Abstract:The radiative transport equation in a three-dimensional infinite medium is considered. The coefficients of the radiative transport equation are assumed to be constant. For a pencil beam, we extend the analytical discrete-ordinates method to three dimensions by rotating reference frames. Obtained results are compared to Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:The radiative transfer equation (RTE) has been established as a fundamental tool for the description of energy transport, absorption and scattering in many relevant societal applications, and requires numerical approximations. However, classical numerical algorithms scale unfavorably with respect to the dimensionality of such radiative transfer problems, where solutions depend on physical as well as angular variables. In this paper we address this dimensionality issue by developing a low-rank tensor product framework for the RTE in plane-parallel geometry. We exploit the tensor product nature of the phase space to recover an operator equation where the operator is given by a short sum of Kronecker products. This equation is solved by a preconditioned and rank-controlled Richardson iteration in Hilbert spaces. Using exponential sums approximations we construct a preconditioner that is compatible with the low-rank tensor product framework. The use of suitable preconditioning techniques yields a transformation of the operator equation in Hilbert space into a sequence space with Euclidean inner product, enabling rigorous error and rank control in the Euclidean metric.

Abstract:The radiative transfer equation (RTE) is an integro-differential equation that describes the radiation energy absorbing, emitting, and scattering in both space and angle, which can be up to five-dimensional problems. It is difficult for a RTE solver to satisfy both accuracy and efficiency (less computational resources) for such high dimensional problems. In this paper, an iterative solver for one-dimensional cylindrical radiative transfer problems using the space-angle discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is developed to achieve both accuracy and efficiency. The iterative solver is based on the angular decomposition (AD) scheme, which slices the spatial-angular domain into slabs and decouples the angular integration between slabs. Both Jacobi and successive over-relaxation (SOR) iterative schemes are investigated by numerical analysis and examples. The comparison of the two iterative schemes suggests that an appropriate relaxation factor for the SOR method may accelerate the convergence. Finally, the iterative scheme is more efficient than the direct solution of the system both in terms of memory usage and computational time, especially for finer meshes.

An Adaptive Angular Aomain Compression Scheme For Solving Multiscale Radiative Transfer Equation

Abstract:When dealing with the steady-state multiscale radiative transfer equation (RTE) with heterogeneous coefficients, spatially localized low-rank structures are present in the angular space. This paper introduces an adaptive tailored finite point scheme (TFPS) for RTEs in heterogeneous media, which can adaptively compress the angular space. It does so by selecting reduced TFPS basis functions based on the local optical properties of the background media. These reduced basis functions capture the important local modes in the velocity domain. A detailed a posteriori error analysis is performed to quantify the discrepancy between the reduced and full TFPS solutions. Additionally, numerical experiments demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the adaptive TFPS in solving multiscale RTEs, especially in scenarios involving boundary and interface layers.

Abstract:Case's method obtains solutions to the radiative transport equation as superpositions of elementary solutions when the specific intensity depends on one spatial variable. In this paper, we find elementary solutions when the specific intensity depends on three spatial variables in three-dimensional space. By using the reference frame whose z-axis lies in the direction of the wave vector, the angular part of each elementary solution becomes the singular eigenfunction for the one-dimensional radiative transport equation. Thus Case's method is generalized.

An Effective Approach to Solve Radiative Transfer Equations in Strongly Forward Scattering Environments and Its Applications in Vegetation Scattering

Abstract:The radiative transfer equation (RTE) has been primarily adopted over the years for wave propagation in random media, but in a strongly forward scattering environments, existing approaches to solve the RTE encounter difficulties due to the singularity in the scattering phase matrix. In this paper, we propose an effective method to solve RTE with strongly forward scattering phase matrices. For the case of vegetated land surfaces with electrically large cylindrical structures, we study the applicability of the singularity extracted RTE. The comparison of transmission coefficients between the singularity extracted RTE and full wave simulations shows that our approach is effective and efficient. Besides, this formulation also provides the physical origin for the parameterization of the widely applied W-T models.
Infinite Series Solution of the Time-Dependent Radiative Transfer Equation in Anisotropically Scattering Media

Abstract:We solve the radiative transfer equation (RTE) in anisotropically scattering media as an infinite series. Each series term represents a distinct number of scattering events, with analytical solutions derived for zero and single scattering. Higher-order corrections are addressed through numerical calculations or approximations. The RTE solution corresponds to Monte Carlo sampling of photon trajectories with fixed start and end points. Validated against traditional Monte Carlo simulations, featuring random end points, our solution demonstrates enhanced efficiency for both anisotropic and isotropic scattering functions, significantly reducing computational time and resources. The advantage of our method over Monte Carlo simulations varies with the position of interest and the asymmetry of light scattering, but it is typically orders of magnitude faster while achieving the same level of accuracy. The exploitation of hidden symmetries further accelerates our numerical calculations, enhancing the method's overall efficiency. In addition, we extend our analysis to the first and second moments of the photon's flux, elucidating the transition between transport and diffusive regimes.

Abstract:It is of great interest to solve the inverse problem of stationary radiative transport equation (RTE) in optical tomography. The standard way is to formulate the inverse problem into an optimization problem, but the bottleneck is that one has to solve the forward problem repeatedly, which is time-consuming. Due to the optical property of biological tissue, in real applications, optical thin and thick regions coexist and are adjacent to each other, and the geometry can be complex. To use coarse meshes and save the computational cost, the forward solver has to be asymptotic preserving across the interface (APAL).

Abstract:In this work, we prove rigorous error estimates for a hybrid method introduced in [15] for solving the time-dependent radiation transport equation (RTE). The method relies on a splitting of the kinetic distribution function for the radiation into uncollided and collided components. A high-resolution method (in angle) is used to approximate the uncollided components and a low-resolution method is used to approximate the the collided component. After each time step, the kinetic distribution is reinitialized to be entirely uncollided. For this analysis, we consider a mono-energetic problem on a periodic domains, with constant material cross-sections of arbitrary size. To focus the analysis, we assume the uncollided equation is solved exactly and the collided part is approximated in angle via a spherical harmonic expansion ($\text{P}_N$ method). Using a non-standard set of semi-norms, we obtain estimates of the form $C(\varepsilon,\sigma,\Delta t)N^{-s}$ where $s\geq 1$ denotes the regularity of the solution in angle, $\varepsilon$ and $\sigma$ are scattering parameters, $\Delta t$ is the time-step before reinitialization, and $C$ is a complicated function of $\varepsilon$, $\sigma$, and $\Delta t$. These estimates involve analysis of the multiscale RTE that includes, but necessarily goes beyond, usual spectral analysis. We also compute error estimates for the monolithic $\text{P}_N$ method with the same resolution as the collided part in the hybrid. Our results highlight the benefits of the hybrid approach over the monolithic discretization in both highly scattering and streaming regimes.

An Implicit Finite Volume Scheme to Solve the Time Dependent Radiation Transport Equation Based on Discrete Ordinates

Abstract:We describe a new algorithm to solve the time dependent, frequency integrated radiation transport (RT) equation implicitly, which is coupled to an explicit solver for equations of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) using {\sf Athena++}. The radiation filed is represented by specific intensities along discrete rays, which are evolved using a conservative finite volume approach for both cartesian and curvilinear coordinate systems. All the terms for spatial transport of photons and interactions between gas and radiation are calculated implicitly together. An efficient Jacobi-like iteration scheme is used to solve the implicit equations. This removes any time step constrain due to the speed of light in RT. We evolve the specific intensities in the lab frame to simplify the transport step. The lab-frame specific intensities are transformed to the co-moving frame via Lorentz transformation when the source term is calculated. Therefore, the scheme does not need any expansion in terms of $v/c$. The radiation energy and momentum source terms for the gas are calculated via direct quadrature in the angular space. The time step for the whole scheme is determined by the normal Courant -- Friedrichs -- Lewy condition in the MHD module. We provide a variety of test problems for this algorithm including both optically thick and thin regimes, and for both gas and radiation pressure dominated flows to demonstrate its accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:We present a new method for the numerical solution of the radiative-transfer equation (RTE) in multidimensional scenarios commonly encountered in computational astrophysics. The method is based on the direct solution of the Boltzmann equation via an extension of the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) equation and allows to model the evolution of the radiation field as it interacts with a background fluid, via absorption, emission, and scattering. As a first application of this method, we restrict our attention to a frequency independent ("grey") formulation within a special-relativistic framework, which can be employed also for classical computational astrophysics. For a number of standard tests that consider the performance of the method in optically thin, optically thick and intermediate regimes with a static fluid, we show the ability of the LB method to produce accurate and convergent results matching the analytic solutions. We also contrast the LB method with commonly employed moment-based schemes for the solution of the RTE, such as the M1 scheme. In this way, we are able to highlight that the LB method provides the correct solution for both non-trivial free-streaming scenarios and the intermediate optical-depth regime, for which the M1 method either fails or provides inaccurate solutions. When coupling to a dynamical fluid, on the other hand, we present the first self-consistent solution of the RTE with LB methods within a relativistic-hydrodynamic scenario. Finally, we show that besides providing more accurate results in all regimes, the LB method features smaller or comparable computational costs compared to the M1 scheme.

Three-dimensional Radiative Transfer with Multilevel Atoms

Abstract:The efficient numerical solution of Non-LTE multilevel transfer problems requires the combination of highly convergent iterative schemes with fast and accurate formal solution methods of the radiative transfer (RT) equation. This contribution begins presenting a method for the formal solution of the RT equation in three-dimensional (3D) media with horizontal periodic boundary conditions. This formal solver is suitable for both, unpolarized and polarized 3D radiative transfer and it can be easily combined with the iterative schemes for solving non-LTE multilevel transfer problems that we have developed over the last few years. We demonstrate this by showing some schematic 3D multilevel calculations that illustrate the physical effects of horizontal radiative transfer. These Non-LTE calculations have been carried out with our code MUGA 3D, a 3D multilevel Non-LTE code based on the Gauss-Seidel iterative scheme that Trujillo Bueno and Fabiani Bendicho (1995) developed for RT applications.

Abstract:The multi-frequency radiation transport equation (RTE) system models the photon transport and the energy exchange process between the background material and different frequency photons. In this paper, the unified gas-kinetic wave-particle (UGKWP) method for multi-frequency RTE is developed to capture the multiscale non-equilibrium transport in different optical regimes. In the UGKWP, a multiscale evolution process is properly designed to obtain both non-equilibrium transport in the optically thin regime and thermal diffusion process in the optically thick regime automatically. At the same time, the coupled macroscopic energy equations for the photon and material are solved implicitly by the matrix-free source iteration method. With the wave-particle decomposition strategy, the UGKWP method has a dynamic adaptivity for different regime physics. In the optically thick regime, no particles will be sampled in the computational domain and the thermal diffusion solution for the photon transport will be recovered. While in the optically thin regime, stochastic particles will play a dominant role in the evolution and the non-equilibrium free transport of photon is automatically followed. In the frequency-dependent transport, the frequency carried by the simulating particle will be determined by a linear-frequency sampling strategy. In addition, to better resolve the sharp of opacity in the photon transport across a cell interface, the free streaming time of simulating particle in the UGKWP method will be reset when it passes through the interface. Moreover, the numerical relaxation time is properly defined to increase the particle proportion in the sharp opacity transition region in order to avoid numerical oscillation. Several typical test cases for the RTE system have been calculated to demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the current frequency-dependent UGKWP method.

Abstract:Linear kinetic transport equations play a critical role in optical tomography, radiative transfer and neutron transport. The fundamental difficulty hampering their efficient and accurate numerical resolution lies in the high dimensionality of the physical and velocity/angular variables and the fact that the problem is multiscale in nature. Leveraging the existence of a hidden low-rank structure hinted by the diffusive limit, in this work, we design and test the angular-space reduced order model for the linear radiative transfer equation, the first such effort based on the celebrated reduced basis method (RBM). Our method is built upon a high-fidelity solver employing the discrete ordinates method in the angular space, an asymptotic preserving upwind discontinuous Galerkin method for the physical space, and an efficient synthetic accelerated source iteration for the resulting linear system. Addressing the challenge of the parameter values (or angular directions) being coupled through an integration operator, the first novel ingredient of our method is an iterative procedure where the macroscopic density is constructed from the RBM snapshots, treated explicitly and allowing a transport sweep, and then updated afterwards. A greedy algorithm can then proceed to adaptively select the representative samples in the angular space and form a surrogate solution space. The second novelty is a least squares density reconstruction strategy, at each of the relevant physical locations, enabling the robust and accurate integration over an arbitrarily unstructured set of angular samples toward the macroscopic density. Numerical experiments indicate that our method is effective for computational cost reduction in a variety of regimes.

Abstract:This paper extends the theoretical framework of universal forward and backward Monte Carlo radiative transfer modeling for passive and active polarization observation simulations. The framework is built upon newly derived forward and backward vector scattering order-dependent integral radiative transfer equations (IRTEs). The unified mathematical formalism not only establishes the design of object-oriented software architecture, but also speeds up software development via the reuse of developed scalar code. The polarization simulations are implemented with the addition of the Stokes vector and the Mueller matrix weight tracing schemes. To improve numerical performance order by order, the extension implementation of hybrid scattering order-dependent variance reduction techniques are given detailedly, with a focus on the formulation of scattering phase matrix truncation on the basis of remodeling vector IRTEs. To enrich polarization simulation features, not only scattering operators but also source vector function and detector response matrix function are formulated in unified mathematical forms for the hierarchies organization of various atmosphere, surface, source and detector classes. The framework was fully implemented in Multiple-Scaling-based Cloudy Atmospheric Radiative Transfer (MSCART) model. For passive simulation, it not only can handle all one-and three-dimensional (1D and 3D) test cases in the Phase A and B of the International Polarized Radiative Transfer (IPRT) intercomparison project by simulating area-averaged polarized radiance using forward and backward algorithm, but also can simulate polarized radiance in a specified direction at a specified position using backward algorithm; For active simulation, lidar backscatter range-resolved signals can be simulated using forward algorithm. A fast algorithm for radiative transport in isotropic media

Abstract:We propose in this work a fast numerical algorithm for solving the equation of radiative transfer (ERT) in isotropic media. The algorithm has two steps. In the first step, we derive an integral equation for the angularly averaged ERT solution by taking advantage of the isotropy of the scattering kernel, and solve the integral equation with a fast multipole method (FMM). In the second step, we solve a scattering-free transport equation to recover the original ERT solution. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous media.

Reflective Conditions for Radiative Transfer in Integral Form with H-Matrices

Abstract:In a recent article the authors showed that the radiative Transfer equations with multiple frequencies and scattering can be formulated as a nonlinear integral system. In the present article, the formulation is extended to handle reflective boundary conditions. The fixed point method to solve the system is shown to be monotone. The discretization is done with a $P^1$ Finite Element Method. The convolution integrals are precomputed at every vertices of the mesh and stored in compressed hierarchical matrices, using Partially Pivoted Adaptive Cross-Approximation. Then the fixed point iterations involve only matrix vector products. The method is $O(N\sqrt[3]{N}\ln N)$, with respect to the number of vertices, when everything is smooth. A numerical implementation is proposed and tested on two examples. As there are some analogies with ray tracing the programming is complex.

Abstract:The integro-differential formulation of the RTE and its solution by iterations on the source has been extended here to handle anisotropic scattering. The iterative part of the method is O(N ln N ), thanks to an efficient use of H-matrices. The precision is good enough to evaluate the effect of sensitive parameters for the study of contrails. Most of the time the stratified 1D approximation should suffice, but in complex cases with high relief the 3D formulation is needed.

Abstract:The development of fast numerical methods for multilevel radiative transfer (RT) applications often leads to important breakthroughs in astrophysics, because they allow the investigation of problems that could not be properly tackled using the methods previously available. Probably, the most familiar example is the so-called Multilevel Accelerated Λ-Iteration (MALI) technique of Rybicki & Hummer for the case of a local approximate operator, which is based on Jacobi iteration. However, there are superior operator-splitting methods, based on Gauss-Seidel (GS) and Successive Overrelaxation (SOR) iteration, which provide a dramatic increase in the speed with which non-LTE multilevel transfer problems can be solved in one, two and three-dimensional geometries. Such RT methods, which were introduced by Trujillo Bueno & Fabiani Bendicho ten years ago, are the main subject of the first part of this paper. We show in some detail how they can be applied for solving multilevel RT problems in spherical geometry, for both atomic and molecular line transitions. The second part of the article addresses the issue of the calculation of the molecular number densities when the approximation of instantaneous chemical equilibrium turns out to be inadequate, which happens to be the case whenever the dynamical time scales of the astrophysical plasma under consideration are much shorter than the time needed by the molecules to form.
