Abstract:In this work, the effects of deposition potential and the surface preparation, such as the cathodic activation and the sandblasting on the nucleation and growth of zinc-nickel alloy from acidic aqueous solution containing 0.47 and 0.56 M of zinc ions and nicke ions l respectively in presence of additives were studied. The zinc-nickel were deposited on as-machined and sandblasted substrates not activated or activated at 0, 50 and 150 A dm −2 . The Scharifker–Hills and Palomar-Pardavé models were used to analyse the potentiostatic current-transient curves, and revealed that the nucleation of zinc–nickel remains instantaneous with a typical three-dimensional growth process, no matter the surface preparation. However, the characteristics and the features of zinc–nickel alloys coatings are vastly modified, in particular the morphology and the crystal structure, although the crystallized phase (the cubic γ-phase) remains identical. However, the preferential growth varies according to the sandblast process and thus the roughness of the substrate, which implies different crystallite size and adhesion of the coating on the substrate.
