Abstract:In this article we focus on $L^{p}$ estimates for two types of multilinear lacunary maximal averages over hypersurfaces with curvature conditions. Moreover, we give a different proof for the bilinear lacunary spherical maximal functions. To obtain our results, we make use of the $L^1$-improving estimates of multilinear averaging operators. We also obtain $L^p$-improving estimates for certain multilinear averages by means of the nonlinear Brascamp-Lieb inequality.

Abstract:In this article, we focus on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^d)\times\cdots\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^d)\rightarrow L^{2/m}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ estimates for multilinear maximal averages over non-degenerate hypersurfaces. Our findings is new for $m$-linear averages with $m\geq3$, and represent a reproof of the recent result of T. Borges, B. Foster, and Y. Ou on the curvature conditions of the hypersurfaces required in establishing $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^d)\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^d)\rightarrow L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ estimates of bilinear maximal functions.

Interpolation via weighted $l_1$ minimization

Abstract:Functions of interest are often smooth and sparse in some sense, and both priors should be taken into account when interpolating sampled data. Classical linear interpolation methods are effective under strong regularity assumptions, but cannot incorporate nonlinear sparsity structure. At the same time, nonlinear methods such as $l_1$ minimization can reconstruct sparse functions from very few samples, but do not necessarily encourage smoothness. Here we show that weighted $l_1$ minimization effectively merges the two approaches, promoting both sparsity and smoothness in reconstruction. More precisely, we provide specific choices of weights in the $l_1$ objective to achieve rates for functions with coefficient sequences in weighted $l_p$ spaces, $p<=1$. We consider the implications of these results for spherical harmonic and polynomial interpolation, in the univariate and multivariate setting. Along the way, we extend concepts from compressive sensing such as the restricted isometry property and null space property to accommodate weighted sparse expansions; these developments should be of independent interest in the study of structured sparse approximations and continuous-time compressive sensing problems.

Lebesgue bounds for multilinear spherical and lacunary maximal averages

Abstract:We establish $L^{p_1}(\mathbb R^d) \times \cdots \times L^{p_n}(\mathbb R^d) \rightarrow L^r(\mathbb R^d)$ bounds for spherical averaging operators $\mathcal A^n$ in dimensions $d \geq 2$ for indices $1\le p_1,\dots , p_n\le \infty$ and $\frac{1}{p_1}+\cdots +\frac{1}{p_n}=\frac{1}{r}$. We obtain this result by first showing that $\mathcal A^n$ maps $L^1 \times \cdots \times L^1 \rightarrow L^1$. Our result extends that in \cite{IPS2021} for the case of $n = 2$. We also obtain similar estimates for lacunary maximal spherical averages in the largest possible open region of indices.

Abstract:The objective of the present paper is to establish three Hardy-type inequalities in which the arithmetic mean over a sequence of non-negative real numbers is replaced by some weighted arithmetic mean over some nested subsets of the given sequence of numbers. One of these inequalities stems from a calculation in a paper of Bouthat and Mashreghi on semi-infinite matrices.

$L^p$ averages of the Fourier transform in finite fields

Abstract:The Fourier transform plays a central role in many geometric and combinatorial problems cast in vector spaces over finite fields. In general, sets with good uniform bounds for the Fourier transform are less structured, more `random', and can often be analysed more easily. In many cases obtaining good \emph{uniform} bounds is not possible, even if `most' points admit good pointwise bounds. Motivated by this, we propose a more nuanced approach where one seeks to bound the $L^p$ averages of the Fourier transform instead of only the maximum. We explore this idea by considering several examples and find that a rich theory emerges. Further, we provide various applications of this new approach; including to sumset type problems, the finite fields distance conjecture, and the problem of counting $k$-simplices inside a given set.

$L^{p}-$estimates for uncentered spherical averages and lacunary maximal functions

Abstract:The primary goal of this paper is to introduce bilinear analogues of uncentered spherical averages, Nikodym averages associated with spheres and the associated bilinear maximal functions. We obtain $L^p$-estimates for uncentered bilinear maximal functions for dimensions $d\geq2$. Moreover, we also discuss the one-dimensional case. In the process of developing these results, we also establish new and interesting results in the linear case. In particular, we will prove $L^p$-improving properties for single scale averaging operators and $L^p$-estimates for lacunary maximal functions in this context.

Abstract:We establish near-optimal mixed norm estimates for the X-ray transform restricted to polynomial curves with a weight that is a power of the affine arclength. The bounds that we establish depend only on the spatial dimension and the degree of the polynomial. Some of our results are new even in the well-curved case.

Abstract:We prove $L^p({\mathbb R}^3)$ to $L^p_s({\mathbb R}^3)$ Sobolev improvement theorems for local averaging operators over real analytic surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$. For most such operators, in a sense made precise in the paper, the set of $(p,s)$ for which we prove $L^p({\mathbb R}^3)$ to $L^p_s({\mathbb R}^3)$ boundedness is optimal up to endpoints. Using an interpolation argument in conjunction with these $L^p({\mathbb R}^3)$ to $L^p_s({\mathbb R}^3)$ results we obtain an $L^p({\mathbb R}^3)$ to $L^q({\mathbb R}^3)$ improvement theorem, and the set of exponents $(p,q)$ obtained will also usually be optimal up to endpoints. The advantage the methods of this paper have over those of the author's earlier papers is that the oscillatory integral methods of the earlier papers, closely tied to the Van der Corput lemma, allow one to only prove 1/2 of a derivative of surface measure Fourier transform decay, while the methods of this paper, when combined with appropriate resolution of singularities methods, allow one to go up to the maximum possible 1 derivative. This allows us to prove the stronger sharp up to endpoints results.

Abstract:Let $G(g;x):=\sum_{n\leq x}g(n)$ be the summatory function of an arithmetical function $g(n)$. In this paper, we prove that we can write weighted averages of an arbitrary fixed number $N$ of arithmetical functions $g_{j}(n),\,j\in\left\{ 1,\dots,N\right\} $ as an integral involving the convolution (in the sense of Laplace) of $G_{j}(x),\,j\in\left\{ 1,\dots,N\right\} $. Furthermore, we prove an identity that allows us to obtain known results about averages of arithmetical functions in a very simple and natural way, and overcome some technical limitations for some well-known problems.

Abstract:We show that on a $\sigma$-finite measure preserving system $X = (X,\nu, T)$, the non-conventional ergodic averages $$ \mathbb{E}_{n \in [N]} \Lambda(n) f(T^n x) g(T^{P(n)} x)$$ converge pointwise almost everywhere for $f \in L^{p_1}(X)$, $g \in L^{p_2}(X)$, and $1/p_1 + 1/p_2 \leq 1$, where $P$ is a polynomial with integer coefficients of degree at least $2$. This had previously been established with the von Mangoldt weight $\Lambda$ replaced by the constant weight $1$ by the first and third authors with Mirek, and by the Möbius weight $\mu$ by the fourth author. The proof is based on combining tools from both of these papers, together with several Gowers norm and polynomial averaging operator estimates on approximants to the von Mangoldt function of ''Cramér'' and ''Heath-Brown'' type.

Abstract:Let $k\in \mathbb Z_+$ and $(X, \mathcal B(X), \mu)$ be a probability space equipped with a family of commuting invertible measure-preserving transformations $T_1,\ldots, T_k \colon X\to X$. Let $P_1,\ldots, P_k\in\mathbb Z[\rm n]$ be polynomials with integer coefficients and distinct degrees. We establish pointwise almost everywhere convergence of the multilinear polynomial ergodic averages \[A_{N; X, T_1,\ldots, T_k}^{P_1,\ldots, P_k}(f_1,\ldots, f_k)(x) = \frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^Nf_1\big(T_1^{P_1(n)}x\big)\cdots f_k\big(T_k^{P_k(n)}x\big), \qquad x\in X, \] as $N\to\infty$ for any functions $f_1, \ldots, f_k\in L^{\infty}(X)$. Besides a couple of results in the bilinear setting (when $k=2$ and then only for single transformations), this is the first pointwise result for general polynomial multilinear ergodic averages in arbitrary measure-preserving systems. This answers a question of Bergelson from 1996 in the affirmative for any polynomials with distinct degrees, and makes progress on the Furstenberg-Bergelson-Leibman conjecture. In this paper, we build a versatile multilinear circle method by developing the Ionescu-Wainger multiplier theory for the set of canonical fractions, which gives a positive answer to a question of Ionescu and Wainger from 2005. We also establish sharp multilinear $L^p$-improving bounds and an inverse theorem in higher order Fourier analysis for averages over polynomial corner configurations, which we use to establish a multilinear analogue of Weyl's inequality and its real counterpart, a Sobolev smoothing inequality.

Abstract:We obtain some weighted $L^{p}$-Sobolev estimates with gain on $p$ and the weight for solutions of the $\overline{\partial}$-equation in lineally convex domains of finite type in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and apply them to obtain weighted $L^{p}$-Sobolev estimates for weighted Bergman projections of convex domains of finite type for quite general weights equivalent to a power of the distance to the boundary.

Convolution Operators in Matrix Weighted, Variable Lebesgue Spaces

Abstract:We extend the theory of matrix weights to the variable Lebesgue spaces. The theory of matrix $\mathcal{A}_p$ weights has attracted considerable attention beginning with the work of Nazarov, Treil, and Volberg in the 1990s. We extend this theory by generalizing the matrix $\mathcal{A}_p$ condition to the variable exponent setting. We prove boundedness of the convolution operator $\mathbf{f}\mapsto \phi\ast \mathbf{F}$ for $\phi \in C_c^\infty(\Omega)$, and show that the approximate identity defined using $\phi$ converges in matrix weighted, variable Lebesgue spaces $L^{p(\cdot)}(W,\Omega)$ for $W$ in matrix $\mathcal{A}_{p(\cdot)}$. Our approach to this problem is through averaging operators; these results are of interest in their own right. As an application of our work, we prove a version of the classical $H=W$ theorem for matrix weighted, variable exponent Sobolev spaces.

Variational Estimates for Bilinear Ergodic Averages Along Sublinear Sequences

Abstract:We prove long variational estimates for the bilinear ergodic averages \[ A_{N;X}(f,g)(x) = \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=1}^N f(T^{\lfloor \sqrt{n} \rfloor}x) g(T^nx) \] on an arbitrary measure preserving system $(X,\mu,T)$ for the full expected range, i.e. whenever $f \in L^{p_1}(X)$ and $g \in L^{p_2}(X)$ with $1<p_1,p_2<\infty$. In particular, if $\frac{1}{p}=\frac{1}{p_1}+\frac{1}{p_2}$ we show that the long $r$-variation of $A_{N;X}$ maps $L^{p_1}(X) \times L^{p_2}(X)$ into $L^p(X)$ for any $p>\frac{1}{2}$, which is sharp up to the endpoint. If $p \geq 1$ we obtain long variational estimates for the full expected range $r>2$ and if $p<1$ we obtain a range of $r>2+\varepsilon_{p_1,p_2}$ where $\varepsilon_{p_1,p_2}>0$ depends only on $p_1$ and $p_2$. As a consequence, we obtain bilinear maximal estimates \[ \left\| \sup_{N \in \mathbb{N}} |A_{N;X}(f,g)| \right\|_{L^p(X)} \leq C_{p_1,p_2} \|f\|_{L^{p_1}(X)} \|g\|_{L^{p_2}(X)} \] for any $1<p_1,p_2 \leq \infty$.

$L^p$-improving bounds of maximal functions along planar curves

Abstract:In this paper, we study the $L^p(\mathbb{R}^2)$-improving bounds, i.e., $L^p(\mathbb{R}^2)\rightarrow L^q(\mathbb{R}^2)$ estimates, of the maximal function $M_{\gamma}$ along a plane curve $(t,\gamma(t))$, where $$M_{\gamma}f(x_1,x_2):=\sup_{u\in [1,2]}\left|\int_{0}^{1}f(x_1-ut,x_2-u \gamma(t))\,\textrm{d}t\right|,$$ and $\gamma$ is a general plane curve satisfying some suitable smoothness and curvature conditions. We obtain $M_{\gamma} : L^p(\mathbb{R}^2)\rightarrow L^q(\mathbb{R}^2)$ if $(\frac{1}{p},\frac{1}{q})\in \Delta\cup \{(0,0)\}$ and $(\frac{1}{p},\frac{1}{q})$ satisfying $1+(1 +\omega)(\frac{1}{q}-\frac{1}{p})>0$, where $\Delta:=\{(\frac{1}{p},\frac{1}{q}):\ \frac{1}{2p}<\frac{1}{q}\leq \frac{1}{p}, \frac{1}{q}>\frac{3}{p}-1 \}$ and $\omega:=\limsup_{t\rightarrow 0^{+}}\frac{\ln|\gamma(t)|}{\ln t}$. This result is sharp except for some borderline cases. As Hickman stated in [J. Funct. Anal. 270 (2016), pp. 560--608], this is a very different situation.

An interpolation result for $A_1$ weights with applications to fractional Poincaré inequalities

Abstract:We characterize the real interpolation space between weighted $L^1$ and $W^{1,1}$ spaces on arbitrary domains different from $\mathbb{R}^n$, when the weights are positive powers of the distance to the boundary multiplied by an $A_1$ weight. As an application of this result we obtain weighted fractional Poincaré inequalities with sharp dependence on the fractional parameter $s$ (for $s$ close to 1) and show that they are equivalent to a weighted Poincaré inequality for the gradient.
