Abstract:In numerical welding simulation, to precisely predict residual stresses (RS) and deflections in steel components induced by fusion welding, the primary precondition is to accurately assess the welding temperature field. In thermal analysis, the applied thermal conductivity ( k ) of material plays an essential role in the calculation accuracy of welding temperature field. Nevertheless, it is still unclear how to economically and reliably determine k for a given steel in numerical simulation. In the present work, numerical sensitivity analysis was performed to investigate the impact of the variation in the temperature-dependent thermal conductivity ( k T ) on the computed welding temperature field. Furthermore, the thermal property tests and welding trials were executed for verification. The results indicate that the magnitude of temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of austenite ( k T·γ ) does not vary widely in steel. Meanwhile, the slight variation in k T·γ has nearly no influence on the predicted weld dimensions and cooling speed. Whereas, the amount of temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of α-Fe (ferrite/pearlite, bainite, and martensite) ( k T·α ) varies much for steel. Furthermore, the change in k T·α can significantly affect the calculated welding temperature field. It was found that it is dispensable to perform costly experiments to measure k for a given steel in numerical welding simulation. In the present work, instruction on how to efficiently and reliably determine k for a given steel in numerical welding simulation was presented and illustrated in detail.
