Impacts of Extreme Ultraviolet Late Phase of the Solar Flare on Ionospheric Electrodynamics

Abstract:Previous investigations of ionospheric electrodynamical responses to solar flares primarily focused on the main phases (MPs) of solar flares. Typical solar irradiance models for driving global ionosphere models do not include the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) late phase (ELP) of flares, which was recently observed with new high-quality solar EUV spectra. Thus, it is still unclear how ionospheric electrodynamics respond to the flare ELP. Here, we analyzed the ionospheric electrodynamical response to the MP and ELP of the X9.3 flare on 2017 September 6, using observations from ground magnetometers, along with simulation results from an ionosphere–thermosphere coupled model. Observations indicated an intensification of the dayside eastward equatorial electrojet (EEJ) by approximately 12 nT at the ELP peak as compared to the quiet day reference. Additionally, the dayside eastward electric field increased due to the ELP, which is different from the reduction of dayside electric fields during MP. The upward E × B plasma drifts decreased by 2.5 m s –1 during MP but increased by 0.75 m s –1 during the ELP. Altitude-dependent responses of ionospheric conductivities to the ELP modulated the relative contribution of the E- and F-region wind dynamo to zonal electric fields, resulting in an overall increase in the daytime eastward electric fields. Furthermore, combined effects of electric fields and conductivities enhancements contributed to EEJ intensification during the ELP. This study enhances our understanding of how solar flares with ELP change global ionospheric electric fields and currents.

Ionospheric Electrodynamic Response to Solar Flares in September 2017

Abstract:In this work, the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) is used to investigate the responses of ionospheric electrodynamic processes to the solar flares at the flare peaks and the underlying physical mechanisms on 6 and 10 September 2017. Simulations show that solar flares increased global daytime currents and reduced the eastward electric fields during the daytime from the equator to middle latitudes. Furthermore, westward equatorial electric fields and equatorial counter electrojets occurred in the early morning. At the flare peak, these electrodynamic responses are predominantly related to the enhanced E-region conductivity by flares, as the responses of neutral winds and F-region conductivity to flares are negligible. Specifically, the Cowling conductance enhancement is not the major process causing the reduction of zonal electric fields. This electric field reduction is primarily associated with the decrease of the ratio between the field line-integrated wind-driven currents and the conductance. The flare-induced conductivity enhancement is larger but the background wind speed is smaller in the E-region than in the F-region, as a result, the increase of total integrated wind-driven currents is less than the conductance enhancement. Data-driven Simulation of Effects of a Solar Flare with Extreme-ultraviolet Late Phase on Ionospheric Electron Density

Abstract:Effects of the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) late phase of solar flares on the ionosphere were rarely studied. Here we simulated such effects on the ionospheric electron density using an ionosphere−thermosphere coupled model driven by the realistic solar spectrum observed during the X1.8 flare on 2012 October 23. Global total electron content (TEC) observations and simulations showed that the dayside ionospheric TEC during the EUV late phase increased more than that of the flare's main phase. We examined the performance of the model for flares with EUV late phase. The results showed that the F-region electron density enhancement and recovery did not vary in the same pace as the temporal variations of the EUV late phase, and the presence of the EUV late phase prolonged the recovery of electron density by ∼9 hr. We also found that the enhancement in electron density was mainly determined by the chemical production, while the recovery of electron density was primarily controlled by the electric field transport effects. This study enhanced understanding of the intricate physical and photochemical processes governing Earth's space environment and similar planetary systems during solar flare events with EUV late phase.

High‐Speed Solar Wind Imprints on the Ionosphere During the Recovery Phase of the August 2018 Geomagnetic Storm

Abstract:The low-latitude ionospheric TEC observed by the Beidou geostationary satellite showed large enhancement during 27-30 August 2018 of the storm recovery phase. The cause of the positive ionospheric storm during the recovery phase has yet to be resolved. In this study, multiple observations, including aurora, high-latitude convection, potential, and the TEC maps, were used to study the contributions from the high-speed solar wind to the ionosphere during the recovery phase of the storm. It was found that the high-speed solar wind was effective in modulating the intensity and the size of the auroral oval, high-latitude convection, and potential pattern. The Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model generally reproduced the observed evolution of the ionosphere at high latitudes during the recovery phase of the storm, and it was used to quantitatively investigate the effects of the high-speed solar wind on the recovery phase ionosphere. The results suggested that the high-speed solar wind caused increase of TEC at auroral oval was about 2 TECU. The high-speed solar wind, combined with oscillating interplanetary magnetic field Bz, led to the enhancement of the low-latitude prompt penetrating electric fields and increased the low-latitude TEC of about 2 TECU. Therefore, the high-speed solar wind was a possible driver to the ionospheric positive storm during the recovery phase, but the causes for the more than 10-TECU enhancement at low and middle latitudes during the recovery phase of this event are unknown.
Ionospheric Current Variations Induced by the Solar Flares of 6 and 10 September 2017

Abstract:We examine the global ionospheric current in relation to X9.33 disk and X8.28 limb flares, which had significant differences in their solar X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) fluxes using the ground-based magnetometer data. At the peak of X9.33 flare, when X-ray and EUV radiations were significantly enhanced, the northern current vortex was situated at (40 degrees N, 12 LT), while the southern current vortex was found at (30 degrees S, 13LT). In comparison to the X8.28 flare, the northern current vortex was seen at (16 degrees N, 12LT), while the southern current vortex was situated at (35 degrees S, 14LT), which was 2 hr earlier in local time compared to those observed in the X9.33 flare. The changes in the total current intensity of the X9.33 flare is about 16% less than that of the X8.28 flare, thus revealing that the current variations relative to both flares are due to solar flux and universal time variations. The daytime X9.33 flare northern current vortex is stronger, while the southern vortex is less intense than the corresponding vortex of X8.28 flare. Even though both flares happened in equinox, the current vortices are nearly symmetric. There were significant hemispheric changes in the focus position leading to the hemispheric asymmetry. Our results indicated that both the enhanced X-ray and EUV fluxes during flares could have impacts on the ionospheric electric field and current, but their relative contributions and the underlying physics need further investigations.

Abstract:The interval 4–10 September 2017 was one of the most flare‐productive periods of the solar cycle 24, producing strong‐to‐severe space weather episodes. Thus, on 6 September, the solar active region AR 30023 produced an X‐9 level flare. The arrival of the associated coronal mass ejection produced severe geomagnetic storming on 7 and 8 September, preceded by two significant solar flare effects (Sfe) that could be seen in the lit hemisphere. In this article, we analyze the impact of these flares on the ionosphere as registered on the vertical incidence ionospheric sounder located at Ebre Observatory. We put the emphasis on the use of this instrument to detect solar flares by means of the absorption observed in its ionograms. We also analyze the impacts of these flares on the Earth's magnetic field and the temporal evolution of the second Sfe event using the technique of spherical elementary current systems, which allows tracing in detail the current system evolution during the Sfe lifetime. As expected, a sharp increase in current intensities occurred at the beginning. The peak of the disturbance was reached after a few minutes, when hard X‐rays were dominant, while a slow decay followed the advent of soft X‐rays and EUV rays. The modeled current systems appear abnormally displaced in longitude with respect to the subsolar point. The northern vortex shows up about 2 hr in advance of the subsolar point meridian, while the southern vortex is about 3 hr behind it. Both remain static, showing no significant shift over the whole episode. Although the event occurred during the equinox, a clear prevalence of the Northern Hemisphere was observed. Abstract:Solar extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) irradiance is the dominant energy source for ionizing and heating the Earth's upper atmosphere. It is common to assume that the spectra of different EUV lines have the same trend to fill the solar EUV irradiance gap for modeling purposes due to inadequate EUV irradiance measurements. However, the spectra across the EUV bands may not vary in the same trend. The flare radiation energy release in the EUV (10–120 nm) is about twice as much as X-rays (0.1–10 nm) during flare interval ∼03–06 UT on 2012 October 23. By assimilating the observed nonuniform varying, time-dependent, and high-resolution solar spectrum from the Solar Dynamics Observatory mission into the modeling framework, we provide the first direct evidence of nonuniform varying solar EUV fluxes during the solar flare EUV late phase (ELP) having appreciable effects on the dayside ionosphere. The total EUV radiation energy release (5.838 × 10 28 erg) during the flare ELP is larger than that (5.698 × 10 28 erg) during the flare main phase. The ELP of an X1.8-class solar flare on 2012 October 23 can increase the dayside ionospheric density at the subsolar point by ∼5 TECU and the ionospheric density enhancements extend from the bottom to the peak of the F2 region at low latitudes with relative changes ranging from ∼20% to ∼100%. Our results highlight the importance of incorporating a realistic, high spectral and temporal resolution solar irradiance spectrum into numerical models to capture the observed time-varying ionospheric response to solar flares.

Abstract:Abstract A large outburst of flares occurred between 4–10 September 2017 when new magnetic flux emerged into and strengthened an existing active region, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Region 12673. This intense solar storm period included X9.3 (6 September) and X8.2 (10 September) flares, the largest flares that have occurred during Solar Cycle 24, as well as 39 M‐class flares and three additional X‐class flares. Another X‐class flare from this active region was observed on the farside of the Sun from Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN prior to the September events, along with other large M‐class flares, showing the potential for how farside irradiance monitoring can improve flare prediction at Earth for 1‐ to 13‐day forecasts. This September 2017 flare period is similar to other famous storm periods such as the 18 October to 5 November 2003 Halloween storm that produced 14 X‐class flares and 137 M‐class flares and the 6–10 September 2005 period that had 11 X‐class and 68 M‐class flares. All of these storm periods occurred in the declining phase of the solar cycle when solar activity had decreased significantly from solar maximum levels. This paper focuses on a number of solar irradiance observations at ultraviolet (0–190 nm) wavelengths during the September 2017 storm period and the advantages that an ensemble of measurements and models have for studying solar flares.
Spatial Development of Strong Storm-Induced Ionospheric Perturbations during 25–27 August 2018

Abstract:The 25–27 August 2018 geomagnetic storm was the third largest storm in the 24th solar cycle. It was a surprising space event that originated from low-level solar activity. This study provides an overview of the temporal–spatial behaviors of plasma irregularities as functions of geographic longitude, latitude, and altitude using ground-based (GNSS receivers and ionosonde) instruments and space-borne Swarm satellites. The results not only reveal enhanced equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) and hemispheric asymmetry over the Asian–Australian and American sectors at a particular time but also hemispheric asymmetric features of global ROT in the main and recovery phases. Additionally, this storm triggered positive plasma irregularities in altitudes of 100 to 150 km near the Auroral zone, and the changed ratio of bottom-side plasma irregularities exceeded 250%. This finding has been cross-validated by other instruments and models. Furthermore, the storm significantly affected the thermospheric O/N2 density ratio, equatorial electrojet, and vertical E×B drifts. The equatorial and mid-latitude plasma irregularities may be a combined action of thermospheric composition change, equatorial electrojet, and vertical E×B drifts. Finally, the storm induced positive Joule heating irregularities in the Auroral ionosphere in altitudes of 100 to 400 km with a maximum changed ratio of over 200%, as well as enhanced cross-Polar voltage to ~90 kv. The Polar ionospheric irregularities may be associated with additional energy input through particle precipitation, Joule heating, and ionospheric current intensification.

Abstract:This paper examines the response of the upper atmosphere to increased radiation following exceptional solar activity in September 2017. The active region of the Sun AR2673 has caused intense solar-terrestrial disturbance. This active region has generated several powerful X-class solar flares. The strongest outburst of the 24th solar activity cycle X9.3 occurred on 6 September 2017. The second powerful solar flare X8.2 occurred on 10 September 2017. Both flares caused an increase of the solar irradiance in extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray spectral regions, and Ly-α line. The empirical FISM2 model was used to obtain data on the radiation fluxes from solar flares. The HAMMONIA chemistry–climate model was used to analyze the effect of radiation on the neutral atmosphere. This work presents the results of the effect of solar flares on the chemical composition and ozone of the upper and middle atmosphere.

Abstract:It is well known that the ionospheric electron densities in the F‐region usually undergo day‐to‐day variability with the magnitude of ~20–35%, associated with the solar as well as geomagnetic activities and the meteorological forcing from the lower atmosphere. In this study, we reported remarkable enhancements in the total electron content (TEC) from the Beidou geostationary (GEO) satellites during the quiescent geophysical condition of January 2017 prior to the arrival of the sudden stratosphere warming (SSW). The daytime TEC around the equatorial ionization anomaly region increased by 75–160% and lasted for several days. The equatorial electrojet and Sq current in the ionospheric E‐region at low and middle latitudes showed the corresponding increase during the TEC enhancement interval. The possible contributions from the variations of solar EUV flux and geomagnetic activity are ruled out. Our further analysis showed that the diurnal tides in the temperature from Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry and the solar and lunar semidiurnal tides of neutral winds from two radars over China became strong during this period of interest. These results suggest that the lower atmospheric tidal forcing could contribute to the great and long‐duration TEC enhancement in the ionosphere even though the SSW had not happened yet. The abnormal ionospheric enhancements during the quiescent period were observed by the Beidou GEO TEC Daytime TEC enhancements reached a magnitude of 75–160% around the EIA region and lasted many days The meteorological forcing could produce such great ionospheric changes before the SSW arrival

Abstract:In May 2024, the scientific community observed intense solar eruptions that resulted in an extreme geomagnetic storm and auroral extension, highlighting the need to document and quantify these events. This study mainly focuses on their quantification. The source active region (AR 13664) evolved from 113 to 2761 millionths of the solar hemisphere between 4 May and 14 May 2024. AR 13664's magnetic free energy surpassed 1033 erg on 7 May 2024, triggering 12 X-class flares. Multiple interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) came out from this AR, accelerating solar energetic particles toward Earth. At least four ICMEs seemingly piled up to disturb the interplanetary space, according to the satellite data and interplanetary scintillation data. The shock arrival at 17:05 UT on 10 May 2024 significantly compressed the magnetosphere down to ~ 5.04 R_E, and triggered a deep Forbush decrease. GOES satellite data and ground-based neutron monitors confirmed a ground-level enhancement from 2 UT to 10 UT on 11 May 2024. The ICMEs induced extreme geomagnetic storms, peaking at a Dst index of -412 nT at 2 UT on 11 May 2024, marking the sixth-largest storm since 1957. The AE and AL indices showed extreme auroral extensions that located the AE/AL stations into the polar cap. We gathered auroral records at that time and reconstructed the equatorward boundary of the visual auroral oval to 29.8° invariant latitude. We compared naked-eye and camera auroral visibility, providing critical caveats on their difference. We also confirmed global enhancements of storm-enhanced density of the ionosphere.
