Broken Symmetry in Neoclassical Transport Theory

Abstract:A formulation of Neoclassical transport theory is given that is consistent with the traditional formulation and yet has broken “Onsager” symmetry1 for conjugate terms involving the electron heat flux and bootstrap currents. This is demonstrated for the electron Lorentz transport model for the purely collisional theory. Such a symmetry breaking has been previously suggested2 but the argument invoked turbulence effects. The terms involved in the present theory are not the ones discussed in the previous work. We show that the symmetry can be mathematically restored by adding certain reactive flow terms to both the Ohmic heating and the electron heat flux, but such an artifice does not represent a clear picture of physical reality (it requires adding non-dissipative terms from the collisionless bootstrap current to the Ohmic heating). We claim that the non-symmetric formulation gives the clearest picture of physical reality, i.e. Neoclassical transport should not be considered an Onsager symmetric theory. The main contribution of the formulation presented is to clarify physically the microscopic processes involved and to distinguish collisionless orbit effects (like the Ware pinch and certain banana-diamagnetic bootstrap current terms), which do not have Onsager symmetry from collisional processes that do. Such understandings are important, we claim, as theory is applied in more complex geometries and extended to include turbulence and collisions in combination. 1L. Onsager, Phys. The Therapeutic Response of in Immune-suppressed Mice Three Human Tumor Lines Maintained

Abstract:SUMMARY Studies were made of the growth and therapeutic re- sponse of three lines of human tumor serially transplanted in immune-suppressed mice. They included a well-differen- tiated colonic carcinoma (HX 13), a poorly differentiated colonic carcinoma (HX 18), and undifferentiated small-cell carcinoma of the bronchus (HX 29). Their histological appearance and growth rates were stable, with volume-doubling times ranging from 6 to 12 days. Studies by the technique of labeled mitoses showed that the growth kinetics of the three tumor lines were very similar, with median intermitotic times in the range of 26 to 35 hr. An analysis of the incidence of single and double takes revealed evidence for variation in susceptibility among the recipient mice. One tumor (HX 18) was transplantable with single-cell suspensions but 105 cells were required for 50C4 takes. The response of the tumors to a range of chemothera- peutic agents was studied. There was evidence that drugs that are known to be effective in the treatment of patients did well, in particular 5-fluorouracil against the colonic tumors and cyclophosphamide against the bronchial carci- noma. Long-term regressions induced by cyclophosphamide in the bronchial carcinoma may reflect assistance from host defense mechanisms. INTRODUCTION At present there is considerable interest in the properties of human tumors transplanted into immune-deficient mice. The achievement of growth in such xenografts has now been reported from a number of laboratories (2, 4, 6-8, 11, 16), and information on their response to treatment has also appeared (1, 3, 9, 20). At this stage little is known about the biological characteristics of the xenografts, and the extent to which their therapeutic response reflects that of the tumor within the original patients or indeed of any human tumors is not known. The work reported here derived from an earlier study of the growth kinetics of xenografted human tumors (17). Nonlinear Transport Processes in Tokamak Plasmas. Part I: The Collisional Regimes

Abstract:An application of the thermodynamic field theory (TFT) to transport processes in L-mode tokamak plasmas is presented. The nonlinear corrections to the linear (Onsager) transport coefficients in the collisional regimes are derived. A quite encouraging result is the appearance of an asymmetry between the Pfirsch-Schlueter (P-S) ion and electron transport coefficients: the latter presents a nonlinear correction, which is absent for the ions, and makes the radial electron coefficients much larger than the former. Explicit calculations and comparisons between the neoclassical results and the TFT predictions for JET plasmas are also reported. We found that the nonlinear electron P-S transport coefficients exceed the values provided by neoclassical theory by a factor, which may be of the order 100. The nonlinear classical coefficients exceed the neoclassical ones by a factor, which may be of order 2. The expressions of the ion transport coefficients, determined by the neoclassical theory in these two regimes, remain unaltered. The low-collisional regimes i.e., the plateau and the banana regimes, are analyzed in the second part of this work.

Non-Abelian Quantum Transport and Thermosqueezing Effects

Abstract:Modern quantum experiments provide examples of transport with non-commuting quantities, offering a tool to understand the interplay between thermal and quantum effects. Here we set forth a theory for non-Abelian transport in the linear response regime. Our key insight is to use generalized Gibbs ensembles with non-commuting charges as the basic building blocks and strict charge-preserving unitaries in a collisional setup. The linear response framework is then built using a collisional model between two reservoirs. We show that the transport coefficients obey Onsager reciprocity. Moreover, we find that quantum coherence, associated to the non-commutativity, acts so as to reduce the net entropy production, when compared to the case of commuting transport. This therefore provides a clear connection between quantum coherent transport and dissipation. As an example, we study heat and squeezing fluxes in bosonic systems, characterizing a set of thermosqueezing coefficients with potential applications in metrology and heat-to-work conversion in the quantum regime.

Abstract:Critical phenomena in non-equilibrium systems have been studied by means of a wide variety of theoretical and experimental approaches. Mode-coupling, renormalization group, complex Lie algebras and diagrammatic techniques are some of the usual theoretical tools. Experimental studies include light and inelastic neutron scattering, X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy, microwave interferometry and several other techniques. Nevertheless no conclusive reatment has been developed from the basic principles of a thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes. We have developed a formalism in which we obtain correlation functions as field averages of the associated functions. By applying such formalism we attempt to find out if the resulting correlation functions will inherit the mathematical properties (integrability, generalized homogeneity, scaling laws) of its parent potentials, and we will also use these correlation functions to study the behavior of macroscopic systems far from equilibrium, specially in the neighborhood of critical points or dynamic phase transitions. As a working example we will consider the mono-critical behavior of a non-equilibrium binary fluid mixture close to its consolute point.

Exact finite-time correlation functions for multi-terminal setups: Connecting theoretical frameworks for quantum transport and thermodynamics

Abstract:Transport in open quantum systems can be explored through various theoretical frameworks, including the quantum master equation, scattering matrix, and Heisenberg equation of motion. The choice of framework depends on factors such as the presence of interactions, the coupling strength between the system and environment, and whether the focus is on steady-state or transient regimes. Existing literature treats these frameworks independently, lacking a unified perspective. Our work addresses this gap by clarifying the role and status of these approaches using a minimal single-level quantum dot model in a two-terminal setup under voltage and temperature biases. We derive analytical expressions for particle and energy currents and their fluctuations in both steady-state and transient regimes. Exact results from the Heisenberg equation are shown to align with scattering matrix and master equation approaches within their respective validity regimes. Crucially, we establish a protocol for the weak-coupling limit, bridging the applicability of master equations at weak-coupling with Heisenberg or scattering matrix approaches at arbitrary coupling strength.

Uncertainty Relations in Thermodynamics of Irreversible Processes on a Mesoscopic Scale

Abstract:Studies of mesoscopic structures have now become a leading and rapidly evolving research field ranging from physics, chemistry, and mineralogy to life sciences. The increasing miniaturization of devices with length scales of a few nanometers is leading to radical changes not only in the realization of new materials but also in shedding light on our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature that govern the dynamics of systems at the mesoscopic scale. On the basis of recent experimental results and previous theoretical research, we investigate thermodynamic processes in small systems in Onsager's region. We show that fundamental quantities such as the total entropy production, the thermodynamic variables conjugate to the thermodynamic forces, and the Glansdorff-Prigogine's dissipative variable may be discretized at the mesoscopic scale. We establish the canonical commutation rules (ccr) valid at the mesoscopic scale. The numerical value of the discretization constant is estimated experimentally. Abstract:We study the thermodynamics of open systems weakly driven out-of-equilibrium by nonconservative and time-dependent forces using the linear regime of stochastic thermodynamics. We make use of conservation laws to identify the potential and nonconservative components of the forces. This allows us to formulate a unified near-equilibrium thermodynamics. For nonequilibrium steady states, we obtain an Onsager theory ensuring nonsingular response matrices that is consistent with phenomenological linear irreversible thermodynamics. For time-dependent driving protocols that do not produce nonconservative forces, we identify the equilibrium ensemble from which Green-Kubo relations are recovered. For arbitrary periodic drivings, the averaged entropy production (EP) is expressed as an independent sum over each driving frequency of non-negative contributions. These contributions are bilinear in the nonconservative and conservative forces and involve a novel generalized Onsager matrix that is symmetric. In the most general case of arbitrary time-dependent drivings, we advance a novel decomposition of the EP rate into two non-negative contributions - one solely due to nonconservative forces and the other solely due to deviation from the instantaneous steady-state - directly implying a minimum entropy production principle close to equilibrium. This setting reveals the geometric structure of near-equilibrium thermodynamics and generalizes previous approaches to cases with nonconservative forces.

Abstract:This paper overviews the state of the art in the study of nonequilibrium gas flows with nonclassical transport, in which the Stokes and Fourier laws are violated (and, accordingly, the Chapman–Enskog method is inapplicable). For a reliable validation of anomalous transport effects, we use computational methods of different nature: the direct solution of the Boltzmann equation and direct simulation Monte Carlo. Nonclassical anomalous transport is manifested on scales of 5–10 mean free paths, which confirms the fact that a highly nonequilibrium flow is a prerequisite for the detection of the effects. Two-dimensional flow problems are considered, namely, the supersonic flow over a flat plate in the transient regime and the supersonic flow through membranes (lattices), where the flow behind the lattice corresponds to the spatially nonuniform relaxation problem. In this region, nonequilibrium distributions demonstrating anomalous transport are formed. The relationship of the effect with the second law of thermodynamics is discussed, the possibilities of experimental verification are considered, and the prospects of creating new microdevices on this basis are outlined.

Abstract:In this work, we put forward a general phase-space transport theory in axisymmetric tokamak plasmas based upon the concept of zonal state (ZS). Within this theoretical framework, the ZS corresponds to a renormalized plasma nonlinear equilibrium consisting of phase-space zonal structures (PSZS) and zonal electromagnetic fields (ZFs) which evolve self-consistently with symmetry breaking fluctuations and sources/collisions. More specifically, our approach involves deriving governing equations for the evolution of particle distribution functions (i.e, PSZS), which can be used to compute the corresponding macro-/meso-scale evolving magnetized plasma equilibrium adopting the Chew Goldberger Low (CGL) description, separating the spatiotemporal microscale structures. The nonlinear physics of ZFs and of geodesic acoustic modes/energetic particle driven geodesic acoustic modes is then analyzed to illustrate the implications of our theory.

Corrections to diffusion in interacting quantum systems

Abstract:Transport and the approach to equilibrium in interacting classical and quantum systems is a challenging problem of both theoretical and experimental interest. One useful organizing principle characterizing equilibration is the dissipative universality class, the most prevalent one being diffusion. In this paper, we use the effective field theory (EFT) of diffusion to systematically obtain universal power-law corrections to diffusion. We then employ large-scale simulations of classical and quantum systems to explore their validity. In particular, we find universal scaling functions for the corrections to the dynamical structure factor $\langle n(x,t)n\rangle$, in the presence of a single $U(1)$ or $SU(2)$ charge in systems with and without particle-hole symmetry, and present the framework to generalize the calculation to multiple charges. Classical simulations show remarkable agreement with EFT predictions for subleading corrections, pushing precision tests of effective theories for thermalizing systems to an unprecedented level. Moving to quantum systems, we perform large-scale tensor-network simulations in unitary and noisy 1d Floquet systems with conserved magnetization. We find a qualitative agreement with EFT which becomes quantitative in the case of noisy systems. Additionally, we show how the knowledge of EFT corrections allows for fitting methods, which can improve the estimation of transport parameters at the intermediate times accessible by simulations and experiments. Finally, we explore non-linear response in quantum systems and find that EFT provides an accurate prediction for its behavior. Our results provide a basis for a better understanding of the non-linear phenomena present in thermalizing systems.

Abstract:The theory of transport phenomena in multicomponent electrolyte solutions is presented here through the integration of continuum mechanics, electromagnetism, and non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The governing equations of irreversible thermodynamics, including balance laws, Maxwell's equations, internal entropy production, and linear laws relating the thermodynamic forces and fluxes, are derived. Green-Kubo relations for the transport coefficients connecting electrochemical potential gradients and diffusive fluxes are obtained in terms of the flux-flux time correlations. The relationship between the derived transport coefficients and those of the Stefan-Maxwell and infinitely dilute frameworks are presented, and the connection between the transport matrix and experimentally measurable quantities is described. To exemplify application of the derived Green-Kubo relations in molecular simulations, the matrix of transport coefficients for lithium and chloride ions in dimethyl sulfoxide is computed using classical molecular dynamics and compared with experimental measurements.

Abstract:State-of-the-art approaches to extract transport coefficients of many-body quantum systems broadly fall into two categories: (i) they target the linear-response regime in terms of equilibrium correlation functions of the closed system; or (ii) they consider an open-system situation typically modeled by a Lindblad equation, where a nonequilibrium steady state emerges from driving the system at its boundaries. While quantitative agreement between (i) and (ii) has been found for selected model and parameter choices, also disagreement has been pointed out in the literature. Studying magnetization transport in the spin-1/2 XXZ chain, we here demonstrate that at weak driving, the nonequilibrium steady state in an open system, including its buildup in time, can remarkably be constructed just on the basis of correlation functions in the closed system. We numerically illustrate this direct correspondence of closed-system and open-system dynamics, and show that it allows the treatment of comparatively large open systems, usually only accessible to matrix product state simulations. We also point out potential pitfalls when extracting transport coefficients from nonequilibrium steady states in finite systems.

Nonlinear and nonlocal models of heat conduction in continuum thermodynamics

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop a general constitutive scheme within continuum thermodynamics to describe the behavior of heat flow in deformable media. Starting from a classical thermodynamic approach, the rate-type constitutive equations are defined in the material (Lagrangian) description where the standard time derivative satisfies the principle of objectivity. All constitutive functions are required to depend on a common set of independent variables and to be consistent with thermodynamics. The statement of the Second Law is formulated in a general nonlocal form, where the entropy production rate is prescribed by a non-negative constitutive function and the extra entropy flux obeys a no-flow boundary condition. The thermodynamic response is then developed based on Coleman-Noll procedure. In the local formulation, the free energy potential and the rate of entropy production function are assumed to depend on temperature, temperature gradient and heat-flux vector along with their time derivatives. This approach results in rate-type constitutive equations for the heat-flux vector that are intrinsically consistent with the Second Law and easily amenable to analysis. A huge class of linear and nonlinear models of the rate type are recovered (e.g., Cattaneo-Maxwell's, Jeffreys-like, Green-Naghdi's, Quintanilla's and Burgers-like heat conductors). In the (weakly) nonlocal formulation of the second law, both the entropy production rate and an entropy extra-flux vector are assumed to depend on temperature, temperature gradient and heat-flux vector along with their spatial gradients and time derivatives. Within this (classical) thermodynamic framework the nonlocal Guyer-Krumhansl model and some nonlinear generalizations devised by Cimmelli and Sellitto are obtained

Towards a nonequilibrium thermodynamics: a self-contained macroscopic description of driven diffusive systems

Abstract:In this paper we present a self-contained macroscopic description of diffusive systems interacting with boundary reservoirs and under the action of external fields. The approach is based on simple postulates which are suggested by a wide class of microscopic stochastic models where they are satisfied. The description however does not refer in any way to an underlying microscopic dynamics: the only input required are transport coefficients as functions of thermodynamic variables, which are experimentally accessible. The basic postulates are local equilibrium which allows a hydrodynamic description of the evolution, the Einstein relation among the transport coefficients, and a variational principle defining the out of equilibrium free energy. Associated to the variational principle there is a Hamilton-Jacobi equation satisfied by the free energy, very useful for concrete calculations. Correlations over a macroscopic scale are, in our scheme, a generic property of nonequilibrium states. Correlation functions of any order can be calculated from the free energy functional which is generically a non local functional of thermodynamic variables. Special attention is given to the notion of equilibrium state from the standpoint of nonequilibrium.

Both formulations are extended up to infinite order of an external force in compact forms and their relationship is clarified through a direct transformation.

Abstract:Transport at a quantum critical point depends sensitively on the relative magnitudes of temperature, frequency and electric field. Here we used the gauge/gravity correspondence to compute the full temperature and, generally nonlinear, electric field dependence of the electrical conductivity for some model critical theories. In the special case of 2+1 dimensions we are also able to find the full time-dependent response of the system to an arbitrary time dependent external electric field. The response of the system is instantaneous, implying a frequency independent conductivity. We describe a mechanism that rationalizes the instantaneous response.

Thermal Transport in a Noncommutative Hydrodynamics

Abstract:We find the hydrodynamic equations of a system of particles constrained to be in the lowest Landau level. We interpret the hydrodynamic theory as a Hamiltonian system with the Poisson brackets between the hydrodynamic variables determined from the noncommutativity of space. We argue that the most general hydrodynamic theory can be obtained from this Hamiltonian system by allowing the Righi-Leduc coefficient to be an arbitrary function of thermodynamic variables. We compute the Righi-Leduc coefficients at high temperatures and show that it satisfies the requirements of particle-hole symmetry, which we outline.

Unifying Theories for Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics

Abstract:The question of deriving general force/flux relationships that apply out of the linear response regime is a central topic of theories for nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. This work applies an information theory perspective to compute approximate force/flux relations and compares the result with traditional alternatives. If it can be said that there is a consensus on the form of response theories in driven, nonequilibrium transient dynamics, then that consensus is consistent with maximizing the entropy of a distribution over transition space. This agreement requires the problem of force/flux relationships to be described entirely in terms of such transition distributions, rather than steady-state properties (such as near-equilibrium works) or distributions over trajectory space (such as maximum caliber). Within the transition space paradigm, it is actually simpler to work in the fully nonlinear regime without relying on any assumptions about the steady-state or long-time properties. Our results are compared to extensive numerical simulations of two very different systems. The first is a the periodic Lorentz gas under constant external force, extended with angular velocity and physically realistic inelastic scattering. The second is an $\alpha$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain, extended with a Langevin thermostat that couples only to individual harmonic modes. Although we simulate both starting from transient initial conditions, the maximum entropy structure of the transition distribution is clearly evident on both atomistic and intermediate size scales. The result encourages further development of empirical laws for nonequilibrium statistical mechanics by employing analogies with standard maximum entropy techniques -- even in cases where large deviation principles cannot be rigorously proven.

Non-equilibrium turbulent transport in convective plumes obtained from closure theory

Abstract:Non-equilibrium property of turbulence modifies characteristics of turbulent transport. With the aid of response-function formalism, such non-equilibrium effects in turbulent transport can be represented by the temporal variation of the turbulent energy ($K$) and its dissipation rate ($\varepsilon$) along the mean stream through the advective derivatives of $K$ and $\varepsilon$. Applications of this effect to the turbulent convection with plumes are considered for the first time in this work. The non-equilibrium transport effects associated with plumes are addressed in two aspects. Firstly, the effect associated with a single plume is evaluated using data measured in the recent plume/jet experiments. The second argument is developed for the collective turbulent transport associated with multiple plumes mimicking the stellar convection zone. In this second case, for the purpose of capturing the plume motions into the advective derivatives, use has to be made of the time--space double averaging procedure, where the turbulent fluctuations are divided into the coherent or dispersion component (which represents plume motions) and incoherent or random component. With the aid of the transport equations of the coherent velocity stress and the incoherent counterpart, the interaction between the dispersion and random fluctuations are also discussed in the context of convective turbulent flows with plumes. It is shown from these analyses that the non-equilibrium effect associated with plume motions is of a great deal of relevance in the convective turbulence modelling.
