The use of polymerizable surfactant helps to reduce the total amount of surfactant used in the latex formulation. The results achieved in this study create a new approach for the synthesis of poly(St/BA/AA/AM) latexes using polymerizable surfactants for highly pigmented architectural paints.

Abstract:Acrylic resin containing N,N-dimethyl amino group and vinyl group applicable for UV-curable and cathodic electrophoretic paint was synthesized via radical polymerization of acrylic monomers followed by modification with methacrylic oxyethyl isocyanate (MOI). The effect of the content of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) on the properties of the electrophoretic paint was studied. It was found that the dispersibility of acrylic resin in water was improved greatly after introducing DMAEMA into acrylic resin, and with an increase of the DMAEMA content the particle diameter of the electrophoretic paint decreased significantly, and the stability also improved greatly. The depositing quantity, the coating thickness, and the water content of the coating before UV curing increased with increasing the DMAEMA content. Considering the properties of the electrophoretic paint, the suitable DMAEMA content in acrylic resin is w=0.144.

Abstract:Ab initio RAFT emulsion copolymerization of styrene (St) and acrylonitrile (AN) was investigated by using poly(acrylic acid)(20)-b-polystyrene(5) trithiocarbonate as surfactant and RAFT agent. The well-controlled polymerization in terms of linear growth of molecular weight, low PDI, and little coagulum could be achieved only when the mass ratio m(St)/m(AN) was greater than 1:1 and suitable polymerization temperature depending on the monomer ratios. A significant amount of coagulum was formed when more AN was used. The gel effect, which led to the diffusion-controlled RAFT addition reactions in the late stage of the polymerization, played a significant influence on the PDI, the degree of which was highly dependent on the targeted molecular weight and monomer compositions. For the copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile with the azeotropic composition (75 wt % styrene), the gel effect could be relieved by increasing the reaction temperature from 70 to 90 degrees C after the nucleation period, resulting in PDI as low as 1.20. However, in the cases of the higher AN composition, the gel effect was still pronounced. Unexpectedly, the particle number was insensitive to the RAFT agent concentrations.

Abstract:Silicone-acrylate copolymer latex was prepared through three different polymerization processes, i.e., the batch process, preemulsified monomer addition and the monomer addition process. The results revealed that the monomer addition process is a desirable approach to produce narrow particle size distribution latex with higher polymerization conversion and less amount of coagulum. The effect of silicone content on the glossiness and water absorption of latex film was investigated and the results showed that the glossiness of latex film is improved up to a silicone content of 10% of total monomers, but becomes impaired thereafter, whereas water absorption is reduced accordingly.

Abstract:With styrene (St), butyl acrylate (BA), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) as monomers, a core-shell structure was utilized to synthesize a polymerization emulsion. Then, self-crosslinked polyacrylic acid emulsions with different crosslinking degrees were synthesized by changing the amount of DAAM using deception acrylamide (DAAM) and adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH) as functional monomers. The basic performance tests demonstrated that the inclusion of DAAM resulted in an increase in the emulsion's stability and film's solvent resistance; The DSC test demonstrated that boosting the crosslinking degree was advantageous in improving the T g of the film; according to FT-IR and microscopic tests, the crosslinking reaction took place in the system. The self-crosslinking acrylic emulsion of this system has a certain application prospect as a binder.

Abstract:Abstract A series of cationic starch (CS-8)-based styrene (St) acrylate latex preparations was prepared by the core-shell emulsion polymerization method. The latex was used in the surface-treatment of decorative base papers, for good printability and absorbability. CS-8, which has a low relative viscosity, was used as the emulsifier and dispersant. The influencing factors (dosage of CS-8 as well as the kinds and dosages of functional monomers) were studied and the optimal conditions were achieved. Then, the products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), laser particle size analysis and particle charge detection. The results showed that the excellent performance and good surface-treatment effects of the St acrylate emulsion (SAE) were achieved when the reaction conditions were as follows: 10 wt% starch, 2 wt% methacryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) as the cationic monomer and 20 wt% ethyl acrylate (EA) as the acrylate monomer. Under the optimal conditions, the latex particle size was around 160 nm, the latex viscosity was 10 mPa·s and the latex charge density was 0.60 mmol·l -1 . The printability of the decorative base paper was significantly improved and the absorbability of the paper sheet was maintained. The surface-treatment effect of the cationic starch-based SAE was superior to that of commercial polyurethane (PU).

Abstract:The self-cross linking at ambient temperature hybrid silicone-acrylate emulsion was synthesized by adding functional monomer AAEMA into acrylate system which consisted of MMA,BA and MAA and then adding KH550 as crosslinking agent after polymerization.The silicone-acrylate emulsion obtained and its film were characterized by TEM,particle size analyzer,DSC,TGA,FT-IR.The effect of KH550/AAEMA molar ratio on the properties of latex film was investigated.The results show that the particle diameter of latex is about 100nm having relatively narrow distribution.The water resistance,ageing resistance,and mechanical properties of latex film are improved.

Abstract:This work summarizes strategies to enhance the colloidal stability of styrene-acrylic latexes under industrial-relevant operating conditions, using anionic alkenyl ether phosphate (MaxemulTM 6106) and nonionic alkenyl ethoxylated polymerizable surfactants (MaxemulTM 5010) for waterborne paints. The influence of polymerizable surfactants mixed with conventional anionic surfactant and semi-batch seeded emulsion polymerization on the colloidal stability, particle size, zeta potential, electrolyte stability, water absorption of the polymer films, wet scrub resistance, and water absorption of the paint films were investigated. The contribution of semi-batch seeded operating conditions on the colloidal stability of poly(St/BA/AA/AM) latexes and on the waterborne paints was studied. The results showed a significant improvement in the latex stability against coagulation and end-use properties when compared to unseeded latex. The use of semi-batch seeded emulsion polymerization enhanced the application properties of the latex and paints based on the polymerizable surfactant mixtures. When polymerizable surfactant was used together with conventional anionic surfactant in semi-batch seeded conditions, stable latexes, particle sizes ranging from 105 to 130 nm, and better scrub resistance of the paint films were obtained. The use of polymerizable surfactants helps to reduce the total amount of surfactant in the latex recipe. Furthermore, the use of semi-batch seeded conditions helps in the control of particle size, coagulum content, electrolyte stability of the latexes, and increased wet scrub resistance of the paint films. The use of a seed latex prepared in situ provides additional insights for the production of poly(St/BA/AA/AM) latexes characterized by an increase in both colloidal stability and wet scrub resistance of the paint films. Abstract:In this study, three different kinds of waterborne polyacrylate emulsions were synthesized with different hard, soft, and hydroxyl‐containing functional monomers by semi‐continuous seed emulsion polymerization. Moreover, the synthesized acrylic emulsions were used as binders for water‐based inks and the best recipe was selected out. Our work will provide an idea of acrylic emulsions for water‐based inks binders. The urge to protect the deteriorating ecosystem is compelling us to develop environmental‐friendly materials. In this paper, three different kinds of waterborne polyacrylate emulsions were synthesized with different hard, soft and hydroxyl‐containing functional monomers by semi‐continuous seed emulsion polymerization. Moreover, the influences of different monomers on the performances such as viscosity, adhesion, surface tension, particle size, stability, and contact angle were also investigated. Attractively, conclusions were deduced that with the growth of the monomer's alkyl chain length, the viscosity gradually increases and the surface tension gradually decreases. On the other hand, different functional monomers also have effect on the properties of the synthesized acrylic emulsions. Then the synthesized water‐based acrylic emulsions were used as binders for water‐based inks, the adhesion as well as initial dryness were tested and the recipe for water‐based ink with better performances was selected out. Our work maybe ignites a spark for the designation of acrylic emulsions for water‐based inks binders.

Abstract:In this work polystyrene/polyacrylate emulsions were obtained by a semi-continuous, seeded emulsion polymerization using methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA), butyl methacrylate (BMA), styrene (St) and 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl acetoacetate (AAEM) as monomers and polyether amine (D400) as crosslinker. The emulsion films were obtained by self-crosslinking of the emulsion at ambient temperature, and their mechanical and damping behaviors were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that crosslinking reactions between the acetoacetate groups of AAEM and amino groups of D400 had occurred and formed the C = C-N crosslinked structure. Moreover, tensile tests verified that the tensile strength of the film was significantly improved by the crosslinked structure, and its maximum reached 6.5 MPa, 211% higher than that of the uncrosslinked film. Besides, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) indicated that the crosslinking increased the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the corresponding activation energy ( Eα ) of the films. The results showed that the polystyrene/polyacrylate emulsion with 5 wt% AAEM and 3 wt% D400 possessed satisfying mechanical and damping properties. This work provides a reference for synthesizing self-crosslinking polystyrene/polyacrylate emulsions at ambient temperature.
