Abstract:Developing a facile route to access active and well-defined single atom sites catalysts has been a major area of focus for single atoms catalysts (SACs). Herein, we demonstrate a simple approach to generate atomically dispersed platinum via a thermal emitting method using bulk Pt metal as a precursor, significantly simplifying synthesis routes and minimizing synthesis costs. The ammonia produced by pyrolysis of Dicyandiamide can coordinate with platinum atoms by strong coordination effect. Then, the volatile Pt(NH3) x can be anchored onto the surface of defective graphene. The as-prepared Pt SAs/DG exhibits high activity for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction and selective oxidation of various organosilanes. This viable thermal emitting strategy can also be applied to other single metal atoms, for example, gold and palladium. Our findings provide an enabling and versatile platform for facile accessing SACs toward many industrial important reactions.

Abstract:Pt nanoclusters (Pt-C) on the surface of ceria-zirconia solid solutions exhibit superior low-temperature CO oxidation activity compared to Pt single atoms (Pt-1). However, the redispersion behavior of the Pt-C to Pt-1 lowers the efficiency of CO Oxidation. In this work, the stable surface hydroxyl groups were constructed by high-temperature hydrothermal aging treatment. Specifically, the Pt-1 catalyst (Pt/CZOe-SA) prepared by atom trapping was subjected to high-temperature hydrothermal treatment to obtain the stable Pt-C catalyst (Pt/CZOe-HT) with in-situ formed Pt-C. The experimental results showed that Pt-C with 2-3 nm size could achieve excellent low-temperature activity and thermal stability. In addition, the ab initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations revealed the specific evolution process of dynamic dispersion for Pt-C with or without hydroxyl groups from the femtosecond scale, suggesting that the hydroxyl groups limited the dispersion of Pt-C in the form of "energy fence". The hydrothermal treatment not only introduced high-temperature stable hydroxyl groups to improve the stability of the in-situ formed Pt-C, but also optimized the ratio of Pt-1 and Pt-C, and then enhanced the low-temperature activity by the synergistic effect between Pt-1 and Pt-C. The present work can provide theoretical guidance for developing high-performance and high-stability Pt-based catalysts.
Embedding Ultrafine and High-Content Pt Nanoparticles at Ceria Surface for Enhanced Thermal Stability.

Abstract:Ultrafine Pt nanoparticles loaded on ceria (CeO2) are promising nanostructured catalysts for many important reactions. However, such catalysts often suffer from thermal instability due to coarsening of Pt nanoparticles at elevated temperatures, especially for those with high Pt loading, which leads to severe deterioration of catalytic performances. Here, a facile strategy is developed to improve the thermal stability of ultrafine (1–2 nm)‐Pt/CeO2 catalysts with high Pt content (≈14 wt%) by partially embedding Pt nanoparticles at the surface of CeO2 through the redox reaction at the solid–solution interface. Ex situ heating studies demonstrate the significant increase in thermal stability of such embedded nanostructures compared to the conventional loaded catalysts. The microscopic pathways for interparticle coarsening of Pt embedded or loaded on CeO2 are further investigated by in situ electron microscopy at elevated temperatures. Their morphology and size evolution with heating temperature indicate that migration and coalescence of Pt nanoparticles are remarkably suppressed in the embedded structure up to about 450 °C, which may account for the improved thermal stability compared to the conventional loaded structure.
A Facile Route for Spraying Preparation of Pt/TiO2 Monolithic Catalysts Toward VOCs Combustion

Abstract:This study presents an efficient, economic, and simple preparation strategy for Pt/TiO2 monolith catalysts. Nano-Pt/TiO2 dispersion liquid with good activity and stability was synthesized by hydrolysis and chemical reduction method. Various Pt/TiO2 monolithic catalysts were prepared by spraying the dispersion liquid on different substrates. Results of transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, N-2 adsorption-desorption, H-2 temperature-programmed and CO oxidation showed that the Pt/TiO2 nanoparticles with good mesoporous structure and redox properties were highly dispersed on the substrate. The as-prepared 0.5 Pt/TiO2 cordierite monolithic catalyst with 0.1 wt%s Pt content exhibited excellent catalytic combustion activity (T-90 of toluene combustion was 212 degrees C), stability (no deactivation was observed during a 120 h test) and firmness (mass loss was 0.11% after 1 h ultrasonic vibration) under experimental conditions. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, this method is more suitable for large-scale production of waste-gas-treated monolith catalysts. And this method meets the concept of energy saving and emission reduction because of its simplicity, high efficiency, environmental friendliness, and high utilization of active components.

Abstract:Bimetallic Pt-based nanodendrites are of particular interest in various catalytic applications due to their high surface areas and low densities. Herein, we provide a facile method for one-pot synthesis of PtRu nanodendrites via the co-reduction of Pt and Ru precursors in oleylamine by H2. The as-fabricated PtRu nanodendrites exhibit superior catalytic activity and durability compared with PtRu nanocrystals (NCs), synthesized under the same reaction conditions, and the commercial Pt/C catalyst towards the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR).

Abstract:Colloidal metal nanocrystals with uniform sizes, shapes, compositions, and architectures are ideal building blocks for constructing heterogeneous catalysts with well-defined characteristics toward the investigation of accurate structure-property relationships and better understanding of catalytic mechanism. However, their applications in high-temperature heterogeneous catalysis are often restricted by the difficulty in maintaining the high metal dispersity and easy accessibility to active sites under harsh operating conditions. Here, a partial-oxide-coating strategy is proposed to stabilize metal nanocrystals against sintering and meanwhile enable an effective exposure of active sites. As a proof-of-concept, controlled partial silica coating of colloidally prepared Pd0.82 Ni0.18 nanocrystals with the size of 8 nm is demonstrated. This partially coated catalyst exhibits excellent activity, selectivity, and stability, outperforming its counterparts with fully coated and supported structures, in reverse water gas shift (RWGS) catalysis particularly at high operating temperatures. This study opens a new avenue for the exploration of colloidal metal nanocrystals in high-temperature heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Effective dechlorination, as well as high dispersion, is necessary in the Pt nanocatalyst preparation from cheap chlorine-containing precursors like H2PtCl6. We herein report a facile approach to direct preparation of Pt nanocatalysts from oxidative dechloridation of the TiO2 (P25) supported H2PtCl6 by O2 plasma. Oxygen plasma can completely dechlorinate, enhance the dispersion of Pt nanoparticles, and create large number of low-coordinated sites, thus leading to the highest activity in WGS reaction. At 200 oC, the O2 plasma treated Pt nanocatalyst achieves CO reaction rate of 1.07 mmol·mg−1·h−1 in WGS reaction, which is significantly higher than that of H2 and N2 plasmas treated samples. The oxidative dechloridation mechanism of O2 plasma and structure–activity relationship of the supported Pt nanocatalysts were demonstrated.

Abstract:As innovative nanostructured catalysts, palladium nanoparticles supported on carbon-coated zinc oxide nanowires (PdNPs/C&ZnO-NWs) are widely applied in industrial thermal catalysis, and therefore the real-time insights into their thermal stability and microstructural reconstruction at thermal reaction conditions will greatly extend our knowledge of their physicochemical properties and provide valuable guidance for the applications and designs of future nanocatalysts. The in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies revealed the high-temperature resistance to PdNPs aggregations with aids of carbon-coated low-dimensional nanostructures C&ZnO-NWs and elucidated ripening dynamics of PdNPs and the surface reconstruction of C&ZnO-NWs. The operando analysis of PdNPs/C&ZnO-NWs was executed in real-time under working-temperature situations. The aggregations of PdNPs were not observed until reaching a high working temperature of 300 °C and carbon-coated layers could functionally prevent PdNPs from sintering even when ZnO-NWs experienced melting at 500 °C. The time-lapsed TEM investigation proved that the ripening dynamics and time-dependent revolution of PdNPs size are in accordance with the Ostwald ripening process. The subsequent atomic-scale observation revealed the surface reconstruction of ZnO-NWs in the form of ZnO encapsulation over PdNPs and carbon-coated layers during the thermal process, which showed the microscopic evidence of potential deactivation of ZnO-NW-based nanocatalysts in thermal reactions.

Abstract:This study reveals atomic-scale observations of the high temperature stability of platinum nanoparticles deposited on pristine graphene oxide (PtNPs/GO) and platinum nanoparticles deposited on water-etched graphene oxide (PtNPs/GO-H2O) as two representative catalyst systems for dehydrogenation. With the aid of in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), these two kinds of catalysts can be examined at actual working temperatures up to 800 °C, and notably, PtNPs/GO-H2O exhibits the higher temperature stability even at 700 °C. The statistical data of in-situ time-lapsed TEM images demonstrate the size variations of the sintering Pt nanoparticles which are in accordance with the Ostwald ripening process. We further discover the tendency towards the preferential exposure of high-index Pt nanocrystal facets (higher surface energy sides) for the PtNPs/GO under thermal treatment from 25 °C to 400 °C, which leads to accelerate the nanoparticle aggregations, providing microscopic evidence of the catalyst instability at high temperatures.

Abstract:Propene combustion is crucial in emission-control applications. A set of Pt/γ-Al2O3 samples were synthesized through either the chemical reduction-deposition method (denoted as RD) or the incipient wetness impregnation method (denoted as IW) and employed for propene combustion. By adjusting the synthesis conditions, Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with diverse Pt nanoparticle size distributions were produced. Due to the reduction in particle size, the Pt-RD catalysts exhibit better catalytic activity than the Pt-IW catalyst. With an average Pt nanoparticle size of 2.93 nm, the 1% Pt-RD3 catalyst exhibited optimal catalytic performance, with a complete C3H6 conversion at 110 °C. A higher proportion of Pt0 was confirmed to be beneficial to propene combustion by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) investigations. Moreover, Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis demonstrated that Pt0 atoms at edge and corner surface sites participated in C3H6 oxidation as active sites. Extended experiments revealed that the 1% Pt-RD3 catalyst exhibited strong tolerance against water and high oxidation reactivities of other pollutants in vehicle emission. This work provides an effective attempt toward synthesis and applications of Pt-based catalysts for hydrocarbon combustion.

Continuous Fly-Through High-Temperature Synthesis of Nanocatalysts

Abstract:The conventional thermal treatment systems typically feature low ramping/cooling rates, which lead to steep thermal gradients that generate inefficient, nonuniform reaction conditions and result in nanoparticle aggregation. Herein, we demonstrate a continuous fly-through material synthesis approach using a novel high-temperature reactor design based on the emerging thermal-shock technology. By facing two sheets of carbon paper with a small distance apart (1–3 mm), uniform and ultrahigh temperatures can be reached up to 3200 K within 50 ms by simply applying a voltage of 15 V. The raw materials can be continuously fed through the device, allowing the final products to be rapidly collected. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we synthesized Pt nanocatalysts (∼4 nm) anchored on carbon black via this reactor at ∼1400 K. Furthermore, we find it features excellent electrocatalytic activities toward methanol oxidation reaction. Abstract:Interfacial local environment of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and support is crucial for the development and design of thermally and chemically stable noble metal heterogeneous catalysts. The unique chemical environment can strengthen the NPs interaction with the support surface, which can effectively avoid the agglomeration of NPs. The strategy is developed to modulate the interfacial chemical environment of supported Pt NPs with the help of the unsaturated Al3+ in Al2O3N (nanobelt) support, resulting in a sintering-resistant Pt/Al2O3N catalyst. Al solid-state MAS NMR characterization shows that Al2O3N support contains a large amount of unsaturated Alpenta3+ (about 22.6%). XAS confirms that Pt NPs deposited on the surface of Al2O3 with rich unsaturated pentahedral coordinated Al3+ sites have a unique coordination structure at the interface (more Pt-O coordination). When catalyzing the CO oxidation as a probe reaction, the catalytic activity and the particle sizes of Pt NPs do not change significantly even after the reaction at 400 °C for 15 days, and the complete CO conversion temperature increases only by 40 °C when the catalyst is screened at 600 °C for 5 days. This work demonstrates a new strategy to develop stable large-scale anti-sintering noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts for many important high-temperature industrial applications.

Spatial Segregation of Three-Dimensional Al2O3 Supported PtSn Catalyst for Improved Sintering-Resistant at High Temperature

Abstract:Many catalytic reactions operate within high-temperature environment, inevitably leading to the sintering of small nanoparticles. Consequently, the design of sintering-resistant metal nanocatalysts at elevated temperatures pose significant challenges. Herein, we introduce an approach, employing a 3D flower-shaped Al2O3 (F-Al2O3), to stabilize nanoparticles by establishing a spatial separation in propane dehydrogenation (PDH). The PDH reaction conducted is just a test system at non-relevant conditions. Both ex-situ and in-situ TEM analyses evidence that PtSn nanoparticles on the F-Al2O3 exhibit remarkable resistance to sintering under high-temperature oxidative and reductive conditions. The propane conversion of PtSn/F- Al2O3 fully rebounds to its initial state and the average particle diameter of PtSn/F- Al2O3 remains virtually unchanged after seven PDH cycles. In contrast, 2D Al2O3 nanosheets (C-Al2O3) experience severe PtSn nanoparticle sintering. Computational studies highlight the effectiveness of the 3D flower-shaped Al2O3 in obstructing particle migration and ripen through spatial segregation. This strategy involving the construction of three-dimensional space support presents a promising avenue for the design of sintering-resistant nanocatalysts.
Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Pt Nanoparticles via Liquid-Phase Polyol Reaction for Catalytic Volatile Organic Compound Elimination

Abstract:The microwave-assisted synthesis of functional metal nanoparticles (NPs) has gained considerable interest because of the shorter reaction period, significantly reduced energy consumption, and lower environmental impact compared to conventional heating. Herein, we elucidate the microwave-assisted synthesis of Pt NPs via liquid-phase polyol reaction based on a detailed investigation of the reaction dynamics during synthesis and its correlation with NP growth and crystallinity formation. The reduction behavior of Pt precursor under temperature scale is initially clarified, whose results suggest that precursor reduction plays an important role in deciding the crystallinity of Pt NPs core-state, that is polycrystalline Pt NPs with twinned crystal planes in microwave-assisted fast heating, and single crystalline Pt NPs in microwave-assisted slow heating. In addition, through a systematic comparison with oil-bath-induced conventional heating under identically controlled experimental conditions, the effect of microwave irradiation on the synthesis of the Pt NPs is also clarified. We also study the volatile oxidation products generated in polyol processes and derived a reaction mechanism distinct from the existing theory. By loading structurally controlled Pt NPs on hydroxyapatite, we successfully develop a high-performance catalyst for the elimination of VOC. Despite the 100-fold lower loading amount of Pt NPs herein compared with previous studies, the developed catalyst exhibits a superior CO2 selectivity of 100% in the oxidative decomposition of VOC under entire low-temperature regions (200–400 °C). The excellent catalytic activity of Pt NPs originating from the unique surface/interface structure tailored by microwave-assisted fast heating is elucidated. Abstract:Pt-based catalysts are the typical industrial catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH), which still suffer from insufficient long-term durability due to the structural instability and coke deposition. A commercial γ-Al2O3 supported thermally robust sub-nanometer Pt2In3 intermetallic catalyst with atomically ordered structure and rigorously separated Pt single atoms was fabricated, which showed outstanding robustness in 240 h long-term operation at 600 °C with the deactivation rate constant k d as low as 0.00078 h−1, ranking among the lowest reported values. Based on various in situ characterizations and theoretical calculations, it was proved that the catalyst stability not only resulted from the separated Pt single-atom sites but also significantly affected by the distance of adjacent Pt atoms. An increasing distance to 3.25 Å in the Pt2In3 could induce a weak π-adsorption configuration of propylene on Pt sites, which facilitated the desorption of propylene and restrained the side reactions like coking.

Abstract:A facile two-step method is developed for large-scale synthesis of chemically ordered Pt 3 Co nanoparticles (NPs) as a high-performance catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction. Due to the NaCl-matrix as dispersing media avoids the severe aggregation during the high-temperature annealing process, the resulting Pt 3 Co NPs are pure and well crystallized with narrow size distribution. Furthermore, the chemically ordered Pt 3 Co NPs exhibit excellent HER property in acidic solution. Our methodology can be also applied to synthesis of other Pt-based NPs.

Abstract:Downscaling of supported Pt structures to the nanoscale is motivated by the augmentation of the catalytic activity and selectivity, which depend on the particle size, shape and coverage. Harsh thermal and chemical conditions generally required for catalytic applications entail an undesirable particle coarsening, and consequently limit the catalyst lifetime. Herein we report an in situ synchrotron study on the stability of supported Pt nanoparticles and their stabilization using atomic layer deposition (ALD) as the stabilizing methodology against particle coarsening. Pt nanoparticles were thermally annealed up to 850 °C in an oxidizing environment while recording in situ synchrotron grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) 2D patterns, thereby obtaining continuous information about the particle radius evolution. Al2O3 overcoat as a protective capping layer against coarsening via ALD was investigated. In situ data proved that only 1 cycle of Al2O3 ALD caused an augmentation of the onset temperature for particle coarsening. Moreover, the results showed a dependence of the required overcoat thickness on the initial particle size and distribution, being more efficient (i.e. requiring lower thicknesses) when isolated particles are present on the sample surface. The Pt surface accessibility, which is decisive in catalytic applications, was analyzed using the low energy ion scattering (LEIS) technique, revealing a larger Pt surface accessibility for a sample with Al2O3 overcoat than for a sample without a protective layer after a long-term isothermal annealing.

Abstract:Supported bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts with small size have attracted wide research attention in catalysis but are difficult to synthesize because high-temperature annealing required for alloying inevitably accelerates metal sintering and leads to larger particles. Here, we report a simple and scalable "critical interparticle distance" method for the synthesis of a family of bimetallic nanocluster catalysts with an average particle size of only 1.5 nm by using large-surface-area carbon black supports at high temperatures, which consist of 12 diverse combinations of 3 noble metals (Pt, Ru, and Rh) and 4 other metals (Cr, Fe, Zr, and Sn). In this strategy, high-temperature treatments ensure the formation of alloyed bimetallic nanoparticles and enlargement of the interparticle distance on high-surface-area supports significantly suppresses metal sintering. Abstract:Single-atom metal catalysts offer a promising way to utilize precious noble metal elements more effectively, provided that they are catalytically active and sufficiently stable. Herein, we report a synthetic strategy for Pt single-atom catalysts with outstanding stability in several reactions under demanding conditions. The Pt atoms are firmly anchored in the internal surface of mesoporous Al2O3, likely stabilized by coordinatively unsaturated pentahedral Al3+ centres. The catalyst keeps its structural integrity and excellent performance for the selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene after exposure to a reductive atmosphere at 200 °C for 24 h. Compared to commercial Pt nanoparticle catalyst on Al2O3 and control samples, this system exhibits significantly enhanced stability and performance for n-hexane hydro-reforming at 550 °C for 48 h, although agglomeration of Pt single-atoms into clusters is observed after reaction. In CO oxidation, the Pt single-atom identity was fully maintained after 60 cycles between 100 and 400 °C over a one-month period.

Abstract:An in situ 3D reconstruction methodology based on scanning transmission electron microscopy is presented to characterize the morphology and composition of bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts, requiring no tilting and using a low electron dose. PtNi nanoparticles are found to lose their Pt‐rich surface regions on heating and become increasingly homogenous, which is correlated with a decrease in the oxygen reduction activity. Tailoring nanoparticles' composition and morphology is of particular interest for improving their performance for catalysis. A challenge of this approach is that the nanoparticles' optimized initial structure often changes during use. Visualizing the three dimensional (3D) structural transformation in situ is therefore critical, but often prohibitively difficult experimentally. Although electron tomography provides opportunities for 3D imaging, restrictions in the tilt range of in situ holders together with electron dose considerations limit the possibilities for in situ electron tomography studies. Here, an in situ 3D imaging methodology is presented using single particle reconstruction (SPR) that allows 3D reconstruction of nanoparticles with controlled electron dose and without tilting the microscope stage. This in situ SPR methodology is employed to investigate the restructuring and elemental redistribution within a population of PtNi nanoparticles at elevated temperatures. The atomic structure of PtNi is further examined and a heat‐induced transition is found from a disordered to an ordered phase. Changes in structure and elemental distribution are linked to a loss of catalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction. The in situ SPR methodology employed here can be extended to a wide range of in situ studies employing not only heating, but gaseous, aqueous, or electrochemical environments to reveal in‐operando nanoparticle evolution in 3D.
