Abstract:Conformal field theory (CFT) has become an active area of research beyond its origins in statistical physics and attracted much attention due to its intrinsic mathematical interest, which reveals deep connections with other diverse branches of mathematics. We study a specific subclass of CFTs that involve either uncoupled or coupled free fermions. Coupled free fermion CFTs arise from parafermion CFTs and lattice constructions. We analyse their representation spaces and reveal the exclusion statistics of coupled free fermions with universal chiral partition functions under specific bases. We explicitly decompose their modules into Virasoro modules of minimal models. We reveal an unexpected connection that integrates the coset construction, lattice construction, and orbifold construction, which is supported by proving a range of character identities within the context of coupled free fermions. Simultaneously, we obtain explicit expressions of certain string functions in terms of Dedekind eta functions.

Abstract:The fundamental structure of the 4-dimensional spacetime is assumed to be the lorentzian CR-structure (LCR-structure), which contains two correlated 3-dimensional CR-structures. It is defined by explicit Frobenius integrable relations characterized by "left" and "right" CP(3) points. This LCR-structure is invariant under a very restrictive tetrad-Weyl symmetry, which permits a unique special second order partial differential equation applied to a Yang-Mills field, identified with the gluon field. A class of metrics with the corresponding self-dual forms are defined. After partially fixing the tetrad-Weyl symmetry, the electroweak connection is also defined, which is directly related with the class of LCR-tetrads of the structure. The "free electron" LCR-structure is identified, which has gravitational and electroweak potentials (dressings) with fermionic gyromagnetic ratio g=2. The corresponding massless "neutrino" LCR-structure is also found. These two solitonic configurations constitute the first leptonic generation identified with the Petrov type D LCR-structure. The muon and tau leptonic generations are identified with the Petrov type II and I respectively. Using the electron LCR-structure, I compute the corresponding quark having an additional gluonic potential and providing the explication of the lepton-quark correspondence. The standard model is implied via the causal Bogoliubov, Epstein-Glaser and Scharf procedure viewed as a targeted harmonic analysis in the rigged Hilbert-Fock space of precise Poincare representations of the computed geometric structures.

Fermions in Boundary Conformal Field Theory : Crossing Symmetry and $ε$-Expansion

Abstract:We use the equations of motion in combination with crossing symmetry to constrain the properties of interacting fermionic boundary conformal field theories. This combination is an efficient way of determining operator product expansion coefficients and anomalous dimensions at the first few orders of the $\epsilon$ expansion. Two necessary ingredients for this procedure are knowledge of the boundary and bulk spinor conformal blocks. The bulk spinor conformal blocks are derived here for the first time. We then consider a number of examples. For $\phi$ a scalar field and $\psi$ a fermionic field, we study the effects of a $\phi \bar \psi \psi$ coupling in $4- \epsilon$ dimensions, a $\phi^2 \bar \psi \psi$ coupling in $3 -\epsilon$ dimensions, and a $(\bar \psi \psi)^2$ coupling in $2+\epsilon$ dimensions. We are able to compute some new anomalous dimensions for operators in these theories. Finally, we relate the anomalous dimension of a surface operator to the behavior of the charge density near the surface.

Abstract:With a view towards higher-spin applications, we study the partition function of a free complex fermion in 2d CFT, restricted to the neutral (zero fermion number) sector. This restriction leads to a partial theta function with a combinatoric interpretation in terms of Dyson's crank of a partition. More crucially, this partition function can be expressed in terms of a q-hypergeometric function with quantum modular properties. This allows us to find its high-temperature asymptotics, including subleading terms which agree with, but also go beyond, what one obtains by imposing neutrality thermodynamically through a chemical potential. We evaluate the asymptotic density of states for this neutral partition function, including the first few subleading terms. Our results should be extendable to more fermions, as well as to higher-spin chemical potentials, which would be of relevance to the higher-spin/minimal model correspondence.

Abstract:We used the Cartan formalism to construct fermionic models that are compatible with Galilean or Carrollian symmetry and rigid scaling symmetry. The free Carrollian fermion model exhibits conformal Carrollian symmetry which is isomorphic to the asymptotic symmetries for flat spacetime in three dimensions, namely the BMS3 symmetry. We performed canonical quantization to this free Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) fermion model, discussed both the highest weight vacuum and the induced vacuum, calculated the correlation functions and the torus partition function. Finally, we constructed N=2 supersymmetric theories by combining the free fermion model and the free scalar model [ Phys. Rev. Modularity in $d > 2$ free conformal field theory

Abstract:We derive new closed form expressions for the partition functions of free conformally-coupled scalars on $S^{2D-1}\times S^1$ which resum the exact high-temperature expansion. The derivation relies on an identification of the partition functions, analytically continued in chemical potentials and temperature, with multiple elliptic Gamma functions. These functions satisfy interesting modular properties, which we use to arrive at our expressions. We describe a geometric interpretation of the modular properties of multiple elliptic Gamma functions in the context of superconformal field theory. Based on this, we suggest a geometric interpretation of the modular property in the context of the free scalar CFT in even dimensions and comment on extensions to odd dimensions and free fermions.

Abstract:Entanglement or modular Hamiltonians play a crucial role in the investigation of correlations in quantum field theories. In particular, in 1+1 space-time dimensions, the spectra of entanglement Hamiltonians of conformal field theories (CFTs) for certain geometries are related to the spectra of the physical Hamiltonians of corresponding boundary CFTs. As a result, conformal invariance allows exact computation of the spectra of the entanglement Hamiltonians for these models. In this work, we perform this computation of the spectrum of the entanglement Hamiltonian for the free compactified boson CFT over a finite spatial interval. We compare the analytical results obtained for the continuum theory with numerical simulations of a lattice-regularized model for the CFT using density matrix renormalization group technique. To that end, we use a lattice regularization provided by superconducting quantum electronic circuits, built out of Josephson junctions and capacitors. Up to non-universal effects arising due to the lattice regularization, the numerical results are compatible with the predictions of the exact computations.

Abstract:Two-dimensional full conformal field theories have been studied in various mathematical frameworks, from algebraic, operator-algebraic to categorical. In this work, we focus our attention on theories with chiral components having pointed braided tensor representation subcategories, namely having automorphisms whose equivalence classes necessarily form an abelian group. For such theories, we exhibit the explicit Hilbert space structure and construct primary fields as Wightman fields for the two-dimensional full theory. Given a finite collection of chiral components with automorphism categories with trivial total braiding, we also construct a local extension of their tensor product as a chiral component. We clarify the relations with the Longo-Rehren construction, and illustrate these results with concrete examples including the U(1)-current.

Abstract:A free held representation for the left-right asymmetric conformal Toda theory based on simply-laced even-rank Lie algebras is given. It is shown that the classical chiral exchange algebra for such theories can be reconstructed from free chiral bosoms via Drinfeld-Sokolov Linear systems, and is a bit more complicated than that of the standard Toda due to some additional delta-function terms and extra degrees of freedom.

Abstract:This chapter is an introduction to the Free Fermionic Formulation of String Theory, with emphasis on heterotic model building. After a brief review of bosonization in two dimensional conformal field theories, we discuss how internal bosonic string coordinates can be consistently replaced by free fermionic degrees of freedom. In this framework, worldsheet supersymmetry may be realized entirely among free fermions. Embedding this construction into string theory leads to a number of constraints arising from modular invariance at one and higher genera. The solution of these constraints takes the form of a small number of model building rules from which the string spectrum and interactions may be analyzed. We review some of the most well-studied models in the literature and their classification, with emphasis on the symmetric basis. The explicit map of free fermionic models to the orbifold construction is presented in some detail.

Abstract:Two dimensional conformal feld theories have been extensively studied in the past. When considered on the torus, they are strongly constrained by modular invariance. However, introducing relevant deformations or chemical potentials pushes these theories away from criticality, where many of their aspects are still poorly understood. In this note we make a step towards filling this gap, by analyzing the theory of a Dirac fermion on the torus, deformed by a mass term and a chemical potential for the particle number symmetry. The theory breaks conformal and Lorentz invariance, and we study its spectrum and partition function. We also focus on two limits that are interesting on their own right: a massless relativistic fermion with nonzero chemical potential (a simple model for CFTs at finite density), and nonrelativistic Schrodinger fermions (of relevance in condensed matter systems). Taking inspiration from recent developments in massive modular forms, we obtain a representation of the torus free energy based on Fourier-transforming over a twisted boundary condition. This dual representation fullfills many properties analogous to modular invariance in CFTs. In particular, we use this result to derive Cardy-like formulas for the high energy density of states of these theories.

Abstract:The 2+1d continuum Lifshitz theory of a free compact scalar field plays a prominent role in a variety of quantum systems in condensed matter physics and high energy physics. It is known that in compact space, it has an infinite ground state degeneracy. In order to understand this theory better, we consider two candidate lattice regularizations of it using the modified Villain formalism. We show that these two lattice theories have significantly different global symmetries (including a dipole global symmetry), anomalies, ground state degeneracies, and dualities. In particular, one of them is self-dual. Given these theories and their global symmetries, we can couple them to corresponding gauge theories. These are two different $U(1)$ tensor gauge theories. The resulting models have excitations with restricted mobility, i.e., fractons. Finally, we give an exact lattice realization of the fracton/lineon-elasticity dualities for the Lifshitz theory, scalar and vector charge gauge theories.

Finite temperature fermionic charge and current densities in conical space with a circular edge

Abstract:We study the finite temperature and edge induced effects on the charge and current densities for a massive spinor field localized on a 2D conical space threaded by a magnetic flux. The field operator is constrained on a circular boundary, concentric with the cone apex, by the bag boundary condition and by the condition with the opposite sign in front of the term containing the normal to the edge. In two-dimensional spaces there exist two inequivalent representations of the Clifford algebra and the analysis is presented for both the fields realizing those representations. The circular boundary divides the conical space into two parts, referred as interior (I-) and exterior (E-) regions. The radial current density vanishes. The edge induced contributions in the expectation values of the charge and azimuthal current densities are explicitly separated in the both regions for the general case of the chemical potential. They are periodic functions of the magnetic flux and odd functions under the simultaneous change of the signs of magnetic flux and chemical potential. In the E-region all the spinorial modes are regular and the total charge and current densities are continuous functions of the magnetic flux. In the I-region the corresponding expectation values are discontinuous at half-integer values of the ratio of the magnetic flux to the flux quantum. 2D fermionic models, symmetric under the parity and time-reversal transformations (in the absence of magnetic fields) combine two spinor fields realizing the inequivalent representations of the Clifford algebra. The total charge and current densities in those models are discussed for different combinations of the boundary conditions for separate fields. Applications are discussed for electronic subsystem in graphitic cones described by the 2D Dirac model.
