Broken Symmetry in Neoclassical Transport Theory

Abstract:A formulation of Neoclassical transport theory is given that is consistent with the traditional formulation and yet has broken “Onsager” symmetry1 for conjugate terms involving the electron heat flux and bootstrap currents. This is demonstrated for the electron Lorentz transport model for the purely collisional theory. Such a symmetry breaking has been previously suggested2 but the argument invoked turbulence effects. The terms involved in the present theory are not the ones discussed in the previous work. We show that the symmetry can be mathematically restored by adding certain reactive flow terms to both the Ohmic heating and the electron heat flux, but such an artifice does not represent a clear picture of physical reality (it requires adding non-dissipative terms from the collisionless bootstrap current to the Ohmic heating). We claim that the non-symmetric formulation gives the clearest picture of physical reality, i.e. Neoclassical transport should not be considered an Onsager symmetric theory. The main contribution of the formulation presented is to clarify physically the microscopic processes involved and to distinguish collisionless orbit effects (like the Ware pinch and certain banana-diamagnetic bootstrap current terms), which do not have Onsager symmetry from collisional processes that do. Such understandings are important, we claim, as theory is applied in more complex geometries and extended to include turbulence and collisions in combination. 1L. Onsager, Phys. Abstract:The radiative transport equation in a three-dimensional infinite medium is considered. The coefficients of the radiative transport equation are assumed to be constant. For a pencil beam, we extend the analytical discrete-ordinates method to three dimensions by rotating reference frames. Obtained results are compared to Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:A microscopic formalism to calculate thermal transport coefficients is presented based on a thermal vector potential, whose time-derivative is related to a thermal force. The formalism is free from unphysical divergences reported to arise when Luttinger's formalism is applied naively, because the equilibrium (\textquoteleft diamagnetic\textquoteright) currents are treated consistently. The mathematical structure for thermal transport coefficients are shown to be identical with the electric ones if the electric charge is replaced by energy. The results indicates that the thermal vector potential couples to energy current via the minimal coupling.

Abstract:The linear transport theory is developed to describe the time dependence of the number density of tracer particles in porous media. The advection is taken into account. The transport equation is numerically solved by the analytical discrete ordinates method. For the inverse Laplace transform, the double-exponential formula is employed.

Nonlinear closure relations theory for transport processes in nonequilibrium systems

Abstract:A decade ago, a macroscopic theory for closure relations has been proposed for systems out of Onsager's region. This theory is referred to as the thermodynamic field theory (TFT). The aim of this work was to determine the nonlinear flux-force relations that respect the thermodynamic theorems for systems far from equilibrium. We propose a formulation of the TFT where one of the basic restrictions, namely, the closed-form solution for the skew-symmetric piece of the transport coefficients, has been removed. In addition, the general covariance principle is replaced by the De Donder-Prigogine thermodynamic covariance principle (TCP). The introduction of TCP requires the application of an appropriate mathematical formalism, which is referred to as the entropy-covariant formalism. By geometrical arguments, we prove the validity of the Glansdorff-Prigogine universal criterion of evolution. A new set of closure equations determining the nonlinear corrections to the linear ("Onsager") transport coefficients is also derived. The geometry of the thermodynamic space is non-Riemannian. However, it tends to be Riemannian for high values of the entropy production. In this limit, we recover the transport equations found by the old theory. Applications of our approach to transport in magnetically confined plasmas, materials submitted to temperature, and electric potential gradients or to unimolecular triangular chemical reactions can be found at references cited herein. Transport processes in tokamak plasmas are of particular interest. In this case, even in the absence of turbulence, the state of the plasma remains close to (but, it is not in) a state of local equilibrium. This prevents the transport relations from being linear.
Theory of relativistic Brownian motion: the (1+3) -dimensional case

Abstract:A theory for (1+3) -dimensional relativistic Brownian motion under the influence of external force fields is put forward. Starting out from a set of relativistically covariant, but multiplicative Langevin equations we describe the relativistic stochastic dynamics of a forced Brownian particle. The corresponding Fokker-Planck equations are studied in the laboratory frame coordinates. In particular, the stochastic integration prescription--i.e., the discretization rule dilemma--is elucidated (prepoint discretization rule versus midpoint discretization rule versus postpoint discretization rule). Remarkably, within our relativistic scheme we find that the postpoint rule (or the transport form) yields the only Fokker-Planck dynamics from which the relativistic Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics is recovered as the stationary solution. The relativistic velocity effects become distinctly more pronounced by going from one to three spatial dimensions. Moreover, we present numerical results for the asymptotic mean-square displacement of a free relativistic Brownian particle moving in 1+3 dimensions.

Abstract:We investigate an exactly solvable model for directional transport in 1D. The structured system, which has strong elastic interactions in its parts, explicitly demonstrates the role of volume exclusion in producing directional transport. We capture the complementary role of the elasticity and volume exclusion as the basic ingredient for showing up of broken microscopic symmetry at the scale of macroscopic motions. We compare the analytic results with the numerical simulation.

Abstract:We developed analytical and numerical methods to study a transport of non-interacting particles in large networks consisting of M d-dimensional containers C_1,...,C_M with radii R_i linked together by tubes of length l_{ij} and radii a_{ij} where i,j=1,2,...,M. Tubes may join directly with each other forming junctions. It is possible that some links are absent. Instead of solving the diffusion equation for the full problem we formulated an approach that is computationally more efficient. We derived a set of rate equations that govern the time dependence of the number of particles in each container N_1(t),N_2(t),...,N_M(t). In such a way the complicated transport problem is reduced to a set of M first order integro-differential equations in time, which can be solved efficiently by the algorithm presented here. The workings of the method have been demonstrated on a couple of examples: networks involving three, four and seven containers, and one network with a three-point junction. Already simple networks with relatively few containers exhibit interesting transport behavior. For example, we showed that it is possible to adjust the geometry of the networks so that the particle concentration varies in time in a wave-like manner. Such behavior deviates from simple exponential growth and decay occurring in the two container system.

Abstract:In this paper we show how the non-relativistic transport equations for a simple fluid can be obtained using a 3+1 representation. A pseudo-galilean transformation is introduced in order to obtain the Euler conservation laws. The interpretation of such transformation as well as the implications and potential extensions of the formalism are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Over the last decade impressive progress has been made in the theoretical understanding of transport properties of clean, one-dimensional quantum lattice systems. Many physically relevant models in one dimension are Bethe-ansatz integrable, including the anisotropic spin- 1/2 Heisenberg (also called the spin- 1/2 XXZ chain) and the Fermi-Hubbard model. Nevertheless, practical computations of correlation functions and transport coefficients pose hard problems from both the conceptual and technical points of view. Only because of recent progress in the theory of integrable systems, on the one hand, and the development of numerical methods, on the other hand, has it become possible to compute their finite-temperature and nonequilibrium transport properties quantitatively. Owing to the discovery of a novel class of quasilocal conserved quantities, there is now a qualitative understanding of the origin of ballistic finite-temperature transport, and even diffusive or superdiffusive subleading corrections, in integrable lattice models. The current understanding of transport in one-dimensional lattice models, in particular, in the paradigmatic example of the spin- 1/2 XXZ and Fermi-Hubbard models, is reviewed, as well as state-of-the-art theoretical methods, including both analytical and computational approaches. Among other novel techniques, matrix-product-state-based simulation methods, dynamical typicality, and, in particular, generalized hydrodynamics are covered. Numerical Optimal Transport from 1D to 2D using a Non-local Monge-Ampère Equation

Abstract:We consider the numerical solution of the optimal transport problem between densities that are supported on sets of unequal dimension. Recent work by McCann and Pass reformulates this problem into a non-local Monge-Ampère type equation. We provide a new level set framework for interpreting this non-linear PDE. We also propose a novel discretisation that combines carefully constructed monotone finite difference schemes with a variable-support discrete version of the Dirac delta function. The resulting method is consistent and monotone. These new techniques are described and implemented in the setting of 1D to 2D transport, but can easily be generalised to higher dimensions. Several challenging computational tests validate the new numerical method.

Non-relativistic transport from frame-indifferent kinetic theory

Abstract:This paper explores the application of Newton-Cartan geometry to the kinetic theory of gases that includes non-relativistic gravitational effects and the principle of general covariance. Starting with an introduction to the basics of Newton-Cartan geometry, we examine the motion of point particles within this framework, leading to a detailed analysis of kinetic theory and the derivation of conservation equations. The equilibrium distribution function is explored, and the example of a rotating gas in a gravitational field is discussed. Further, we develop covariant hydrodynamic equations and extend our analysis through a gradient expansion approach to assess first-order constitutive relations for rotating gases. Finally, we address the frame-dependence paradox, presenting a novel resolution that addresses apparent discrepancies. Our construction resolves a fifty-year-old debate about the frame-indifferent formulation of kinetic theory. The resolution is presented in a modern, symmetry-based approach.

Abstract:From the Vlasov equation, a phase-space transport equation is derived by using the Lie-transform approach, and its connection with the quasilinear transport, nonlinear stochastic transport, and fractional transport equations are discussed. The phase-space transport equation indicates a particle redistribution in the real space induced by the inhomogeneity in the energy space distribution and by the correlation between the change of position and the change of energy.

Abstract:We investigate nonequilibrium steady states in a class of one-dimensional diffusive systems that can attain negative absolute temperatures. The cases of a paramagnetic spin system, a Hamiltonian rotator chain and a one-dimensional discrete linear Schrödinger equation are considered. Suitable models of reservoirs are implemented to impose given, possibly negative, temperatures at the chain ends. We show that a phenomenological description in terms of a Fourier law can consistently describe unusual transport regimes where the temperature profiles are entirely or partially in the negative-temperature region. Negative-temperature Fourier transport is observed both for deterministic and stochastic dynamics and it can be generalized to coupled transport when two or more thermodynamic currents flow through the system.

We consider a Brownian particle under various circumstances and driven by thermal (equilibrium) and non-thermal (active) fluctuations.
