Abstract:The advancement of science and technology requires simple, easy-to-control, cheap, fast, and eco-friendly technologies for material synthesis, modification, and processing. Microwave technology provides an alternative due to its well-known characteristics such as selective heating, fast heating, reproducibility, flexible controls (via time, power, and frequency), high energy efficiency, and easy temperature control. In microwave-based material processing, a direct molecular interaction between electromagnetic energy and the material takes place and causes complex volumetric heating which is one of the technical challenges in material science development. This makes microwave energy one of the most important future resources for material processing. In this review, the importance and the uses of microwave technology primarily for material synthesis and modification that are abreast of recent advances will be summarized.

Abstract:Technological advancements have driven the humanity for the past five decades. In many of these technological advances, computational electromagnetics has played a major role. From the design of aeroplanes down to consumer electronics, the field of computational electromagnetics has been growing steadily in terms of maturity, complexity, as well as performance. However, innovation does not seem to slow down anytime soon. The dimension of technological devices continues to shrink down to nano scale. This also results in an ongoing research in the field of nano photonics to bring the speed of light down to the nano scale regime and integrate them with electronics. All these new advances demand a new and further development of current techniques for computational electromagnetics. In this paper, we will present some of our works that tackles the issue of computational electromagnetics as it is applied to nanoscale devices.

Abstract:The technology in modern mobile communication, wireless local area networks and global position system for mobile communication has been innovated rapidly, which asks the microwave electronic components based on microwave dielectric ceramics to have better performances. In recent years, microwave dielectric ceramic components with the characteristics of miniature, high frequency, chip level, module form and the related dielectric ceramics have been developed fast. The progresses and problems in microwave dielectric ceramics of high frequency, high dielectric constant or low-temperature sintering are reviewed. The structures and dielectric characteristics of various material systems are studied. The changing regularities of the dielectric characteristics and structures of microwave dielectric ceramics based on the ion substitutions are analyzed. The progress and production of microwave dielectric ceramic components for dielectric resonance, multilayer structure and functional module are described. Those materials and components related with low temperature co-fired technology are discussed emphatically. The relationship between microwave components structure and microwave characteristics is investigated. The future prospects of the material and its applications are provided.

Abstract:High power microwave systems have emerged as a promising new technology that has many applications, which include high power radar, directed energy weapons, laboratory sources for susceptibility and vulnerability testing of electronic systems. These systems are built, applied, and studied in many developed countries such as in United States of America and China. In the recent years, other countries such as Russia, Western Europe, Japan, Taiwan, India, South Korea, and Singapore have also entered the research spheres. In this paper an introduction to the emergence of HPM and the sequential evolution of the technology, that plays an important role in several applications, are discussed. The discussion extends to types of HPM sources, and their effects of electromagnetic interference on electronic systems.

Abstract:The work describes the microwave behavior of polymer composites containing parallel Fe-based and continuous/short-cut Co-based microwire arrays. A magnetic field-tunable metacomposite feature has been identified in the hybrid microwires composite containing 3mm spaced Co-based wires and confirmed by the presence of transmission windows in the frequency band of 1–3.5GHz. The magnetically tuned redshift-blueshift in the transmission window is due to the competing dynamic interactions between the different wires and the ferromagnetic resonance of the Fe-based microwires. When the Co-based inter-wire spacing is increased to 10mm, dual-band transmission windows in the 1.5–3.5GHz and 9–17GHz bandwidths were observed. These transmission windows are likely induced by the ferromagnetic resonance of Fe-based wires and the long range dipolar resonance arising between Fe–Co wire couples. The hybridization of parallel Fe-based and short Co-based wires in the composites leads to a significant enhancement of the transmission window in the 1–6GHz band due to the band-gap nature of the Co-based wires. The hybrid metacomposites containing microwires seem attractive in radio frequency identification application.

Abstract:As the processing of materials using clean energy becomes increasingly important, indirect conventional heating is being replaced by microwave-assisted heating. This method transforms energy directly into heat, providing rapid heating with instantaneous start-up, improved control and homogeneity of temperature distribution, and enabling a compact design. Therefore, the impact of microwaves in industry is growing in recent years. The complexity of incorporating microwaves into any industrial process resides in the need for a customised design. This is emphasised in the case of continuous flow microwave heating systems where the electromagnetic distribution and its transformation into heat, as well as the dynamics of the fluid to be heated under different operating conditions, are solved. For this purpose, and apart from the dielectric and magnetic properties of the material to be heated, which define how it behaves in relation to electric and magnetic fields when exposed to microwaves, there are several factors influencing the design of the process: the microwave generator and the transmission line, the geometry of the applicator where the electromagnetic field is distributed, the material container of the sample or the temperature measurement techniques to control the process. Additionally, numerical simulation is an essential tool for designing and predicting the suitability of any microwave system. This is the case of composite materials processing, where the application of numerical simulation tools arises from the need to achieve advanced materials more efficiently. In this paper, these fundamental aspects for the design of a microwave-assisted heating system are reviewed, presenting examples of various applications where this microwave technology is integrated.

In context to electro-magnetic circuit design, a brief overview of the AI/ML tools is presented. The current applications are briefly touched upon, and the future research directions are outlined. The authors hope that this paper will encourage early-stage researchers to consider choosing AI/ML techniques to efficiently resolve compound engineering problems involving electromagnetic field analysis. Abstract:The densification and sintering of ceramics using microwaves was first reported in the mid‐1960s. Today, the reduced carbon footprint of this process has renewed interest as it uses less energy overall compared to conventional process heating/furnaces. However, scaling‐up and commercializing the microwave sintering process of ceramics remains a formidable challenge. As a contactless method, microwave sintering offers geometric flexibility over other field‐assisted sintering processes. Yet, the inability to address multi‐scale, multi‐physics‐driven heterogeneities arising during microwave coupling limits discussions about a future scale‐up process. We make the case here that unlike 60 years ago, new advances in multiscale computational modeling, materials characterization, control systems and software open up new avenues for addressing these challenges. More importantly, the rise of additive manufacturing techniques demands the innovation of sintering processes in the ceramics community for realizing near‐net‐shaped and complex parts for applications ranging from medical implants to automotive and aerospace parts. Abstract:Discovery of the capacity of microwave energy to heat materials was a major milestone in the history of technology and scientific research. This discovery led to the development of many devices and processes that have replaced conventional heating methods, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels and reducing atmospheric CO 2 emissions. Over the past two decades the use of microwave heating for processing of non-dielectric metals, metal powders alloys have increased markedly and includes sintering, melting, joining, cladding, drilling, and 3D printing. These developments have used a wide range of experimental procedures, and the use of microwave power has resulted in significant benefits over conventional heating methods. These benefits include a many-fold decreases in processing times and energy consumption, as well as improved microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of the processed material. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art of microwave processing of metals, metal powders and their alloys and focuses on important process parameters such as heating mechanisms, electromagnetic properties of metals, the factors affecting these parameters and applications to metal processing. Requirements for efficient metal processing using microwave power are presented including metal properties, microwave susceptors, insulators, ceramic containment structures and temperature measurement methods that all play roles in the development of microwave processing of metals and metal alloy materials. Current challenges and issues in equipment design parameters and various processing methods to facilitate commercial implementation of metal processing at larger scales are investigated.
