Abstract:In boundary conformal field theories, global symmetries can be broken by boundary conditions, generating a homogeneous conformal manifold. We investigate these geometries, showing they have a coset structure, and give fully worked out examples in the case of free fields of spin zero and one-half. These results give a simple illustration of the salient features of conformal manifolds while generalizing to interacting and more intricate setups. Our work was inspired by Drukker et al. [ Phys. Abstract:The anomalous rescaling for antisymmetric tensor fields, including gauge bosons, and Dirac fermions on Einstein spaces with boundary has been prone to errors and these are corrected here. The explicit calculations lead to some interesting identities that indicate a deeper underlying structure.

Abstract:Toda Conformal Field Theories (CFTs hereafter) are generalizations of Liouville CFT where the underlying field is no longer scalar but takes values in a finite-dimensional vector space. The algebra of symmetry of such models is given by $W$-algebras, which contain the Virasoro algebra as a subalgebra. In contrast with Liouville CFT, and in the presence of a boundary, there may exist non-trivial automorphisms of the associated $W$-algebra, corresponding to different boundary conditions for the field of the theory.

Fermions in Boundary Conformal Field Theory : Crossing Symmetry and $ε$-Expansion

Abstract:We use the equations of motion in combination with crossing symmetry to constrain the properties of interacting fermionic boundary conformal field theories. This combination is an efficient way of determining operator product expansion coefficients and anomalous dimensions at the first few orders of the $\epsilon$ expansion. Two necessary ingredients for this procedure are knowledge of the boundary and bulk spinor conformal blocks. The bulk spinor conformal blocks are derived here for the first time. We then consider a number of examples. For $\phi$ a scalar field and $\psi$ a fermionic field, we study the effects of a $\phi \bar \psi \psi$ coupling in $4- \epsilon$ dimensions, a $\phi^2 \bar \psi \psi$ coupling in $3 -\epsilon$ dimensions, and a $(\bar \psi \psi)^2$ coupling in $2+\epsilon$ dimensions. We are able to compute some new anomalous dimensions for operators in these theories. Finally, we relate the anomalous dimension of a surface operator to the behavior of the charge density near the surface.

Abstract:We study a relationship between conformally invariant boundary conditions and anomalies of conformal field theories (CFTs) in 1+1 dimensions. For a given CFT with a global symmetry, we consider symmetric gapping potentials which are relevant perturbations to the CFT. If a gapping potential is introduced only in a subregion of the system, it provides a certain boundary condition to the CFT. From this equivalence, if there exists a Cardy boundary state which is invariant under a symmetry, then the CFT can be gapped with a unique ground state by adding the corresponding gapping potential. This means that the symmetry of the CFT is anomaly free. Using this approach, we systematically deduce the anomaly-free conditions for various types of CFTs with several different symmetries. They include the free compact boson theory, Wess-Zumino-Witten models, and unitary minimal models. When the symmetry of the CFT is anomalous, it implies a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type ingappability of the system. Our results are consistent with, where available, known results in the literature. Moreover, we extend the discussion to other symmetries including spin groups and generalized time-reversal symmetries.

Abstract:For a conformal theory it is natural to seek the conformal moduli space, M_c to which it belongs, generated by the exactly marginal deformations. By now we should have the tools to determine M_c in the presence of enough supersymmetry. Here it is shown that its dimension is determined in terms of a certain index. Moreover, the D-term of the global group is an obstruction for deformation, in presence of a certain amount of preserved supersymmetry. As an example we find that the deformations of the membrane (3d) field theory, under certain conditions, are in 35/SL(4,C). Other properties including the local geometry of M_c are discussed.

Abstract:This is an introduction to the microscopic techniques of non-rational bulk and boundary conformal field theory which are needed to describe strings moving in non-compact curved backgrounds. The latter arise, e.g. in the context of AdS/CFT-like dualities and for studies of time-dependent processes. After a general outline of the central concepts, we focus on two specific but rather prototypical models: Liouville field theory and the 2D cigar. Rather than following the historical path, the presentation attempts to be systematic and self-contained.

Abstract:We analyze deformations of two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) from the perspective of classical bosonic closed string field theory (SFT). The latter can be viewed as a version of Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) improved conformal perturbation theory, where the renormalization scheme is defined through the choice of string vertices in the construction of SFT. Furthermore, the CFT data at the RG fixed point can be recovered from the spectrum and amplitudes of string field fluctuations. As applications, we construct the Horowitz-Polchinski "string star" solution in SFT, and a solution of tachyon-dilaton condensation that deforms the noncompact boson to minimal models by creating a pair of "Runkel-Watts walls".

Abstract:We consider a higher derivative scalar field theory in the presence of a boundary and a classically marginal interaction. We first investigate the free limit where the scalar obeys the square of the Klein-Gordon equation. In precisely $d=6$ dimensions, modules generated by $d-2$ and $d-4$ dimensional primaries merge to form a staggered module. We compute the conformal block associated with this module and show that it is a generalized eigenvector of the Casimir operator. Next we include the effect of a classically marginal interaction that involves four scalar fields and two derivatives. The theory has an infrared fixed point in $d=6-{\epsilon}$ dimensions. We compute boundary operator anomalous dimensions and boundary OPE coefficients at leading order in the ${\epsilon}$ expansion for the allowed conformal boundary conditions.

Line defects in conformal field theory: from weak to strong coupling

Abstract:Conformal field theory finds applications across diverse fields, from statistical systems at criticality to quantum gravity through the AdS/CFT correspondence. These theories are subject to strong constraints, enabling a systematic non-perturbative analysis. Conformal defects provide a controlled means of breaking the symmetry, introducing new physical phenomena while preserving crucial benefits of the underlying conformal symmetry. This thesis investigates conformal line defects in both the weak- and strong-coupling regimes. Two distinct classes of models are studied. First, we focus on the supersymmetric Wilson line in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang--Mills, which serves as an ideal testing ground for the development of innovative techniques such as the analytic conformal bootstrap. The second class consists of magnetic lines in Yukawa models, which have fascinating applications in $3d$ condensed-matter systems. These systems have the potential to emulate phenomena observed in the Standard Model in a low-energy setting.

Abstract:We propose a method to challenge the calculation of genus- g , bulk n -point, b -boundary, c -crosscap correlation functions with x boundary operators in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFT 2 ). We show that are infinite linear combinations of genus- g , bulk ( n + b + c )-point functions F g , ( n + b + c ) , and try to obtain the linear coefficients in this work. We show the existence of a single pole structure in the linear coefficients at degenerate limits. A practical method to obtain the infinite linear coefficients is the free field realizations of Ishibashi states. We review the results in Virasoro minimal models ( p, p ′) and extend it to the N = 1 minimal models ( p, p ′).

Nonrelativistic Dirac fermions on the torus

Abstract:Two dimensional conformal feld theories have been extensively studied in the past. When considered on the torus, they are strongly constrained by modular invariance. However, introducing relevant deformations or chemical potentials pushes these theories away from criticality, where many of their aspects are still poorly understood. In this note we make a step towards filling this gap, by analyzing the theory of a Dirac fermion on the torus, deformed by a mass term and a chemical potential for the particle number symmetry. The theory breaks conformal and Lorentz invariance, and we study its spectrum and partition function. We also focus on two limits that are interesting on their own right: a massless relativistic fermion with nonzero chemical potential (a simple model for CFTs at finite density), and nonrelativistic Schrodinger fermions (of relevance in condensed matter systems). Taking inspiration from recent developments in massive modular forms, we obtain a representation of the torus free energy based on Fourier-transforming over a twisted boundary condition. This dual representation fullfills many properties analogous to modular invariance in CFTs. In particular, we use this result to derive Cardy-like formulas for the high energy density of states of these theories.

In it, pig picture ideas are prioritized over technical details, which can be found in many of the other excellent reviews that already exist. It is written primarily with upper division undergraduate Physics majors, master's students, and PhD students in mind. However, it should additionally be useful to anyone who is interested in learning the basics of CFT and has some foundation in undergraduate Physics coursework.

Non-perturbative Studies of Non-conformal Field Theories

Abstract:Many of the exciting features of the Standard Model of the elementary particles are inherently non-perturbative. A theoretical understanding of many physics aspects beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles also requires a non-perturbative framework. One such framework involves discretizing quantum field theories on a spacetime lattice. We can use this lattice regularization method to study supersymmetric versions of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this thesis, we discuss the spacetime lattice setup, and with the examples of different models, we will see the numerical capability of this tool in exploring field theory regimes that are not accessible through perturbation theory. We use an efficient version of the Monte Carlo algorithm to update the field configurations in the path integral and eventually reach the equilibrium configurations. A version of the gauge/gravity conjecture connects weakly coupled gravitational theories to strongly coupled field theories. We will mainly focus on the non-conformal analogs of the conjecture in lower dimensions. This thesis mainly discusses the numerical simulation results of two lower-dimensional models. One is the bosonic version of the BMN matrix quantum mechanics and the other is a two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory containing four supersymmetries. Our numerical results suggest that the phase diagram of bosonic BMN model smoothly interpolates between the bosonic BFSS and the gauged Gaussian model, with first-order deconfinement phase transition at all couplings. Our simulation results for two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory that contains four supersymmetries show that this model admits a deconfinement phase transition in the limit of a large number of colors. We also show that the nature of the transition looks similar to its maximally supersymmetric cousin in the weak coupling regime.

Abstract:Systems as diverse as binary mixtures and inclusions in biological membranes, and many more, can be described effectively by interacting spins. When the critical fluctuations in these systems are constrained by boundary conditions, critical Casimir forces (CCF) emerge. Here we analyze CCF between boundaries with alternating boundary conditions in two dimensions, employing conformal field theory (CFT). After presenting the concept of boundary changing operators, we specifically consider two different boundary configurations for a strip of critical Ising spins: (I) alternating equi-sized domains of up and down spins on both sides of the strip, with a possible lateral shift, and (II) alternating domains of up and down spins of different size on one side and homogeneously fixed spins on the other side of the strip. Asymptotic results for the CCF at small and large distances are derived. We introduce a novel modified Szegö formula for determinants of real antisymmetric block Toeplitz matrices to obtain the exact CCF and the corresponding scaling functions at all distances. We demonstrate the existence of a surface renormalization group flow between universal force amplitudes of different magnitude and sign. The Casimir force can vanish at a stable equilibrium position that can be controlled by parameters of the boundary conditions. Lateral Casimir forces assume a universal simple cosine form at large separations.
Studying the 3d Ising surface CFTs on the fuzzy sphere

Abstract:Boundaries not only are fundamental elements in nearly all realistic physical systems, but also greatly enrich the structure of quantum field theories. In this paper, we demonstrate that conformal field theory (CFT) with a boundary, known as surface CFT in three dimensions, can be studied with the setup of fuzzy sphere. We consider the example of surface criticality of the 3D Ising CFT. We propose two schemes by cutting a boundary in the orbital space or the real space to realise the ordinary and the normal surface CFTs on the fuzzy sphere. We obtain the operator spectra through state-operator correspondence. We observe integer spacing of the conformal multiplets, and thus provide direct evidence of conformal symmetry. We identify the ordinary surface primary $o$, the displacement operator $\mathrm{D}$ and their conformal descendants and extract their scaling dimensions. We also study the one-point and two-point correlation functions and extract the bulk-to-surface OPE coefficients, some of which are reported for the first time. In addition, using the overlap of the bulk CFT state and the polarised state, we calculate the boundary central charges of the 3D Ising surface CFTs non-perturbatively. Other conformal data obtained in this way also agrees with prior methods.

Abstract:Higher dimensional Euclidean Liouville conformal field theories (LCFTs) consist of a log-correlated real scalar field with a background charge and an exponential potential. We analyse the LCFT on a four-dimensional manifold with a boundary. We extend to the boundary, the conformally covariant GJMS operator and the ${\cal Q}$-curvature term in the LCFT action and classify the conformal boundary conditions. Working on a flat space with plate boundary, we calculate the dimensions of the boundary conformal primary operators, the two- and three-point functions of the displacement operator and the boundary conformal anomaly coefficients.
