Abstract:A collective field formalism for nonrelativistic fermions in (1+1) dimensions is presented. Applications to the D=1 hermitian matrix model and the system of one-dimensional fermions in the presence of a weak electromagnetic field are discussed.

Abstract:We study a two-matrix toy model with a BFSS-like interaction term using the collective field formalism. The main technical simplification is obtained by gauge-fixing first, and integrating out the off-diagonal elements, before changing to the collective field variable. We show that the resulting (2+1)-dimensional collective field action has novel features with respect to non-locality, and that we need to add a mass term to get a time-local potential. As is expected, one recovers the single matrix quantum mechanical collective field Hamiltonian in the proper limit.

Abstract:A new formulation of four-dimensional quantum field theories, such as scalar-field theory, is proposed as a large n limit of a special n×n matrix model. Our reduction scheme works beyond planar approximation and applies for QFT with finite number of fields. It uses quenched coordinates instead of quenched momenta of the old Eguchi–Kawai reduction known to yield correctly only the planar sector of quantum field theory. Fermions can be also included.

Fermion-fermion duality in 3+1 dimensions

Abstract:Dualities play a central role in both quantum field theories and condensed matter systems. Recently, a web of dualities has been discovered in 2+1 dimensions. Here, we propose in particular a generalization of the Son's fermion-fermion duality to 3+1 dimensions. We show that the action of charged Dirac fermions coupled to an external electromagnetic field is dual to an action of neutral fermions minimally coupled to an emergent vector gauge field. This dual action contains also a further tensor (Kalb-Ramond) gauge field coupled to the emergent and electromagnetic vector potentials. We firstly demonstrate the duality in the massive case. We then show the duality in the case of massless fermions starting from a lattice model and employing the slave-rotor approach already used in the 2+1-dimensional duality [Burkov, Phys. Rev. B 99, 035124 (2019)]. We finally apply this result to 3D Dirac semimetals in the low-energy regime. Besides the implications in topological phases of matter, our results shed light on the possible existence of a novel web of dualities in 3+1-dimensional (non-supersymmetric) quantum field theories.

D=0 Matrix Model as Conjugate Field Theory

Abstract:The D=0 matrix model is reformulated as a 2d nonlocal quantum field theory. The interactions occur on the one-dimensional line of hermitian matrix eigenvalues. The field is conjugate to the density of matrix eigenvalues which appears in the Jevicki-Sakita collective field theory. The classical solution of the field equation is either unique or labeled by a discrete index. Such a solution corresponds to the Dyson sea modified by an entropy term. The modification smoothes the sea edges, and interpolates between different eigenvalue bands for multiple-well potentials. Our classical eigenvalue density contains nonplanar effects, and satisfies a local nonlinear Schrödinger equation with similarities to the Marinari-Parisi $D=1$ reformulation. The quantum fluctuations about a classical solution are computable, and the IR and UV divergences are manifestly removed to all orders. The quantum corrections greatly simplify in the double scaling limit, and include both string-perturbative and nonperturbative effects.

Abstract:The framework of relativistic energy density functionals is extended to include correlations related to the restoration of broken symmetries and fluctuations of collective variables. A new implementation is developed for the solution of the eigenvalue problem of a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian for quadrupole vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom, with parameters determined by constrained self-consistent relativistic mean-field calculations for triaxial shapes. The model is tested in a series of illustrative calculations of potential energy surfaces and the resulting collective excitation spectra and transition probabilities of the chain of even-even gadolinium isotopes.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the collective field theory description of a single free massless scalar matrix theory in 2+1 dimensions. The collective fields are given by k -local operators obtained by tracing a product of k -matrices. For k = 2 and k = 3 we argue that the collective field packages the fields associated to a single and two Regge trajectories respectively. We also determine the coordinate transformation between the coordinates of the collective field theory and the bulk AdS space time. This is used to verify that the bulk equations of motion holds in the collective field theory description.

Abstract:The quantum inverse scattering method is used to solve model of the principal chiral field in 1 + 1 dimension. A different approach based on fermionization was proposed before by A. M. Polyakov and P. B. Wiegmann (Phys. Lett. B131 (1981), 121). The main idea of our work is to get the relativistic model from the lattice magnetic model in the scaling limit with spin S going to infinity. Our method became realistic after the new Hamiltonian interpretation of the Pohlmeyer-Zakharov-Mikhailov L-M pair, (K. Pohlmeyer, Comm. Math. Phys.46 (1976), 207; V. E. Zakharov and A. V. Mikhailov, Sov. Phys. JETP (Engl. Transl.)47 (1978), 1017) was devised.

Abstract:In this work, we study the relativistic quantum kinetic equations in 2 + 1 dimensions from Wigner function formalism by carrying out a systematic semiclassical expansion up to h order. The derived equations allow us to explore interesting transport phenomena in 2 + 1 dimensions. Within this framework, the parity-odd transport current induced by the external electromagnetic field is self-consistently derived. We also examine the dynamical mass generation by implementing four-fermion interaction with mean-field approximation. In this case, a new kind of transport current is found to be induced by the gradient of the mean-field condensate. Finally, we also utilize this framework to study the dynamical mass generation in an external magnetic field for the (2 + 1)-dimensional system under equilibrium.

Abstract:The purpose is to study systems of interacting particles in the Generl Relativity context, by the principle of least action using purely classical concepts. The particles are described by a state tensor using a Clifford algebra for the kinematic part. The force fields, including gravitation, are described by connections on principle bundles. A solution has been found to account for individual particles. A more specific model based on scalar products, Dirac operator and chirality is studied in more details. Problems related to symmetries, including the Higgs mechanism, are intoduced. With a comprehensive coverage of topics it can be a useful pedagogical study.

Abstract:The exploration of scalar field theories that exhibit Carroll and Galilei symmetries has attracted a lot of attention. In this paper, we generalize these studies to fermionic field theories and construct consistent electric and magnetic descriptions of Carrollian and Galilean spin $\tfrac{1}{2}$ fermions. We showcase various methods that offer complementary perspectives into the limiting process of the underlying relativistic theories. Moreover, we extend our study to $\mathcal{N}=1$ off-shell supersymmetric field theories in four dimensions. By introducing suitable Grassmann-analyticity conditions, we formulate the corresponding super-Carrollian and super-Galilean theories. These theories combine the established Carroll/Galilei scalars with the Carroll/Galilei fermions and a range of auxiliary fields into supermultiplets.

Abstract:The paper introduces the isotopic Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. This representation was used to derive equations for massive interacting fermion fields. When the interaction Hamiltonian commutes with the matrix, these equations possess chiral invariance irrespective of whether fermions have mass or are massless. The isotopic Foldy-Wouthuysen representation preserves the vector and axial currents irrespective of the fermion mass value. In the Dirac representation, the axial current is preserved only for massless fermions. In the isotopic Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, the ground state of fermions (vacuum) turns out to be degenerate, and therefore there is the possibility of spontaneously breaking parity (P - symmetry). This study considers the example of constructing a chirally symmetric quantum electrodynamics framework in the isotopic Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. A number of physical processes are calculated in the lowest orders of the perturbation theory. Final results of the calculations agree with the results of the standard quantum electrodynamics.

Non-relativistic limit for Higher Spin Fields and Planar Schroedinger Equation in 3D

Abstract:Higher spin (HS) fields naturally occur in string theory, they are considered as a candidate for dark matter and may also appear as a collective excitation in condensed matter systems. In some cases one may study the HS fields in the non-relativistic settings. Thus, it is of interest to know the non-relativistic limit of HS fields and how to find the Schroedinger equation as the dynamical equation in this limit. In this paper, we consider the non-relativistic limit of HS fields in Minkowskian spacetime in 3D. We work both at the level of equation of motion and action/Lagrangian density. We find the systematic procedures in both settings and show that they can be generalized to arbitrary HS fields.

Abstract:We consider 1+1 field generalization of the elliptic Calogero-Moser model. It is shown that the Lax connection satisfies the classical non-ultralocal $r$-matrix structure of Maillet type. Next, we consider 1+1 field analogue of the spin Calogero-Moser model and its multipole (or multispin) extension. Finally, we discuss the field analogue of the classical IRF-Vertex correspondence, which relates utralocal and non-ultralocal $r$-matrix structures.

A Fully Solvable Model of Fermionic Interaction in $3+1d$

Abstract:Recently, Romatschke found that the poles in $O(N)$ scalar theories do not affect observables such as temperature and pressure. Romatschke went on to show this result holds for marginal, relevant, and irrelevant operators in $3+1d$ $(O(N)$ scalar theories. We continue in this direction by studying large-$N$ fermi-interactions in $3+1d$. To do so, we produce a model of marginally coupled fermi-interactions which is fully renormalizable at large-$N$. This theory contains poles in the running coupling, however we argue these poles do not affect any physical observables. Further, our theory contains first order phase transition which separates a stable, meta-stable, and unstable phase.

Abstract:In a previous paper, we found an extension of the N-dimensional Lorentz generators that partially restores the closed operator algebra in the presence of a Maxwell field, and is conserved under system evolution. Generalizing the construction found by Berard, Grandati, Lages and Mohrbach for the angular momentum operators in the O(3)-invariant nonrelativistic case, we showed that the construction can be maximally satisfied in a three dimensional subspace of the full Minkowski space; this subspace can be chosen to describe either the O(3)-invariant space sector, or an O(2,1)-invariant restriction of spacetime. When the O(3)-invariant subspace is selected, the field solution reduces to the Dirac monopole field found in the nonrelativistic case. For the O(2,1)-invariant subspace, the Maxwell field can be associated with a Coulomb-like potential on spacetime, similar to that used by Horwitz and Arshansky to obtain a covariant generalization of the hydrogen-like bound state. In this paper we elaborate on the generalization of the Dirac monopole to N-dimensions.

Abstract:Mean field approach, although a generally reliable tool that captures major short-range correlations, often fails in symmetric low dimensional strongly correlated electronic systems like those described by the Hubbard model. In these situations a symmetry is almost broken. The problem is linked to the restoration of the symmetry due to strong fluctuations (both quantum and thermal) on all scales. The restoration of symmetry in statistical models of scalar order parameter fields was treated recently successfully on the Gaussian approximation level by symmetrization of the correlators. Here the idea is extended to fermionic systems in which the order parameter is composite. Furthermore, the precision of the correlators can be improved perturbatively. Such a scheme (based on covariant Gaussian approximation) is demonstrated on the one dimensional (1D) and 2D one band Hubbard models by comparison of the correlator with exact diagonalization and MC simulations, respectively.

Abstract:It is generally believed that the 1+1D model for a single chiral fermion does not exist by itself alone on lattice. The obstruction to such a lattice realization is the failure to reproduce the quantum anomalies of a chiral fermion in continuum. The conventional way to escape is to associate the anomalous 1d system with a 2d bulk, which is in a topologically non-trivial state, as the boundary of the latter. In this paper, we propose a 1+1D chiral fermion model on 1d spatial lattice, standing alone — without being associated with a 2d bulk — with a simple non-Hermitian hopping Hamiltonian. We demonstrate, using various methods, that the model possesses the same chiral anomaly and gravitational anomaly as in continuum theory. Furthermore, with appropriate parameters, the low energy effective theory of the model remains a field theory for unitary chiral fermions. The essential reason for the success is that the usual "doubled" fermion mode with opposite chirality is rapidly damped out because of non-Hermicity of the Hamiltonian.
